In fact, did we not see a similar incident on Stage 1 and Stage 9? Yes
Should Cavendish be relegated from the sprint? Yes, as should a lot of other people across the season
Are people overreacting? Fuck Yes
The only thing that makes this look worse is because Veelers is pretty tall and Cav is short. Usually the contact is between the two riders shoulders, but Cav moves Veelers arm which makes him swerve and basically do a side-flip falling towards Cav instead of just being knocked over, or best case scenario stays up.
My opinion though, it was still a stupid move, and should have been relegated to the back of the field.

Look at the front view, Cavendish did check Veelers on purpose, but I think he just wanted him to move a little bit to the other side and not make him crash... |

Veelers asked Cav to crash him so he could lose more time to win the lanterne rouge

Yeah and Cav just went like okay but then he decided to crash him after the 3 km mark, because he is a dick and like that Veelers still crashed but didn't loose time...

No he's not, he just has that aero sprinting position where he's always hunched, and the stubby legs that make him look short.
McEwen and Freire were short. Cavendish is quite average height, same as Contador, taller than Evans, etc.

Actually, most of his sprinting success are more due to his particularly excellent position on the bike (very low and aerodynamic) than to his sheer power, that I reckon is slightly inferior to guys like Greipel, Renshaw (yes, Mark Renshaw), Bos, etc. |

Lets just say I meant in relation to each other
You're definitely right though. From the TV, Cav looks short and stocky compared to Conta who looks very thin and slightly above average height.

I read "Conta" as "Costa" at first and I just kept thinking "....because he is?"
And yeah, looks deceive. Valverde is basically the same height as Contador. Looks quite a bit taller.

All valid points indeed
I would like to have seen Cav's reaction had it been the other way around though, he would certainly have kicked up a stink over it |

I just watched the sprint, it was much less bad than I thought from the forum.
My opinion, for what it's worth, is that Cav was at fault, but it probably wasn't bad enough to relegate him.

My first reaction was: not intentionally, but a dumb move by Cavendish. Is a race-incident, what can happen in a sprint, when the guy next to you slows down and moves to your side, and you yourself want to move to the other side.
Think Cav and Veelers should give each other a hug, and then forget about it.
But why hasn't anybody mentioned the road of the final 300m? Why put a slight corner in it, and have some kind of cobbles at the finish??? That's dangerous, the streets of St. Malo should have been DQed!

I just saw the sprint for the first time. I really don't think that Cav did that maliciously and he seemed to mostly be defending his own line, which Veelers had swerved into a bit.
Cavendish is a dickhead for taking that guy's dictaphone. That's just childish and confirms what everyone already knew - Cavendish has the temper of an unruly four year old.
