Isn't that Fiesole climb slightly too long for Gilbert?
Hmm, 300m... Could be...

Could be a very interesting stage tomorrow and surely a sea of orange trying to get off the front after the last few days of disappointment for Euskaltel? Tailor made finish for Sanchez today but just not the legs to make the selection.
Looks like Quintana was fresh off the phone to Valverde to slip away at the optimum time today, nice work by him, though you'd imagine the finish was well known to all after last years Vuelta. |

He wouldn't be top favourite, but it should be possible to double his title. |

Doesnt look like 300m on that profile. More like 3 k's...
edit: apparently it's approx. 5 kilometres long.

5 km long ? At pro's speed I'd say it'll take between 12 and 15 minutes to climb. Not a MAS effort then, but a threshold one.
Gilbert as most classics rider has an excellent MAS (maximal aerobic speed), whereas GC riders or (mountain) climbers are usually better when it comes to threshold business.
If the pace is sustained enough, I can't see any classic guy, or Gilbert whatever his form, win this one. Now with the cowardish riding style we get to witness on every opportunity, it can't be told whether any team will bother making the race hard.
GC guys with a good punch and able to cope with long distances ? Make your call(s)... |

Moreno. Valverde. Cunego.
Moreno is by far the better sprinter of those three (the other two are closely matched), but reputation counts so Valverde will get the nod as leader

Cunego? Well, if Gilbert won it last year without doing nothing, compared to 2011, then Cunego, can win. |

Spain will have the usual problem of too many leaders. I fancy someone like Voeckler or Dan Martin for the worlds. Sorry for being off topic. |

I was just listing the best sprinters between the 40 or so best climbers in the world

Sorry to everybody that I started the offtopic.
I just wanted to talk about colombians and make the joke with the worlds...
.. but we can start now a dedicated post for it (just 6 months to the date) since everybody's got an opinion

isso, do you really consider Valverde a worse sprinter than Moreno and on pair with Cunego?
I'm only asking because I've always thought of Valverde as perhaps the fastest finisher of all GC contenders / puncheurs. Simply because he seems capable of competing with actual sprinters in a mass sprint (especially if the finish is slightly uphill), whereas I find for example Purito similar in terms of acceleration, but not as much of an actual sprinter.

That is my opinion, yes.
This isn't 2006 anymore
Of course if you ask Gutiérrez, he says the only rider faster than Valverde is Cavendish and only barely
It's not really a case of thinking Valverde is worse. More that Moreno is better.

Moreno is a good sprinter. Valverde is probably at his level, Cunego is probably doesn't even know to sprint probably and if the finish is flat, we'll see. Tough, Sagan, might have a word to say, so does EBH. |
