@PCM rulezz: Indeed. Hard to beat these. But top10 looks pretty much secured now.
@Alakagom: Thanks. Would have prefered to keep Boswell but he decided different. But I am pretty sure that I will have good additions. In especially if I reach the PCT division. Otherwise I should still have a decent team with chances to try it again next season although I might miss the big leaders such as Dombrowski, Parker and Craddock and it will obviously be a bit harder I guess.

Vuelta a Colombia


Stage 9: Bogota - Libano (229,6km)

Another really hard stage today. The last climb doesn`t look too hard but actually it`s one of the hardest in the whole race as it`s quite a long one seeing that the stage has almost classic length.
So you can really gain or lose time on this climb.
Joe will try to hang on and repeat his performance from the last mountain stages. For me it`s just to survive within the time limit. I will try to enter the breakaway and gain a small advantage on the peloton as it might help me in the end. Maybe we will even stand a chacne as well.

8 riders were allowed to create a gap during the long descent. Good news. I was able to join them and will get some time to present myself.

Going up the Cat.2 mountain team EPM is doing the pace for race leader Baez. They totally surround him today and are surely one of the strongest teams this Vuelta.
The gap to my group has not even reached 5min and it`s not looking too good for us actually.

68km left and the gap is still at 6min. EPM obviously slowed down a bit as they might save their energy for the last climb.

Still 30km to go and we already go uphill. We have reached the final climb and except for a very short descent we will climb now. The gap is down to 3'10 and EPM is back to the higher pace again.

It just took them 6km until they caught us. A group of 35 including Dombrowski and Parker is coming from behind while I have reached my limit.

18km left and the group is down to 20. Dombrowski and also Parker are still there but due to the very high pace both of them start to struggle.

With 14,5km to go the groups splits into a few pieces. 10 riders in the first group including all top10 riders except for Dombrowski, Cardenas and Munoz Giraldo. Therefore EPM still has two helpers there as also Gobernacion with another helper. What a performance.
In the 2nd group the remaining 3 top10 riders plus 4 more climbers while Parker felt back to the 3rd group.

With 5km left Dombrowski followed Daan Olivier, who just had attacked. He surely will lose a lot of time on the top7 but gaining time on Cardenas and Munoz Giraldo could let him climb in the GC nevertheless.
Also Angel Nino and Fothen lost contract to the first group now. For the first time even the German can`t follow the South Americans.

Baez really seems to be the strongest here. He wins in the sprint of the small group ahead of Buenahora and Alarcon.

Dombrowski loses 4'21 today and probably also the last chance for a top5. Still he gained almost a minute on Cardenas and Munoz Giraldo. So he still stays on the 10th but the gap to the 8th became smaller.

I reached also my 2nd goal and was in the breakaway for a 2nd time. I was feeling great but couldn`t perform any better today. I am not a climber and the Colombians in especially the EPM team did a great job and let all others suffer a lot today.

Thanks both. Indeed the Colombians are too strong here. Not only the top10. There might be 20 Colombians in the top30. Wink
And agree, Ryan having not the worst race here, even without big results.
@Sutty: Actually it was also a good day for Dombrowski. He lost more time on the best but gained on 2 riders that are ahead of him.

The HC mountain will be a hard task today but due to the long descent afterwards it will be hard to create any notable gap here. So a good day for the GC riders to recover a bit.
For the rest of us it`s still a day of pain riding up the climb. After yesterdays efforts I might have another calm day falling back early and reaching the finish with some minutes back.

A group of 7 forms the break of the day. None of our riders in there. I was too tired, Craddock and Stuyven didn`t have the legs today and Avis` attempts failed.

Just like yesterday the whole EPM team surrounds Baez and is controlling the pace.
We slowly reach the climb and although a group of ~50 is already falling off the peloton all 6 of us are still here.

10km later we really hit the hard terrain. Not as steep as other mountains but very long. Joe, Dale and Charlie stay in the front of the group while the rest of us is slowly going backwards.

Only 2km later I fall out of the pack as 3rd rider of our team. Only 66 riders in the favourites group now.

Half up the climb Victor Niño Corredor attacks. The Colombian is 16th in the overall but 31min behind Baez and already 20min behind Joe. So not that much of a danger. After the 10th the gaps really become big.

With Beltran Suarez, Colorado Hernandez, Piamonte and Infantino are the EPM riders doing the pace. All 4 of them are similar skilled riders than Dombrowski, what`s already showing their strength.

Only 1'36 behind the leading riders the peloton goes over the top. Nino now have reached the group that is down to 4.

The pace wasn`t that high in the peloton going dpwnhill. So the group wins todays stage. It was a fight between two Spaniards. Prades wins ahead of Salgueiro. Russian Rybakov comes in third ahead of the Colombian Nino, who might have suffered after his solo chase.

Baez himself is leading the peloton over the line. A bit more than 2min later including Dombrowski and Parker, who had quite a calm day.

I finished 18min later in my already known 1st gruppetto a bit ahead of Stuyven and Craddock. So it was a very calm day for me and for the whole team.
Now 2 not that hard stages again before we enter the hardest stages I think. Not looking that much forward to these two mountain stages.

Thanks Sutty. Not the terrain for Ryan. There will be better opportunities than Colombia I guess.

Vuelta a Colombia


Stage 11 - La Tebeida - Cali (171,3km)

One of the very few stages here in Colombia without any climbs. So surely a sprinter stage, where Stuyven wants to show his qualities once again.
For the rest of us it`s a good day to recover.

Avis was sent into todays breakaway. Stuyven surely can compete in sprints as shown before but he is no winning sprinter, so we had to try something different as well.
So it was my task today to take care for the others in the peloton. From time to time I went back and got some water bottles.

With a bit more than 10km left the group was caught. The sprinter teams don`t get many more chances. Maximum tomorrow but in general this could already be the last chance.

Once again Mike Friedman proves to be the fastest here. The American is getting his 3rd stage win in Colombia.
Stuyven really had no legs today and only finished 28th today. Not the best day for us.

Stage 12 - Yumbo - Pereira (203,1km)

Todays stage is totally flat until we reach the last 20km. Then it start going uphill although it`s not very steep today and with lots of flat parts in between. So many experts think some sprinters could make it to the finish within the first group.

Nothing happened until the climb. A group of 7 without any Bontrager rider formed the break of the day but with the climb starting they are almost caught and indeed the sprinter teams did the most next to EPM.

Lots of attacks by top 5-15 riders during the steeper sections. We actually also planned a Dombrowski attack but the terrain was just not hard enough and so we decided to send Avis to the front bringing all back together.
This of course let some sprinters struggle and for me, Stuyven and Craddock the day was over. We decided to not go to our limit and stayed in the end of the peloton.

But again it was obviously a sprinter stage. At least Friedman picked up yet another win. Quite a pity as we might have gone for Stuyven more serious today. On the other hand he was the only real sprinter there and he just might have had a great day.

I had two very calm days and with two hard mountain stages and a ITT left I can`t really play out my strengths. Depending on my legs I might try something again on the remaining stages but this is not decided yet.

@sutty: He would really suit indeed. But he has a contract for the next season and he is already 29 years, which wouldn`t be that much of a problem in case I reach the PCT. When staying CT I would like to keep my team younger. So he definitely won`t be at my team for next year. Wink
@Ian: He is just 70flat and 70sprint. So not a sprinter at all. Also his potential is more on the hills, so he neer will be. Wink But this might be more realistic seeing him in top10 of the GP Wallonie a few days ago in real.

Vuelta a Colombia


Stage 13 - Pereira - Manizales (117,5km)

The first of the two remaining mountain stages looks really hard. On the other hand the final climb is not as hard as it looks like. Not the longest and also not the steepest. Plus there is a mostly flat part in the end. Still we expect some gaps here and Dombrowski wants to improve a bit.

Actually our plan was to send Stuyven into the break. But all his attempts failed. Pretty spontaneously I decided to give it a try as my legs did feel fine this morning. And luckily I was able to enter the breakaway. At the moment only 8 riders, but 4 more will join. Most of them unfortunately better climbers than me.

Mountain time again. That means Team EPM is doing all the work alone for race leader Baez, who wants his 2nd overall win in Colombia.
With 46km to go the gap is still at almost 7min. But the hardest part is still to come.

There we go. Last 20km are reached and we start the climb with 6,7%. We share the work pretty well and so the gap is at 8min now. This is looking pretty good but experience has shown that the Colombians attack early and so they can surely gain this time on this climb.

As said, Baez, Buenahora, Cardenas and Munoz Giraldo with an early attempt. Not the best group for us as Joe still wants to overtake last two, who are directly ahead of him and obviously recovered quite well.

In the group I can`t follow the best. On the other hand I am in the first half of the breakaway and some better climbers are already a bit behind.
With 7km left the gap is already down to 3min.

Only Olivier was able to create a gap and will surely win this. I am still in for the fight for teh 2nd place today. We are in a group of 7, so a top8 seems logical for me. 3 more rider follow 37s later and have suffered a lot on the climb.

Great result for Daan Olivier. The Dutch really having a great race here already winning the 2nd mountain stage out of a breakaway.

Sure...The 3 suffering riders with +37 on me gain that time in the sprint, where I had nothing more to add and overtake me just ahead of the finish line. So not even a top10 for me. Still the 11th is a good result but a bit disappointing seeing I had that gap and fought hard to stay with the first group.

The peloton just finished behind including Joe and Dale and all the others. No favourite was able to gain time today.
So a mediocre day for us. Not the best but surely not the worst.

Thanks Sutty. Was still a great fight by him although I hate this no energy, then you sprint very slow. It was the same in the peloton with Dombrowski and Parker. Sometimes it`s not worth to attack as you then have such a huge disadvantage in a sprint and you get beaten by far weaker riders, who should have suffered more than you due to one attack.

Stage 14 - Manizales - Medellin Las Palmas (206,1km)

It took until the 2nd last day until the queen`s stage. The first half is not really hard with a wide road down to the valley before we climb a HC mountain. And not enough. Afterwards we again go up to the finish. Two very steep mountains, where we expect the biggest gaps.
I have no more ambitions in the time trial tomorrow so I will give everything to support Joe, who still wants to climb a bit in the GC.

A big group of 13 riders form the group of the day. One of them is Gónzalez Barrera, 2nd in the KoM ranking. Surely he wants to get the jersey back from Olivier, who got it yesterday. These two really fight for it since the first days here.

Baez was superstrong this race and no one really doubts that he will get his 2nd trophy here. On the other hand the gap to Buenahora is not that big and todays stage can change everything.

Two times stage winner Daan Olivier sees the danger for the KoM jersey and attacks just a few kilometers before the HC climb starts. Good for him to have some support in Salgueiro.

We want to avoid the fast and changing pace by the Colombians. So it`S me and Stuyven who control the peloton now. Craddock has some kind of wild card today as he wants to save his energy for tomorrow.

Reaching the half of the climb it`s still me doing the pace, while Stuyven suffers a bit more. Good to see that I have still good legs after two weeks. A lot of riders already lost contact including Craddock in the next group.

Also Stuyven is at the end of the group now. I still have some energy left and get pushed by all the Americans on the road side. It`s really a great atmosphere here.

I led the peloton over the HC climb but then I was totally exhausted. I still kept contact until the final climb, where I placed Joe directly behind race leader Baez.
Two riders obviously want to attack right at the start of the climb.
Osorio and also Munoz Giraldo, who seems to feel better again.

My working day is over. Together with Avis and two others I will ride the rest of the climb a bit calmer than the guys ahead.

Baez and Alarcon attack. These two might have been the strongest in the mountains. They just catch Olivier and Salgueiro, who have been the last remaining breakaway riders. The Dutch got enough points and will defend the jersey.
Joe is directly behind them leading the group bringing more riders into trouble. Cardenas already lost contact, which are great news for us. Munoz Giraldo on the other hand is still fighting.

Joe really holds on and finishes on the podium today. Great result. Behind the riders came a bit closer but there are surely gaps in between today.

I lost more than 16min in the end. Still I am very happy. I will stay in the top50 and did a lot of work today for Joe, which obviously paid off in the end.
Tomorrow will be a time trial where I don`t expect anything from me. In general this was a great experience here in Colombia.

Indeed. It was a good team performance and in the end a great result for us. Not the stage win but this wasn`t expected.

Vuelta a Colombia


Stage 15 - Medellin ITT (34,8km)

We end this race just like we started it: With an individual time trial. Most of us can relax today but two of us still have big aims. Joe wants the 8th spot. He is just 16s behind Munoz Giraldo, who should be the weaker time trialist. So he really goes into this race motivated today.
Also Craddock is focussing this stage the most. He has a good chance here to celebrate his first season win. There are some similar time trialists in this race but nobody who is the clear favourite. An important factor is of course how good the riders regenerated after all the mountains.
Also the fight for the podium is not decided yet. In especially Alarcon and Cano Ardila are within 8s. Last one could make it a complete Colombian podium today.

Craddock had the small disadvantage that he has to ride pretty early. As first Bontrager rider he enters the course. Only real favourite so far was the American Tom Zirbel, who obviously has the best time at the intermediate and in the finish.
At the intermediate he comes in as 1st beating Zirbel`s time by 30s. Great start.

A bit later I ride from the ramp. I have really bad legs today. Obviously I suffer a lot after the efforts on the last two stages. I won`t complain as I can`t be very disappointed with this race.

Craddock just reached the finish. He lost a bit on Zirbel but keeps the lead. 11s difference in the end. Will this be enough for the stage win?

I come in totally exhausted. Provisional 71st and surely will go higher than 100th I think.

Gutierrez Cataluna is the next favourite on the road. He disappointed a bit in the mountains but still he is a strong time trialist and should have recovered a bit better than others.
2nd at the intermediate 13s behind. So still advantage for Craddock.

Now we start with the top10. 3 close decisions actually. For us the most important if Joe can overtake Munoz Giraldo?

He leaves the ramp 2min later and this isn`t looking good. He moves quite a lot on the bike and already after 5km Joe has the 16s on him. If he continues like this, it wasn`t as exciting as we thought.

Markus Fothen was the biggest surprise in Colombia. He rode a lot above his level and though he is not undeserved on the 6th at the moment. And although Angel Nino is just a few seconds behind it`s questionable that he will lose this position as he is one of todays stage favourites.

Gutierrez Cataluna didn`t slowed down until after the line. And just like with Zirbel Craddock lost some time on the 2nd half. So the Spaniard takes the lead by 28s. No chance to win this today for us but the podium spot looking good now as only Fothen came dangerously close at the intermediate, where Craddock at least was the winner today.

Joe with one of his best time trials. 9th at the moment. But he might lose some more spots with 8 more coming. He was even 9s faster than Cardenas so the 9th is already sure.

After an horrible ride Munoz Giraldo finishes as 114th. This is clearly enough for Joe, who will finish the race as 8th. That`s a great result for us and might be an important step to reach PCT level next season.

Also Fothen overtakes Craddock, which means a 3rd place for us today, which is still a good result. The German is just 4s faster and this means Gutierrez Cataluna wins todays stage.
Both of them have recovered better although they rode on a higher level during the stages. This could have been expected as they are decent climbers.

I finish as 108th today but keep my top50 as 49th in the GC. With 3 appearances in the breakaway I reached my goal. So in general a successful race for me and the team although I might have missed the chance to reach the top10 once.
Joe as 8th and Dale on a good 18th performed great and might do even better in the next races, where they are peaking again.
