Giro d'Italia: stage 20
Verbania - Sestriere 242.2 km

The last weekend of the Giro. Another tough stage with probably the toughest mountain of the whole Giro. The colle delle Finestre is 19 km long at an average gradient of 8.5%. To make it harder, the last 9 km are gravel roads. After a small descent, the riders will climb again towards Sestriere. The combination of these climbs made up for a spectacular ending 6 years ago, let's hope we see the same today and that it ends good for Menchov.

It took almost 100 km to form a break of the day. Finally, 9 riders could get away. Most notable are Cummings, Sioutsou, De Clerq and Ulissi. They will start the Finestre with an advantage of 6' to the peloton. They don't stand a chance.

Sastre and Menchov were both feeling very strong so the first immediately made a hard pace when the pack started the Finestre. A small favourites group got formed almost immediately on the narrow roads. Evans, Anton, Kruiswijk, Scarponi are with the two Geox-riders. Race leader Basso is again missing. He tries to come back together with Rujano.

The group kept a high pace and passed the escapees right before the start of the 'sterrato'. Menchov, Anton, Evans, Scarponi and Kruiswijk are still in front. Basso and Rujano are a bit behind trying to pass the escapees.

Menchov kept a steady pace at the front but Rujano and Basso came closer. When they almost connected with the group, Menchov upped the pace a bit and nobody wanted to follow him. He was alone in front at the top of the Finestre. Basso reached the others and that group is 20" behind at the top.

Menchov made a good pace in the descent and at the start of the last climb, his advantage had grown to 1'30". Nobody wanted to chase the Russian in the back. Is this the Russian's glory day? He is very tired but keeps pushing himself.

When with 5 km to go, Menchov's gap was still over a minute, Basso upped the pace in the back and it looked like Anton and Evans couldn't follow. They would make a counter attack a little later though but only the Aussie would reach Basso. That duo started to dwindle down Menchov's advantage as the Russian was really suffering.

The Italian and Australian could keep up their good pace and have almost connected to the Russian under the 1 km banner. Menchov gives everyting to stay away but they come closer.

And they pass him with 500 metres to go. It's a close sprint between Evans and Basso for the stage win. Menchov can't even follow the two anymore.

The Pink Jersey Ivan Basso could just edge out Evans for the stage win. The two were clearly the strongest riders this Giro sharing almost all the stage wins in mountain top finishes.

Menchov could pass the finish line a quarter of a minute later. A very good stage by the Russian as he rode very strong but timed his escape just not perfect. Menchov's opponent Anton crosses the line 45" after the finish meaning Menchov took back 45" seconds today. He is now 1' behind the Spaniard with 30 km of TT coming up, he has a good chance for the podium.

Very good job by Menchov. He attacked and could take back time on Anton. Still a minute to go in tomorrows time trial

+ 1. Looking good for Menchov, his shape seems to be better than Anton's now.

Thanks Cuxu and tsmoha. We peaked to the last week with Menchov and Anton was already good in Catalunya and Basque so it's normal that Menchov's form is better now.
Giro d'Italia: stage 21
Milano - Milano 33.2 km

The riders are on flat ground again. That doesn't mean the sprinters get a chance as the Giro ends with a 33 km long time trial around Milano. The goal is simple: Menchov takes back 1'09" on Anton and finishes on the podium

The first favourite to start is Bert Grabsch. The German ex World champion TT from 2008 sets the best time but it was not convincing. His 47'13" are only 12" faster than Tyler Farrar.

Next favourite to start is Swedish champion Gustav Larsson. He crushes Grabsch time with 56" seconds. 46'17"

David Zabriskie is another good time trialist at the start. He always is a couple of seconds faster as Larsson at the intermediate checks and so he is at the finish. 46'06".

Irish Nicolas Roche rode a decent Giro. He could have overtaken Rujano but comes 3" to short. He finishes 10th in the overal, a good result for him.

Denis Menchov is then at the start. He needs to take back 1'09" to Anton to finish on the podium. He doesn't feel great to start, the stress maybe?

Venezoluan climber Jose Rujano lost a lot of time in the first week but came back strong in the mountains. He could just hold off Roche to finish 9th overal. A good result for his Androni team.

Italian TT champion Marco Pinotti can providing that he rides a good TT, overtake Rodriguez in the GC. He clearly does the first thing as his 45'50" are better as Zabriskie. The best time so far. He also overtakes Rodriguez and finishes 7th in the overal.

Michele Scarponi was before the Giro, seen as one of the top favourites. He never proved that but his steady performances, except for one bad day to Sondrio, made him finish 6th in the overal after overtaking Rodriguez in the TT.

Jaoquin Rodriguez is famous for his bad TT's and loses again a lot of time today. His bad TT sees him falling down from 6th to 8th in the GC after controlling the Giro the first week and a half.

Steven Kruiswijk rode a very good Giro. Not seen as a favourite before the start, the young Dutch always was the last to follow the real top favourites and finish on a well deserved 5th place. He also wins the U25 classification.

The first time check was not good news for Menchov and Geox. Menchov isn't feeling well and his time is only 8" faster as the Spaniard. Let's hope he recovers a bit.

Cadel Evans could capp off a good Giro with another stage win today. He rode a good TT and could just beat Pinotti with 1" to take his 3rd stage win. He finishes 2nd overal. Good but again no GT-win.

The second time check didn't mean anything better for Menchov. He has only taken 10" to Anton in the first part of the TT. He will now upp his pace but he still needs 59" to the Spaniard.

Menchov gave everything and could ride faster in the last part. He takes time back on the others on the last part and his time is 46'44". Not a good time for his standards. This means Anton has to ride slower as 47'55" to take 3rd.

Anton got passed by Evans in the last km but what is his team? 48'00". YES! Menchov finishes on the podium of the Giro. Only 10" between him and Anton after such a hard Giro. Very good for Menchov!!

Ivan Basso's race lead never came in danger during the final TT. He rode a good TT with a time of 46'42" as 5th today. Basso was clearly the strongest this Giro.

Positives
Ivan Basso:
The Italian used the same tactique which was succesfull by Armstrong. Strike on the first real mountain, the Etna this year, and immediately showing your the strongest. He did that again on the Grossglockner and since then, his lead never was only in danger on the passo di Ganda where he probably had some problems with the cold and rainy weather. Next to the pink jersey, he also took home the red jersey for the best sprinter and the green jersey for the best climber. This all makes him the deserved winner of the Giro 2011.
Steven Kruiswijk
The Dutch rider is only 23 years old but proved this Giro that he is very talented. After attacking a lot and finishing 18th last year, he came to the Giro hoping for a top 10. He did better as that as he was always the last rider to follow the best climbers on the hard climbs this Giro. The 5th place and the young riders jersey is probably more as he would have dreamed of before the Giro.
Androni Giocattolli
The Italian team brought a strong team to Turin for the start of the Giro. Rujano had hopes for a top 5 and maybe even better and Sella was here to take revenge after 2008. After a bad first weak were Rujano lost a lot of time on his opponents, the team fought back in the mountains. Especially the Zoncolan stage was very good by this team. Of the 10 men who survived the Crostis, Rujano, Sella and Serpa all are Androni riders. Sella finished as 5th and Rujano as 6th. They took more as 20' on Geox in the team ranking and won the overal with almost an half hour advantage.
Andrea Noe and Santo Anza
This two ex-teammates get mentioned here because their attacking style got rewarded with stage wins. Anza was able to hold off the peloton in the first stage and Noe could just stay away from a favourites group in San Pellegrino Terme. Both after a breakaway, they proved that attacking from far out can lead to succes.
Negatives
Liquigas
Ivan Basso won the Giro but thanking his teammates won't take long. Only loyal helper Smyd and Paterski finished the Giro. It started with the TTT were Basso lost a lot of time on his opponents. The two queen-stages to the Zoncolan and Val di Fassa saw 6 of his helpers abandon the race. The last week was for a good part controlled by only Smyd who did a great job.
Carlos Sastre
It feels bad to say this but Carlos really disappointed me this Giro. He started with the toughts of helping Menchov and maybe finishing in the top 10 himself. But after some mountain stages it became clear that he could do neither. He wasn't any more help to Menchov as Wyss or Duarte on the first mountains. His hopes for the GC were then already long gone as he was sitting around the 20th place. His stage win made up for a lot and after that he started riding better but what he brought was not enough. His days as top GT rider are clearly over.
The Sprinters
4! Only four stages ended in mass sprints. Two for Farrar, one for Petacchi and one for Rojas. This Giro must have been a hell for the sprinters. Seeing breakaways survive on the first flat stages and then entering the , for sprinters very hard, mountains. The best sprinter in the points competition, normally won by a sprinter, was Farrar in the 7th position, 104 points behind the winner Basso.
Michele Scarponi
Seen as one of the top favourites for the start of the Giro, Scarponi was always running behind. He could never compete for a top 5 and never had a chance for a stage win. He still finished in a decent 6th position but better was expected after his 4th place last year.

Congrats for bringing Menchov to the podium! You got the reward for the attacking in stage 20. Too bad you missed the stage win, but the Top 3 will make it up for you. Congrats!!

Thanks to all! I was indeed very happy with Menchov's good Giro!
| 1/05 | | Rund um den Finanzplatz Eschborn - Frankfurt | Davide Rebellin | | 04/05 - 08/05 | | 5 Jours de Dunkerque | Jimmy Casper | | 07/05 - 29/05 | | Giro d'Italia | Ivan Basso | | 13/05 - 15/05 | | Tour de Picardie | Denis Flahaut | | 14/05 | | Scandinavian Race in uppsala | Angelo Furlan | | 15/05 - 22/05 | | Amgen Tour of California | Fränk Schleck | | 18/05 - 22/05 | | Circuit de Lorraine | Nicki Sörensen | | 22/05 | | ProRace Berlin | John Degenkolb | | 25/05 - 29/05 | | Bayern - Rundfahrt | Alberto Contador | | 25/05 - 29/05 | | Ronde van Belgie | Philippe Gilbert |
There were not much races in May as the month was dominated by the first GT of the season. The Giro was won by Ivan Basso. There were also 5 'Hors Categorie' races this month. The Tour's of California, Bayern and Belgie all had strong startlist and the winners were some of cycling's biggest stars:Schleck, Contador and Gilbert. Other notable victories for Rebellin in the always hard faught race around Frankfurt and for Casper in the 5 jours de Dunkerque, a very prestigious race to win for a French rider.

Ivan Basso made a large jump in the CQ-ranking after his victory in the Giro. The other riders who made a big jump are Evans, Anton and Menchov. The 3 riders who were behind Basso in the Giro. Geox has two riders in the top 20. Menchov is 19th and Cobo 20th.

Garmin - Cervelo is the best team so far. That due to steady performances by their top riders (Hushovd, Farrar, Hesjedal). Geox is the first CT Team at the 8th place. Most surprising to see is probably the 18th place from HTC - Highroad who are the 2nd worst WT-Team after AG2R.
| 01/06 - 05/06 | | Skoda - Tour de Luxembourg | | 05/06 - 12/06 | | Critérium du Dauphiné | | 05/06 | | Tour de Rijke | | 06/06 | | GP du canton d'Argovie | | 10/06 - 12/06 | | Delta Tour Zeeland | | 11/06 - 19/06 | | Tour de Suisse | | 15/06 - 19/06 | | Ster ZLM Tour | | 16/06 - 19/06 | | Tour de Slovénie | | 16/06 - 19/06 | | Route du Sud | | 24/06 | | National Championships ITT | | 26/06 | | National Championships RR |
An easy schedule for our team. Most teams are preparing for the Tour, where we will not ride, in the Dauphine and the Tour de Suisse. We will only compete in the Tour de Slovenie and the National championships at the end of the month.
