Thanks.
The Clasica San Sebastian is a hard one day classic held one week after the Tour de France. Often the decision falls on the second last hill about 30km to the line. The first winner in 1981 was Marino Lejarreta, who also won in 1982 and 1987. So he is also the record champion.
Result in 2011 (page 36)
1 | Philippe Gilbert | Liquigas - Cannondale | 2 | Fränk Schleck | Team Leopard Trek | 3 | Ryder Hesjedal | Garmin - Cervelo | 4 | Francesco Ginanni | Lampre-ISD | 5 | Yaroslav Popovych | Team RadioShack | 6 | Romain Sicard | Team Europcar | 7 | Levi Leipheimer | Team RadioShack | 8 | Tadej Valjavec | Ag2r La Mondiale | 9 | Joaquím Rodríguez Oliver | Team Katusha | 10 | Jelle Vanendert | Omega Pharma-Lotto |
After being 10th in 2010 Hesjedal improved and was on the podium last year. Together with Frank Schleck he tried to attack on the final kilometers and follow Gilbert, who initiated this acceleration. The Belgium won the classic solo in the end, while Schleck and Hesjedal just saved their little advance into the finish.
As he aims for the Vuelta this year he won`t be able to improve this year.
Garmin squad in 2012
We have quite a strong squad here. LL Sanchez will be our main leader as his form is still quite good after the Tour. He is a quite similar rider to Hesjedal and will give his best.
Also Vansummeren and Lowe are here after finishing the Tour. Vansummeren will be our co leader together will Martin, who just won the Tour of Austria and is aiming for the Tour of Pologne now, where he wants to win after two 2nd places in a row.
Michel Kreder could be our joker as he improved this season into a further option in those races.
Farrar, Dao and Fischer are supporting them as good as possible and are more focussed on the next races such as Pologne or Denmark Tour.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Norway in the same time zone as Germany ?
Anyway, go Dirk
Might be In my mind i was thinking that since GB is 1 hour behind Norway, then Germany must at least be the same.

Thanks for the responses.
The weather was just too good in the previous days. So I wasn`t playing a lot and preferred sitting in the park having a barbecue.
But here the next report.
Classica San Sebastian
Donostia - Donostia
It`s the same route than in the last year. Biggest difficulty is the long climb and steep climb onto the Jaizkibel, which has to be climbed twice. Last year a group of ~70 riders were able to stay in the peloton and so there was a small mass sprint between the puncheurs.
4 riders in the break of the day. None of them is a really good puncheur. So it will be very hard to stay ahead of the peloton in the next 220km.
Russ (NetApp), Mestre (Saxobank), Marycz (Leopard) and Nepomnyachshiy (Astana) are looking for their chance.
Esepcially Liquigas for top favourite Peter Sagan or last year`s winner Gilbert are doing the pace. But also Lampre for Cunego and Ginanni, Quickstep for Devolder and Scarponi and Rabobank for Martens and Rogers are doing the pace. So the gap is never higher than 4min.
Time for the first climb. The pace is still quite slow, so no real problems for the riders.
Still 130 riders in the peloton afterwards. Just Dao lost contact for our team.
The young Dane will be our sprinter for the following Tour of Denmark, where he will have big opponents such as Boasson Hagen, Leezers or Brown.
Jumping on the second climb the pace is already much higher. Russ and Mestre are caught soon and many riders have big problems now.
On the descent also the last two riders are back in the peloton. Still 90 riders in there with just 2 shorter climbs left.
26km to the finish Devolder with the first attack. He seems to feel strong today.
Several riders with more attacks, especially Van Den Broeck and Kolobnev were quite active on the last kilometers.
On the very last and very short climb Vansummeren with an attack. This was the point where Gilbert, Frank Schleck and Hesjedal created a gap to the peloton last year.
With Sanchez preparing for a possible sprint Vansummeren was our men for this attack.
Immediately he created a gap of 14s but other riders as Contador were following him and closed the gap.
With 4km to go Contador accelerated again and Sanchez was following him. Together they started the sprint with a very small gap.
But in the end nobody had a chance against the sprinting skills of Peter Sagan. This race just suits him perfectly. He wins ahead of Gerrans and Contador, but also Sanchez as 4th can be happy with his result. It`s another nice result in San Sebastian for our squad.

Looks like an "easy" win for Sagan.. but LLS did also a very good as 4th! Missing the podium that close, is always a pity, but still: well done

Thanks all for the comments. Sagan indeed too strong. Don`t see anyone being able to beat him on those classics in the next 2-3 years at least not in PCM10.
@ purepasd: Not sure if I make a stage to stage report of this Tour. Probably I just make a fast overview as in Austria. There are 3-4 races at the same time including the more important Portugal and Pologne Tour.
Summary of July
Contador winning Le Tour was definitely the biggest news this months. Martin`s domination in Austria was a bit forgotten but it was definitely a great form check before the Tour of Pologne for the young Irish.
After the Ronde Van Belgie Sieberg also takes the Tour de Wallonie and jumped on top of the Continental ranking. Great signing by NetApp.
Pro Tour
Contador takes the Pro Tour lead after his Tour de France win. Cancellara and Andy are following. No Garmin rider within the top15, but Haussler is still in range as 18th.
Looking better in the team ranking, where Garmin is 8th but with a big gap to the dominating teams Leopard and Astana. But nevertheless we hope for some improvement there.
Rabobank and Ag2r in serious troubles. They need some nice results soon if they want to stay in the Pro Tour.
Skil and Colnago the best CT teams in this ranking but this isn`t worth a lot actually.
Continental
As mentioned Sieberg jumped on top of this ranking. Sicard and Viviani, who battled for a long time are coming next.
Thanks to Sieberg`s performance in the last weeks, NetApp also takes the lead in the team ranking ahead of Europcar and Saxobank. No sign of Skil or Colnago here.
CQ Ranking
Here Tony Martin is still leading due to his brilliant season so far. Also good to see that Contador wasn`t that dominant except of his Tour win.
LL Sanchez as 14th our best rider, but also D.Martin, Haussler and Boom are in the top20.
Astana and Leopard also dominate this ranking. But best here to see Garmin as 3rd. So our dominance in the CT races is shown here.
But most important in this ranking is that Team NetApp and Europcar would get a PT license next year at the moment. While the German team is already well placed Europcar is still fighting a close battle with Saxobank.
Monthly Awards
Contador was expected after his win in the Tour. Totally deserved for him.
Youth ranking weird as always. His Astana team mate had absolutely no top 10 result.
Race schedule for August
We`ll start with the Tour de Pologne with a very strong team. Dan Martin is the main leader but also Maaskant, Kessiakoff, Felline or Kreder are expected to bring good results while Hunter and Fischer are our sprinters there.
Then we have the parallel races Tour of Denmark and Volta a Portugal. We decided to take this race in our race schedule as Hesjedal needed a race to prepare for the Vuelta a Espana. There Rojas Gil will go for sprint wins in one of the last races for Garmin.
We also go to Germany for the Criterium Hainleite and Vattenfall Cyclassics. There we are aiming the win.
Boom is aiming the overall win in the Eneco Tour this year after just sending an average squad last year.
For the French PT classic GP Ouest-France Hesjedal is aiming a good placement. Other riders are preparing in the Tour du Limousin for the Vuelta.
So there are lots of races in August.

44 days, including the four days of the Vuelta. Just after the TdF... it's a bit heavy this month.
Good luck! |
