Interesting to leave Movistar, we'll see where that goes. 
Love those palmares though It's funny how the team seems to dominate particular races.

We are with Movistar for another 3 seasons. So a lot of racing still to come before the change.
And perhaps our strategy fits those races better

2018 SEASON OUTLOOK
Part 1
The 2018 cycling season is upon us. Here, I'll first present the current state of the WT division after having gone through the various changes over the three years, both in terms of new sponsors as well as promotions/relegations. Next, I'll present my team, changed, having gone through three transfer windows. I will finish off this part of the outlook by highlighting the rider and sponsor objectives for us this season. In part two of the outlook, I'll give you a look into the contract situation of our riders, highlight our transfer strategy and targets, and finish it off with the management targets and objectives.

The sponsors have responded to the team's purchase of Elia Viviani and his cobblestone skills by including the Ronde van Vlaanderen as one of the objectives. In fact, good results in the past couple of years sees four Monuments become a sponsor objective this time as opposed to just two last year. Also, the CWT Tours seem to have only one outcome favourable to our sponsors, first position! This is a major step up in expectation from the previous years. The sponsors are now focussing on total domination for their preferred races.
As far as our riders go, Nairo Quintana is going for the the Giro - Tour double this time along with the World ITT Championships. It is a tough ask to keep him fit through that entire duration. Mikel Landa will get a chance to lead his home GT after playing second fiddle to Nairo at last year's TDF and enduring a disappointing Giro. Elia Viviani will have the responsibility of putting in a better challenge for the sprint jersey at the Giro and the Tour. He will also be a leader in the flatter and cobbled classics. The team hopes he will be a good addition to the squad. The shadow of Valverde's retirement decision stills hangs over us. Will he, won't he? Guess we'll find out soon enough.

The first race of the year...
Tour de San Luis
The first race of the year for Movistar saw a surprisingly strong turnout from many teams. Movistar took Leopold Konig to this race as the leader despite his poor fitness. The team felt that the other leaders would probably be in a similar situation. The likes of Chris Froome, Tejay van Garderen, Tom Dumoulin, Carlos Betancur, Michal Kwiatkowski and some others were using this race as their season openers too. After a relatively quiet first couple of stages, Adriano Malori put in a good performance in the 3rd stage ITT to put himself into the top 5 and Leopold Konig put himself into the top 10. After another quiet stage 4, Leopold Konig finished in the leading group on stage 5 to move himself into the top 5. He further improved his position on stage 6 to get on to the podium. 3rd place is where he ended up as the last stage ended in a bunch sprint with no time gaps. It was a Sky 1-2 with Kwiatkowski edging out Froome by virtue of a stronger ITT. A good start for us.

The first big WT race of the season saw a moderately strong field emerge for their first outings. Movistar put their trust again in Ion Izagirre at the TDU, who had managed a Top 5 finish last year. He would be ably supported by Mikel Nieve and Alejandro Valverde. Despite some flat stages, the team did not send any sprinters and chose to concentrate only on the GC. Competition included the likes of Julian Alaphilippe, always a favourite at this event, Dan Martin, Moreno Moser, Tony Gallopin and Michael Matthews. There was a horde of top sprinters also starting, hoping that they could hang on through the one uphill finish without losing time.
Stage 1 - Flat with 1 major intermediate climb
A short first stage saw an early breakaway but nothing much else to report except the sprint finish. The breakaway was caught well before the line, even in such a short stage and the sprinters had their day in the sun (literally! It was scorching hot). John Degenkolb proved to be the fastest among the fast men and took his first stage of the season. Many more to come from him , I'm sure.

Stage 2 - Flat with 1 minor intermediate climb
The heat was beginning to take a major toll on riders already, preventing any courageous attacks. This stage followed a similar script to the last one and ended in a bunch sprint after the breakaway was caught. Degenkolb again took first place.

Stage 3 - Flat with 1 major intermediate climb
The teams of the sprinters chased down the early breakaway, catching them even before the halfway point in the race. This allowed for further attacks from the field but it was Valverde alone who could get away on a solo breakaway. He was left out to roast in the sun by the peloton before being caught with less than 30 km to go. The only climb of he day happened to fall towards the end of the race and it saw the first time gaps emerging in the field. First a breakaway of 3 riders - Alaphilippe, Moser and Matthews - went away at the base of the climb. They were quickly and caught followed by Ion Izagirre and Tony Gallopin on the downhill. This break survived until the end with Alaphilippe taking the sprint and the lead in the GC. The only time gaps now were those from the time bonuses at the finish.

Movistar - Ion Izagirre 5th, same time, took the lead in the team classification
Other important results - Michael Matthews 2nd, Moreno Moser 3rd, Dan Martin 4th, all with same time
Stage 4 - Undulating with 1 major intermediate climb
Thomas de Gendt put himself into the early breakaway. He was only 1'22" down on the leaders, thus forcing their teams to push hard to catch the breakaway. They were caught easily enough, with this stage also ending in a bunch sprint. This time it was Bryan Coquard who emerged victorious, with the leaders all in the leading group.

Stage 5 - Flat with uphill finish, including 1 minor intermediate climb
The deciding stage of this year's TDU was this one. Although not a very demanding stage, it provided enough of a challenge at the climb to the finish to separate the best from the rest. The early part of the stage saw no major incidents as the early breakaway kept themselves at arm's length of the peloton till almost the base of the climb to the finish. Once they were caught, the leaders launched themselves into strong attacks, but most could not sustain it owing to the early season rustiness. Moreno Moser powered away in his first race for his new team, to claim the stage and the GC. Ion Izagirre kept his deficit down to a minimum and ensured himself a 2nd place finish in the GC.

Movistar - Ion Izagirre 3rd, 18" behind, Mikel Nieve 7th. 1'4" behind, Gorkha Izagirre 10th, fell to 3rd place in the team classification
Other important results - Jay McCarthy 2nd, same time, Dan Martin 4th, Julian Alaphilippe 5th, 37" behind, Tony Gallopin 8th, 1'4" behind
Stage 6 - Flat
A very short and very flat stage provided the end for the TDU. The teams of the sprinters did not allow the early breakaway to get a substantial lead, again catching them with more than 20 km to spare. Movistar concentrated on eeping Ion safe throughout the stage. They managed it well. Bryan Coquard once again got the better of his more fancied opponent Degenkolb to grab another stage. Moreno Moser pulled off an unlikely 3rd place to increase his lead by 4".

I good start to the WT races for us this year. Ion put in a string showing against opponents of higher reputation to improve on his 5th place last year. This result along with the good work in San Luis bodes well for the season ahead. A good start too for Moser in his new team. As far as our next races go, this result will be a good platform to build up on.

Movistar went into their first sponsor objective with a fair amount of confidence, riding on the back of good results in the first two races. Like last year, Mikel Landa would be leading the team at Mallorca, and like last year he was the favourite. A strong climbing team ensured Movistar were favourites to retain their title. The main rival would again be Rohan Dennis, in addition to the likes of Simon Yates, Javier Moreno, Matteo Montaguti and Edoardo Zardini.
The folowing is a summary of stages...
Stage 1 - Flat
A very flat stage saw a bunch sprint at the end. Sonny Colbrelli proved to be too powerful for others and took the win.

Stage 2 - Flat with 3 major intermediate climbs
Another relatively flat stage with a couple of short sharp climbs saw another bunch sprint. Again, it was Colbrelli who took the win.

Stage 3 - Hilly with 3 major and 2 minor intermediate climbs
The main stage of the race decided events once again. The early breakaway was caught before the last and biggest climb of the day. Movistar were caught a little off guard with the early attack from Rohan Dennis, Gianluca Brambilla and Matteo Montaguti. They recovered soon enough and Landa chased down the break before the top of the climb. Dayer Quintana also put in the hard yards and slowly but surely caught up and then overtook the three attackers. Landa further attacked in the undulations after the descent of the last climb to increase his lead to the chasing pack. He took the win and Dayer ensured a Movistar 1-2.

Stage 4 - Hilly with 4 major intermediate climbs
The early part of the stage had the four climbs but the end was a flat dash to the finish. The five man early breakaway kept themselves clear at the head of the pack, with Jesus Herrada picking up four mountain top sprints to clinch the KOM jersey on this stage. The breakaway was caught on the line but Nathan Haas managed to grab the win. None of the riders in the break had any energy left and they decided to follow each other home instead of sprinting for the line. All other leaders finished in the pack.

Movistar - Jesus Herrada took the KOM jersey picking up four mountain sprints from the breakaway

Mikel Landa lived up to his pre-race billing to make it a hattrick of wins at Mallorca. He has made this race his own. Dayer Quintana impressed with a third place finish to give Movistar two podium places. This ensured a win in the Team classification. Jesus Herrada's superd ride in the last stage to win all the four climbs on offer gave us another jersey. To be fair, the competition here was not the best, but the sponsors were looking at this as an objective and the team had to deliver. And they did it well. Another stepping towards hopefully a successful season.
