Stage 15 | Oviedo - Lagos de Covadonga, 149 km
i.imgur.com/oFMoMDi.jpg

Julian nor I were looking forward to today. With a ride towards Lagos de Covadonga a climb of 16km with various sections of 16% to cut your legs off. Fan of the shorter and punchier stuff today was going to be an interesting day. Julian at the very least was familiar with long climbs being Colombian. For me this would be the first time riding such a long climb outside of training camps.

i.imgur.com/AsUolsn.jpg

Once again it was Alberto Contador who opened up the debates early by attacking on the Puerto del Torno, the climb ahead of Covadonga. Followed by Valverde, Betancur and Simon Clarke.

El Pistolero his attack straight away blew apart the Sky train leaving Froome and Henao to chase the quartet by themselves. Which is what they did with the joint help of D.Martin. Arredondo unwilling to waste any energy ahead of the final climb had Zubeldia, Didier and I keep the pace high in the peloton. Efforts which would pay off as the moment Froome joined Contador and his companions the pace in their group dropped allowing the rest of us to rejoin them ahead of the final climb.

i.imgur.com/WMK2h85.jpg

If the early breakaway had any hopes of reaching to the end with a 2 minute lead starting at the bottom of the climb up Covadonga, that hope was quickly kicked to ruins by Betancur his acceleration, once again joined by Valverde and Contador. Reducing the peloton to a mere 20-men in the process as Henao once again worked Froome and the rest back to the front. Zubeldia and Didier where unable to follow, but I was feeling superb today.

With the breakaway caught and the pace once again dropping Julian had me take the head of the peloton and kickstart the pace again. Not without its victims though. Mainly Contador was unable to follow! Other victims were Mollema and van Garderen as within no time we took a 50 second lead. Our group now made out of Julian and I, Valverde, Henao, D.Martin, Froome, Rodriguez and Betancur.

The break off was the cue for Henao to up the pace even more as he completely emptied himself for Froome. Last mentioned attacking with a dreadful 8km left. The Brit his acceleration ridiculously high as he flew away, not to be seen again until after the finish-line.

i.imgur.com/WMUWLiT.jpg

With Henao dropped off it was the other Colombian, Betancur who took over the pacing. In his own way naturally as he simply placed a gazillion attacks, the rest of us seemingly following at his mercy.

At the 4km mark he placed another one of his stabbing attacks and the one which proved too much for both me and D.Martin. The two of us passed by a yellow locomotive by the name Contador as the Spaniard seemed to have regained himself during the climb.

Not the same could be said for Mollema who was losing his podium and van Garderen who was losing time on me! The American finishing over a minute after I crossed the line as 8th on the day.

Nicholas is certainly getting better as the race goes on Smile

Yes Arcier is doing better than I expected.

Spoiler
Which is partly because at the time of the Vuelta I underestimated the effect the recuperation stat had in the long term, making him a better GC rider than I wanted him to be. Changed them around a bit to still make him good in them, but from now on he should seriously fade in the last week. Embarassed

Stage 16 | San Martín del Rey Aurelio - La Farrapona. Lago de Somiedo, 160 km
i.imgur.com/NAoFPLi.jpg

With the queens stage the Vuelta organization decided to map out what might be the hardest stage of the entire year. With five climbs of the 1st category and all five of them made up of sections of around 10% some even as high as 20%. A lot of riders would be asking themselves what they were doing here today. Multiple times.

During our training-camp last month our team had noted down this stage as one for Arredondo to open the hunt on the mountain jersey, but with his good classification that plan had gone out of the window. Nonetheless Josu wanted someone to give it a try and it was Stijn who became the lucky victim as he escaped with Pardilla and Tjallingii right from the start.

i.imgur.com/fSdMte5.jpg

On the following three climbs (all on which Stijn placed 1st) the pace in the peloton wasn’t too high. Nonetheless I could feel that my wonder legs had left me and I was really struggling on my bike even having trouble to hold Didier his wheel for most of the day.

In the valley ahead of the Puerto de San Lorenzo it was Daniel Teklehaimanot who joined Stijn and his companions after accelerating out of the peloton. The Eritrean right away making life hell for Stijn as the pace he laid upon the break on the penultimate climb, made the former Belgian champion drop within minutes.

i.imgur.com/UfwpBdF.jpg

A fate I would meet in kind on the same climb as Betancur placed an attack joined by Poels. Right away causing Sky to place Boasson Hagen and Henao at the head of the peloton. Increasing the pace to a level few could follow. It were Contador, Valverde, Rodriguez, Arredondo. D.Martin. Denifl, Brajkovic and Mollema who could keep up with the Sky Train. They weren’t the only ones ahead of me though as Van Garderen, Ulissi and Vanendert formed their own little group. Making the situation by the time we passed the top into.

<Betancur, Poels, Teklehaimanot, Pardilla> 51” <Group Froome> 1’05” <Group van Garderen> 1’15” <Group Arcier>

In the descent (normally where I create or reduce the damage) I was reduced to simply following Zubeldia and Didier as they tried to keep my losses to a minimum. My to bitter depths sunken morale being raised a little by the red BMC jersey of van Garderen far up to the road.

i.imgur.com/6xZQ0GA.jpg

At the bottom of La Farrapona the situation has turned into.

<Group Froome> 50” <Brajkovic, Denifl> 58” <Ulissi, van Garderen, Vanendert> 42” <Group Arcier>

With just under 3 minutes behind on the front group the day didn’t seem lost yet, but reality would soon come knocking as the likes of Talansky, Monfort and Moreno passed me on the climb. Guys I was beating in these Spanish mountains just a few days ago. Reality had finally welcomed itself onto my doorstep and left a message. A message telling me I had lost over 9 minutes by the time I rolled over the finish-line. I was finally put back in my place. Thankfully there was a rest day tomorrow.

The pleasant sounding news-anchor on the radio was just about to report the Champion League qualification round scores in her Galician accent. Just when Julian turned off the car and the radio. Clearly not a football fan.

Julian and I found ourselves in a dark forest not far out from Ortigueira where we would start tomorrow. A small light in between the trees our destination. El Pistolero, El Imbadito and Bananito where already waiting. (Bananito who was dubbed Waffles by the Belgian press after he was seen eating at a Belgian waffle house in the morning before his LBL win, perfect name to call him if you wanted to piss him off.) El Pistolero was the first to welcome us, as he quickly got to the point.

“Oleg has offered to pay each single one of you €100,000 if you help us beat those hijo de putas at Sky.”

i.imgur.com/Pv29V0i.jpg

Waffles let out a soft whistle, clearly a fan of oil dollars. Alejandro on the other hand was less positive. “And how exactly do you expect to beat Froome? Your form has dropped massively this last week. And nobody ”

“Don’t worry about it, I’m back to where I was before.”

Alejandro had his friendship with Alberto. Waffles and Julian where simply in it for the money. I just wanted to see Tissot beat Sky in the WorldTour ranking this year a goal only possible if Froome did not win this Vuelta. Nonetheless Contador the last real matador in the peloton together with Cancellera was the man who would have to make it all possible.

“Still won’t gain enough on him in the mountains.” Julian countered.

“Maybe. Maybe not.” Alberto shrugged. “I’m not going to crack Chris in the mountains though.”

A short half hour later and a couple of handshakes later we all went our own way. Bonds were forged in between us though for this final week in Spain.

Stage 17 | Ortigueira - A Coruña, 174 km
i.imgur.com/ue8N0xH.jpg

After what seemed like a barrage of mountainous stages today was a welcome change. With the peloton making it half a rest day. The escape group with Stijn, Tjallingii, Norman Hansen, Mori and Albasini was clear to ride for the victory rather quickly.

A personal disappointment as I was feeling great today and felt I could compete for the win after my disappointment of two days ago.

In the final it was Devolder who was fooled into chasing a seemingly deciding attack of Tjalingii which killed both the Dutch and the Belgian their chances. Albasini was the favourite on paper, but it was Garmin-Sharp their Norman Hansen who won the final sprint ahead of Mori.

In the peloton sprint I finished 3rd behind Demare and Kristoff, once again confirming my good form for the day.

Stage 18 | A Estrada - Mont Castrove. Meis, 174 km
i.imgur.com/jPpbGtk.jpg

Todays finish would lay in Meis which laid exactly 1600m after the top of the Monte Castrove a 5km long climb with an average gradient of 11%, which we would have to climb twice. Yes the Vuelta organization had some fun drawing up this one.

Even in the streaming race the usual script was stuck to. An early breakaway with our own Didier, joined by Fedrigo, Salerno, Degand and Kiryienka taking their leave.

Eventhough Didier and Kiryienka weren’t the greatest of partners in the break. The Belarusian unwilling to relay hiding behind the fact that Froome was wearing the red jersey. The group still maanged to gain a lead of 18 minutes, securing one of them to get the stage win.

i.imgur.com/TBXGqNM.jpg

On the first ride up the Monte Castrove it was Betancur who opened the registers. A knowing glance being exchanged by Contador, Arredondo and Valverde as the Colombian pocket climber quickly gained a 30 second lead. Which was reason enough for Froome to arrogantly display just how strong he was by opening up the chase himself. Tearing the peloton apart causing a group made out of Froome, Contador, Valverde, Mollema, Rodriguez, Ulissi, D.Martin, Arredondo and I to break off the peloton. Van Garderen who had been cracking the entire week was on the bad end of the shift today as well.

In the following descent the pace would drop as Boasson Hagen and van Garderen were allowed to return to our group. Something I personally did not mind, as I felt confident enough in my good legs to drop van Garderen off again on the final climb.

It was now Boasson Hagen who took over the reigns and led the chase on Betancur who had collected a lead of just over a minute.

i.imgur.com/1FEigcO.jpg

What later that evening would be dubbed as the “Stare down at Combarro” the breaking point of this years Vuelta might have happened. As we entered the little Galician town it was Contador who attacked out of the back of the group. And as if in cue followed by Rodriguez, Mollema, Valverde, Martin and van Garderen.

Both Froome and Boasson Hagen were looking at me and Julian. They were expecting us to help them with the chase! Froome the fool had thrown Henao overboard on the previous climb and he was now paying for his stupidity. As the newspapers wrote that night. Here where the two strongest teams of the year staring each other down, unwilling to help their rival. With good reason!

The pale Brit kept yelling at us in his bad Spanish to relay with them, but both Julian and I simply shook our heads, blaming fatigue as our reason. Reality was that both Julian and I were feeling great and weren’t going to spend these legs to help Froome rejoin the front of the race.

i.imgur.com/zwJe4wM.jpg

Resigned to his fate Boasson Hagen re-upped the pace of our group able to latch onto Mollema, Martin and van Garderen, the trio unable to following Contador his pace up front.

Where everyone expected for Froome to unleash his otherworldly powers on the final climb he Brit who was looking even paler than his usual self stayed seated on his bike. Staring down at his STEM. The Brit was having a bad day! Reason for Julian to dash away.

Froome his worse was still my best as the best I could do was follow in his wheel. Which wasn’t all that bad, as he still managed to drop D.Martin, Mollema and van Garderen. A bizarre turn around in this Vuelta on the cards.

i.imgur.com/TslKhI7.jpg

During all this drama it was Fredrigo who took the stage win ahead of Degand. Didier would finish 5th behind Kiryienka thanks to a day in which they both killed each others chances to win the stage.

At the end of the day Arredondo lost one spot in the GC, while I gained two. With both Mollema and van Garderen seeming to fade, things where looking bright for the both of us. Froome had held onto his lead in the GC, but took a serious hit as Contador gained back over a minute.

Stage 19 | Salvaterra do Miño / Cangas do Morrazo, 176.5 km
i.imgur.com/2qGOVgt.jpg

The continues rain had been a welcome change from the heat in the South at the start of the Vuelta, but was now really chipping away at everyone in the peloton. Nonetheless Devolder, Albasini, Pauwels, Montaguti and Cummings still decided to go out on the early break. The five men gaining a 9 minute lead, during which Stijn desperately tried to score points for the mountains classification, but the Belgian simply did not have the energy anymore to compete with the superior climbers in his group. As he had to let go quite early on the final climb of the day.

i.imgur.com/2SwZCp3.jpg

On that same climb it were Betancur, Valverde and Contador who made good on their promise as the trio launched separate attacks. The Sky train each time having to sacrifice a man to catch them back. With 1km left on the climb Froome was left to lead the pack himself, exactly what we wanted. With 500m left on the climb it was my turn to twist the dagger in Sky their heart as I accelerated away at the head of the group. Grinding my teeth as I turned my pedals the fastest I could all the way across the top, diving into the descent.

i.imgur.com/uZ9Ruwy.jpg

With Contador and the rest of the group in my wheel I took major risks in the wet descent. Risks a certain Christopher Froome was too scared to take. As the Brit was quickly dropped from our group. And as if the cycling gods where smiling down on me, Van Garderen wasn’t able to follow the pace either.

i.imgur.com/stl2cHB.jpg

By the time we reached the bottom we or rather I had managed to gain a lead of around 1 minute. Petty aspirations almost killed us though as nobody was willing to relay with me. Leaving me to hammer away at the head of our group. Just when Froome who had been rejoined by some of his men started to gain time back on us, it was Stijn Devolder who had dropped back from the front who provided a helping hand. A hand which would plunge the knife through Froome as our lead quickly grew towards the two minutes. A wink from Contador as we crossed the line told the entire story of the day. Froome had lost the battle and most likely the war.

At the front it was Montaguti who kept Albasini his Vuelta checkbook closed as he out-sprinted the Swiss for the victory.

Stage 20 | Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil - Puerto de Ancares, 164 km
i.imgur.com/EviSgoN.jpg

One last time. One last day of going to the absolute limit. We already have had the queens stage, but today would feel just as royally bad after three weeks of constant pressure on my legs.

The tiredness was clear to spot in the peloton today as the early breakaway got caught without much effort about halfway through the stage. One man did seem energized today at that was our very own Arredondo.

On the penultimate climb of the day the Alto de Folgueiras de Aigas, Julian right away wanted me to set the pace at the first inclining meters which smashed us with a good 18%. Giving nearly my all I tried to make the race as hard as possible as I placed myself at the head of the pack. The group slowly thinning out to a group of 40-men.

With about 1km left to the top it where the big guns that blazed one more time as Froome himself placed an attack. Quickly followed by Contador, Betancur, Valverde, Arredondo and Rodriguez.

i.imgur.com/6lLxgFv.jpg

Cue for me to leave the pave to others as I planted myself in Mollema his wheel. The Dutchman desperately trying to save his top-5 GC position. A mission he would fail as he (and I) was eventually dropped by Talansky and van Garderen. With the two Americans being over 3 minutes behind me in the GC I knew I had to just keep my own pace to the top and not blow myself up.

Arredondo was unable to win todays stage as one man proved superior. Contador finished well over a minute ahead of the rest. The best of that rest was Julian though as he out-sprinted Rodriguez for second.

Almost 6 minutes later I would finish in a group with Mollema, D.Martin, Majka and that kid who won the Dauphine once. Losing less than a minute on Van Garderen and Talansky meaning that as long as I sat on my bike tomorrow, I would finish this Vuelta as 9th. A result I deemed unrealistc after getting dropped by everyone and their grandparents (I mean Horner) in Paris-Nice earlier this year.

Stage 21 | Santiago de Compostela, 10 km
www.procyclingstats.com/races/profilesmaps/2014-01/Vuelta-a-Espana-Stage-21-ITT-1389476596.png

In a weird trance-like state I crossed the finish-line (for the last time this year) after my 10km epilogue. Officially finishing the Vuelta of 2014 as ninth. Which also happened to be my finishing place in todays stage. A mere 17 seconds behind stage winner Tejay van Garderen. As I passed the waiting area on my way to the team bus I congratulated the American. Funny how it’s always easy to find someone you’ve beat likable.

Although the Vuelta had been great for our team with two stage wins and two riders finishing in the top 10. There was a hint of disappointment as Julian was unable to defend his 4th place in the GC as he dropped down to 5th behind Betancur. Nonetheless we could be proud as we still graced the podium as we finished this Vuelta as best team. Only losing Irizar in our 3 week trip across Spain.

i.imgur.com/cMwxpFg.jpg

I briefly thought back to how disappointed I had been back in June when Oliver Vasco delivered the news that I was ineligible for this years World Championships. After these three weeks I was rather happy that I wouldn’t have to race for a couple of months. The engine was empty and desperately in the need of some rest. Luckily it had been able to work nearly perfect in these last two weeks with two wins as a result.

A trip by the Tinkoff-Saxo hotel and a brand new Swiss bank account filled with €100,000 later (This Oleg lad did not waste anytime), I was on my way to Malta for a well earned vacation.

Re Leone
That was a rather long winded Vuelta, but a big thank you to everyone who read it and enjoyed it. Grin

@the_hoyle
Thanks! It was mostly a stats error on my part which made Arcier this good in a GT, but I've decided to stick with it and see what the future brings. Wink
