To me the concept of obligatory voting seems a bit odd. I see it as a bit of an enfringment on the individuals rights. We don't have that here and I suppose it shows. Last years municipal elections saw a turnout of about 66% if I reember correctly. The municipal elections have never been that popular, though.
Some municipalities saw a turnout of about 88% whilst others were down to 54%. The parliamentary elections usually have a somewhat higher turnout; I think next years elections might end up at about 70% +/- 3%.

Obligatory voting should be enforced everywhere imo. Its like going to school, its obligatory because its good for you (you might think your vote doesn't count but what if everyone thought that).

Forcing people who have no interest and no idea about politics to vote is quite stupid.

But they're not forcing them to do so.

But you know, when I went there I saw these old people, barely able to walk, dragging themselves just to vote on a bunch of bullshitters. Those people should not be forced to leave their homes when going to a vote is a day trip for them.
I hope you know what I mean. |

Still I read that despite being mandatory, not everyone votes in Belgium and those who don't, though they should get sued (according to the law), are not.

It's not technically mandatory to vote, but if you don't you're an idot (the Greek root means to not particapate in govt.)

That was just this once. Normally you get sued. |

Obligatory voting?Jeez, are you communists or nazis?
Every man can decide, if not, you are not free country...
In Czech republic, usual attendance of elections is 30-50% percent, for parlament bit higher.

What exactly makes you an idiot, when nobody who is a candidate has the same world view and opinions like you?Better to elect nobody then someone who is against your principles imo...
To be clear, i have never missed the elections.

My technical place of residents is 8 hours from here, by car. It's a church down the street a mile. We tackle most of our elections in one go. It's different in other parts of the country, but for us it's a bit of paper that you fill in the right bubble on. We had three, 1 for national/state/local offices, 2 for state propositions, like abolishing the death penalty, mandating labeling for GMO's, legalizing pot, stuff like that.
They send it with several envelopes. When I send it back it's envelopeception. I have to sign a thing that says I am who I say I am. It must work, because voter fraud is nearly non-existant. One study I read found that there were 271 cases of voter fraud of the course of some 20 years in the state of Kansas, and most of those were honest mistakes, like a mother voting for her son who was off at college.
The write in section is so you can vote for someone who isn't on the ballot. This makes it so Baseball could vote for Ron Paul even though the official Republican ticket is Romney/Ryan.

The communist ideaology is not that bad (allthough impossible), but the killings that were made were not made in the name of communism. Those actions were taken by insane leaders such as Stalin.
The only problem with communism is that it's fundamentaly impossible, there is no society on earth where it can function. Communism is a guaranty for stability, not progress. To not progress is against human nature.
Abit of socialism, though, has never done any harm

Communism is filthy ideology from the start for me, even before it was raped by soviet leaders (btw. many of the killings were really in the name of communism, when they try to bring it to life).
And why it is filthy imo? Because it is incredibly stupid to think that every man should be on equal social and wealth level, not depending on their abilities and dilligence. Because of that the idea is one of the most stupid things ever and in name of this ideology (top revent people from demonic capitalism idea), our countries were bordered by barbed wire, you will never understand it in north Europe.
If you would ask me, both communism and capitalism are shite and make slaves and dumb vegetables from people. But people like it obviously.

Imo Karl Marx was a very intelligent man with great ideas.
Ideas later abused and misunderstood, though... |

I have to agree with Ian Butler on a certain level; communism might be a bad idea in the sence that it is impossible, but people have turned it into something else. I suppose you could argue that nearly all communist states have been under the leadership of a raving lunatic

Completely agree on that one. Communism is a great idea in the sense that no one should be born in to poverty or privilege and that we need to acknowledge that a lot of non-prestigious tasks are essential to upholding the society. Therefore I think it makes sense that the reward for doing something of high prestige shouldn't be much higher than for performing basic society-sustaining tasks. Everyone should get what they need in return for doing their best.
In regards of leadership dictatorship has (more or less) only one major flaw: No human are suited to be a dictator.
