Hope you can fight with Anton on a next stage, because 1'30'' it's still small with 6 stages left. |

Thanks Dienblad, baia, Avin, Toom3k and Menchov. The goal is clear now: A podium with Menchov.
Giro d'Italia: stage 16
Belluno - Nevagal 12.7 km
After a rest day, the riders continue their tour around the Italian mountains with a 13 km time trial to Nevagal. On the route is a part of the Monte Faverghere. The first kilometres are flat but most climbers wlll be able to make up enough time in the last 7 km.
The first top time was set by Fabio Duarte. The Colombian keeps getting better and better this Giro. It's such a shame he had that small injury last month. He almost catches Popovych during his TT and finishes with a time of 29'36".
The Italian time trial champion Marco Pinotti rode a very good Giro so far. He is currently 8th in the GC. He uses his TT skil's on the flat part and crushes all other times at the intermediate check. He could keep up on the climb and his time: 29'00".
Michele Scarponi rode a very quiet Giro so far. His results are not extraordinary but also not bad. He sits in 6th currently and this TT won't help him to move up. His time is 29'13".
Joaquin Rodriguez faded the last couple of days after controlling the Giro in it's first part. He dissapoints again today and rides even slower as Duarte. His time: 29'47".
Our leader, Denis Menchov, hopes to use his TT powers and experience to not lose any time today. He rides very strong and almost catches up to Rodriguez in the last km. He finishes after 28'41".
Igor Anton, winner of the last stage, hopes to increase his gap to Menchov today. He succeeds and rides a strong time of 28'27".
Cadel Evans find out yesterday that he probably isn't strong enough to beat Basso. He now concentrates on the 2nd place. He can't use his TT powers today as he rides bad with a time of 29'13".
La Maglia Rosa, Ivan Basso has controlled the Giro so far. And he does it again today lowering Antons time with 7". He takes the win with a time of 28'20".

A good TT by Menchov. Finishing third is a good result and clearly shows he isn't tiring yet while some others are. Anton is now 1'30" in front, a gap possible to bridge in the final TT but Menchov can't lose more time now.

Giro d'Italia: stage 17
Feltre - Tirano 226.1 km
Another mountain stage. But not a hard one or a MTF. The Tonale and Aprica are tough climbs but the Aprica is probably not steep enough for attacks and the finish is after the descent so good descenders could come back. No attacks of the favourites are expected. It will be very important to get into the break today as they have a good chance to survive.

A break is formed on the long flat before the climbs. Some good climbers upfront are Peraud, Sioutsou and DiLuca. Their advantage is 4' at the intermediate sprint.
Two Geox riders use a small hill after the intermediate sprint to jump away from the pack. It are Valls and Duarte who try to bridge the gap to the break as we have no one in front.
Together with Anza, who attacked a little later, they can close the gap to the break and the 11 men break turns into a 14 men break.
A stupid move, it turns out. BMC, Euskaltel and Movistar started a chase in the peloton and all the escapees get caught at the start of the Passo Tonale.
That's the sign for another Geox-rider to attack. Carlos Sastre has not showed himself yet this Giro but could this be his stage? No reaction from the peloton where the pace is not hard.
Sastre took the whole Tonale to his account. He crosses the top alone but how big is his gap to the bunch?
The first of the pack cross the Tonale exact 5 minutes later. The group is still over 100 riders big so the pace was rather slow. The pack was lead by Sanchez for a part of the downhill and he brought the pack back to 4'30" at the start of the Aprica.
Some favourites use the Aprica to attack. Evans and Basso try to reduce the group and maybe take some time on an opponent. Menchov doesn't react immediately and makes a steady pace.
And that was a good decision as he and some others could come back to Basso and Evans. This climb is clearly not steep enough to make any differences.
Sastre is still riding an front and is the first over the top of the Aprica. The attacks made the pack come closer, they pass the top 1 minute behind Sastre. It would be great if he could keep up!
He rode a strong descent and he didn't lose much time. The pack is now 45" behind with still 5 flat km to go. GO Carlos!
We're in the last km and Carlos is giving everyting. The pack neared as Basso and Evans started sprinting very hard.
SASTRE WINS! What a great win for him and the team. He has been dissapointing so far this Giro but now he takes this beatiful win. Roche wins the sprint for 2nd. Menchov is ofcourse in this group.

Giro d'Italia: stage 18
Morbegno - San Pellegrino Terme 147.0 km
The easiest stage in the last week, still has one tough climb in it. The finish is right after the end of the descent of the Ganda. We will probably see a sprint with a small group or a surviving breakaway. We will try again to get in the breakaway.
After a hard fight, four riders could establish today's breakaway. And we have someone in there. Valls is together with Noe, Anza and Pedersen. Nobody in the pack starts to chase so they will probably fight for the win.
Noe could create gap on the Ganda. Anza was with Valls but he couldn't close the gap so the Italian now rides away from Rafa. Pedersen is already dropped.
Some contenders made some surprising attacks. Anton and Rodriguez are in front of a favourite's group were Evans now tries to get away. Menchov as always doesn't counter but he let's Sastre do the pace. One rider missing at the front is Ivan Basso. He is some groups behind with his teammate Smyd. Strange tactic from him.
After the first part of the descent, Anza and Noe are still in front. Followed at 1'30" by four riders: Anton, Rodriguez, Evans and Pinotti. Menchov is in the second group were Sastre and Valls, who dropped back, are working hard.
Basso is in a larger group still more as 3' behind the leaders. He must have a really bad day due to the weather.
Anza and Noe are still in front with 5 km to go. Valls and Sastre brought back the Anton group. They are to far off the leaders. Will Anza win for the second time this Giro or will Noe take a great win?
It's Noe who could take a great win comming out of Anza's wheel. A great crown on a magnificent career for the old warrior. After becoming the oldest pink jersey wearer in 2007, he now becomes the oldest stage winner in the Giro. Menchov finishes safely in the group but sees Anton getting further away due to bonus seconds.
Basso finishes 1'22" later. We don't know what was up with him. Strange...

Too bad Valls was not strong enough to stay with Noe and Anza. Menchov is now almost 2' behind Anton. Too much for the TT so he will attack the next two stages.

Although Basso had a bad day I doubt that anybody will catch up with him. It is however interesting who will get the second and thrid place. Anton is doing really great and it seems that Evans has peaked earlier and is having difficulties. With two hard stages coming up Anton may pass him and perhaps you're going to fight Evans for the third place despite the ITT in the end. |

Thanks for the Banana's baia and Dienblad! Also thanks to Humlesnur, FuglsangxTH3 and Alexanderlens.
I made another photobucketaccount for now. Will use more as one account for not having this problem again. I hope the older images will be viewable as soon as possible.

Giro d'Italia: stage 19
Bergamo - Macugnaga 208.4 km
Another mountain top finish. The stage is again long but only two climbs today. The first is a warmup for the last, which is not very steep but fairly long. Menchov will try to get closer to Anton.
No break was formed yet at the intermediate sprint. Menchov sat at the front of the pack and was very smart to take 6" behind yesterday's winner Noe who is again attacking.
The old warrior clearly isn't tired yet as he is again in the break today. Only two riders joined him: Zandio and Denifl. They can start the first climb with an advantage of 6'.
There, one rider attacks out of the pack to bridge the gap to the peloton. It's Duarte for Geox. Is this part of the plan to get Menchov on the podium?
He used his climbing skills to reach the break before the end of the mountain. Noe is, not the first time this Giro, the first over the mountain. There is a lot of fog around the mountain but that doesn't cause any trouble in the descent.
The chase is organised by mainly the Euskaltel squad with a little help from BMC. They can bring the pack to 3'30" at the foot of the final climb.
Some riders made early attacks on the last climb. It were Roche, Garzelli, Anton and Rujano. The later three are fighting each other for a top 10 but the Spaniard is Menchov's opponent in the GC. Sastre and Wyss start to chase them.
They could keep the gap under 30" and when Basso took the lead, the gap was closed immediately. Menchov follows on the right. The break is then already long gone.
Basso's pace together with smaller attacks from Rujano made for the formation of an elite group of 8 men. Anton, Evans, Rujano, Basso, Scarponi, , Kruiswijk, Menchov and Vanendert seem the strongest. Biggest name missing is again Rodriguez.
Menchov then made an attack. He could create a gap but was followed by Evans who can overtake him and can create a bigger gap. Menchov gives everyting to stay away from the group but his gap isn't very big.
Evans has a comfortable lead under the 1 km banner. Menchov is still in second but Basso is approaching. Anton is also not far off.
Evans takes the win. Just as it seemed he was fading, the Australian striked back. Basso rode a very strong last km and almost closed the gap to Evans. Behind is a close sprint between Anton and Menchov for the 3rd place.
The sprint ends positive for us as the Russian could hold off Anton and snag the bonus seconds. Combined with the earlier, he takes 14" back to Anton today. Not much but it's a start.

A good stage for Menchov as he could take some time back on Anton. Those 6" of the intermediate sprint were very smart and holding off the Spaniard in the final sprint was very strong. More time needed tomorrow though.
