Project 1T4i - Bye, bye!
Avin Wargunnson
Nice move from your sprint train, Frohlinger blocked Landbouwkrediet? Smile
I'll be back

Pellizotti2
Thanks tsmoha, Freitas and Avin W. It'll be very hard to repeat Kittel's 17 victories, but I'll do my best. And Avin, of course Fröhlinger blocked them on purpose. Pfft

fuoridibici.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/gentwev.jpg

We're finally here, at the first of the three most prestigious cobbled classics. GW is the easiest of them, and also the least cobbled one. Only three sections on the route, but two of those are up the incredibly steep Kemmelberg. It's not a long climb, but the combination of cobbles and steepness makes it really difficult. Unfortunately for the non-sprinters, we have 50 kilometers of flat after the second passage over the Kemmelberg. A mass sprint is likely.

Result irl:
1Tom BoonenQuickstep Cycling Team4h35'00
2Daniele BennatiLeopard Treks.t.
3Tyler FarrarTeam Garmin - Cervélos.t.
4André GreipelOmegaPharma - Lottos.t.
5Lloyd MondoryAG2R - La Mondiales.t.
6Mitchell DockerSkil - Shimanos.t.
7Bernhard EiselHTC - Highroads.t.
8Kristof GoddaertAG2R - La Mondiales.t.
9Lars BoomRabobank Cycling Teams.t.
10Baden CookeSaxoBank - SunGards.t.

Tom Boonen managed to hold the pressure of being the favourite and sprinted to victory in the big mass sprint, beating better sprinters like Daniele Bennati, Tyler Farrar and André Greipel. I guess the pain from the cobbles earlier were still in their legs. Best placed Skil rider was Docker at a magnificent 6th place, a result that will be very hard to repeat.

Skil squad:
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_team.jpg
Veelers and De Backer are co-leaders today. The first one because he's our strongest cobbler and the latter one because he's in better shape than his team mate.
Curvers, Docker and De Kort are luxury domestiques, who might once again get the chance to try something, while Van Zandbeek, Chaigneau and Han will, as usual, collect bottles for their team mates.

Favourites:
***** Boonen
**** Cancellara, Hushovd
*** Gilbert, Flecha, Vansummeren
** Chavanel, Boom, Eisel, Bennati
* Farrar, Hoogerland, Veelers, Steegmans, Cavendish

After winning E3 Prijs easily last week, Boonen starts here with a big pressure on his shoulders. It shouldn't be problem for him though, as the race fits him perfectly.
Cancellara missed the decisive move in E3 Prijs and looked quite weak, but you can never discount him.
Third and last big favourite is Hushovd. Just like Cancellara, he missed the split in E3 Prijs, but a strong attack almost got him back. I don't think he'll miss a split again and he will be deadly if he's in the first group in the final kilometer.

Gent-Wevelgem
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_1.jpg
Just like most of the earlier cobbled classics, GW's difficult part comes quite far out from the finish. The Kemmelberg is likely to decide the race and we'll do our best to sit at the front over it. If there are any splits, we'll have a Skil rider in the first group. Definitely.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_2.jpg
Tim Roe (BMC) and Grischa Niermann (Rabo) was the first escapees today. They were joined by ten others a few kilometers later, forming the day's break.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_3.jpg
They were never allowed any gap though, as Leopard, Garmin and Rabobank were at the front, stabilizing the gap at around three minutes.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_4.jpg
When we reached the first hills of the day, the ever aggressive Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil) attacked up one of the narrow climbs together with Nico Sijmens (Cofidis).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_5.jpg
No reaction in the peloton, and the two late attackers were increasing their advantage. The Kemmelberg showed how hard it is by splitting the peloton even though the pace was so low over it. About 40 riders left in the pack.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_6.jpg
Then a dark moment for Leopard, as Cancellara crashed at an extremely bad time. His whole team immediately stopped to wait for him. It didn't help though and he never made it back.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_7.jpg
At the front of the race, Sijmens and Hoogerland dropped the early escapees one by one up the Kemmelberg. Amazingly, they were over five minutes ahead!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_8.jpg
An insane pace by Garmin completely destroyed the field on the Kemmelberg. Only three riders were able to follow the Garmin boys. A very strong group containing Hushovd, Vansummeren, Farrar, Hammond, Gilbert, Roelandts and De Backer.
Veelers struggled over the climb and were sitting in the next group a minute behind De Backer, together with Boonen, Cancellara and Chavanel.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_9.jpg
A smart tactic by Garmin then as Hushovd attacked. Nobody responded and he quickly built up a gap of 30 seconds, as his team mates stopped pacing.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_10.jpg
Gilbert then realised the danger. Vansummeren were policemaning him in favour for his team mate while De Backer were doing his best to follow.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_11.jpg
Gilbert's attack cracked De Backer, but Vansummeren jumped around his countryman as he slowed down. De Backer were not far behind Gilbert, together with Flecha.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_12.jpg
It was too late for everyone though, as Sijmens and Hoogerland were entering the last two kilometers of this race with a good buffer. Sijmens were leading them out, while Hoogerland were biding his time.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_13.jpg
Surprisingly, Sijmens proved to be too strong for Hoogerland and the Belgian could celebrate a brilliant win on home soil. Very weird sprint.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_14.jpg
Hushovd held his gap to Vansummeren and Gilbert to take third. Vansummeren's 4th place here strengthens his WT lead.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gw_15.jpg
A minute behind them, Flecha outsprinted a completely exhausted De Backer for 6th place. 7th is much better than we had even dreamt about though, and we're of course very happy.

Doing great with De Backer. And funny to see Sijmens win a big race. Pfft

7th is a good result with Skil in Gent-Wevelgem. And sometimes, breakaways win!

Thanks. It was a great race for us, it's too bad that these late escapes tend to succeed. Anyway, no complainments from us!

Stage 3: Porto-Vecchio (ITT)
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/cri_3.jpg
To shake up the overall standings a bit more, the organizers has decided to put a timetrial as last stage in this race. Not a good idea according to us, since it doesn't favour Bonnin and Geniez. Anyway, we'll do our best to stay up high in the GC.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/cri_3_1.jpg
All the early weak times were completely blown out of the water by Kittel. Easy match for him, even though his shape isn't brilliant.

It didn't take long until Kittel had to step down from the leading seat though, as American TT champion Dave Zabriskie took on the course.

A big surprise then, as Blel Kadri absolutely destroyed Zabriskie's time. Very, very surprising, and a great ride by the young Frenchman.

Wiggins was weak yesterday, and wasn't on his best today either. A bit better today though, as he clocked one of the top times.
10'33

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/cri_3_5.jpg
His team mate Froome was also dropped yesterday, but showed that his shape isn't bad at least. The Briton definitely had a Cancellara-motor in his bike today. What a ride.
10'16

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/cri_3_7.jpg
Geniez had just two seconds advantage over Froome in the overall standings and was of course passed by the Sky man. Still a good ride.
10'36

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/cri_3_8.jpg
Second Skil rider in a row then, Bonnin. A terrific ride on stage one placed him 4th in the GC, but he was also passed by Froome today. However, his time was good enough to keep his team mate Geniez behind him by just one second!
10'46

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/cri_3_6.jpg
Third overall, Vincenzo Nibali. He wasn't able to follow Löfkvist and Vanendert yesterday, but a good ride today can definitely secure him second place in the GC. Motivated by that, he clocked a great time.
10'20

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/cri_3_9.jpg
Vanendert fought hard to save his second place, but his lack of timetrialling skills costed him too much today. He lost out to Nibali by just three seconds!
10'46

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/cri_3_10.jpg
No doubt who was the strongest in this race. His attack cracked everyone on stage one and today he once again proved his strength.
10'13

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/cri_3_11.jpg
Löfkvist was at an own level here. No one even came close and the Swede could step up to the podium to receive his yellow jersey for a third and final time. Great racing by him. Well done Thomas.

Goss? Somehow nice Smile

Avin Wargunnson
Strange results in Catalunya, i dont like this race in PCM.
But great results for Skill again, with top10 finishes in Corsica and Belgium Smile
I'll be back

Pellizotti2
@tsmoha/Avin W: Indeed a really weird result. The "mountain top finish" stage created almost no gaps and Goss lost about 20 seconds. I don't like the race either. It's too hard to create gaps.

KBC Driedaagse de Panne is a Belgian stage race held in late March. It's one for the sprinters, cobblers and timetriallists, since the stages require those specialities. Especially the timetriallists has a great chance of overall success. Record holder with most overall wins is home Belgian Eric Vanderaerden with 5 victories, while his fellow countryman Sébastien Rosseler is the most recent winner.

After three gapless stages, the timetrial proved to be decisive for the final General Classification. Radioshack man Rosseler took the TT course best, wrapping up the stage win and sealing the overall victory in the process.

2011 route:

Stage 1: Middelkerke - Oudenaarde
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_1.jpg
Might create some gaps if the favourites race it.

Stage 2: Zottegem - Sint Idesbald
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_2.jpg
Definitely a mass sprint.

Stage 3: De Panne - De Panne
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_3.jpg
How much easier can it get? Mass sprint.

Stage 4: Koksijde - De Panne
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_4.jpg
Might turn the overall upside down. Will be interesting to watch.

Skil squad:
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_team.jpg
Veelers for the overall, backed up by free roled De Backer and Docker plus Curvers. Kittel for the eventual mass sprints and De Kort, Van Zandbeek and Chaigneau as domestiques.

Favourites:
*** Fabian Cancellara
** Thor Hushovd, Geraint Thomas
* Lars Boom, Johan Vansummeren, Sébastien Rosseler

Cobbles + timetrial = perfect race for Cancellara. The only thing that could have made it better for him would have been a harder cobbled stage. I'd be surprised if he doesn't prevail here.
After his impressive 3rd place in Gent-Wevelgem, Hushovd will be very dangerous again. No one was able to follow his attacks in GW, maybe the same here?
Good cobbler, good sprinter, great timetriallist. Thomas will do well here, as long as his shape is ok. A dark horse.

And I thought Catalunya was bugged in PCM10, where just the timetrial was selective. Wink
I guess the race was simulated? I think in 3D mode Catalunya should work much better with PCM11.

Either way. Good luck in the next races.

Pellizotti2
@roturn: Yes, of course it was simulated. Wink I also think it'd worked out better in 3D, but the race doesn't really fit our squad.

Stage 1: Middelkerke - Oudenaarde
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_1.jpg
Stage one is also the hardest one in this race. Lots of cobbled sections and vicious steep climbs. This will be a nightmare for the riders if the pace is high early on. The flat run-in towards the finish will favour the faster guys, so maybe a day for Hushovd?

Three favourites:

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_1_1.jpg
The 160 riders rolling off the start line in Middelkerke earlier today.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_1_2.jpg
The early kilometers saw some really strong names escaping and surprisingly being allowed to do so by all the teams. A really strong group containing Björn Leukemans (Vacansoleil) (78 COB!), Bert De Waele (Landbouwkrediet) (74), Pieter Vanspeybrouck (Topsport) (70) and Nico Eeckhout (An Post) (65). Very, very surprising that they were allowed to go, especially considering Leukemans in the group.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_1_3.jpg
The four man escape later became a six man group, as former Paris-Roubaix winner Fréderic Guesdon (FDJ) (75 COB) and Wilfried Cretskens (Donckers) (73) joined them. Two more 70+ cobblers in the group. Nice.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_1_4.jpg
Leukemans and De Waele seemed to be the strongest in the group, since they were always on top at both the intermediate sprints and the KoM sprints. Not very surprising though.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_1_5.jpg
If it was unclear before, they proved it later by dropping their companions up one of the steep, cobbled climbs. Still a big lead for them too!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_1_6.jpg
Some teams starting realising it not far later. Especially Leopard and Garmin were pushing incredibly hard at the front, slowly reducing the gap.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_1_7.jpg
It took a long time, but on the final cobbled section Cancellara made his move. Nobody seemed to have the energy to respond.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_1_8.jpg
It took Cancellara about half a cobbled section to close the last 1'30 gap to Leukemans and De Waele. He immediately tried to jump past them, but Leukemans seemed to still have some power left in his legs.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_1_9.jpg
Cancellara wasn't able to get rid of the two early escapees so he slowed down, allowing some more riders to come back with just a few km's to go. The group now included: Fabian Cancellara, Björn Leukemans, Bert De Waele, Niki Terpstra, Lars Boom, Matti Breschel, Sylvain Chavanel, Thor Hushovd and Geraint Thomas.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_1_10.jpg
We missed the first group, but an amazing solo effort from De Backer saw him rejoining the front group just before the final sprint. Veelers had a bad day and were dropped early, while Docker were sitting in a second group, not far behind the leaders.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_1_11.jpg
In the sprint Hushovd proved to be unbeatable and the God of Thunder could celebrate a dominant win ahead of Thomas and Cancellara. De Backer had no energy left to sprint and finished 12th. Good news was that Docker's group managed to catch the back of the leading group in the end and was given the same time.

Stage 2: Zottegem - Sint Idesbald

After the very hard opening stage, we now have an easy flat day, expected to end in a mass sprint. The final kilometer is slightly uphill, so it might be an interesting sprint. Hushovd for a double?

Three favourites:

The race:

A group of 4 made the days Botd. Ronan Van Zandbeek in there together with Christian Poos (Differdange), Tomasz Kiendys (CCC Polsat) and Derk Abel Beckeringh (Rabo Conti). Most teams seemed to like this breakaway, since they were given a huge lead.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_2_2.jpg
Entering the last three kilometers, VZ found himself in the worst possible postion, at the front. Beckeringh, Poos and Kiendys were all following him.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_2_3.jpg
Poos tried to jump past VZ under the Flamme Rouge and did come up alongside his rival. Kiendys followed Poos, while Beckeringh was tailed off as the sprint began.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_2_4.jpg
Kiendys timed his sprint to perfection and managed to jump around Poos at a perfect time to celebrate a fine win. VZ did't have his best legs today and couldn't respond in the final. Still a nice 3rd place for him.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/kbc_2_5.jpg
Hushovd dominantly won the sprint for 5th place a little while later in a fight against Breschel and Thomas. We didn't care about the sprint, since the win was out of reach.

News:

We've successfully managed to complete the signings of two young riders. They've been doing great in the U23 class, so we decided to sign them as fast as possible. It turned out to be two good choices, since they both look really talented.

Wampach has been dominating the U23 class so far this season. He leads the world ranking and has won a few stages already. 20 years old with 73 hill - that's talent. If we're lucky he might develop into a great puncheur in the future. We hope that he'll do well in the team and develop into the rider his potential tells us he is. Ardennes Triple next?

The second young man we've signed is this guy, Evan Bonnet. He's also been doing really well in the U23 class and he also turned out to be a super-talent. His stats speaks for itself, he can become a new top sprinter if his potential says so. Possibly even a bigger talent than Wampach, since most of his secondary stats are quite high too.
