His strengths and weaknesses are very much like Hagen's.

And just like Hagen, he has lunatic fans who guarantee he can be a GT GC rider some day

Phinney has no shot of being a GT rider. Talansky, Peterson, and Stetina are the three young Americans with a shot of being good GT riders some day.

Stetina won the Bikesteamboat Stage Race just 2 days ago. Pfft in front of horribly strong competition as Chris Baldwin (2nd) and Marc de Maar (3rd)

Peterson and Talanksy look like the best bets for the future. Stetina is a good tter in addition to a decent climber, but doesn't look like he has the upside they thought he did two or three years ago.

Meanwhile, Alex Howes and Blake Caldwell can climb amazingly, but neither of them can TT.

Van Garderen might have a chance in GTs with long ITTs, he has a nice chance to develop into sort of a rider like Leipheimer or Rogers.

Edit: Well, in my HTC career he's the new Leipheimer Grin

If offense is the best defence, does it mean that defence is the worst defence?

Nah, TJ is a strong TTer and will do fine in the medium hills, but he'll never have the ability in the high mountains to compete.

Can he win smaller stage races? Certainly, and I expect him to (I think he'll be the best American rider in a year or two from now). But he doesn't have the GT upside that Talansky or Peterson have.

I dunno, Van Garderen was 3th in the Dauphine, although the mountain field except for Contador/Vandenbroeck/Brajkovic wasn't good there

So, look at that race. Vogondy took 6th, while Sanchez was 18th and Menchov 22nd. I think that shows everyone wasn't really on top form.

EDIT: and if you are wondering why I'm so big on Talansky, it isn't just because of his results. Check out his blog here https://andrewtalansky.blogspot.com/ Some of the best cycling reading out there.

I know Talansky is good. I expect him to be up there in a few years if he keeps this up.

Timmeh
I think Van Garderen might be someone lile LL Sanchez, good enough to win Paris-Nice, but no GT's...

Noone said anything about TVG winning GTs Smile

Whoever wrote the names of the riders should be shot Pfft
"Jezus" and "Oliviera"...

Notice that Degenkolb wasn't content with asserting his sprint superiority.
He attacked and dropped the field with Herrada and Oliveira

Avenir ends with a 13.5km TT tomorrow. Would be nice to see a Colombian win it. I hope we get a few new Boteros or Solers on the European scene soon! Smile

Is Dimitry Mikhail's brother?
