Today is the opening stage of the 96th Tour de France. It is a 15 kilometer hilly time trial that doesn’t quite suit the time trial specialists. I was full of emotions today. It’s the first stage and you can’t help but feel so many mixed emotions. It’s been my dream to race in the Tour de France and I’m already racing in it at the age of 22. So when I got on the start ramp, I was nervous and excited. I wasn’t going to win the stage but I wanted to be in good position for the TTT in 3 days. I set a good time, coming in 48th, 48 seconds behind the leader.

One of the surprises of the day was the disappointing performance of Fabian Cancellara. He finished in 20th place, 24 seconds behind the leader.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%201/Cancellara.jpg

Markus Fothen set a great time, coming in 11th place. He is pretty good in the mountains so he may surprise a lot of people.

The winner of the stage was the Australian TT champion, Cadel Evans, who continues to show his dominance after a win in the Dauphine Libere.

Both Vandevelde and Zabriskie set great times coming in 8th and 9th place. Wiggins however was a huge disappointment. He had a mechanical malfunction and came in last place. (In reality as I was setting his speed, I guess it stuck and went up to a 94. By the time I realized it, it was too late. Sorry guys.)

Stage 2

Today’s stage is supposed to be flat, but the profile shows that it has a lot of little climbs throughout the stage. Right from the start Trent Lowe attacked, looking for the King of the Mountain points. Lowe took 10 KOM points at the first climb but only 1 at the next two. He still had 11 points and will now hold the King of the Mountain Jersey in stage 3. After the climbs, the breakaway riders worked together and built a 3 minute gap.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%202/Thebreakaway.jpg

With Farrar and Sutton off the back, we were left with no sprinters and in the final sprint, Hushovd beat Boonen for the stage.

Stage 3

Today’s stage starts out pretty hilly but the 2nd half of the stage is completely flat and should set up a fight by the sprinters. Lowe, who was wearing the King of the Mountain jersey, got in the break looking to hold on to the jersey.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%203/Loweinpolkadotinbreak.jpg

He was able to hold on to the jersey for another day but they break was caught with 30 kilometers left. The sprinters set up, but upfront a couple riders fell. One of them was Hesjedal and he hit the ground hard.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%203/Hesjedalcrashes.jpg

With nowhere to go I fell also, falling off my bike and being run over by other riders too.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%203/Icrasch.jpg

Almost half of the peloton crashed including a lot of the leaders, including Evans, Leipheimer, and Schleck.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%203/Everyonecrashes.jpg

Somehow, Vandevelde managed to stay on his bike and finish with the peloton. At the sprint finish, a lot of the sprinters were behind because of the crash including Farrar. At the line Haussler won the stage.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%203/Hausslerwins.jpg

Both Andy Schleck and Levi Leipheimer abandoned and a lot of riders lost a lot of time.

yeah. I will look at the silver lining and say that now I know I have to work for Vandevelde and now it's more likely I can get a stage win.

Stage 4
Today was a long Team Time Trial and a chance for us to take the yellow jersey. The team that came in 5th despite having Cadel Evans and Thomas Dekker was Silence Lotto. They finished 1'10 back of the winner.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%204/SilenceLotto.jpg

In 4th place, led by Markus Fothen, Team Milram finshed in 4th, 1'07 back of the leader.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%204/TeamMilram.jpg

Rabobank finished in 3rd place thanks to the time trialing ability of Denis Menchov. They managed to finish only 52 seconds back.

In 2nd place Caisse d'Epargne put up a great time finishing only 30 seconds behind the winner. Columbian TT champion Uran and the leader of the Pro Tour Valverde led the team across the line.

We managed to put up a great time, coming in 1st place led by great time trailers such as, Wiggins, Zabriskie, Millar, Vandevelde, and some other descent time trailers. We now hold the Yellow, White, and Polka Dot jersey.

there big TTers have been in breaks and I think they were a little tired. Plus the crash shook some riders up.
