Yes, the first came on Andalucia Stage 5 last year. Details here.
As far as other races are concerned, I'm sticking to Spain for February with Murcia and Andalucia. I wanted to stick to my strengths for the start of my World Tour journey. Following that I'll be in Paris-Nice and one of Catalunya or Pais Vasco. I will also start in atleast two of the three races in the Ardennes week, with LBL a surety for now. Beyond that, the plans are still being made.

Still in Spain for two races in February. Murcia and the six stage Andalucia up ahead. If last year is anything to go by, this should be another good month for me. Did I continue my good start for Lotto? Let's find out...
I was picked for a free role by the team and yet the bookies put me among the favourites for a race win. I couldn't help but beam at the progress I've made in three years being a pro. This isn't so difficult, is it now 
The race saw Jelle Wallays join the breakaway for us as I stayed in the pack looking for opportunities later. The break was caught before the last climb of the race. At that stage, there were around 50 riders left at the front. I was around the middle of the pack when the climb started, a bad position to be in. I tried to go up through the sides as I heard news about riders starting to attack from the front. I was of no use as I kept getting bunched in. A group of 5 leapt away from the bunch and contested the sprint for the win. Ruben Fernandez took the win, edging out Sebastien Henao and Eddie Dunbar. I had to be content with 21st.

Well, it isn't that easy either!
I was riding the race which saw me win my first ever stage last year. Once again, I would be riding the same stage on my birthday. This was a good opportunity to put the slight disappointment of Murcia behind me. I was once again picked in a free role and that suited me perfectly.
Stage 1 was a short time trial and was being touted as among the favourites for the win again. It started off well enough. When I finished, I was 6th, 19 seconds off the best time. I finished up 22nd, 28 seconds off. Not the best day, but not a lot of time lost.
Stage 2 had an uphill finish and I was targeting that from the time I saw the race route for the first time. The plan was to be safe throughout the stage and I did that. The next part of the plan was to attack at the start of the short uphill to the finish. That didn't exactly work out with Pinot outgunning everyone to the line, with a time gap. I was in the second group at the finish, picking up a decent 5th place. The real good was that I was up into 2nd place in the GC! Pinot was ahead by just less than a minute.

Stage 3 saw me start with the white jersey over my shoulders. I was again one of the favourites. Van Gestel joined the break for us. But that's about all that went our way here. I struggled at the end to keep pace with the final attacks losing more than a minute to stage winner Eduard Beltran, and slipping down to 9th in the GC.
Stage 4 was a flat stage and there was nothing much I could do to improve my situation in the GC. I finished in the bunch and saw Cimolai grab a top 10 for us. Fabien Schmidt picked up the win.
Stage 5 on my birthday again. I was determined to have a repeat of last year. There was a scary moment as a 22 rider crash slowed down the peloton near the halfway mark. Me along with three teammates were involved in the crash. Luckily, all of us recovered from it, but it more or less put paid to my strength of being able to get away at the end. The stage came down to a reduced bunch sprint of around 30 riders. Nacer Bouhanni won the sprint with Cimolai taking 2nd place for us. I finished 11th.
Stage 6 was not one where time gains could be made. There was good news for our team though as Cimolai picked up the stage win! Eduard Beltran suffered a crash in the closing kilometres, losing more than four minutes and I moved up one place in the GC.

A better GC position and the U25 jersey but no repeat of last year's stage win. Instead, an overall much better team showing, unsurprising since I am in a better team. A good race for teammate Cimolai too. February wasn't spectacular in terms of personal performances, but I think I've made progress. Till next time...

Yes quite happy with the improvement in the final standings. Can't win a stage here every year.

The third month of the year is upon us and time sure is flying! This month, I'm in France for both races. Firstly, I go to Paris-Nice for my first taste of a World Tour race after joining Lotto. This will be my first start in this race too. Following this, I will start the three day mixed race of Criterium International at the end of the month.
A first start at this famous race for me. Most of the big names, i.e. GT contenders, were incidentally absent from this race this year. Froome was present, but his decline has already begun. Besides him, the likes of Kelderman, Kwiatkowski, Dumoulin, Barguil And Betancur were favoured to challenge for the win. I didn't have a lot of hopes for a top GC placing, again looking out for the stage win.
Stage 1 was a short ITT. I crossed the line 28 seconds on the then leader but eventually finished up 48 seconds behind stage winner Dumoulin.
Stage 2 and a surprise awaited me. By virtue of being place the highest amongst my teammates, I was given leadership duties for this race. This was a moment to remember. However, this meant that my stage hunting dreams were put on the back-burner for the moment.
This stage was one for the sprinters and rising star Gaviria picked up the win.
Stage 3 was pretty much a carbon copy of the previous one. Only this time, Carlos Barbero edged out Gaviria in the bunch sprint.
Stage 4 was the first of the hilly stages. Lotto put van Hoecke into the break and I could just concentrate on the end of the stage. While the hills did not effectively break up the peloton the upward finish did allo some punchers to get into the mix. Bonifazio did take the win for the sprinters but I managed to get 9th on this stage. We had four riders finishing inside the top 15.
Stage 5 was the first where time gaps popped up. Boonen, and later van Hoecke, were a part of the breakaway for us. I managed to stay with the group of leaders throughout the race as more and more riders kept getting dropped. The break was caught and it came down to a bunch sprint of a select group of riders. I finished 9th again and pushed myself up to 10th in the GC! I also took the lead of the U25 competition
Stage 6 was a change from the normal as the early breakaway managed to stay away and win by more than four minutes. However, one of them managed to trouble the top of the GC, having lost too much time in previous stages.

Stage 7 saw the break being caught early, before the last climb. At this stage, with 30 km to go, and 4 km from the summit of the last climb, I made my move to escape from the leading group. I was ahead for a while but was caught before the summit and fell back to the third group on the road. A group of four riders, Sagan, Alaphilippe, Kwiatkowski and Kelderman, put a gap to the rest and fought it out for the win, finishing in the order mentioned. I finished 12th, losing almost three minutes to the leading group and also lost a place in the GC. My teammates struggled horribly on this stage.
Stage 8 and the race ended like it started, with an ITT. Having started off towards the end, I finished 37 secinds off the pace when I crossed the line. That's where I ended up too with none of the higher place GC riders being able to beat Geraint Thomas's time. I stayed put at 11th in the GC. I did hold on to my White Jersey too.

The second race of March took me to the Criterium International. Although not a WT race, this was my first start here. I was selected as the GC leader for our team. Even so, I was surprised to find myself listed among the favourites for the GC. To be fair, the big names were all surprisingly missing. I strapped myself in for what could be a breakthrough race.
Stage 1 was flat and meant specifically for the sprinters. I minded my own business and stayed out of trouble on this stage. The bunch sprint at the finish saw three of our guys finish in the top 10, van Staeyen was the best with 5th.
Stage 2 featured the important but not utimately decisive ITT. I was being considered as among the favourites for this stage too! I did well enough, finishing in 9th place, 41 seconds off stage winner Adriano Malori's time. This also meant I had taken up 9th place in the GC.
Stage 3 had the big climb a couple of kilometres from the finish that would decide the fate of this race. With no major time gaps made in the IT, it would be difficult for the pure TTists to keep hold of their positions after this stage. I was again a favourite for the stage win. Our team worked very hard and were able to bring down the size of the lead group considerably while chasing the breakaway. The latter were caught before the peloton reached the business end. A very select group of 6 riders, with me in it, reached the 10 km to go mark together. A couple of kilometres later, two of them, Chevrier and le Lavandier, went away from the others and were never caught. I made my move for escape from the bunch with 5 km left. I managed to distance the other three but could not make up ground on the two early attackers. Chevrier won from le Lavandier with me coming 3rd on the stage. This is also how it finished at the top of the GC.

Another brilliant individual performance but my teammates struggled again. Stage 3 was a giant and a giant-killer of a stage which saw huge time-gaps and nullified the ITT completely. 3rd in the GC is an excellent outcome. Winning the white jersey again shows how good I am performing now at this level. Top 5s in both other individual classifications as well an outcome of two high finishes. I'm still having the time of my life so far riding for Lotto
