I think Quintana's time trial ability is slightly overrated.
This was more about climbing than time-trialling; Nairo lost far more time on Henao and Purito on the climbs than on the flatter part of the course, although I partially agree in that overall this year his TT has been a little underwhelming, not sure it merits 'overrated' though.

Cant be happier for Izaguirre! Damn he was good today. All in all, im fine with the results although Quintana didnt perform as expected. But thats fine when you get 3rd and 4th. And big congrats to 'Rito, probably first and last time he will win a race on the final ITT
As always a super race to watch with some nice surprises thrown into the mix. Whatever got to Quintana got him good and it was obvious he wasnt the dominator form T-A which is fine to me. Long season ahead and bigger races to come! |

My guess would be he simply hasnt worked on it as it essentially doesn't matter come July if you lose 15 or 30 seconds on Froome on the first day. But I would still say its a little too early since the time trials in T-A were flat and short and today doesnt really say that much about time trialing |

Sad for Yates, that he wasn't able to keep the podium. He deserved that I think, but OK. The others on the podium did aswell...
Henao will be pretty damn good, once he really hits his level.

Thing with Henao his base form is incredibly solid, he can perform in every race no matter if it's his first or last race, obviously he'll improve but wouldn't expect him to do so drastically.
Fleche and LBL awaits, he has a chance to win one of them for sure.

well it was not quite normal TT..It was more like climbing fest.
Taaramäe 9th. sad that puncture at stage 4 spoiled he's tour. But man is happy and even I starting slowly to believe that he is back. |

The fact that Tom Duomulin won would contradict your first point though |

Roadriquez 2 nd. at TT that is my point..
Tony Martin 11th..hm that makes Rodriquez better TT rider compared to Tony? |

Yeah, Strange one Quintana came 7th yet Rodriguez got 2nd and Martin 11th and Domoulin 1st.
I understand what you mean and I agree it wasn't a normal TT but a TT rider won.
I guess riders just had off days. |

Except for the fact that Tom Dumoulin is a pretty good climber, and is targeting the ardennes this season... His only target this race was the final TT, and to get into top shape... I wouldn't be surprised to see Dumoulin doing top 10s in the ardennes-week.
Also Quintana is no way near the level of Ion Izagirre on a regular TT. Izagirre-brothers are pretty damn good TT'ers. This is the TT results he have had for the past year:
3, 8, 12, 13, 7, 22, 2, 8, 9, 5, 7... If anyone is surprised by his TT capabilities it must be because they are living under a rock.
Just for the fun of it, let's take a look at Quintana:
7, 55, 12, 82, 2, 1, 13, 20, 16... He has better results (on the mountain TT's), besides that he is constantly slightly worse than Izagirre...

It was obviously just a mix. Too tough for Tony but not for Tom. Mainly hills specialists instead of pure TTists, but lets not forget Dumoulin is not a bad climber at all.
Actually curious how his Ardennes will go.

Tony Martin said before the stage, that he didn't feel for the route, so he would only benchmark the stage for Kwiatek. He could probably have fared better, but he wouldn't have won the stage imo... The reason why Tom Dumoulin won is, as you say, that he isn't a bad climber at all...
This article/preview says a lot about the stage, and the pre-stage favorites:

Would've thought riders like Kiatkowski and Van Garderen do better today - they never seem to perform when the conditions are right for them - climbing TTs. |

Dumoulin is a damn big talent. He has the same slim figure as Wiggins when he won the Tour and I am interesting in seeing him eventually wanting more than just week long stage races and ardennes - think he has the potential to more, especially if he is presented with a Tour 2012-alike route a few year down the road.
And yes, generally Izaguirre is a better time trialist than Quintana on flatter courses, although he likes them hilly as well, but nobody can claim they thought Izaguirre would beat Quintana that much today since he won a similar TT 2 years ago. Probably a mix between Q not feeling too well and Ion beasting this race. The strategy should be the same in Romandie, Quintana the captain and Ion still being able to make a good result himself as those kinda races are his forté |

Really happy to see Ion doing so well. Especially here.
The support from the fans probably had some effect as well - at least they were very loud when he approached the line. Much louder than for anyone else.

Ion has by now turned into an ace for week-long stage races for quite some years now. Hoping he'll win one soon. Maybe Tour of Pologne this year since that's sorta the race that seems to suit him best.
"Team-wise, we leave with that bittersweet taste, but looking at myself, I think I took a step forward in my career. Making it onto the podium in my home race, with such a strong field of contenders, makes me mentally stronger to keep doing my work. You become more mature after all this years in the pro peloton, and that pays off when you race important courses - I feel more solid, and having a team like this by your side makes things even easier. Now it's time to enjoy this result and then, we will start thinking about the Giro. I'm raring to go after this race - let's see what we can achieve in Italy."
