"No way"? Of course Quintana is top-gun & main-favourite but anybody has to wait for mountains to know more and a lot can happen in 3 weeks. Valv finished 2nd & 3rd in two previous editions, both times after racing le Tour. He currently leads UCI World Tour Rankings and achieved his best Tour result this year. If there is no way for a guy like Valverde to lead at Vuelta, than there's no way for anyone in this world.
I think the only reason he got the number 1 was because he is spanish and Movistar want to be nice |

Yeah, Quintana was 2nd in his first Tour participation and won the 3rd GT he ever entered.
Valverde still hasn't reached a Tour podium even when all odds where in his favour.
Valverde is done imho, as GT leader that is (still won clasica san sebastian and fw and is a fantastic classics/1 week racer).. Unzue would be stupid to favour him above Quintana in a 3 week test |

Maybe. Either that, or because he's one of the best riders in the world and finished podium in last two years. Your guess is as good as mine.
@ruben: Like I said, Quintana is top-gun for Movistar, no arguing here, but Valverde is by far his best self in Vuelta and lots can happen in three weeks, even if your name is Quintana. Shared captaincy is hardly something new in cycling, and fortunately there are more important numbers in cycling than the startnumber.

No way Movistar will allow Valverde or any other members of Movistar to treat Quintana badly. Quintana is like priced possession. Moment he decides to leave this team, he will get many others. And Valverde is ageing and Quintana is their best future bet. Even if there is some problem management will solve it. And like I TdF 2013 Valverde will ride for Quintana if he finds that he doesn't have it anymore.
There is nothing that Movistar can gain by treating Quintana badly. They can only lose. |

It is a joke Valverde has got the #1 number. Quintana is way better than Valverde, Valverde couldn't even finish on the podium in the Tour de France without Froome and Contador. Bad move by Movistar if Quintana doesn't have the fully support from the team from the start.

The organisers decide the numbers though don't they? If so they're just going to give the #1 to Valverde because he's Spanish and he's a co-leader, that's all. If this was in Colombia Quintana would get the #1. Doesn't show anything about Movistar internal politics

Funny how people in here, journalists and commentators try to blow this Valverde/Quintana out of proportation. Let me say this again: Valverde has nothing but respect for Quintana and is more than willing to help him (he has kinda 'mentored' Quintana in his first couple of years). However, there is no doubt that Valverde still will attempt to finish high in the GC as well, partly because of the opportunities it could give through the race and his pride as a bike racer. When the road rises, all the answers will be given.
And its also funny how this somehoe equals that Valverde as a bike rider is over the hill or whatever, just because he happens to be on the same team as a rider who possibly will go down in history as one of the best GC-riders ever. Lets not forget that Valverde leads the World Tour and whenever Valverde attends a race, you can be god damn sure he will be up there as he as of now is the most consistent rider on the planet. Nough said. |

Does someone know whether there's any bonification time on offer? Can't seem to find the rules for that anywhere?

3, 2, 1 in intermediate sprints and 10, 6, 4 at the finish line iirc.

Considering exactly that Degenkolb was clearly the fastest, nope.

The german commentators said something like :"very hard sprint for bouhanni, he can even win sprints with a bad leadout..."
i think the leadout was the only good part at his sprint...Degenkolb was much faster!

Betancur -surprisingly- loses over a minute. Pinot also over a minute back
