EPIC - Giro d'Italia 2013

Gimme a break, I'm a year 8 student for 10 weeks Pfft But if you want me to write an essay on globalisation you'd see I know more than that rather inaccurate statement.

Anyway, I agree with what you say. In my opinion, if something is to be changed, do it in the off-season, but we need to see how things go as well.

Giro d’Italia 2013: Week 2

Stage 8
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/s8_zps71404a35.jpg

Welcome to the second week, which opens up with stage 8, a Time Trial of nearly 55 kilometers on at times bumpy and hilly road from Gabicce Mare to Saltara. Intermediates will be taken in Panoramica Adriatica, a viewpoint to the Adriatic Sea, and Fano. This race will be all about conserving your energy, while also taking the early hills with a steady performance.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/s8_f_zps35685862.jpg

Race favourites includes one name by a far margin: Fabian Cancellara (RTL). The Swiss has bounced back at the Tour de Romandie after a disappointing flanders campaign and looks to get a much desired stage win for Radioshack here today. Although the multiple TT World Champion has the form to dominate today, the road and especially the finish up to Saltara, may cause some problems. Don’t count out therefor the Overall contenders such as Nibali (AST), Kelderman (BEL) or Porte (SKY).

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2017_52_50-Greenshot_zps77bcc147.jpg

One of the first riders on the road is Greek Champion Ioannis Tamouridis. It hasn’t a great Giro for them so far, but maybe a decent result here today can lift their morale for future breakaway attempts? He and his teammate Cristiano de los Campos at least show their will by taking 1-2 at the first intermediate and occupy it for some time.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2017_56_56-Greenshot_zpsd666eb49.jpg

Another Euskaltel rider, J.J. Oroz, gets passed by Alex Dowsett (MOV), who puts in a solid performance and destroying all intermediate best times on the way to the finish. His lead onto Ignatiev (KAT) at the finish is thereby impressive: A whole minute.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_01_45-Greenshot_zps86eacfc2.jpg

With Dubridge (OGE), Bauer (GRS) and Pennarossa (CAN) there are quite some Time Trial specialists on the road by now, and they all place themselves around the time of Downsett at the intermediate. San Marinese(?) Pennarossa set the best intermediate at the Adriatic Panorama by a second, and his lead onto second-placed Bauer is 18 seconds at the second one. Finally a stellar performance from one of the Cannondale guys. Only took them a week.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_06_04-Greenshot_zpsbf849970.jpg

While Uran may still feel his injuries and disappoints at the hilly part of the TT, it’s a great day there for Majka (TST) and he shows what he’s capable of by getting the first intermediate for now. Oh, what could have been for the young polish rider if only…

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_07_16-Greenshot_zpsa9f6e21e.jpg

Pennarossa at the finish line, almost catching two guys ahead of him (Devolder, Pirazzi). No doubt he sets the current best time, and with Majka passing him by one second on the second intermediate one has to wonder: What’s more important in this time trial: How you deal with the hills in the beginning and the end or how well you cope against the clock in general? Eventually, all of those contenders bite out their teeth at Pennarossa’s time for now as they all lose too much time in the flat part leading to Saltara.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_12_42-Greenshot_zpsf7d57eee.jpg

Still early on in the race, but Quintana had a good day yesterday and he’s sure to want to build up on that further. But before he can play catch-up in the mountains, it’s important to keep the time loss decently onto the GT contenders. With 10 seconds behind Majka so far, he’s certainly doing well so far.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_14_19-Greenshot_zps6fe8b90e.jpg

Camera can’t get enough of Quintana and if you’re wondering who’s that guy up ahead of him? That’s Cavendish. Surely, he prefers to save his energy for stages more suited to his strengths. But Quintana’s time trial looks promising so far.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_15_22-Greenshot_zps86cffb9e.jpg

Lieuwe Westra (VCD) is the first rider to really put down his feet at the intermediate. With 25 seconds onto Majka and Geschke, he has a decent lead onto Pennarossa, who isn’t even in the Top 10 anymore at the first intermediate. But all those hilly specialists, they all lose time eventually. Except for Simon Geschke, who beat Pennarossa by 9 seconds in the finish!

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_17_46-Greenshot_zps51f44ef4.jpg

Cadel sets out for his ride. Many favourites are already on the road such as Basso and Quintana, and with Evans departure, it’s sure that the big guns roll out now.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_30_26-Greenshot_zps58e0602d.jpg

An almost perfect ride from Dutch Champion Westra sees him take first in Saltara by the margin of over a minute! This time will stand for a while now. But when he reached the finish line, he also got word from the Adriatic Panorama: Fabian Cancellara just beat his time on the first intermediate.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_34_32-Greenshot_zpsaa8cb0ba.jpg

Now that most of the contenders are on the road, we see what all those performances are worth, and so far Spartacus (RTL) has realy shredded through the opposition. Kelderman comes closest to him with 9 second gap at the first intermediate.

After Betancur, who’s missing those famous pink wings of previous days and is already 40 seconds behind, crossed Panoramica Adriatica, we take a look at the current standings.
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/s8_t1_zps76eb0e00.jpg

Cancellara is already leading after the first hilly stepping stones. The rest of the route suits him even better. Kreuziger profited certainly from his rather anonynmous riding in the peloton so far and threw lots of that saved energy into the race today. Kelderman proves once more to be a great Time Trialists, while Westra’s time still holds up against the likes of Porte, Nibali and Evans.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_40_09-Greenshot_zps4b25bfa9.jpg

No, this one is not photoshopped. Yes, it is real. Cancellara just passes two riders at once! The poor unfortunate ones are Pozzovivo (17th GC) and Gadret (18th). Do you guys think that Spartacus will also manage to get the third AG2R La Mondialem, Riblon (19th) rider up ahead? The french is 2.5 kilometers up ahead, but hey – piece of cake. Of course, Cancellara sets the new best time in Fano too, while Kelderman lost time onto Westra.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_43_36-Greenshot_zpsd9d1a6bc.jpg

A beautiful National Champion jersey Cataldo gets to wear. And his time so far proves that he is worthy of it. He holds 4th at Fano currently.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_44_46-Greenshot_zps37d65962.jpg

While Cancellara may be great at passing other riders, his teammates aren’t. Kiserlovski too gets soon caught by Kreuziger, who’s showing some massive form today and holds narrowly onto Kelderman.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_45_58-Greenshot_zps85fa8c83.jpg

It didn’t quite work out for Cancellara with getting the last AG2R La Mondiale but hey – he surely won’t mind as he sets a breath taking time of 1h21m49’’. Almost a minute faster than Westra!

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_47_10-Greenshot_zpsf5b30c71.jpg

Young dutch and teenie-magnet Kelderman justifies the hype with a great performance. There’s no beating Cancellara, but he may just get the drop on his countryman Westra still. So or so, Kelderman puts himself into a great position today.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_48_29-Greenshot_zps4e07685c.jpg

It’s not the best of days for Nibali, as he is only slighty faster than Evans at the second intermediate. 56 seconds down on Cancellara. Nibali certainly would have hoped for more today.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/s8_t2_zps125dc982.jpg

And when Betancur crosses Fano, 1’27’’ down on Cancellara, we have an all-too convincing stage set up for Cancellara win today. However, the fight for positons and seconds is evidently hard. Kelderman, Kreuziger, Porte and Cataldo all did a great show so far and will look to get additional time into Nibali, Evans, Betancur and all those other rivals. From Fano to Saltara it’s still 16 kilometers, so there’s lots of ground to be covered.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_51_29-Greenshot_zpsa9a77a57.jpg

Third place Ryder Hesjedal is doing a solid show so far, although always being narrowly outside of the Top 10 at the intermediate. He currently has a gap of 1’14’’ on Cancellara. It’s likely to get worse but his goal should be to defend the third place today.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_53_02-Greenshot_zps18a7b535.jpg

Ever active Simon Gerrans has lots of great time trialists in his team, but unfortunately he isn’t one of them. He loses 3’25 on Cancellara, over 2 minutes though on real human beings of which Kelderman is the first.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_54_41-Greenshot_zpsf988446e.jpg

Maybe the surprise of the day? Roman Kreuziger’s performance determines and justifies his GC ambitions by coming in 4th, 1’05 to Cancellara, 15 seconds onto Kelderman. This should really satisfy Saxo manager after some quiet days for the team, where only Bennati truly showed great performances.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2018_57_05-Greenshot_zps2b6e552b.jpg

It’s the last hill for Carlos Betancur. He wouldn’t like it. He is set to lose the Maglia Rosa today after collecting two stage wins. However, the Giro isn’t far from over and some may say that the fight for pink has only truly started today.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/s8_t3_zps4a43bc75.jpg

Finale time in Saltara. We can see that Cancellara’s time was out of this world, a staggering performance. It moves him up in the GC but he probably doesn’t care too much. Radioshack are now surely hot for that second stage win. Meanwhile, Kelderman, Westra and Porte are the only ones to have managed to stay within a minute. Kreuziger surprised me today, and Cataldo shows that he’s the better Time Trialist than Nibali? Evans completes the Top 10, the old man is tuning up his legs slowly but steady. Betancur loses the Maglia Rosa to Nibali.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2019_00_12-Greenshot_zps28e049eb.jpg

Excellent performance from Kelderman, I trained him just for this TT and it payed off. Best of all GC riders!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Fabian shreds the opposition on his way to a world beating time. Wink

One stage down for us, one more to make a great Giro. Definitely worth sending Fabian here after that display.

Some fine pictures in that great report there Shonak, I especially like the one where Dowsett passes the dejected Euskaltel guy.

Interesting to see the San Marinese doing well, in my game I added an NC for them! Pfft

Yeah, I have to agree, great report for a TT!

Gerro still in the Top 10, but Alba drops behind a bit - not too bad though.

Thanks everybody. TT reports are always a bit tricky but I think I managed. Nibali's weakness today is good for the overall fight I think.

Stage 9
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/s9_zps6e5e86a6.jpg

After yesterday’s time trial Nibali is back in pink and Astana have to work today. However, the Top 5 are close together. Almost a minute is all that’s between them. With stage 9 featuring some nice climbs on the 179 route expect attacks from GT contenders as much as from hopeful fighters. This may be the first stage where the breakaway really has a chance of slipping away and snatching the victory, while the stage may not be tough enough for the GT contenders to cause a true selection.

The toughest climbs of the day are featured early on (Passo Della Consuma, Vallombrosa), while the other ones are of lesser difficulty but we’ll be raced much harder ( Vetta Le Creci, Fiesole). From the last climb, the descent leads right into Firenze.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2023_37_31-Greenshot_zpsc8e7baca.jpg

The five aspirants for today’s stage are: Cummings (BMC), Geschke (ARG), Brambilla (OPQ), Hoogerland (VCD) and Gorka Izagirre (EUS). Two more riders (Casar, Sörensen) tried to make the jump but failed. With the good rhythm going on inside the break, they constantly time on the peloton and soon reach a lead of up to 7 minutes at the foot of Passo Della Consumna.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2023_46_50-Greenshot_zps8efc9585.jpg

Johnny Hoogerland (VCD) wins the first mountainsprint at top of the Passo. This puts him actually already into the Maglia Azzurra since there hasn’t been that many KoM sprints yet. Cummings, Izagirre, Geschke and Brambilla follow in that order.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2023_48_49-Greenshot_zps98321c1b.jpg

We know that when Movistar leads the peloton, it’s highly likely that Quintana will try something today. He’s almost 9 minutes in the GC but by gaining time now and then, he plans to get into GC contention. Either way if he succeeds or not, it’ll be interesting to watch.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2023_51_32-Greenshot_zps7bb79f40.jpg

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2023_52_20-Greenshot_zpsb8d447e1.jpg

Due to the chasing effort, the lead is slowly decreasing. That of course doesn’t stop the riders to contest in the second KoM sprint of the day. It goes to Geschke ahead of Izagirre and Brambilla. Only Cummings didn’t contest and he’s actually about 40 seconds down on his former companions. It isn’t too tough for him to get back though. In the peloton, there’s already a severe selection. Amongst others, Rigoberto Uran is dropped and he’s clear that the injury by now hinders his performance very much.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2023_57_59-Greenshot_zpsaee7d935.jpg

After the long-descent, it’s uphill again for the break and they have to hurry. It’s about 40 kilometers left and their lead has crumbled to 3 minutes. Behind in the peloton Astana and Movistar are joining forces and keep the pace high. With two more climbs up ahead, there’s plenty of chances for potential attacks in this finale.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2100_00_12-Greenshot_zps2b1629c6.jpg

The rain comes down as Hoogerland and Izagirre start another fight for the Maglia Azzura. Not so many points here on top of Vetta de Creci but still enough to make a honest day’s work. The KoM sprint is won by Hoogerland ahead of Izagirre. He now holds 20 points in total. In the downhill there’s an attack by Brambilla, but he quickly gets reeled in. No moves yet in the peloton.

The break holds the 3 minutes and with only 20 kilometers left, it looks like one of them will be the lucky winner today. Hoogerland, fully knowing this, attacks in the flat part between the two climbs, Brambilla wants to follow.+

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2100_05_02-Greenshot_zps3b1ad3d2.jpg

No tactical plays yet, but Simon Geschke is the rider who’s most eager to catch Hoogerland. After all, he’s certainly the man with the fastest legs in a sprint. The peloton reaches the foot of Fiesole yet and it’s unlikely that there’ll be an attack. Instead, Astana has even dropped the pace and the lead extends to 4 minutes. The break is safe by now.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2100_07_00-Greenshot_zpsabffec41.jpg

Hoogerland’s move didn’t bring the hoped for merits. Instead the group contests now together in the finale KoM sprint of the day. Or is this sprint by Gorka Izagirre an actual attack? He narrowly gets beaten at the line from Cummings, who just slips by him in the last meters. However that little effort cost Cummings maybe dearly as Izagirre launches past him and attacks in the downhill. All but Cummings react at first.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2100_08_47-Greenshot_zps56a6ef76.jpg

Quintana has placed its obligatory attack. Nobody is following here. Maybe he’s chance to get some time finally? 33 seconds so far.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2100_09_31-Greenshot_zps9b8ae98c.jpg

Simon Geschke, all wet and dirty, doesn’t want to wait for the sprint and attacks now instead of speculating. Just like with Quintana, nobody follows right now. The finish is merely 7 kilometers away and there have been runs that worked just perfectly like that.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2100_10_57-Greenshot_zpsf3baf778.jpg

Late reaction by Kelderman in the downhill, where Betancur and Scarponi attacked and were followed by Nibali and Hesjedal. The reaction of Kreuziger, Basso and Porte is too weak though to follow the five riders. It’s likely though that this can just end up as a waste of energy anyway. Great ride by Quintana, who’s still up front.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2100_14_09-Greenshot_zps612cbb25.jpg

But soon Nibali, Betancur and Hesjedal are close to catching with the young Colombian. 3.5 kilometers for him left. Scarponi couldn’t hold on to Group Nibali, while Kelderman is close to catching up to Scarponi. Porte, Kreuziger and Evans are in the peloton, where FDJ is leading the chasing effort.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2100_12_50-Greenshot_zpsd403deec.jpg

Geschke is clear and hears the cheering of the crowds as he heads into the last kilometer. His gap should be enough so he has time to enjoy his victory. Great performance by him and a deserved victory for the team, who has been really active in the first week. It’s obvious by now that Argos is so much more than a mere sprinter team.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2100_15_41-Greenshot_zpsdf121f98.jpg

And he can easily raise his arms to the air and enjoy his moment of glory. We hear screaming from the Directeur sportif out of his team car. In the rain, it isn't hard for the team to be happy right now as Geschke not just won a stage here but also thereby completed a sponsor goal. Bravo!

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2100_16_04-Greenshot_zpsfe83d9f0.jpg

A little bit later, Hoogerland wins the riders sprint, while Quintana arrives with some lead onto Group Nibali at the finish but gets awarded the same time. Movistar officials are...not happy about that. Hanzen wins the sprint for 10th in the peloton and thereby also caught Kelderman and Scarponi.
