The pinnacle of the Ardennes. Today is the day I deliver.
The break of the day was huge, including 16 men from 16 teams. We were one of the few to miss out.
In the peloton, the pacing was mostly done by us and Katusha. The gap went out to ten minutes at one point, but the minute the pack wanted to start reeling them in they did.
The first attack came from Peter Sagan with 30 km to go. However, an attack on the flat isn't very successful in the hills, and he was fairly easily brought back.
Next to go on the flat was Purito himself. Once again, what was he doing? Why would the odds on favorite attack on a flat portion with 20 km to go? We brought him back easily. What a waste of energy.
However, we knew the attacks would come, and so we drained as much as we could out of the remaining 40 men in the peloton.
The world champion wasted no time waiting to attack on the 3rd to last climb of the day. Sagan tried to follow, but was obviously tired from the grueling hills. They are obviously too much for him. Slagter continued to pace. Meanwhile, Hesjedal and I still relaxed. He told me he felt amazing today, and I mentioned we could ride for him, but he threw that idea away. "This is your chance," he said.
The 20 man or so pack lingered behind, as Costa chugged away. Could he make it? Could this be just the next attack to catch me out?
Ryder didn't think so. The second we hit the Cote de Saint-Nicolas, the penultimate climb, he tapped me and then went. All I could do was follow in his slipstream. Slowly but surely I started noticing a gap behind us as we shot past Costa.
Henao and Rodriguez were scrambling to catch us, while the group looked at each other behind.
With Ryder's huge stature, you couldn't even see me behind him. This really helped me to stay out of the wind, and I could recover from the huge effort. Only the final climb to go, and we had almost a minute!
Up the final climb and I gave every last bit I had. Only Costa could spoil it now. Once again I thought to give Ryder the win, but waved me off and just tried to stave off Costa. I could taste it with 500 meters to go!
And I am now a two time winner of Liege - Bastogne - Liege. Ryder came in right behind me in 2nd. We did the double!
22 seconds later, a defeated Rui Costa road across the line to round out the podium. His attack could either be a blessing or a curse. Perhaps he wouldn't have even been close if he hadn't already been up front on the Saint-Nicolas. Or perhaps he could have followed and won. We'll never know for sure.
Over a minute after the Garmin Express, Nibali led the tiny group of remaining favorites across the line, once again not making the final selection.
You never miss the trophies, the flowers, and the podium kisses!
J-Rod ended up 8th. very disappointing for him. I still don't understand why he would attack on the flat, or why Moreno wasn't in the race.
Gilbert didn't even make the final bunch. Even Slagter beat him. It's obvious now that his career is going downhill in a big way.
Results
Garmin also took the team classification thanks to a 1-2-15 finish!
Team Classification
Spoiler I forgot to take a pic but meh, we won it and what else matters!
Well that's it for the classics. My final race before the Giro is the Tour de Romandie. However, I want to rest up a little so I will likely be a domestique there for Ryder or Andrew. Then it's on to the start in Ireland! Boy, that preview will be HUGE for the Giro. See you then!

Wow, what a Garmin domination, Hesjedal's form was definitely deciding factor, although I'm surprised by a really peaceful favourites' ride.

@Mre Maybe my best race ever in PCM! Thanks so much!
@valv321 To be honest he was the better option. Ryder had 1 form and +5 with excellent rhythm and no tiredness. He was literally in the best form possible, and Dan's was declining. But like he said, it was Dan's chance and his goal. Ryder has later ambitions.
@Cossack Yeah Hesjedal was an absolute beast. And yes, compared to the other classics no one really want to attack. Except on the flats, apparently.
@Sutty Indeed it was. The team had a lot to celebrate for!
@Code It sure was. I was shocked too about how well the attack worked
Well maybe the Romandie preview will be up today. Maybe not. Kind of busy with organizing the 2009 DB but it will definitely be up tomorrow if not tonight at some point.

A couple of big mountain stages but no mountain top finishes. I'm just going to relax and work for Ryder on the mountain stages. The Giro is only a week away!
We are here for Ryder. We also have Steele here if any sprints happen. A good lineup ahead of the Giro. Everyone is trying to get days in (besides Ryder. He's doing the Tour this year).

My first real domestique duties this year, and ahead of the Giro I'd love to pay Ryder back with a win for LBL. See you there!

Just started following your story(Amstil gold race). Had to follow a story after comeback had quit. And this is a good story, because I most often read only one at a time.
How is D.Martin stats atm? And on what page is the transfers?

78 mountain, 79 hill. They haven't evolved since the beginning, which you can see his stats on the first page.
Transfers haven't happened yet. Still in the first season.

Tour de Romandie - Stage 1
Stage 1 is a 9km mountain time trial. Pretty flat early on with tougher slopes later on. I'll try to test my legs I suppose.
Ryder had a pretty good ride today. unfortunately his bib number forced him to go pretty early, but he ended up 9th, 44 seconds back.
Simon Spilak didn't care about his early start, setting a rocketing time to beat.
As the later riders set off, Van Garderen decided to have a o for the win. He led at the first checkpoint, but finished 2nd at the finish, 9 seconds off of Spilak's time.
I set out to ride my best today. I felt good but wasn't digging too deep.
But when i reached the first check point, I was in 5th. Sensing a top place, I gunned it up the final climb, slotting in 3rd. Unfortunately the next rider in was Nibali, who matched TVG's time and pushed me back to 4th.
But all was null and void when the Spider Bot himself took to the course. Even on the short parcour's he wrecked the competition, finishing 27 seconds in front of Spilak,w ho's day was ruined by the final rider to leave the gate.
