DAMN YOU RANGERS!!!!!
I don't understand why having a 38 year old guy on your team for the rest of the year and giving up 2 picks is better than having your captain on the team for the rest of the year and possibly beyond.
This is just stupid. I'm sure they could have worked something out.
I am so pissed. This is why i don't root for the Knicks anymore. I couldn't take the Melo trade. Errrrrrrr.
Everything was looking positive. they were getting closer and closer to a deal. And now Slather screwed it all over. Jesus Christ.
Well, there goes the captain. Which I guess means Nash or Richards will have that spot now. hopefully Girardi.
You done goofed Sather. Maybe other people understand this, but from a fan's POV, you done goofed.
Sure, Callahan was asking to much, but both sides were coming closer and he was giving up his demands.
Now we can build our team around Stepan like Code said and trade him away in a few years. But Kreider will be there to build the team around so we can trade him.
We'd be better off going after him as a free agent now, but that's stupid.
DAMN YOU RANGERS!!!!!!

I didn't think there was any way they could re-sign Callahan, it was clear that he would request a trade if negotiations for his $7+ million/year contract fell through before the deadline
And what a flurry of activity today...lots of goalies swapped here and there. For full list of trades click spoiler below
I want to see the Sabres somehow botch this a few years down the road just for comedic purpose.

His demands had gone down considerably. Apparently there was only a couple hundred thousands between them last night.
I'm 99% sure that they could ahve gotten something done between now and the end of the season.
But like I said, the whole "don't want to lose him for nothing" thing is stupid. they gave up draft picks and lost their captain in this trade.Better to keep him for at least the rest of the season, and if you end up losing him, then you have that cap room for someone else.

The main thing is that they've botched the contract situation to begin with. The whole purpose behind trading Callahan was yes, in part having to do with not losing him, but what I meant with building around Stepan is that their cap will be manageable. What St.Louis brings to the table is that hopefully he bridges the gap in terms of competitiveness between now and then. Otherwise I'd think you'd be pretty disappointed a couple years down the road.
That being said, I still think the Rangers overextended the situation a bit...Yzerman was in a pretty perplexing situation himself. A first and a second(honestly don't think they will reach the ECF) is a bit too much. I thought I read somewhere that Rangers will receive a second if Callahan re-signs (?) Is this true?

Well I disagree. Teams have a problem nowadays with sticking with what works. We did great in 2011-2012. So instead of sticking to that, we let a bunch of our role players go that off season, then dumped Gaborik and Dubinsky to the Blue Jackets in separate trades. Now Callahan is gone and I can only assume for someone who is retiring in a couple of years at best., although I don't know what his contract is like.
Definitely not worth picks too. I refuse to believe that if they hadn't gone about it like the trade deadline was the end he would be easily resigned just like our other stars that were out of contract. Even Callahan himself said he was surprised when he got the call because he thought they were close enough that a deal was inevitable.
And of all things, Sather says that the reason he had to say no to his captain was a no trade clause. You serious bro? Really? REALLY? You couldn't just give him the fricking no trade? It's not like he would be someone you would trade in a situation other than this anyway.
And I don't know about the last part but I do know that reports indicated that Callahan was not going to resign with a team he got traded to so i guess the joke's on the Lightning as well.
St. Louis is a great player who I've always liked, but he does not replace the captain of the Rangers. Sure, his offense is a little down this year, and he's never a huge scorer to begin with, but you also have to remember that he was injured for over a month. the Rangers are the new Knicks. I'm thinking of jumping ship before it's too late. Before they get rid of Girardi, Staal,, McDonaugh, Hagelin, and Stepan too. It's almost inevitable. This is why i couldn't take the Knicks anymore. I'm sick of rooting for laundry. I root ofr the payers that make the team. But if the payers aren't really a unit consistently, then what's the point of having a favorite team at all?

A fundamental element of being a GM in any major sport is not planning beyond two years. You see it in any franchise -- Contract and cap hits are continually kicked down the road until there is a one season excuse to start dumping. With the new CBA that is in place, it's difficult to pull off something like in the NBA, where contracts can be restructured easily. In today's league, you can't just give a few hundred K's more to this guy here, and that guy there. I know he has the C but sometimes you've gotta dump to recover. Imagine they hold on to Callahan, and maybe he even plays well and the Rangers get to the second or third round. Won't his asking price be higher, first of all? And second, the pressure on Sather will be even higher (and his agent would know this), because now he has no fallback option for Callahan. Sure, the free agent market may be somewhat predictable at this point, but how would that be more beneficial to keeping your unit anyways?
Sir, jump on the Islanders bandwagon
I'm cool with the Wings

The contract situation wouldn't go to the playoffs! they were a couple of days away at most.
And no way i become an Islanders fan.
And maybe it's not beneficial at all. But I think it is. And as a fan, I just want to see my team compete and root for them. And it's no fun if they win and I don't feel behind it. When we got to the conference finals, we did it using our core, with our home grown talent, and with Callahan as our captain. It's been downhill with every move we've made since then.

I'm just saying, if you're going to give an arm and a leg for him, which by your opinion is perfectly fine, you're going to expect much of the same situation over and over again.
And the perception that they were only a couple of days away is a bit distorted. If it was clear that Callahan was not movable, negotiations would be at a standstill until one party feels the urge of a deadline. No excuse to give in early

True I guess. But I still don't like it. The captain is not someone who is thrown away as trade deadline bait
Cally is a Ranger. And it disappoints me as a fan to think that those players aren't perceived as Rangers apparently. Everyone in the league is a rental.
It's like when they forced Chris Drury out as captain before. He was the captain, he was a leader (and he was from Connecticut ). Bu that didn't matter to anyone. It didn't matter that he got them into the playoffs on the final day of the season with a diving goal straight off of injury. Because only stats matter. I mean, he was declining I supposse, but he was 5 years younger than St. Louis is now, so...
Well, it's too late now. I wonder who Cally will end up signing with. There were rumors about the Sabres. I doubt he'll resign with Tampa Bay since he said he wasn't interested in resigning with another team if traded.
This is just so stupid.

You should have traded Richard in that deal too. I wonder if Tampa would have taken it. Kill two birds with one stone then, atleast. I kind of agree, you basically swapped rentals and essentially gave them two picks, and if Marty signs you give them another

So I read today that cap is not going to be $71M as earlier projected, so, *ahem*

They can have Richards for free, and we'll take Callahan in free agency.
But seriously, just have Richards. Just take him.

Yes, the Canucks f*cked up the goalie situation to begin with but the fact that they were still able to get what they got for Luongo is not bad at all.
Luongo's 34. Him being traded makes me scratch my head about where this team is really going after this season.

At least they have a shitload of cap space now.
Though I question the wisdom of Gillis to spend it. |

That's not possible. I'll always come up with something.
What a game tonight. But please, Wings don't have another let down in the 3rd.

I think most Canuck fans are hoping it wont be Gillis doing the spending in the summer
The Luongo trade was honestly pretty decent. I just wish it would have come a year earlier, because Lack has been pretty good for us this year, but Im not sure he is ever going to be that Stud starting goalie that we could have had in Schneider.
If we buy out Booth too, we will have loads of room. Also if we had waited 2 months to re-sign the sedins we probably could have saved about 4million in space...

A few minutes ago, the Red Wings announcer was joking about how Schneider let in 7 tonight...meanwhile Luongo has a shutout down in Florida

Gotta love Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond. Daniels trying to jinx Luongo and Redmond singing "Sweet Carolina" at the end of the game.
