How you view politics and your relationship with politicans has all to do with the system you are (and have been) living under. When we think about the "ideal Western democracy" we might see it as a universal goal, something which all should strive to achieve.
The problem is that many countries that have been ruled by dictators and similar regimes might feel great animosity towards politicans in general, regardless of what form of government they represent. This is all to clear when you look at the recent attempts to introduce a western type of democracy to countries that have been subjected to either dictatorship or a one-party system in the past.
You can ofcourse argue about what constitues "democracy". There are several instances where the process might have been somewhat democratic, but where the results are completely unjust.

Sorry to double post but a whole other thing:
A galaxy is nearing us and we will crash. We have about 4 billion years left, though.
"Crash" is the completely wrong word here. Melt into one galaxy is more appropriate.
Galaxies are no dense objects, which can be easily understood by thinking of how many light years of basically nothing are between our solar system and our nearest neighbors.
F.ex. think of one ping-pong ball in Berlin, and one in Paris. That's Sun and Proxima Centauri.
It is highly unlikely that any of the 1.3x10(11) stars present in both galaxies will collide with another one.
That said, more or less around the same time, the sun will inflate and make it unable for us to live in the solar system anymore.
Still, with current (and recent) technical evolution, if we not destroy our planet too soon, we'll be able to discover a habitable planet and travel there soon enough.

It makes me wonder, why does everyone keep going and trying to build a future or whatever... It will never last. One day, only one man will remain, and then that man will be gone. Why are we so persistent? Why trouble ourselves? We're only here for a blink of the eye, after all. (because we'll never last another 4 billion year, of course.)
Well, we could sit around and wait for death?
Actually, don't we care how our next generation will be able to live rather than thinking so far into the future?
I work for my possible children and grandchildren, not further. You can't anticipate further anyways.
Scientists say evolution is some sort of a cycle rather than a straight line, and the current cycle culminates with our species.
Evolution is designed to produce better organized organisms until the point the organism is so good that it basically annihilates itself (and probably some/many other highly evolved organisms) through destroying the fragile ecosystem the earth is, allowing lower, more modest organisms to develop more freely.

With baseballlover back it's time to discuss the debate between Romney and Obama, I think!
In my opinion, Obama wasn't too prepared and didn't come off real good. |

I concur. He was unprepared and it made him come off as arrogant, maybe even as much as Romney. Here are some trustworthy articles on the topic:

I love how according to Norwegian newspapers Obamas debate has just gotten worse and worse every day.
It started of as "not very good" before it was later described as "very bad". Yesterday it was up to "horrible".
One more week and it will have been so bad that Obama is forced to resign.

What the hell is Obama's daughter saying? I think the media blew that up, I don't think those are her exact words...
Anyway, I hope Obama won't blow his chances, because he isn't the most popular president in history (who is, actually?), so he'll have to watch out, if he wants to be re-elected! |

The second worst part of the debate is the proportion of what Romney said that is patently false, or hugely misleading. Fact Check organizations had a field day with Romney. The worst part was that Obama didn't call him out.
Strangely Obama's approval ratings are up, and he's still ahead among registered voters. Go figure.

Not the most universal team here but (regional) elections in Belgium scared me, seems like the whole nation is abandoning solidarity and massively voting for the right. I wonder what'll happen in 2014 with the National Elections.
(for those who don't know: Belgium is very difficult with Dutch-speaking and French-speaking part and of course small German-speaking part, but the Dutch-speaking and French-speaking are always fighting and now the Dutch-speaking right parties want to separate.) |

Now ? I've been hearing or reading that ever since I've been old enough o have a clue about Belgian politics. |

I didn't mean now as starting now, just the period now, these last years. But N-Va gaining power means it's getting concrete.
And not a lot want(ed) to separate, many just want to have more autonomy, not necessarily a separation. |

I got my absentee ballot in the mail today. Neither Ron Paul, nor Kathyern Lane are on it.
There is a write in space, but I think I'd rather write in a serious candidate, like Elvis, or Hugh Jass.

You've to write on it ? That's odd. What if you were disabled and couldn't write ? Or how can you prove it's not somebody else who voted then ?
Here you name somebody (at the police station, or something close to that - the gendarmerie station actually) to vote in your name. You'd better agree with that person, 'cause he or she's going to vote twice then. |

Here it's an obligation to vote. You have to show up and vote (can also vote blanco, but you have to come). I wish they'd change that, though. |
