A flat stage on Sicilia. We have to be very cautious cause the wind could blow the whole field in different groups.
A breakaway of 12 man got established. Notable riders are Mizayawa, Roulston, McCartney, Lorenzetto, Mortensen and Proni. But the most nobale rider up front is Santo Anza who after winning the first stage, is now in the break for the 3th time in 3 days.
Three teams are organising a chase at the front of the bunch. Ite are Garmin, Lampre and Movistar for today's topfavourites Farrar, Petacchi and Rojas.
Lorenzetto makes a desperate attempt but he and Mizayawa will be the last ones to get caught by the pack.
That's the sign for Garmin to start a sprint train for Farrar. Zabriskie, Fischer and Dean are leading him out while Bozic, Rojas and Petacchi sit on his wheel. Menchov fights very hard to stay at the front cause he knows the last km are very dangerous.
After a steep passage with 2 km to go, Farrar is leading under la flamme rouge with Bozic, Rojas and Petacchi trying to pass him.
But Farrar keeps up and takes his 2nd stage win. Rojas is 2nd, Bozic 3rd. Menchov finishes as 21th and behind him is a gap. Only other GC-contenders in the front group are Rodriguez, Velits and Sella. The others all lose 39" today.

Very good by Menchov to stay at the front and take 39" on his opponents.
Edited by Spilak23 on 08-10-2011 16:10
The second day on Sicilia. It will be one of the most exciting stages this Giro with two ascents of the Etna, the 2nd most active vulcan in Europe. Let's hope the two long climbs will make up for some fire works.
Today's breakaway passing a small town on the first ascent of the Etna. There are some good climbers who already lost some time overthere. Bruseghin, Sioutsou and Peraud are probably the best.
Three riders try to use the Etna climb to make the jump from the pack to the break. Sorensen and Mollema did something similar two days ago ending in a 4th and 2nd place. The 3rd rider is Fabio Duarte who after some tough days on the flat, seems to have found his good form.
Later on the climb, some others try to do the same. Rujano already lost a lot of time on the flat stages so he wants to use every climb to take back some time. Sanchez, Le Mevel and Codol also try to follow Rujano.
Mollema and Sorensen reached the break and are the first to pass the top of the Etna. Duarte had to let them go some km before the top. He from there on started climbing at his own pace and would reach the first group on the descent.
The break passes the intermediate sprint. This is the perfect place for an overview: the initial escapees (except of Roelandts who was droped on the first climb) and Mollema, Sorensen and Duarte are leading. Rujano is chasing alone, 2'30" behind. Sanchez and Le Mevel follow 30" later while the pack is 4' behind.
Three teams were controlling the race at the front of the bunch. It are Liquigas, BMC and Geox. They bring the pack to 3' af the start of the second climb of the Etna.
Basso is the first favourite to attack with around 15 km to go. He passes Sanchez and Le Mevel who try to follow. Some riders out of the pack also try to counter. Their names: Garzelli, Caruso, Velits and Anton. Menchov does not react but he let Wyss make a steady pace and he has Sastre still around him.
That was a good decision cause Wyss pace made everyting come back together. Both the initial breakaway as the Basso group. This results in some chaos. It's not clear who easily can pass the escapees so we will have to wait for a clear overview.
Three riders came out of the mess with a small advantage. Rujano, Kruiswijk and Le Mevel have a small gap with 10 km to go but Wyss and Sastre are chasing them back. They will get caught some km later.
5 km to go. One rider is leading. It's Denis Menchov who has a small gap to the others where Basso counters. Basso will reach Menchov and the two will start working together.
The duo could keep up and starts the last km with a small advantage over a larger group were Anton, Evans and Roche are chasing. Either Basso and Menchov could keep up or someone could come back from the escapees.
Noboby could jump from the chasing group to the front so Basso and Menchov are sprinting for the win. It's a very exciting sprint as neither can really get away.
Too bad for us but Basso edges out Menchov in the sprint. 2nd is still a good result for him. Most of the other contenders finish in a group 8" later but more as 20 riders finish inside a minute of Basso so there are no big changes in the GC.
Results:
Basso can be very happy with an epic victory on the Etna! 15 riders finished outside the time limit today. Most important are Chicchi, McEwen and Haedo.

Kruiswijk seems to be a sure bet for this jersey but Wyss can maybe hold of Mollema for 2nd place.

A very good stage by Menchov. He took on all his opponents except Basso. We can also be happy with the performance of Wyss and Sastrewho helped Menchov very hard. And maybe the nicest thing to see today was Duarte finally feeling a bit better and going in the attack!
Edited by Spilak23 on 08-10-2011 17:41
Thanks Dienblad and Baia. I think Menchov will not be able to beat Evans or Basso for the overal though.
Giro d'Italia: stage 10 Termoli - Teramo 158.2 km
After a rest day, which was used to transfer the Giro from Sicilia to the Italian mainland, the riders are moving North again following the Adriatic coastline. Today's road is almost completely flat. The last 20 km look tough on the profile but it is hardly 1% gradient so a mass sprint can be expected.
Today's 9 escapees. Their names: Ignatiev (Katusha), Lorenzetto (Astana), Roberts (SaxoBank), Lagutin (Vacansoleil), Stannard (Sky), Peraud (AG2R), Stybar (Quick-Step), McCartney (Radioschack) and Pedersen (Leopard).
As on the other flat stages, the chase is organised by the 3 teams of the top-sprinters. Today is the penultimate chance for the sprinters to get a stage win with all the mountains coming up.
When the pack came close to the escapees, some riders attacked, trying to delay their execution. Ignatiev and Lorenzetto still have a small gap to the pack with 10 km to go but also they will get caught.
It's again Garmin who makes a sprint train. This time, Vandevelde is leading with Fischer, Dean and Farrar in his wheel. All the other sprinters fight to get in Farrar's wheel but Petacchi is in the best position.
The lead-out by Fischer and Dean was rather weak this time so Farrar has to start his sprint with almost 2 km to go. This reduces his chances for the win. Could it be that the 1% gradient is harder as expected?
Farrar clearly loses some speed after passing the red flag so the other sprinters try to pass him. Petacchi and Goss seem to be in the best positions.
But it's Jose Joaquin Rojas Gil who takes a very nice win. He probably had more power left in the end as he is known to be a better climber as most other sprinters. Fernandez finishes 2nd and Goss takes 3rd.
Results:
Rojas is probably very happy with his first win in a GT.

No time lost = Good stage!
Edited by Spilak23 on 09-10-2011 12:26
Giro d'Italia: stage 11 Tortoreto - Castelfidardo 148.9 km
A shorter stage. Another dangerous stage as it's up and down all day. Differences between the favourites aren't expected though. Maybe a good day for a breakaway? We will try to get in the break and Menchov will follow the first favourites.
After a lot of tries to form a breakaway, only one rider can create a real gap. Rafael Valls is today's only escapee. He wins all mountain sprints today but is already too far in the KoM-standings. His gap peaks at around 8'.
That's when three teams start to chase him. He is no danger in the GC so BMC, Katusha and Euskaltel clearly go for a stage win with Evans, Rodriguez or Anton. While Sanchez is working, it becomes clear that Anton is the leader of the Basque team.
Valls is still leading when passing the last mountain-sprint but his gap is reduced to 2'30". His hard day will not be rewarded with something special.
Rodriguez then attacks on one of the latter climbs. Anton is the onlyone who wants to follow him. They start riding together and are 30" in front of the pack.
That gap is not big enough as they easily get caught by the pack on one of the flatter parts of the race. All of the Geox-riders ( except Valls) are still comfortably in the pack.
Valls journey is over on the last descent. No other attacks came so the win will be decided in the last final km uphill.
The duo of Anton and Rodriguez moved to the front again on the last hill and start to sprint for the victory. Sastre and Menchov are not far off but probably won't pass them.
Rodriguez beats Anton for the win while Vanendert takes the 3rd place. A nice victory in the 'maglia rosa'. Sastre finishes as 7th and Menchov as 11th. No gaps were made today.

Another good day. We made our sponsors very happy with being alone in the break today. Valls did very good ofcourse. Also nice to see was Sastre finally coming to the front and finishing in the top 10.

Giro d'Italia: stage 12 Castelfidardo - Ravenna 184.4 km
The 12 stage sees the peloton moving further up following the coastline. This stage is probably the flattest in the whole Giro and is also the last chance for the sprinters. Some riders will feeling very sad this evening knowing all they can do in this Giro is suffering.
Today's 6 escapees. Knowing this is the last flat stage, there chances to survive are equal to 0. Their names: Proni (Acqua e Sapone), Lagutin (Vacansoleil), Gasparotto (Astana), Faili (Farnese Vini), Mortensen (Leopard) and Roberts (SaxoBank).
And again Lampre, Movistar and Garmin start the chase. The riders who worked there ass of everyday also deserve some mentioning: Szgelhalmi, Kostyuk, Bono, Kondrut, Balloni (Lampre), Lopez, Madrazo, Oyarzun (Movistar) and Kreder, Lloyd, Navardauskas, Zabriskie, Vandevelde (Garmin).
These riders timed their job perfectly again. Roberts is the only escapee still in the lead with 10 km to go but the very convincing train is coming fast.
The usual leadouts are also there again. With 5 km to go, Vandevelde gives command to Fischer who is followed by Dean and Farrar. Petacchi and Rojas are again best positioned in the wheel of Farrar.
The leadout from Dean lasted longer today so he let Farrar go with a bit more as 1 km to go. Petacchi and Rojas are looming in his wheel though.
And Farrar could again not keep so the victory is for Alessandro Petacchi. Rojas finishes 2nd and Farrar 3rd. This means all three big sprinters (Farrar, Petacchi and Rojas) have won a mass sprint. No breaks in the pack, everyone finishes in the same time.
Results:
Petacchi has already won 26 Giro-stages but he is still very happy with each one of them.

Points:
Farrar took two stage wins and proved he was the strongest sprinter at the start. He will probably lose the sprinters jersey in the mountains or when he abandons.

Again no time lost. Tomorrow starts the real Giro!
Edited by Spilak23 on 09-10-2011 16:32
Giro d'Italia: stage 13 Spilimbergo - Grossglockner 164.4 km
The Giro starts now! With no flat stage coming up until the closing TT, the favourites are all in topform. The mountains start with a trip to Austria and the famous Grossglockner climb! Let's hope Menchov is strong enough to keep up with the best!
A breakaway group got established on the flat before the first climb. Some better climbers already in there tough. Some names are Marcato, Sarmiento, Stangelj, Bruseghin and Valls who after his long break 2 days ago, is again in the break to maybe take the KoM-jersey for a day.
Good old Andrea Noé jumped from the pack to the escapees on the first climb with a mission. And that is not good for Valls cause Noé beats him on the first mountain-sprint.
King of the Mountains Bauke Mollema feels his jersey is in danger so he attacks on today's second climb. Two other riders do the same. Sorensen and Betancourt are also alone chasing the break. The three are all divided by 30". Isn't it better to wait for eachother and work together?
The second mountain means the second KoM-sprint. Valls get again beaten by Noé who seems very strong. Bruseghin is third. The pack passes this point 5' later.
A longer flat part between the 2nd and 3rd climb saw Mollema coming closer to the front but the climb was just not long enough to take any KoM-points. Noe beated Valls for the third time. Since Valls isn't feeling bad, Noe must be feeling incredible.
When the pack was around 8' behind the leaders, the pack noticed that Mollema became a real danger so the third mountain is climbed with a harder pace which sees a lot of riders getting dropped. Only 50 riders remain in the first bunch on the descent. We still have all our riders in there except of Kozontchuk who got dropped and Valls who is in front.
The pack could start the final climb 4' behind the escapees due to hard work of mainly Geox and BMC. The stage win was still in reach for the favourites. The first riders who attacked out of the pack were Rodriguez, Sanchez and Kruiswijk. We then let Wyss and Duarte make a steady pace and that was a good decision as they reeled them, together with Sorensen and Betancourt, back in with 10 km to go.
At the front, Mollema upped the pace and started dropping most escapees. riders could follow in his wheel though. Valls still felt fairly well. Noe and Sarmiento had more trouble but were also following.
Then there was a very strong move out of the favourites group. It was Ivan Basso with an attack. First followed by Rujano, the Venezuelan couldn't really keep up. In the favourites group, Sastre, Wyss and Duarte were gone so Menchov had to work himself. Basso immediatly started passing initial escapees and looked very strong.
He had already passed everyone at the top of toeh Kasareck and it looked like he was going to his second stage win after the Etna. The second group is Mollema, a very strong Valls and Rujano. The favourites, where Evans and Anton attacked, were not far and Valls waited for Menchov at the top of the Kasareck to bring everyting together in the small descent. Basso lead then was around 1'.
Behind Basso, Anton made a strong attacked and it looked like also he could gap the other favourites. Menchov was really suffering in a group with Evans, Scarponi, Rujano, Pinotti, Mollema, Kruiswijk and Velits.
Basso was clearly the strongest today. He takes the win and the lead in the GC. He also seems to be the clear top favourite for the overal.
More as a minute later, the other favourites pass the finish line. Between them, the differences are only in seconds. Anton finishes 2nd, Rujano 3rd. Menchov ends in the back of this group as 9th.
One rider was missed upfront tough. It was the 'Maglia Rosa'. Joaquin Rodriguez finishes even further in a 2nd group. He loses his jersey and is now 3rd in the GC behind Basso and Menchov.

Not a great stage by Menchov but he only lost seconds on the other favourites except Basso, who seems unbeatable for the victory. We are happy with another great performance by Valls but a little disappointed in Sastre who wasn't really ablo to help Menchov today.
Edited by Spilak23 on 09-10-2011 17:37
Still in 2nd place, but you lost a lot of time today. I hope the next 2 stages will go better for you. And I really hope we don't see the same domination by Basso as in the Colnago-story by Tuco the Ugly....
Giro d'Italia: stage 14 Lienz - Monte Zoncolan 210.1 km
The riders go back to Italy to pass two of the hardest climbs in Europe. The last 50 km are made up of an ascent of the Monte Crostis with a dangerous descent which is not fully paved and then, the riders have to climb to the finish on the Monte Zoncola. The men will be divided from the boys today. This is a very important day for Menchov. Everybody helps him today.
To make it worse, the day started very fast. All breakaways were brought back by the pack untill the first climb were Christensen and Noe could get away. The latter is the first to pass the first KoM-sprint.
The second mountain-sprint sees another race-scenario. Rujano made the jump to the front when Noe fell back into the peloton. He probably feared what was coming up. The Venezoluan probably looked forward to what was coming up.
The riders try to jump from the pack to the front on the long descent towards the Monte Crostis. Mollema, who seems to do this every mountain-stage, and Le Mevel, who was already succesfull doing this. The gap to Rujano and Christensen was then already around 5' so they would never succeed.
One rider falls in the long descent. It's Spanish sprinter Rojas. He can resume the race but could come in danger by the time limit. That would be a real shame cause he has a good chance of winning some easier mountain-stages later this Giro.
When Rujano's gap rises above 10 minutes, one team takes up their responsibility as Liquigas is not strong enough to do so. BMC starts the chase for Evans.
Jose Rujano starts the ascent of the Monte Crostis with an advantage of 8' to the pack. Christensen, who got dropped on the small climb before the sprint, Le Mevel and Mollema are between them.
The start of the Monte Crostis in the pack sees one team coming to the front. Geox starts to do a good pace with Duarte and Sastre for their leader Menchov.
In the back, almost the whole Movistar team waited for their leader to bring him back although he has no GC to defend. Could they lose their whole team by this move?
Le Mevel and Mollema get caught with around 10 km to go to the top of the Monte Crostis. Rujano is then still 7'30" in front. Christensen is then already long gone.
Sastre was the first of Menchov's domestique to drop but when Duarte took over, he quickly created a gap. He is now riding 30" in front of the main group together with Wyss and Menchov.
Duarte dropped at the front and is now in a group together with Rodriguez and Le Mevel who couldn't follow Evans move to the front. The pink jersey of Ivan Basso can be seen in the back of the larger group. Does he have a bad day?
When Evans and Menchov started doing their pace, Rujano's lead decreased with more than a minute per km. They will form a leading trio with an advantage of 1' to the chasers.
But the pace upfront dropped once Evans and Menchov had reached Rujano and so, the chasers could connect again at the top of the Monte Crostis. Menchov is the first to pass this, after only one ascent, mythical mountain.
On the sterrato flat after the top of the Crostis, it becomes clear that there is a 10-men leading group. In this group are Menchov, Evans, Basso, Rodriguez, Pinotti, Anton ad a Androni-trio: Rujano, Sella and Serpa.
5 men follow at 1': Scarponi is the main victim of the Crostis. He is together with Roche, Garzelli, Le Mevel and Tiralongo.
Rujano attacked some metres before the start of the Zoncolan so he is the first to start the last climb. The favourites are only seconds away though.
The 2nd group couldn't come any closer in the descent so it looks like a podium in this Giro is gone for Scarponi. This means one lesser opponent for Menchov.
When Rujano got caught, Rodriguez was the next rider to attack. He could create a gap. One rider tries to counter. It's Emmanuele Sella who surprises everyone here. His teammate Serpa is then the first dropped from the group.
Rodriguez and Sella couldn't stay away long as Evans and Anton upped the pace with around 5 km to go. They could create a gap to the others. Basso was a little surprised and is now working hard to come back. It would not take long until he connects with the duo.
Menchov stays in the second group together with Sella, Rujano, Rodriguez and Kruiswijk. He is really suffering now but so look the others.
With 2 km to go, Evans upped the pace even more upfront and that makes Anton and Basso steadily losing ground. Is this the glory day of the Australian?
It looks so as he has a comfortable lead under the 1 km banner. No changes in the back. Anton and Basso 45" behind and the Menchov group, where Kruiswijk is now losing ground, is 1'30" behind.
It's Evans who takes a very nice and deserved win on the Monte Zoncolan after also being the strongest on the Monte Crostis. The question now is: "Can he take over the maglia rosa?"
No Basso finishes 2nd but not more as a minute behind. Anton takes 3rd seconds behind Basso. These 3 clearly look to be the strongest climbers this Giro.
The Menchov group finishes more as 2' behind. No big differences were made between these 5 riders though. A very strong Sella actually won the sprint for 4th here. Menchov finishes as 7th and drops one place in the GC. He is now 3th.
One group then still has to do the whole Zoncolan climb. These riders try their best but they all finish out of the time limit. 3 riders of both Lampre and Liquigas are send home after this stage which makes some teams, mainly Basso's, alot weaker. Kozontchuk can just avoid finishing outside the time limit with a half minute.

Another good but not great stage by Menchov. We certainly did well as a team helping Basso alot on the Monte Crostis. One rider dissapointed again though: Carlos Sastre. Evans was clearly the strongest today and will fight for the overal win with Basso. Anton, Menchov and Rodriguez will fight for the 3rd podium spot. Another remark: I wouldn't be surprised if next month, the UCI announces that Androni is caught at the use of doping.

Giro d'Italia: stage 15 Conegliano - Gardeccia/Val di Fassa 227.0 km
Well I think that the organisator thought that yesterday's stage wasn't hard enough. 5 hard climbs before the finish on the Gardeccia, a 6 km climb averaging 10%. Other famous climbs on the road today: the Passo di Giau: the Cima Coppi this year as the highest mountain during the Giro and the Passo Fedaia. Menchov will go for a better result as Anton and Rogriguez, his opponents for the 3rd place.
The day started fast again. The first attacks on the flat were all brought back by the pack and on the first climb, Smyd made a fairly hard pace on today's first climb. A split occurs behind the first 25 riders. All Geox riders are in the first group together with Basso and Rodriguez. Evans and Anton are in the second group surrounded by their teammates.
The descent of the climb saw everybody realise the day is still long. The pace at the front and the first couple of groups come together.
Two riders then go in the attack. Ten Dam and Pineau form today's break. They get a rather large gap on one of the lone flat parts of today.
At the top of the second climb, Ten Dam is riding alone. His gap to the pack is over 8' minutes. Chances are very slim he will actually survive the rest of the day.
One rider then already regrets his earlier attack. Pineau cracked on only today's second climb. He will survive this climb but will get caught by the pack on the descent.
The pace in the pack was pushed by Euskaltel and BMC on the climb, the descent and the flat part before the Giau. Only 50 riders are then still in the bunch. Some riders, who never came back after the first climb, are then already more as 20' behind with still 3 climbs to come.
Laurens Ten Dam is still leading alone and starts the Passo di Giau with an advantage of 7'. He will climb the whole Giau alone and takes this year's Cima Coppi.
The pack pass the highest point of this Giro 5' later. Samuel Sanchez took the whole Giau to his account and reduced the bunch even further. Sanchez pace was too high to see any attacks. But that pace also made some Geox riders fall back: Valls, Duran, Ardila and Brändle all dropped back. That means Menchov still has 4 teammates: Sastre, Duarte and Wyss.
Ten Dam passes the intermediate sprint at the foot of the Fedaia with an advantage of 4'. Surviving the Fedaia looks very hard.
The peloton, or what remains of the peloton also started the Fedaia and we see the first attacks by some favourites. Scarponi, Rodriguez, Kruiswijk and Roche make their move but are brought back by a good pace from Sastre. Menchov's tactic is to follow at the front of this group but not react on explosive attacks.
The main victim of the hard pace with the favourites is yesterday's surprising 5th Sella. He won a stage on the Fedaia some years ago but has a lot of troubles on today's ascent.
At the front, it was the Maglia Rosa himself pulling the group. The group catched up to Ten Dam, who after riding alone for a good part of the day seems to have trouble to stay on his bike. Sastre can't follow the pace anymore and drops back a little.
No more attacks came and a 7 men leading group passes the top of the Fedaia. Basso, Evans, Menchov, Anton, Scarponi, Rujano, Roche have a small gap to some chasers with Rodriguez. Good news for Menchov as one of his opponents seems to have some problems. Sastre is one group later.
One rider then takes too much risks and falls in one of the hard turns in the descent. At the front, some riders could come back to the front group. Menchov can again be helped by Sastre.
The favourites then fight hard to start first at the Gardeccia cause the climb has narrow roads. Menchov is in front together with Anton and Basso. No favourite seems to be at the back of this group though.
Anton doesn't wait long to make his attack. No one reacts. Menchov decides to make his own pace and hope he doesn't lose too much time.
Basso and Evans then try to jump to Anton. The leader can make the jump but Evans can't come closer as 15". The first two steadily increase their lead and will fight for the win today.
Menchov is in a second group together with Rujano and Scarponi. It would be a good day if he could stay here and take some time to eliminate Rodriguez for the podium.
At the front, the victory would be decided in a sprint between Anton and Basso where the first one is better known to be a good finisher also winning. He seems very strong in the mountains after losing time on the flat stages.
Rujano could pass Evans on the last metres to take third. He is no danger for the GC while the Aussie seems not be able to endanger Basso for the win and it looks like he will finish 2nd in the overal. Behind, Menchov rode a very strong last km almost catching up to Evans and taking some more time on Scarponi.
Results:
Igor Anton takes the first stage victory in the Giro in the history of his Euskaltel team.
GC:
Basso seems very hard to beat.
Points:
U25:
Teams:
A good stage by Basso. He lost almost two minutes on Anton but I don't think the Spaniard will take more time in the next mountain stages and there are still some TT km's left. Rodriguez is no danger anymore for the 3rd place.
