Colnago - CSF Inox - 2012 Season Preview
Avin Wargunnson
Great win Smile
Frapporti had to really develop his climbing, he seems now as the good option for the hilly races, still some new italian puncher would be nice Wink
I'll be back

@ all: Thanks. Always nice to get a win!

Frapporti has developed into a good-Continental level puncheur. His hill rating is now a 76 and he has a good sprint (I will post his full stats later).

Trofeo Matteotti

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/553.jpg

Pescara - Pescara: 185.2km

The most populated Abruzzese city, Pescara, plays host to the next race on Colnago's calendar, the Trofeo Matteotti. The peloton will do 11 laps of a circuit course. A climb is featured, and Domenico Pozzovivo will try to go for back-to-back wins. If the course isn't hard enough, the team also has Sacha Modolo and Marco Frapporti for the sprint.

On the first lap, Manuele Caddeo made a bid to join the forming breakaway group.

Caddeo attacks with Manuele Fedele (D'Angelo & Antenucci - Nippo).

The two made the move, and were joined by 11 other riders. The peloton did not fight its creation, and the breakaway started to create an advantage.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/555.jpg
Caddeo leads the break back into Pescara.

Further attacks came from the peloton and Omar Lombardi went with the attacking riders.

Up the road in the breakaway, Francesco Failli (Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli) and Sergey Lagutin (Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team) had dropped the rest of their companions.

A small chase group containing Caddeo was the next group.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/556.jpg
Failli and Lagutin were the strongest in the breakaway.

Eventually, Lombardi reached his teammate Caddeo Their chase group was made up of 6 riders. After the 7th lap, they were 1'06 behind the leading pair. The peloton was further back, sitting with a disadvantage of 4'20.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/557.jpg
Lombardi and Caddeo chase the leaders.

By the end of the 9th lap, the chase group had lost ground on Failli and Lagutin.

The peloton was the opposite, slicing their lead in half. With two 17km laps left, they were only 2'15 back.

At the start of the final lap, the peloton caught and arrested Failli and Lagutin.

The peloton was still quite large. With over 90 riders, Colnago had Pozzovivo, Modolo, Frapporti, Lombardi, Filippo Savini, and Angelo Pagani still present.

Approaching the final climb, Pozzovivo attacked.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/558.jpg
Pozzovivo is again the instigator.

Pozzovivo mistimed his move, going too early, and was quite easily caught on the final climb by the peloton. As well, riding for consecutive days, he was likely paying for his efforts in the Coppa Placci. In the end, he still placed well, finishing 16th.

As Colnago thought, the day was to end in a mass sprint. Modolo was feeling good and positioned well towards the front of the group. At the flamme rouge, he jumped out of the wheel of Danilo Napolitano (Acqua & Sapone) and strove for the line.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/559.jpg
The situation 1km out.

Modolo looked much better than he had in China, and was riding well down the straightaway. But behind him, Jure Kocjan (Team Type 1) and Daniele Pietropolli (Lampre - ISD) were following his wheel. The pair passed him late, with Kocjan taking the win just ahead of Pietropolli.

Modolo fought off Enrico Gasparotto (Pro Team Astana) to complete the podium. While he still looks for his first win of the season, the team was pleased with this improvement.

Kocjan begins to celebrate his win.

These sprints are hard to win, so 3rd with Modolo is a good result! And I love your gameplay, you keep on attacking!!

Good sprint by Modolo. Too bad Pozzo's attack failed. One remark though, is Hoogerland Oezbekian champion or is it Lagutin? Wink

Tuco the Ugly
@ dienblad: Thanks. It may not always be tactically sound for PCM, but I prefer being aggressive and trying audacious moves; when it works, it feels much better.

@ Pellizotti2: Thanks.

@ Spilak23: Err..What are you talking about?? Hehe, fixed it. Thanks for the catch. Too be honest I wasn't paying much attention to them and wrote the wrong name down.

Great reporting as always Tuco. I've now bought a new laptop and have been getting to grips with PCM11 the last few days. A beautiful game as you say. Inspired by your writing, I may even begin my own story when I start my next career.

Trainee Joins Colnago Squad

Hailing from Rieti, the capital city of the similarly named province in Lazio, 20 year old Renato Baroni will join the Colnago - CSF Inox squad for the rest of the year. Scouted by Gianluca Zanini, the big powerful rider has a lot of room for improvement.

Colnago's main competition for his signature came from Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli and Lampre - ISD.

Lampre did manage to sneak Pietro Lombardo away from Colnago. Despite Colnago's financial aid, Lombardo, Baroni's junior teammate, decided to take the contract offer from the larger Lampre squad.

Baroni will line-up for the team in Denmark, getting his first experience in the pro peloton.

Avin Wargunnson
Nice 3rd with Modolo, great report and month overview once again good luck in August Smile
Btw. Frapporti developed well and nice signing in young Baroni
I'll be back

Tuco the Ugly
@ Avin Wargunnson: Thanks. I'm pretty happy with Baroni. He won't be a GC rider, but he'll provide support on the flats and perhaps get some wins from breakaways. Probably sacrilegious to say, but I'm hoping he will develop into a worse-climbing Jens Voigt.

Post Danmark Rundt

For the last time in the 2011, Colnago - CSF Inox will race outside of Italy. The location is not as exotic as Malaysia or China, but instead Denmark. In recent years, the race has been dominated by SaxoBank SunGard and its various incarnations. The team is again back in an attempt to win its home tour.

Notably absent is Jakob Fuglsang (Leopard Trek), the winner of the past three editions.

The race is six stages long, and unsurprisingly, flat. The individual time trial in Helsingør could well decided the GC.

The race starts in the Jutland peninsula, with a flat stage beginning and ending in Esbjerg. Colnago come into this race looking to get Sacha Modolo going. A good result in the Trofeo Matteotti has the team believing he will open his winning account here.

Before that, the break.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/563.jpg
No one notable in the break of 9.

Taking ownership of the peloton, Colnago helped control the pace of the bunch for most of the day. At Gredstedbro the break's lead was 4'49. It grew to its maximum, 9'07, with 100km to go.

Then, Colnago worked to reduce it.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/564.jpg
Colnago is on the front.

The team did a good job at reeling in the escapees and the stage was set for a mass sprint.

However, here, much like in China, Modolo faltered. He had trouble getting into good position and could only manage 11th.

Juan José Haedo (Saxo Bank SunGard) took the first stage, giving his team a nice win on home soil.

Haedo takes the win in front of Daryl Impey (Team NetApp).

The weather turned the next day as the peloton headed towards the major city of Aarhus. The miserable conditions didn't deter attackers. A break of 12 formed in the early kilometers.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/566.jpg
Another nameless break.

Colnago, in conjunction with several other teams easily arrested this group too.

However, the pace fell approaching the line. This gave Michael Reihs (Christina Watches - Onfone) the brief moment to attack.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/567.jpg
Reihs tries to give another Danish team a win.

The move startled the slumbering peloton, however, the sprint trains brought the group forward fast enough to close this attack down.

Yesterday's runner-up, Impey got a nice lead-out from teammate Jesús Del Nero and took the win, assuming the race lead.

Modolo again disappointed, finishing in 12th. His lead-out man, Manuel Belletti did better, crossing the line 8th.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/568.jpg
Impey wins in the rain.

Moving south in the Jutland peninsula, the third stage would take the riders away from Aarhus to Vejle. Again, the day began with rain.

For nearly the first half of the race, it was attack after attack. Omar Lombardi, Renato Baroni, and Alberto Contoli all tried to escape the peloton for the team. However, every early move was pulled back.

Eventually, a small climb at the halfway point was the launching pad for a breakaway. 13 riders were in the move. None for Colnago.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/569.jpg
The breakaway tries to dodge rain drops.

Behind, the peloton was tired. Many of Colnago's workers were low on energy from their early attacks. Additionally, the other teams were tired from controlling the same attacks.

Up the road, the breakaway's lead was beginning to grow dangerous.

In the closing kilometers, the peloton finally got its act together. They caught up enough to avoid losing any time. However, the stage win was out of reach.

Blaz Furdi (Adria Mobil) proved to be the strongest, winning from the break. Behind, the road was congested with riders from the break and the charging peloton.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/570.jpg
Furdi takes the win.

The race moved to Zealand for the fourth stage.

The day was rather dull, with a very small breakaway. Lombardi had to withdraw due a sprained wrist.

A sprint finish decided the day, and again, Impey won. This time, in quite dominant fashion.

Colnago's sprinting woes continued. Belletti and Modolo finished 12th and 14th respectively.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/571.jpg
Impey looks back to see he's crushed the field.

Entering the time trial, thanks to two stage wins, Impey held a 20 second lead over Haedo. While the Argentine should be no challenge, some riders from lower down in the GC could threaten Impey's grasp on the leader's jersey.

In the land of Hamlet, Colnago's tour did not improve much. Per usual, the team put in a lackluster effort in the time trial. Andrea Pasqualon was the best finisher for the team, finishing in 39th, 50 seconds off the winning time.

Perhaps the best stage racer in the field, Tejay Van Garderen (HTC - Highroad) came into the day 52 seconds back on Impey. His time of 19'23 was by far the fastest when he completed.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/572.jpg
Van Garderen pushes to keep his speed up.

Only one could beat that time. Dane track star Michael Mørkøv (Saxo Bank SunGard). He pushed hard through the finish line, besting the American by four seconds.

With one flat stage left, Impey had performed well enough to remain in the lead. His closest competitor was young Jetse Bol (Rabobank Continental Team) who was 13 seconds adrift.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/573.jpg
Mørkøv gives his team its second stage.

With the last stage of the Tour of Denmark upon the peloton, the riders were hesitant to attack. Contoli went off on a ride by himself.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/574.jpg
Contoli is the only rider willing to attack.

By himself, he built up a solid lead. However, a pot hole in the road flatted his tire. By the time he was on his way, the peloton was nearing so he sat up.

A group of 5 took advantage of the situation and formed a second breakaway. Much like Stage 3, this mid-stage breakaway messed up the peloton's chase.

With none of the riders dangerous in the GC, most teams did not put up a fight. Colnago still pulled on the front, looking to get a half-decent result.

Again like Stage 3, the peloton did not lose time but didn't get their act together in time to win the stage. Constantino Zaballa (Miche - Guerciotti) easily bested his companions.

In a cruel twist, Modolo performed exceptionally well in the sprint, leading the peloton in seconds later. Had the team worked a bit harder, he would've had his win...

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/575.jpg
Zaballa takes the stage; Impey the overall.

Tuco the Ugly
@ dienblad: Thanks for forgetting about it Wink Kind of one of those races that I'm not really sure why I participated in.

Also, I'm terrible at sprints. I either waste too much energy being in the front of the group, or am too far back.

G.P. Camaiore

Angelo Pagani tried to get into the break for Colnago. Two tries, and each time he chose the wrong move. Ultimately, 9 riders escaped the grasp of the peloton before they hit Monte Pitoro.

The day's break.

The break reached the top of the climb for the first time with a lead of 3'05.

With Colnago unrepresented, they controlled the peloton from the front of the group. They kept the break's lead pinned around the same mark.

The 2nd time around the lead was 3'08; the third, 3'29; the fourth, 2'57.

The penultimate time over the climb, the break's lead was down to 1'40. It was clear the riders in the move were tiring.

On the last time up, the favorite's began to attack. The first to move was Davide Rebellin (Miche - Guerciotti). Immediately, Domenico Pozzovivo was in his wheel.

Pozzovivo goes after Rebellin.

Following those two were Matteo Carrara and Wout Poels (Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team), Mikhail Ignatiev (Katusha Team), Kevin De Weert (Quick·Step Cycling Team), and Staf Scheirlinckx (Veranda's Willems - Accent).

The group sprinted up the climb, catching the three remaining break riders. However, at the very top of the climb, Pozzovivo began to suffer and lost contact with the group.

With a short descent into Camaiore, Pozzovivo was in no man's land, desperately trying to get back with the lead group.

Pozzovivo was exhausted. He managed to hold off the peloton, finishing in 10th.

The leading group of 9 descended safely. Despite the crowd anticipating it, no late attack came. Carrara easily defeated his companions. The aggressive Rebellin settled for 2nd.

Campione d'Italia - Varesine: 196.1km

Trittico Lombardo is upon us. First up, the most prestigious of the three races, Tre Valli Varesine. A race that dates back to 1919, it is full of history. The team will certainly be hoping for a good result here with Domenico Pozzovivo.

Colnago wanted representation in the day's break and responsibility fell to Paolo Locatelli. The young rider made several attempts, but did not choose the right move. Lampre and Vacansoleil made the first section of the race very hard for everyone, tightly controlling the race.

Eventually a move did get away.

The break.

100km to go, Francesco Failli (Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli) left the peloton and attacked. With shocking ease, he bridged the gap to the breakaway group.

As he put the pressure on the breakaway, Lampre and Vacansoleil kept things hard in the peloton.

Lampre and Vacansoleil made the day hard.

The final climb was to be tackled 7 times by the peloton. At its first completion, the breakaway's lead was 5'03. From here, it began to be reduced steadily.

At the top of the 5th time around, three riders separated themselves from their fellow escapees. Surprisingly, Failli wasn't in the original selection. It was Fortunato Baliani (D'Angelo & Antenucci - Nippo), Pawel Cieslik (Bank BGZ), and Bernardo Colex (Amore & Vita).

Baliani and co. make a gap.

Back in the escape group, Failli pushed the pace, dropping everyone else. Shortly, he regained contact with the leading group.

Behind the peloton pushed. With one circuit left, they were 1'19 behind the lead group.

The peloton flies around the final corner before the last climb.

As the riders zoomed around the corner, the climb stood them square in the face for the last time. With a group up the road, it was nervy.

Then, Ivan Basso (Liquigas - Cannondale) goes. Following him were Davide Rebellin (Miche - Guerciotti) and Pozzovivo.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/587.jpg
The attacsk begin.

The three create a small gap as others scrambled to respond. Danilo Di Luca (Katusha Team) was able to make their group. As they closed in on the lead group and the line, one name was conspicuously absent, Damiano Cunego (Lampre - ISD).

Basso stopped his attack. Pozzovivo, wanting to reach the lead group, and keep the pressure up on Cunego, kicked again.

As he got out of his seat to look back, he saw Il Piccolo Principe...

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/588.jpg
Pozzovivo goes, realizing that Cunego wasn't dislodged.

Pozzovivo's attack took this small group away from the peloton and right up to the wheels of the break riders. It greatly aided Basso and Cunego who had slingshot past him. Still whoever had the most energy left would win the final kilometer, and the day.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/589.jpg
1km to the line.

One man was clearly head and shoulders above everyone in the end. Cunego.

Originally gapped, he fought his way back, and then destroyed his rivals in the final meters to take a very nice win.

Basso was the closest to the 2004 Giro winner, while Baliani managed to hang on, completing the podium. Pozzovivo finished in 5th, another nice result for the team.

Tuco the Ugly
Coppa Agostoni

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/591.jpg

Lissone - Lissone: 196.8km

A very similar field will line-up for the Coppa Agostoni. Named after Ugo Agostoni, one major climb dominates the parcours. When it peaks, there is still a considerable distance to the finish. Any fast man that can survive the climb will have a good shot at winning; the puncheurs will push the pace hoping to avoid a drag race.

A large break of 16 riders got away. Colnago didn't have a rider in the move. They anticipated the large group getting pulled back, and when it didn't were not willing to bring it back in, believing it foolish to waste the helpers on such a mission.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/592.jpg
The breakaway rounds a turn.

80km into the day, three riders jumped from the peloton. They were Mitja Mahoric (Adria Mobil), Stanislav Kozúbek (PSK Whirpool - Author), and Alexey Tsatevitch (Itera - Katusha). In what is a common occurrence these days, they easily bridged to the breakaway.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/593.jpg
Three adventurous riders.

At the bottom of the climb, the breakaway was 5'25 ahead of the group.

The pace soon rose in the main field. The increase was too much for every Colnago rider. This wasn't surprising in some instances, but when Marco Frapporti, Manuele Caddeo, and Federico Canuti were dropped, leader Domenico Pozzovivo was now isolated.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/594.jpg
Pozzovivo alone, still with many kilometers left.

At the top of the climb, Mahoric and Kozúbek had dropped their companions. They crested with a lead of 4'20.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/595.jpg
Mahoric and Kozúbek begin the descent.

The peloton went over the top with only 21 riders.

Behind the peloton, Frapporti's day got worse, as he crashed. He would be fine, but finished in 67th along with some nice, new road rash.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/596.jpg
Frapport had a tough day.

There were still two small climbs before a long descent back into Lissone. On the final climb Mahoric started to pull away from Kozúbek. At the top of the final climb, a long descent and lonely flat road lay before the Slovenian.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/597.jpg
Mahoric rides away.

In the chase group, Ivan Basso (Liquigas - Cannondale) attacked just before the final climb. Pozzovivo marked him closely.

They began the final descent, still with a long way to the finish, 25 seconds ahead of the other favorites.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/598.jpg
Pozzovivo won't let Basso out of his sights.

The move was never likely to succeed, and soon, the two were back in the chase group.

Up the road, Mahoric was trying to find a good rhythm. He went under the 20km to go banner with a lead of 2'04. A nice lead, but unlikely to hold up if the chase group organized.

Mahoric put in the ride of the day.

The chase group was closing on Mahoric. To his credit, he put up a valiant fight, forcing all the riders to really commit to the chase. The flamme rouge was approaching and he still led.

3km to go, and he, although slowing, was still 30 seconds ahead. Pozzovivo thought this was his opportunity, and attacked on the flat.

Pozzovivo goes.

Ultimately, the race was not tough enough, and his competitors had enough energy to respond to the move. They simply upped their pace, and by the time the final sprint began, Pozzovivo's gap had disappeared.

As Mahoric struggled down the final straight, Damiano Cunego (Lampre - ISD), displayed his fine sprinting ability. For the second day in a row, he powered his way to victory.

The Liquigas duo of Basso and Sylwester Szmyd were also able to overtake Mahoric, grabbing the podium spot. The valiant rider had to settle for 4th.

Tired from his late attack, Pozzovivo still managed 6th, another solid Top 10 ride.

Cunego is proving to be unbeatable.

Good results, Cunego is just too good, can't argue with that. Good luck for the rest of the season.
