Gent - Wevelgem
img139.imageshack.us/img139/2149/gentwevelgem.gif
The Gent–Wevelgem is a Flanders Classics cycle road race held in Belgium in early April each year. The event was first run in 1934, and it is often called the sprinters' classic due to its flat finishing terrain. Its early-season date means riders are often tested by wind and rain. Further challenges include a number of climbs, including two ascents of the cobbled, difficult, and often selective Kemmelberg.

Indeed, the selectivity of the course means that very few editions of Gent–Wevelgem actually end in a bunch sprint. An smaller elite group (including some sprinters) often contest the finish line. In recent years, the race has been situated on the Wednesday between de Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris–Roubaix, and while not officially part of the Vlaamse Wielerweek (Flemish cycling week), it can be seen as an unofficial finale of the series of cycling classics in Flanders. In 2010 the fixed date of the race shifted from the Wednesday after the Ronde van Vlaanderen to the Sunday before the Ronde. Since 2005 the race has been part of the UCI ProTour, and since 2009, part of the UCI World Ranking calendar.
Most wins: Robert Van Eenaeme (BEL), Rik Van Looy (BEL), Eddy Merckx (BEL), Mario Cipollini (ITA) 3
Winner 2009: Edvald Boasson Hagen

The Shack: Like at the E3-Prijs, Gert Steegmans will lead our squad here. Rosseler is luxury-teammate and Co-Leader, Vaitkus, Muravyev, Rast, Bewley and Selander are helper.

The opposition: Surprisingly, Tom Boonen and Fabian Cancellara, the top favourites for April, miss here, just like Thor Hushovd, who had a dissapointing race yesterday. So the favourites here Filippo Pozatto, Stijn Devolder, Juan-Antonio Flecha and Leif Hoste. Also the E3-Prijs winner, Staf Scheirlinckx, competes today.
But we have also a lot of good sprinters here, favourites in a bunch sprint are Marc Cavendish, Gerald Ciolek, Daniele Bennati, Robbie McEwen, Tyler Farrar and Allan Davis. A few teams even have two good sprinter here like André Greipel or Danilo Napolitano.

Deinze - Wevelgem, 218,2 km
img683.imageshack.us/img683/8215/gentwevelgemprofil.jpg
An interesting race. The first half and the last 25km are flat, but between that, there are a lot of hellingen, including Kemmelberg, Mont de Cats, Mont Noir or Scherpenberg. But normally, we will see a bunch sprint at the finish.

Team goals:
- Top 10 (Steegmans)

Favourites: Filippo Pozatto, Juan-Antonio Flecha, Stijn Devolder, Leif Hoste, Matti Breschel.
My tip: Cavendish is well supported and should win if it ends in a bunch sprint.

roturn
Good luck with Steegmans, one of the big favourites I think. Cavendish, Ciolek etc. shouldn`t make it over the hills and cobbles.

janne_837
Yeah right, they had not made it in the front group Wink

img257.imageshack.us/img257/7954/k2pcm0001.jpg
Depart in Deinze.

img443.imageshack.us/img443/5900/k2pcm0002.jpg
10 rider today in the breakaway: Dominik Nerz (Milram), Tom Stubbe (Omega Pharma), Luis Pasamontes (Caisse d'Epargne), Iván Velasco (Euskaltel), Bauke Mollema (Rabobank), Sergey Renev (Astana), Thomas Faiers (Footon), Serguei Klimov (Katusha), Perrig Quemeneur (Bbox) and Davide Appollonio (Cervélo).

img257.imageshack.us/img257/4479/k2pcm0003.jpg
Here at the Mont des Chats. The breakaway with almost 7 minutes in front.

img534.imageshack.us/img534/9122/k2pcm0004.jpg
The Kemmelberg. The peloton still 5 minutes down.

img812.imageshack.us/img812/2259/k2pcm0005.jpg
At the second crossing over the Kemmelberg, the peloton caught the breakaway. Just 97 rider stay in the front group. We came in the interesting part of the race.

img146.imageshack.us/img146/9694/k2pcm0006.jpg
But the pace were to high and at the descent of the Kemmelberg, the pack split in several group. 18 rider in the front group, including Steegmans, who is the best sprinter in this group.

img841.imageshack.us/img841/1475/k2pcm0007.jpg
And Delvolder with a surprise attack with just 4,7km to go! Pozatto and Flecha launch the attack, and Eisel hold himself at the backwheel from Pozatto.

img808.imageshack.us/img808/5046/k2pcm0008.jpg
And that is the situation, 2400m before the finish. Devolder in front, then Pippo, Flecha and Eisel, in the third group Steegmans in front.

img221.imageshack.us/img221/8013/k2pcm0009v.jpg
Flame rouge! Devolder losts speed while Flecha and Pozatto came at the right. Eisel and Steegmans just fight for the fourth.

img543.imageshack.us/img543/6140/k2pcm0010.jpg
But at the end, Flecha and Pozatto were not able to pass Stijn, who could celebrate his first win at Gent-Wevelgem. Eisel could beat Gert with a few milimeter, so a fifth place for us.

Well, a fifth place is still a great success, but I think we had to win after Gert was the best sprinter in the front group. But at the end, another good performance from Gert at the cobble classics.

5th Wink Thank you, I am really happy, 5th in a ProTour-Classic is not bad, compared to that what RadioShack was able to do in real life. My next goal is to get a Top10 in de Ronde or in Roubaix, pretty hard but Steegmans seems to be in shape actually.

Vuelta Ciclista a Catalunya
Stage 6: Sant Cugat del Vallès - Circuit de Catalunya, 109,2 km
img225.imageshack.us/img225/1598/catalunyastage7.jpg
The last stage in Catalunya is probably the easiest one. Quite flat, we will see a bunch sprint if not a breakaway will make it to the finish.

Team goals:
- Attack and win the two intermediate sprints (Popovych)
- No time loss (Horner, Zubeldia, Paulinho)
- Top 10 (Impey)

Favourites: Mirco Lorenzetto, Graeme Brown, Russell Downing, Juan José Haedo, Fabio Sabatini.
My tip: Russell Downing looked good at the last bunch sprint, and he has today an extra motivation: Stage win = overall win.

It seems that our plan works perfect! After an early attack, Popovych got away, the peloton seemed not interested in chasing him.

Popovych slowed down and get caught by the breakaway (with Adam Hansen (Colombia), Branislau Samoilau (QuickStep), Joaquín Novoa (Cervélo), David Gutiérrez Gutiérrez (Footon), Gustavo César Veloso and Carlos Castaño (both Xacobeo). After passing Popo, César Veloso accelerated, only his teammate Castaño followed him.

But with 21,1km to go, the pack destroyed the dream of Xacobeo to get a second stage win.

img844.imageshack.us/img844/5046/k2pcm0008.jpg
The sprinter teams really force the pace, and the peloton split in two big groups. But in the second group, including Daniel Navarro , Bradley Wiggins and Marco Pinotti, Colombia worked hard to close the gap.

img820.imageshack.us/img820/5137/k2pcm0009.jpg
And with 2400m to the line, the front grouo started the sprint. Unfortunaletly, the pace tired Impey to much, so had no chance to get a really good place here.

It seems that he had no good legs today, he was to tired sprint today.

At the end, a happy Mikhaylo Khalilov can celebrate his victory today, nobody was able to beat him, strong performance from the ukrainian.

The second group came in. Thanks to the weird gap system in PCM 2010, they had the same time as Khalilov.

Nice developing with Paulinho. Might be a good Vuelta leader in the next years.

Also good luck in the Ronde and Paris Roubaix. Especially now with 3 favourites less.
Sounds like a Tom Boonen April Wink

FreitasPCM
I see Cance is inured... Ouch. Maybe Gert will have better results in the cobbles then. Cool

janne_837
@Roturn
Right, he would be good enough. Did not had thought that he still develope with 30.
Yeah, Tom showed already at the Driedaagse that he is in shape and he beat there the other favourites.

@FreitasPCM
Yep. Of course it is worse, but I think we have a good chance now to get our Top10 in one of the cobble classics.

The competitors at Amstel Gold Race are as followed: 18 PT + Bbox, Cervélo, Skil, Vacansoleil.

16 PT-Teams (without FDJ and Footon) will take part in Liège - Bastogne - Liège. 9 teams asked for a wildcard: Andalucía, Androni Giocattoli, BMC, Bbox, CDC - Cavalière, CarmioOro, Cervélo, Loulé - Louletano, Saur, Vacansoleil.

Tom Boonen
Who else if his biggest opponent is injured is the top favourite in Vlaanderen? After an early victory at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, he ride a good Paris-Nice with two stage wins. Only 11th in Milano-San Remo and 14th in the E3-Prijs, but managed to win the Driedaagse De Panne. After that success, he is the top favourite here.

img821.imageshack.us/img821/1633/stern.jpgimg821.imageshack.us/img821/1633/stern.jpgimg821.imageshack.us/img821/1633/stern.jpgimg821.imageshack.us/img821/1633/stern.jpg
Filippo Pozatto
13th at Het Nieuwsblad, 6th in Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, maybe not the best possible February for him. But after his great 8th place in San Remo, he get 9th at the E3-Prijs and even 3rd in Wevelgem. And after his second place at the Driedaagse, we know that he is in shape and dangerous.

Juan-Antonio Flecha

Since February, he made the best results from all the favourites. 6th in Gent, and then 2nd places at the E3-Prijs, Dwars door Vlaanderen and Gent-Wevelgem. His only problem could be that his last victory was 2005. Did he still know how to win?

Until yet a perfekt cobble saison for him. Wins at Dwars door Vlaanderen at Gent-Wevelgem, he showed that he is nearly unbeatable at the moment. But his old problem still exists: He is not the only leader in his team.

Philippe Gilbert
Of course Omega Pharma losts Leif Hoste, but we can not forget Gilbert. After a good february with a stage win and the second place in the GC at Qatar, he finished 5th in the Omloop. A fantastic Paris-Nice, another stage win and the overall, 7th in Milano-San Remo. Maybe 15th in Harelbeke is not that good, but now he is the only leader of his squad.

img821.imageshack.us/img821/1633/stern.jpgimg821.imageshack.us/img821/1633/stern.jpg
Thor Hushovd
We are on the cobbles, so he is of course a favourite. But his main problem will be that he did not get any notable result on a cobble classic 2010, and he just finished 11th at the Driedaagse.

Heinrich Haussler
3rd in Kuurne, 10th in Het Nieuwsblad, 12th at the E3-Prijs and 11th in De Panne. He is a good bet for a Top10, maybe he will surprise as all.

Matti Breschel
It will be interesting to see how he can replace Cancellara. 15th at the Omloop in February, 7th in Gent-Wevelgem and even the third place in De Panne. Can he show what he can, now where he is the single leader of his squad?

img821.imageshack.us/img821/1633/stern.jpg
Björn Leukemans
He had no notable results 2010, but he is a belgian rider and will fight for a good place here.

Martin Maaskant
Just like Breschel, he had luck that his captain is injured and that he get the chance to lead his team. Only 10th in De Panne. But maybe he can surprise, just like 2008 in Roubaix.

Sylvain Chavanel

Of course he is just the third leader of his team, but he had a fantastic year, 2nd in Down Under, 11th in Kuurne, 3rd in San Remo, 11th at the E3-Prijs and seventh in De Panne.

Lars Boom
An amazing March for him. 5th in the GC at P-N, 7th at Dwars door Vlaanderen, 7th at the E3-Prijs, 9th in Wevelgem and 6th at the Driedaagse. Quite good for the young dutchman, and makes him an interesting bet for a Top10.

Bernhard Eisel
He is not a rider for winning here, but after his 4th in Wevelgem, we do not underestimate him.

Gert Steegmans
Last, but hopefully not least, our leader. A victory in Kuurne, a second at Het Nieuwsblad (on normal) followed a 3rd at the E3-Prijs and a 5th in Wevelgem. He is not that good on hills, but with a bit luck, he make it in the front group, and with his sprint abilities...

RadioShack: Just like in Gent-Wevelgem. The only change ist the participation of Lance Armstrong, who take part today to get prepared for the cobbles at Arenberg.
The opposition: see above

Brugge - Meerbeke, 254,5 km
img185.imageshack.us/img185/5512/rondevanvlaanderenprofi.jpg

Team goals:
- Top 10 (Steegmans)

Favourites: see above
My tip: Of course Tom Boonen. Who elso?

the_hoyle
good luck with the ronde van Vlaanderen. i'm liking the new way of saying who the favourites are with the star system. is this going to be used with every race or just major protour?

I want to do that with stars at the most important classics (RvV, P-R, Amstel Gold, Flèche Wallone, L-B-L, Lombardia), the Grand Tours (Giro, TDF,Vuelta), the WC and maybe the more important NCs.

img177.imageshack.us/img177/5540/k2pcm0020.jpg
Welcome to the market in Brugge, the start of the most important race in Belgium, maybe of the whole world, de Ronde van Vlaanderen!

img834.imageshack.us/img834/7775/k2pcm0021.jpg
Here the BOTD: Valerio Agnoli (Liquigas), Benjamin Gourgue (Landbouwkrediet), Vladimir Efimkin (AG2R), Brice Feillu (Vacansoleil), Luke Roberts (Milram), Timothy Duggan (Garmin), Angelo Furlan (Lampre) and Chris Froome (Sky).

img684.imageshack.us/img684/7900/k2pcm0022.jpg
The peloton at one of the predigious hellingen of the ronde van vlaanderen, de Oude Kwaremont.

img139.imageshack.us/img139/4083/k2pcm0023.jpg
At Eikenberg, the peloton had almost caught the breakaway.

img109.imageshack.us/img109/4694/k2pcm0024.jpg
45,6km to go, the breakaway is passed, we have now a front group with 43 rider, including all the favourites and Grégory Rast, Sébastien Rosseler and Gert Steegmans.

img258.imageshack.us/img258/6697/k2pcm0025.jpg
More and more rider can not hold the contact with the front group. 32 rider left. We get in the interesting part of the race...

img713.imageshack.us/img713/3681/k2pcm0026.jpg
We reached the Kapelmuur, and attack from Tom Boonen, Philippe Gilbert Juan-Antonio Flecha and Heinrich Haussler. Bad luck for them, they did not came away.

img834.imageshack.us/img834/5232/k2pcm0027.jpg
That is the situation before the Bosberg: Gilbert, Haussler and Devolder in front; Breschel, Boonen, Flecha and Leukemans +26"; Group Steegmans +46".

img826.imageshack.us/img826/3109/k2pcm0028.jpg
But at the Bosberg, they come together again, and then a strong attack by Stijn Devolder! Is that his third victory here?
Devolder; +11" Breschel, Flecha; +26" Group Steegmans.

img101.imageshack.us/img101/2721/k2pcm0029.jpg
But no chance, Omega Pharma and Rabobank set pacemakers in the front and caught them. 5 kilometers to go, no attacks in the group, it looks like a sprint will decide the Ronde van Vlaanderen.

img202.imageshack.us/img202/1338/k2pcm0030.jpg
2200m to the line, and the sprint begin. Gert Steegmans could recover himself from the hills and is well positioned, can he make the big surprise?

img826.imageshack.us/img826/9348/k2pcm0031.jpg
800m! Pozatto and Boom in front, but both get slower, while Gert now accelerate and make his final move!

img155.imageshack.us/img155/5765/k2pcm0032.jpg
AND YES! GERT STEEGMANS MAKES THE BIG SURPRISE and win de RONDE VAN VLAANDEREN 2010!

img183.imageshack.us/img183/4044/k2pcm0033.jpg
Lance cames in as 50th, 9 minutes down.

Great win with Steegmans.
Is my next race, too. And the first time that I can try my Ronder version in this career, last season was still the Cyanide version.
But hope it`s more selective than with 10 riders in first group.
