Stage 1
Opening stage is 20km long team time trial, nightmare for whole ASA team. Our goal is minimize time loss as much as possible.
21 CarmioOro - A-Style + 1'43
191. F.Tizza
192. A.Aulas
193. L.Beuret
194. P.Brousse
195. D.Colli
196. J.Kocjan
197. D.Tamayo
198. F.Terrenzio
One of the WC holder, without any real chances to make any big result here.
20 Acqua & Sapone - Caffé Mokambo + 1'32
11. S.Garzelli
12. D.Andriotto
13. M.Codol
14. R.Marzoli
15. F.Masciarelli
16. D.Milán
17. D.Ortega
18. G.Palumbo
19. L.Pierfelici
Our main goal is hard, but not impossible: get a podium place with Garzelli. Secondary goals are to fight fo jersey in young riders competition (F.Masciarelli), maybe KOM jersey (Codol??) or stage win(s).
19 Lampre - N.G.C + 1'28
21. M.Bruseghin
22. D.Cunego
23. A.Furlan
24. E.Gasparotto
25. F.Gavazzi
26. D.Loosli
27. M.Marzano
28. Man.Mori
29. P.Tiralongo
One of the strongest team here, with Bruseghin, Cunego and Tiralongo. Will they good enough to make some big result?
18 Barloworld + 1'19
71. J.M.Soler
72. F.Bellotti
73. G.Cheula
74. F.Cárdenas
75. C.Froome
76. D.Impey
77. P.Longo Borghini
78. M.Merlo
79. C.Scognamiglio
This is team about especially one man - Mauricio Soler. I´m wondering if he will concentrate for KOM jersey or GC.
17 CSF Group - Navigare + 1'07
161. D.Pozzovivo
162. F.Baliani
163. A.Bisolti
164. R.Bongiorno
165. T.Dall'Antonia
166. M.Frapporti
167. M.Gaia
168. M.A.Richeze
169. E.Zen
TOP 10 overall for Pozzovivo is real prediction. But he will probably suffer and lost much time in long ITT.
16 Miche - Silver Cross - Selle Italia + 1'01
101. P.Niemiec
102. E.Carvajal
103. M.Giunti
104. A.Moletta
105. P.Muto
106. M.Palandri
107. S.Saracini
108. K.Szczawinski
109. F.A.Valentini
We´ll probably see Miche riders in many breaks, but any good result is unlikely.
15 Team Milram + 54
201. R.Scholz
202. T.Fothen
203. R.Förster
204. S.Knaven
205. C.Kux
206. M.Müller
207. D.Roels
208. W.Stroetinga
209. P.Wrolich
According to very weak sprinter field here, they could make some successes in mass sprint.
14 Ceramica Flaminia - Bossini Docce + 54
171. G.Caruso
172. A.D'Aniello
173. V.Duma
174. M.Gentili
175. L.Giordani
176. M.Khalilov
177. B.Riccio
178. E.Rossi
179. L.Sestili
Breaks and sprints, this will be their main goals.
13 Euskaltel - Euskadi + 51
61. I.Antón
62. A.Galdos
63. M.Irizar
64. I.Isasi
65. E.Martínez
66. J.J.Oroz
67. R.Pérez
68. A.Pérez
69. A.Txurruka
Igor Anton here? He could make good result if he is in good shape.
12 Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni - Androni Giocattoli + 49
111. G.Simoni
112. A.Bertolini
113. M.Gavazzi
114. F.Ginanni
115. L.Á.Maté
116. L.Moser
117. M.Scarponi
118. J.Serpa
119. L.Solari
Simoni, Scarponi, Ginanni...strong team.
11 AG2R La Mondiale + 47
31. T.Valjavec
32. J.Arrieta
33. A.Clerc
34. M.Elmiger
35. S.Goubert
36. B.Kadri
37. R.Mandri
38. L.Mondory
39. R.Nocentini
Tadej Valjavec is one of the main contenders for GC, Rinaldo Nocentini could make some great results as well.
10 Silence - Lotto + 47
151. C.Wegelius
152. M.Aerts
153. C.Brandt
154. W.Cretskens
155. G.Gardeyn
156. P.Gilbert
157. J.Ljungblad
158. M.Lloyd
I will bet my underpants taht Gilbert will take at least one stage win here. Someone interested?
9 Liquigas + 46
1. F.Pellizotti
2. I.Basso
3. K.Carlström
4. M.Fischer
5. E.Franzoï
6. J.Guarnieri
7. A.Noè
8. F.Sabatini
9. O.Zaugg
And here they are, Franco Pellizotti and Ivan Basso, main contenders for overall win. It would be huge surprise if Liquigas won´t celebrate after last stage.
8 LPR Brakes Farnese Vini + 41
181. D.Pietropolli
182. L.Bernucci
183. C.Cucinotta
184. G.Ermeti
185. R.Ferrari
186. J.Golcer
187. S.Marinangeli
188. F.Negri
189. A.Ongarato
Nothing much to say about, maybe succesfull break is the right way to make good result for LPR.
7 Quick·Step + 37
81. C.Barredo
82. D.Cataldo
83. A.Engels
84. K.Hovelynck
85. K.Hulsmans
86. D.Malacarne
87. B.Samoilau
88. H.Schwab
89. J.Van de Walle
Interesting line-up, but without top ambitions.
6 Rabobank s.t.
141. L.Ten Dam
142. M.Ardila
143. L.Boom
144. T.Leezer
145. K.Moerenhout
146. B.Mollema
147. N.Nuyens
148. B.Tankink
149. J.Van Emden
They will concentrate for partial goals, probably some stage wins both in sprint or succesfull breakaway.
5 Team Katusha + 30
131. E.Petrov
132. A.Botcharov
133. P.Brutt
134. M.Ignatiev
135. S.Ivanov
136. A.Markov
137. L.Mazzanti
138. F.Pozzato
139. N.Trussov
Same case as Rabobank, Pozzato or Ivanov will be seen for sure in stages with intermidiate profile.
4 Team Saxo Bank + 29
91. J.Fuglsang
92. L.Y.Bak
93. J.J.Haedo
94. A.Lund
95. J.McCartney
96. A.Rasmussen
97. C.A.Sörensen
98. N.Sörensen
99. J.Van Goolen
J.Fuglsang as team leader will be probably main rival for F.Masciarelli in battle for best youn man in field. Saxo also has riders with interesting climbing (C.A.Sorensen) and sprinting (J.J.Haedo) potential.
3 Team Columbia - HTC + 18
51. M.Monfort
52. M.Barry
53. B.Grabsch
54. C.Lewis
55. M.Pinotti
56. M.Possoni
57. F.Rabon
58. M.Renshaw
59. M.Sieberg
Biggest favourite for winning in opening stage failed. Monfort could secure TOP10 place overall, some stage wins are also possible.
2 Garmin - Slipstream + 16
121. R.Hesjedal
122. S.Cozza
123. J.Dean
124. H.Dekkers
125. D.Martin
126. D.Millar
127. D.Pate
128. T.Peterson
129. D.Zabriskie
Another team with several outstanding time trialist is aiming for partial goals. One is gone, but 20 stages are still ahead of us.
1 Caisse d'Epargne 24'43
41. L.L.Sánchez
42. D.Arroyo
43. A.Charteau
44. J.I.Gutiérrez
45. V.Kiryienka
46. A.Losada
47. D.Moreno
48. F.Pérez
49. X.Zandio
Big warning from Caisse to all: we are here and are very very strong! Although they have no real superstar in their squad here, they are very strong overall. L.L.Sanchez will be probably set as their leader, however we could see F.Perez in pink jersey on start of stage 2.
1 Caisse d'Epargne 24'43
2 Garmin - Slipstream + 16
3 Team Columbia - HTC + 18
4 Team Saxo Bank + 29
5 Team Katusha + 30
6 Rabobank s.t.
7 Quick·Step + 37
8 LPR Brakes Farnese Vini + 41
9 Liquigas + 46
10 Silence - Lotto + 47
11 AG2R La Mondiale s.t.
12 Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni - Androni Giocattoli + 49
13 Euskaltel - Euskadi + 51
14 Ceramica Flaminia - Bossini Docce + 54
15 Team Milram s.t.
16 Miche - Silver Cross - Selle Italia + 1'01
17 CSF Group - Navigare + 1'07
18 Barloworld + 1'19
19 Lampre - N.G.C + 1'28
20 Acqua & Sapone - Caffé Mokambo + 1'32
21 CarmioOro - A-Style + 1'43
Although startlist could be a bit stronger, I hope we´ll enjoy upcoming 3 weeks and see exciting battles from beginning to the end. Stay tuned! |

thanks...Pellizotti and Basso are clear #1 and #2...but if I want to reach podium, I must defeat some more strong riders, not only Gibo and LLS...and don´t forget that Caisse has much stronger team

his chances aren´t high, but maybe he could surprise? it´s hard to say atm

Francesco Masciarelli is training with famous Italian climber Claudio Chiappucci, so he simply must be good in mountains!
Actually I have checked him in DB after his sudden pop several weaks ago and his peak seems to be up to 81 or even 82, dunno remember exactly. |

Stage 2
Mostly flat stage with very small hills shortly before finish will fit especially to puncheurs, but any time gaps aren´t likely.
Several riders went down few km before finish line, e.g. Caruso, leader of Ceramica Flaminia...
...and Paolo Tirangolo! Two of bigger guns are loosing much time from beginning.
Pippo Pozzato takes stage victory in sprint ahead of Ginanni and Nocentini! Fran Perez still keeps pink jersey, Garzelli and Masciarelli both finished safely in the pack.

Stage 3
Very similar stage, only about 50km longer.
One man is struggling far behind peloton...Domenico Pozzovivo! He lost some time in both previous stages, when he couldn´t keep pace until finish. He was probably injured and haven´t made fully recovered before Giro. In all case, one of potential contenders is out of game.
Final sprint and Pozzato wins again! His second win was really close, Gilbert almost fill my pre-race prediction today. Cunego finished third. Due to bonifications, Pippo is new race leader! But tomorrow we´ll face to first mountains and is very likely we could celebrate new pink jersey holder after stage 4.

This is a very good story and keep the fine results up! I hope Garzelli can end in top 3 and that might be possible if Basso and Pelli can't figure things out

Looking very much forward for the upcoming mountain stages!
But would like to ask about how good L.L Sanchez is in climbing because he got like you mentioned a great team behind him + a strong ITT

thanks to all!!!
ad Garzelli - he started his season in April, so he raced 11 days before Giro
ad LL Sanchez - he is better time trialist than Garzelli and only slightly worse climber...but Garzelli would be in great shape through all race + it´s his favourite race - there could be big difference between both contenders
now back to race
Stage 4
As mentioned before, we will climb first time. First climb (much harder one), Croce d´Aune will welcome riders after more than 100km of flat terrain. Second climb, San Martino di Castrozza, is longer, but less steep. Since this is not decisive stage of race, our tactics is to ride easy and try to save as much as energy possible for hardest climbs. But it can change for sure if I feel opportunity to take stage win.
BOTD, including Nuyens, Froome or Golcer, has almost 6' advantage over P. at the foot of first climb.
Ivan Basso sets tempo in front, looks like Pellizotti is clear leader of Liquigas team.
Malacarne reaches the summit as first.
Peloton contains less than 100 riders atm and is about 2'45" back. Basso made his job well here.
Final climb, 10km to go...Igor Anton attacks! He has early escapees in sight.
Marzio Bruseghin launches attack...
...Arroyo followed him and both are joining Anton in front with less than 5 km before line.
They were quickly caught, but Anton attacks immediately again!
Valjavec is next...
...and he is followed by Pellizotti! Where is Garzelli?
Here, right after Nocentini!
Meanwhile, Pellizotti and Valjavec joined Anton, but Franco is not satisfied and keeps attacking!
Ivan Basso goes over Garzelli, that guy must be in super shape!
Last kilometer for Pellizotti...
...and he wins in first mountain stages and takes maglia rosa from Pozzato!
Anton finishes 2nd before Valjavec.
Garzelli could keep with Basso until finish and finished as 5th, 36" behind winner.
