To call this a rebuild would be an understatement. Let's see how many riders from last season will stay in the end, but with your availability list it probably won't be that many. Maybe a Belgian veteran hybrid puncheur could come in handy
I can see why you released Chiarello, with him declining and wanting a paycheck for his CT domination there probably wouldn't have been a market for him anyway.

A brave move for sure, but we have seen this kind of complete rebuild work in the past. Given just how central Chiarello was to your success last year, I don't see what other realistic options were open to you. For me, the availability of JPP is the most interesting thing though, I'm sure we will talk come transfers.

Welcome back, Jarrad!
Jarrad Drizners
25 | Maxed | 50,000 | Crabbe since 2021 FL | MO | HI | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FT | DH | PL | 72 | 63 | 75 | 63 | 73 | 73 | 67 | 61 | 73 | 78 | 74 | 67 | 66 |
We took Jarrad on loan in our first year. The year after we signed him in free agency. After a loan spell to Amaysim in 2023, he was ready for his first maxed year in 2024. Unfortunately we couldn't work it out at the end of last season, but luckily we managed to sign him without much competition. Our Australian will be looking to provide some depth points in the hills.
Welcome back, Jarrad!
---
Goodbye Mr. Chiarello & co!
With this post we also say goodbye to a number of riders who could not be convinced in free agency.
William Chiarello was priority #1 on our list, but he is moving to fellow PCT Llapi-Vita for a whopping €300,000. This is in line with what our superstar asked for in the negotiations, but unfortunately we could not offer him this despite the efforts of co-sponsor Caloi. We're forever grateful for his wonderful season. No doubt he'll remain the most efficient rider in our team's history.
Emils Liepins quickly found shelter with Tafjord Kraft, also a fellow PCT team. €100,000 seems like a fair price to me, but we had other sprinters in mind. Felix English (Ethiopian Airlines) and Maani Altanzul (Zain - Omaintel) are preparing for an extended stay in CT.
Best of luck guys!

First leaders signed
After we missed out on Chiarello (as mentioned above), we quickly turned our attention to other riders on the FA market. Especially Tim Wellens took our attention as he grew up in the same town as the manager. Also his demands got out of control and we went looking for prospects in other teams.
First we reached an agreement with Trans Looney Tunes for Kyeng Ho Min. The stage racer isn't a world beater, but the Korean performed at a very consistent level throughout the season, as you can see below. With his age being 28, he has some years to give to the team which is definitely an upside.
This deal with Trans Looney Tunes developed quickly into a package deal, as we also bought Lilian Calmejane. He had some excellent results in the one day races like GP Wallonie, Grands Prix Cycliste and Japan Cup last season. We're sure he'll make an impact for us in the hilly races. We paid € 900,000 for both.
Then we turned our attention once more to the FA market for a co-leader in the stage races, next to newly signed Kyeng Ho Min. Our first option was Richard Carapaz, who rode for us in the last PCT stint. He was also highly demanded, so we turned to another South American: good old Nairo Quintana will help us out for one more season.

Min is still overpaid, but should get another significant wage drop next year. Calmejane is a proved commodity. Quintana is the odd man out here, though I'd hope he can at least perform up to his low wage.

Chinese and sprinter alert
Another big goal this offseason was securing a lead sprinter (or two). Groves was the top option, but his wage quickly got out of hand. Finally we reached an agreement with Jiankun Liu, the 29-year old from China. Due to an administrative error, he didn't race at all last season. So he is eager to show his skills in this upcoming season.
Later in the transfer season we also secured a second sprinter with Enzo Wouters. The Belgian 28-year old was also high on our list after finishing 2nd and 3th in a Giro d'Italia stage and 4th in a ToNE stage. He will get a lot of opportunities to score , avoiding Liu a lot of the time. Frenchman Axel Zingle is the third sprinter of the team, he'll get some minor opportunities to score.
We also dearly wanted to sign a Belgian talent to develop in the coming years. Unfortunately we missed out on De Lie (high demands) and Thibau Nys, tough the latter at the very last minute before signing. After this painful event, we decided to go for Sun Changsheng. A (minor) stage racer who we hope to develop in the coming years.

Well done with these signing. You should be strong in both mountains and sprints with these final signings. Was looking at Sun myself. Just the statcombo every team needs a couple of guys with :-)

Crazy to me Wouters became such a hot commodity. All those years ago he was a stag of mine, and I let him go for nothing. DB deflation really working here as he indeed looks like a very solid secondary sprinter now.

Liu hopefully performs well for you after a year of enjoying life doing nothing, and he should be a good mentor for Changsheng as well, even though they're obviously different riders. I like Wouters as a second sprinter and I imagine the sponsors like that signing as well!

Petr Vakoc and co
After the signing of Calmejane, we thought we had ended our hills department with Edmondson, Calmejane and Drizners as most important ones. That proved to be wrong. First we had some conversations with Tryg about Hoelgaard. Eventually the Norwegian signed for Cedevita in PT.
After that, we got a great offer from Jura GIANTS loaning in Fabio Christen, taking 160,000 of his cap and getting a 510,000 fee in return. We're very proud to develop the Swiss sprinter in the first years of his pro career. With that Christen fee, we could convince Petr Vakoc to swap ISA-Hexacta for our Belgian squad. Unfortunately we had to give up Joshua Edmondson who was very valuable for our team last season. But when you can sign a star like that, that's an obvious choice to make. Especially when they are both declining next season.
Furthermore we had some talks with Cedevita. Lawson Craddock was on the table for a long time, but eventually we took over Geoffrey Bouchard for the minimum fee to strengthen our climbing department. We hope he can both support Quintana and Min and he can go for himself in breakaway stages or KOM.

Cobbles and Swedes
For our cobbles department we quickly decided to just add two depth pieces for this season. We think both Marzuki and Vanbilsen can provide some minor points in the classics, next to Sameera Chatarunga who was already with us last season.
Our TT department is non-existent this season. We couldn't find a good leader in the offseason. We only decided to swap Fabio Van Den Bossche for Wout Van Aert, a prologue specialist.
To finalize our roster, we bought Hannes Bergstrom Frisk from Evonik - ELKO for stage race support. Additionally we added two stagiaires to our team. First one is a fellow Swede: Edvin Lovidius, who can help us in the hills department. The other one is a Brazilian (finally!): Vinicius Rangel. He was already a stagiaire last year with Zwift Pro Cycling. A sweetener for our sponsor Caloi after missing out on both Chiarello and young prospect Malacarne.

| Bring in Arnaud De Lie or Thibau Nys as level 1 talent | Failed | | Re-sign William Chiarello as free agent | Failed | | Build a squad that has a shot at avoiding relegation | Succeeded |
We didn't manage to sign a Belgian top tier talent or resign William Chiarello, as previously stated. We did try to mould a team that could compete in PCT though.
In our last stint 2 years ago, we were doomed to relegate from the start. Even though Eislers and Küng overperformed, we weren't even close. We're glad that we have better hopes this time around. The team has set the goal before to the season to 2,050 points.

It was certainly nice to get Vakoc for the price you did. Not sure how he'll mesh with Calmejane though. Also three sprinters is quite a lot. You probably need some clever planning to get the best out of most of the riders.

Without Chiarello, gaday and Livins this looks completely different. There are some riders with impressive skills but to me it also looks like all of them have their little flaws. Vakoc and Liu look still impressive but we never know how sprinters and puncheur will work this season.
I hope the absence of your stars from last year will hurt your season too much. Best Luck for the new season!

Liu, Wouters and Zingle. What a train!
I will forgive you for taking Changsheng from me, if you max him the right way and lose his agent’s phone number in a couple of seasons.
I like the direction you’ve taken in your initial PCT push, but as others have said, you’ll need some good planning to get the best out of this roster. Good luck!

Well, let's hope that Quintana really broke his unlucky streak of relegating teams last year Before Carlsberg stayed up with him in 2023, he went down with Rakuten in 2020 (-> Voyagin), then with my team in 2021, and with Volcanica (-> Manada) in 2022... I sure hope he'll still get some solid points for you!
But I wouldn't be surprised to see Min rather clearly outscore Nairo, if you send him to the right races. Really like his look, except for that low acceleration which might hold him back a little.
Calmejane is cool, but as red mentioned, him and Vakoc might interfere with each other, as they're really similar. Clever planning needed I guess
Liu should be eager to resume racing after a forced one-year break, and your secondary sprinters look fine as well.
However, I could sadly still see you struggle a bit, not having a TTer at all, and both Chatarunga and Vanbilsen not being top-tier cobblers. You do have some really nice riders though, like Marzuki or Bergstrom, who - if well planned - could contribute bigger than you'd expect them to.
Good luck anyway, and hopefully you'll be able to stay up this time
