Meh. Guess I have to look forward to Stage 3 and beyond given how Boev went here.

I can confirm that Van Heerden was busy at the opening of the Eritrean branch nightclub of team sponsor Boogie. He was "occupied" until the early hours of the morning.
Happy to see Guave take a good win

Thanks everybody!
Didn't really see it happen when entering the final kilometer, but Coutinho must have had a good day.
Up until now our lead-out failed to produce or came about too early. This time Groves apparently timed it just right, although a lot of work still had to be done. Obviously very happy with the result!
Thanks Gustav for the report!

Good to see Coutinho get a stage win

Just checked the replay: he was spent after chasing the whole day at the head of the pack and lost contact around the 10km mark. Sorry for leaving that out.
Thanks for that info. Great job, team... Well, I guess they'll do more of the same on stage 2 - hopefully the result will be a bit more satisfying.

Better from AKA, 2nd is a good result. Like I predicted, it was more from random luck than any logical proceedings. The shuffle gives, and the shuffle takes. At least we get a few points; others weren't so lucky.
This thing where a random number of sprinters just break away from the pack and leave everyone else behind for no reason is getting really tiresome and is kind of game breaking. There's zero explanation for the yellow jersey not staying on the wheels as that gap goes, and 58 seconds is a gigantic margin. It's not too consequential here, but in flat stage races, it's gonna destroy some GC's.
Time for the mountains at least. Hoping Warbasse can stick with the big guns, and we'll see how Fabbro does too after a poor Tachira.

Well, we’ll all fall victim to this kind of developments during sprints and my team had been spared so far so we’ll just take it. Our presence was strong at one point but apparently not strong enough.
Quiet day for us tomorrow probably, Khodayari being our best shot at breakaway succes.

Well that was a very pleasant Hollowayesque piece of sprinting by Keough. Which is fitting for McCormick's first non-NC win by a rider other than Holloway.
This race, so far, we seem to be on the blessed side of the sprint AI gods and given the next stage the curse of the yellow jersey sprinter isn't relevant.
Agree with the observation that the straight, wide roads might be causing the pack to break up. It happened occasionally last year but seems worse this year. Also think the easy endings encourage the way too early lead outs.
Thanks for the reports.

At least Boev tried, which is good too see. Probably went too far out instead getting a wheel and ran out of energy.
Looking forward to the next stage, as that'll probably tell how we do in this race.
Thanks for the reports And congrats to Guave and Ulrich for the first two stages!

I'm a bit surprised that my team is ton first place after the first two stages and today they will be on the bottom haha
I hope Pogačar and Venter can do something today and tomorrow. Pogi definitely close to the top 3 if it will be possible in U25clasification and Venter higher in Kom clasi.
Good luck to others.

The sprinting AI has been doing strange things indeed, looking at those inexplicable gaps. I've had it happen in my races as a reporter several times as well. I wasn't here last year, so can't compare it with anything else of course.
Still many congratulations to Ulrich! Happy for him to see one of his "provisional" leaders perform, and score him some nice points. For Los Pollos it was a stage to forget once again, nobody in the breakaway and Guillén not in the top-8 (or top-10) of the sprint, even though, his positioning seemed to be quite alright. Except for one second place in a C2 stage, he never managed a top-8, so I guess i won't need to expect a lot of points from him this season, even though that already became clear shortly after signing him and starting to understand the game then
Thank you for the report, Gustav. Looking forward to tonight's stage, which could be amazing for Marquez and the team, but I fear his stamina and hill capacities will hurt him again.

Alright, mountains down, and they were quite successful. No big gaps mean the race is still up for grabs, but we're in a good position for a decent spot.
The team worked quite well today it seemed, using domestiques to control the front while keeping Warbasse and Fabbro protected. The result is about the best we could hope for. I never expect Warbasse to have that great of a finishing kick, so that fact that he responded at all to take a podium is really nice to see. The time bonus and small gap are certainly helpful too. And unlike in Tachira, Fabbro seemed to relish his secondary role, coming home in the peloton comfortably.
Plus, AKA survived, which is a nice bonus. Maybe training his mountain by 1 actually did something. Who knows. At least he has the chance do do something on stage 5 now, if he is chosen to go for it.
Finally, I'm definitely enjoying Ranaweera's absence here for the U25 category. Fabbro will look good in white, and Eg and Gregaard look set to score as well. Nice bonus.
Looking ahead, the hilly stages should be good for us on paper, although it hasn't always played out that way. With the race wide open, any climber hybrid could make an attack stick and end up surging ahead. Nevertheless, we're in a decent spot. Keinath could easily hold this, but my dark horse is Pernsteiner. Saggiorato's success today might limit him, but staying in the group today was a huge victory because he can take time back on the hills if things go well.
Thanks for an awesome report. Great read, and the pacing/style choices were especially well done.
Congrats to Philips! Keinath has been killing it this year.

Wow, definitely didn't see that one coming! It's our best ever mountain stage result in terms of GC relevance (we did win one last year from a breakaway), which compensates Reinhardt's underperformance by far!
What's especially important is that Saggiorato - who first was forgotten in the preview - is a decent puncheur, too. But as bbl mentioned, Pernsteiner might now even be our leader, being among the top puncheurs in the peloton - which was of course what we were dreaming of, but it didn't seem too realistic.
But well, it's only half-time, so way too early to take anything for granted. Let's see what tomorrow's "reverse stage" brings - it would be a great moment for the first season win, right?
Thanks for the report. I was honestly surprised to see that many Centovalli jerseys up front, but did of course enjoy it - far more than the sprints. Although the result doesn't seem much less random, with Pinot even being dropped in the end...

Solid stuff from Kuss, 6th on the GC is great on paper but without gaps and given the hills aren't his friend expect that is the high water mark.
Nice to see McNulty in the break, maybe next year he will be strong enough to make it a more interesting adventure.
Thanks for the report and contracts to Keinath and Phillips.

Disappointing. I really hoped the acc-fighter combination would work out for Marquez as I have seen it work brilliantly on pcm15, but it doesn't seem to be the right combo for this version. If he wanted to do well in the GC he should have won time today, as he is one of the worst puncheurs of the 20-ish still doing alright in the GC.
Petrovski did do a nice job though and with his 26th in GC he could score some minor points, which is nice, as our counter so far in Eritrea is still stuck at zero.
Congratulations to Abhishek and thank you for the report, Gustav. Except for the disappointment and heartbreak I felt during the last km's it was a very enjoyable one once again

Good stage for Frankiny, hopefully the Swiss Champion can continue to have a good race here and prove me right for selecting him to lead and leaving Ranaweera at home.

We've never been any climbing team really, so good entertainment to see the whole Europcar squad in the final peloton.
Can't believe we're still not leading the team rankings
Thank you so much for the really interresting report and I'm very much looking forward to the hilly stage |

Oh Nico
Well, that's a great way to start the last day of 2020! Keinath looked great in the screens from a long way out, staying at the front and then attacking when the time was right! Hopeful that his hill stat can not help him keep the jersey deep into the race.
Thanks for the report

Khodayari had me hoping for a minute there! Still nice to see him spice this race up like that.
