RACE TORQUAY RESULTS

A disappointing result for ZTE in the Race Torquay as they failed to get any riders in the Top 50. With 4 Chinese riders making up the train, it was left to experienced Americans Joyce and Haga to try and pull Danny Van Poppel to the win.

Unfortunately they all fell well short of expectations, leaving Lance Armstrong fuming in the post race press meet. "This isnt the level we expect, its a race where we can get something from it but all in all, im coming away from Australia having to re-think alot of things. At the end of the day, im Lance Armstrong and we wont give up on this project just because things have started this way"

COLOMBIAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Betancur and Uran Hit the Heights
Betancur is Colombian Champion after gruelling days racing

Movistars Carlos Alberto Betancur proudly stood alone as the Colombian National Champion as he edged out Rigoberto Uran, who was looking to collect the double after winning the ITT. Betancur had enough in the tank to edge out Uran and Lopez (Astana) after the trio dropped favourites Bernal and Quintana in the final km.

As mentioned ITT was won by EF Pro Cycling's Rigoberto Uran, he took the stage with a comfortable gap to Andrew Anacona (Arkea-Samsic).

Lance Armstrong would have kept a close eye on his riders Quintana and Henao, who both placed well over the 2 events as he will welcome their experience back into the ZTE fold once they hit Europe.

CADEL EVANS GREAT OCEAN ROAD RACE

Frantic Finish is Merliers
Belgian has the legs on competition

i.ibb.co/M2FT71J/cadel.png

Tim Merlier came out top in an exciting days racing as the teams and riders say goodbye to Australia as they make their way back towards Europe for the meat of the cycling calendar.

Excitement had mounted as Richie Porte one of the home town stars looked in a good spot to win the race, but he and his teammate Danny Van Poppel faded at the last, to leave the sprint open for Merlier to edge. After the race Merlier commented "Its great to leave Australia with this win, its important to get momentum early in the season for me and the team and this gives us that push forward"

So far its not been the return to racing that Armstrong had wanted, stating "Look we are happy to be leaving Australia. There have been some positives but we are not where we need to be as a team, both on the road and tactically. Ill be ironing some things out, we have time and ill state that we will compete and come out as one of the top teams this year"

Road to Redemption
Armstrong returns to European circuit; is all forgiven?

i.ibb.co/bJ7b9sP/lance.jpg

If there is anything cycling didnt expect, it would be the arrival of Lance Armstrong into Europe to once again take part (in a sense) within the cycling world. Since his appointment to manage the upstart Chinese team ZTE-Toyota, his return has been seen from afar, with everyone in the Southern Hemisphere to open the calendar.

Now the reality is about to kick in, the man who many believed disgraced the sport will be returning to its spiritual home... it may not be the Tour de France (yet) but ZTE will arrive in Spain to take on the Volta A La Comunitat Valenciana and Armstrong will be right there with them.

Before departing for Spain, Armstrong said "Look people will make a big deal of this and im sure there will be bigger fusses to come. But lets take the facts at face value, im not banned, ive served my time, everything that needed to come out has done. Im here to do a job, here to right a few wrongs and pass on the experience I have as a rider to my team"

No matter what he says or does, there isnt going to be much leverage for him in many circles. ZTE-Toyota opened the biggest can of worms in world sport and now they will have to just deal with the fall out, as its not even begun to spill out.

VOLTA A LA COMUNITAT VALENCIANA

Nibali Shines in Spain
ZTE prove their worth; Armstrong delighted

i.ibb.co/JqjpHFm/voltazte.png

Italian Vincenzo Nibali rises to the opening challenge in Europe by winning in Spain as he held off a strong challenge from Astana's Omar Fraile and the Colombian Nairo Quintana of ZTE.

Nibali made the most of his experience and a strong Trek-Segafredo lineup to squeeze out a +26' win, holding off surges from his rivals as Trek refused to let either Astana or ZTE carve out a position where by they could win.

i.ibb.co/K92dsqD/nibwin.png

Speaking to the press after the race, Nibali said "It has been a nice way for us as a team to get back into Europe, the stages have given us a nice ride and tactically everything worked out as we planned every day. Winning always feels good and thats how we hope the season will work out for us"

i.ibb.co/7GCXn2L/team.png

Although ZTE will be a little disappointed that they were unable to position Quintana for a win in the final stage, the will be happy with claiming the overall team win, a fine effort for a strong roster of riders that was ably led by Armstrong over the 5 days of racing.

PETRONAS Le Tour de Langkawi

Van Poppel Thrives in Malaysia
5 stage wins for ZTE man

i.ibb.co/VQ4Y0f2/dvpop.png

Danny Van Poppel headlined not only ZTE-Toyota but the race as he led a predominantly Asian team into Malaysia hoping to help raise the profile of the Chinese cycling outfit.

Fortunately he proved his value, winning 5 of the 8 stages with ease, unfortunately it wasnt enough to win the Tour as the mountain stages took their toll on the Dutch ace. However he comes away from Malaysia with a much needed confidence boost and will join up with the man roster back in Europe after his exploits in Asia.
