Bevin crashed heavily at the end of the stage, along with other riders, and has been sent to hospital for some x-rays. Caleb Ewan originally won the stage but his victory was annulled due to a headbutt on Philippsen, who, eventually, was awarded the win.

Was thinking exactly the same, apart from my new name being Richie Hill. 
Great start to the season again for Guerreiro, hopefully he'll be less invisible during the rest of the year now.

Great being able to see the pros here in Australia for a few weeks of the year. Although I wish they'd share the TDU around to others states. We have some awesome hills in Victoria! Definitely packing my bike next year. |

Richie flew it up - outsmarting SKY guys.
But wtf, come on Jarlinson Pantano. Please stop disappointing me every time. I would expect him to be the last man standing for Porte. But probably it wont happen again. Porte will have a very poor support in TDF in Trek. Mollema will be weak again, Pantano has not delivered proper result since spring 2017 and then Stetina well.....
Then just Ciccone has to step up - but this wont happen probably this season. And then there is basically none climber left.
Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.

Nah Trek doesn't have anyone to support Porte except for Mollema and Ciccione, but Mollema will need leadership (for the sake of team results really) and Ciccione needs a fitting race pretty much.. otherwise Porte won't have any support in the mountains surrounded by other teams, and his team is NOT "the strongest he's ever had in TDU" as he suggested.
Still good stage, loved it, and Guerreiro again in the Top10 suiting result, nice!

Yes you are right. BMC was definitely stronger than this Trek squad.
Porte will be on his own against the best in mountains this season (and in TDF sa well considering he will pass stage 9)

Is this any different to past years. Porte when fit was basically left to himself in TdF mountains with BMC in 2016. Bit of a common theme (Cadel also had poor mountain support) do they just not respect Australian GC riders? |

I think you're overestimating them, you can't build a team around 2nd tier stage racers. I mean, both of them have 1 GT win combined and it was only at the age of 34. It's not like Froome, Contador or even Quintana who showed enough to prove that they can build a team around them.
Besides, BMC has always been more of a classics team with guys like GVA, Gilbert, Ballan, Hushovd.

Fair point you make. Both guys who didn't reach potential until far later in their careers and were not touted as GC riders from a young age. From 2007 to 2010 however Cadel was right up there barring bad luck and again, what seemed like incoherent teams. Wiggins also in this boat, clearly not a typical GC rider, but with a team behind him he was able to pinch a tour victory. |

I think Cadel Evans was very great stage racer (and very versatile rider) despite only 1 TDF win. He came pretty late to cycling. Considering he hadnt had so much badluck he could have had more GT wins than just one (well he finished 2x second).
But I just wanted to say that I really dont understand Trek strategy. Its really like home for veteran riders  But more importantly, they do not have any proper climber on form who could support their GC riders. And yes you are right BMC was very similar in this (but recent years at least Caruso has been performing).

Biniyam Ghirmay, 18 year old Eritrean rider and one of few able to beat Remco Evenepoel last year, has won today's stage at the Tropicale Amissa Bongo. Interesting to follow this young African talent, he had a very solid campaign in 2018 and though the level of competition is far from the best, still notable. Reminds me of Salim Kipkemboi, who then, though, disappeared from the radar after an incredible month of January.

fun fact, Ghirmay was the first rider born in the 21st century to win a UCI race, pretty cool as he has beaten solid PCT competition.

Gaviria's first race and first win with Team UAE at San Juan. Pretty good season start for the team with a good momentum to keep the ghosts of 2018 away. |
