Thanks a lot, sammyt!

Some good points by you. Youth Intake is one of the most important points in this kind of save so i will definitely post them. Will come in the next update. Not sure how i will keep track of their development - i guess i will include it in end of season updates or perhaps i use the youth intake date for an annual development update. Or i include them in the end of season update. Not sure yet - will take a look once i write down the updates for next season.

The squad will need to see some serious changes for mext season. Lots of players have an expiring contract and i wont renew them because they are not really suited to the new league and most loan players return to their teams. i have like 10 plaxers left to play some kind of role which means i need like 5-6 new starters and lots of new depth. Due to the number of moves i will likely split it up into several posts. Next couple of posts will probably be:

1. final league table & youth intake
2. serie c rules
3. Transfers out
4. Transfers in & intended starting 11 & season expectations

I would personally prefer a next season expectations at the end of the season review post to make it clearer how much transfers strengthened the squad and if that and the preseason in general went according to plan or if things changed, e.g. missed targets, found a bargain etc.

i think i prefer posting season expectations in the final preseason post but i probably will play a bit with how i include it until i find a way that works for me. Generally i intend to this rough structure for seasons:

(- rules in a new division)
- transfers (depending on how many moves there are in one post or two) & season expectations
- winter update (competitions & transfers)
- youth intakes
- end of season
- player performance report

Extra posts for playoffs / cup finals / etc or other special occasions ofc included as well.

Every couple of years (perhaps after every world cup?) I will give a short overview about the rest of the football world. Who won the CL and the major leagues etc.

Chapter 5End of Season & Youth Intake2016/17
"Promotion“

i.imgur.com/3NnHaQj.png

As some of you might have already seen in the stats of the different players, our dominant offense leads us to a comfortable promotion. The final table could have looked even more impressive if we would have won more than two of our final nine games. Promotion never looked in danger as the team dominated the league. This has been the only goal for this season and we’re excited to have achieved that.

Next stop: Serie C. The plan has to be to quickly get to Serie B to further improve our financial situation. Back-to-back promotions cannot be expected although I want to try to get as close as possible so that with a good string of results the sensation might be possible. It’s probably more realistic to aim for promotion in two or three years. My personal minimum goal for next season is the upper half of the league table. I will continue to heavily rely on loans to get there with the occasional free transfer – especially from our affiliate Cesena who promoted to Serie A which is great news for us. A lot of players have expiring contracts which i really appreciate in this situation as we can fill their spaces with better players. I’ll go into that in further detail in the next updates.

i.imgur.com/CgWZPZQ.png

A quick look at the national team: I'm lazy for once and summarize the year 2017 instead of cropping the information together from two screens for the 2016/17 season: After six losses in 2016 without scoring a single goal San Marino won the second game in NT history in 2017. Midfielder Luca Tosi was the hero of the night with his first international goal. A look at his stats shows the urgency of improvement in terms of player quality.

The other matches were also surprisingly close. The match against Lithuania was only lost through a late goal (82. minute). One win and two goals, this season has to be considered a success for San Marino.

Youth Intake

In this kind of save the Youth Intake is possibly the most important day of the season so I will constantly be updating you about it each year. I'm quite happy with our first youth intake. I see three players that could turn into useful players which is much more than what i expected at this point. A couple more future NT players will be amongst them but that doesn’t mean much at this point. I’m very happy about this talent class.

i.imgur.com/7neVUen.png

Carnevale (i love that name) is a very promising Italian fullback. Good pace, a nice personality, solid technique and tackling. He's definitely the most promising looking talent out of this class and I would hope he turns into a Serie B regular at least. If only he would be Sanmarinese!

i.imgur.com/HKZVQfs.png

Giovagnoli is the best Sanmarinese player in this class and I'm probably not too optimistic when I'm saying that he will definitely be a national team regular at some point. I think that he is already better than most current NT players. His mental stats are great and should help him develop into at the very least a solid Serie C player. Personality and determination are looking ugly but I'll try to tutor that a bit. Due to his Italian secondary nationality it might take a while until he joins the national team but eventually, he'll get there.

i.imgur.com/tTtfqxZ.png

Laghi is also a Sanmarinese defensive mid. He looks worse than Giovagnoli as he has some major red flags with his pace, off the ball/positioning, concentration and technique but if the talent evaluation of my staff is at least decently accurate he should also turn into a NT starter for quite some time. He also has that dreaded Italian second nationality which might let him wait until accepting the SMR invitation.

Nice update, is Palazzi still a star for the national team? He used t be one of the best players alongside Selva and Aldo Junior Simonici (GK) between FM12 - FM15 but I haven't owned a game between 15 to getting 18 when it came out so don't know if he is still good for them, I think he used to be a decent Serie D player, but this was back before Serie C got it's rework when there were 2 levels as part of it.

Carnevale looks like he has potential for your team but if you progress as quick as you are hoping then he would likely only be getting good enough to feature just as you are promoting to a level he can't really play.

It's a shame those 2 dual nationality players aren't fully Sammarinese, in previous versions they wouldn't accept a San Marino callup until age 24 which is a lot of game time that they miss out on when they would be useful to the national team, even if they will never get good enough for the club side and will be nowhere near good enough for Italy. Hopefully that has changed on your save and they realise Italy won't pick a player of their quality and they can start helping out the national team sooner.

Oh and is that European nations league thing in FM17? If so that should give the national team some extra fixtures they might get a result out of, but I'm not sure if that was new for FM18 or in the previous version.

Natt - I sure hope so - thanks for stopping by Pfft

sammyt - Yeah, Palazzi (stats in spoiler) is still one of the better starters for the NT. Guess he would still be a decent Serie D player but he plays in the Sanmarinese league for Tre Penne.

Spoiler
i.imgur.com/pRIGjM3.png

Dual nationality is still an issue. I think they mostly accept a callup with 22 if they havent earned a youth team cap previously. Some accept even earlier, some don't. Seems like a bit of luck is necessary for that. The dual nationality for the duo doesnt matter because both will probably never be good enough to play for Italy anyway and the NT won't get many results with or without them anyway.

European nations league is a thing in FM17 and will surely help to rise in the world rankings rather early Smile

Chapter 6Serie C League Rules2017/18
"Don't let drunk people decide promotion/relegation rules"

New league, new rules: Serie C is divided into three groups with 20 teams each. Only the top team promotes but 2nd to 10th qualify for promotion playoffs. Only the bottom team relegates directly while 16th to 19th will head into playouts. Further rules:

Squad registration
- Maximum of 16 over-23 players
- Teams are not allowed to sign non-EU players from abroad
- 12 subs named, 3 used
promotion/relegation rules
- 1st promotes directly
- 2nd to 10th of each group qualify for promotion playoffs
- promotion playoffs are played in a knockout tournament with 5 rounds and only the winner promotes to Serie B
- 16th to 19th qualify for playout
- Playout consists of one two-legged round and all losers relegate
- 20th relegates directly

Extra Time
# The promotion playoff system is absolute mad
# i love having so many players on the bench. perfect to develop talents. not that i have many yet
# no limitation of loan players in the match squads anymore allows me to continue being loan crazy
# we should aim for promotion playoffs - no matter how small the chances are to promote through them

Chapter 7Transfers Out2017/18
"More departures than the Berlin airport"

Promotion always means that a big challenge is ahead of us. Only the league winner promotes directly while 2nd to 10th qualify for playoff promotion. Promoting to Serie B would be a massive step forward for our mission so we will try to promote immediately.

This obviously means that we need to strengthen our team again. Lots of loans expired and those who took a close look at the contract details in previous screenshots saw that also many contracted riders had expiring contracts. The majority of these were not renewed and a couple more players who didn't match our expectations were sold:

i.imgur.com/DagfFje.png

Notable departures include our starting goalkeeper Andrea Dini and starting defender Marco Arrigoni. Leaving loan riders are not listed here. This leaves the following core of retained players:

i.imgur.com/lC3ZozK.png

Yes, these are all players who are remotely close to the first team at this point. This already includes Seminara, Ravanelli and Damian whose loans were already confirmed to be extended earlier. Renzetti, Gandelli and Fantini are not considered good enough to play any role in the team which means we need a lot players to replace all these departures. Instead of listing what we still need I'm gonna list what we have because it is much shorter: left backs, one starting CB, a good depth in central midfield (which won't stop me from further strengthening it) and a starting striker. Everything else will have to be added. There is a lot of work ahead of us to field a competitive team.

Chapter 8Transfers In2017/18
"The new team"

All those departures needed to be replaced and 17 new players were signed to get a better team capable of competing in the new division.

In this thread i will once again only post a couple of transfers. To be more exact: Only new signings that are intended as starters for the season. For a complete overview click the link below:

i.imgur.com/B3QkpxF.png

Calvarese is the player who is supposed to be our solution for the right full back role. A solid athlete with no weakness he should be a solid starter at this level. Signing a two year contract for 31k p/a he offers great value for us.

i.imgur.com/eR9hOnW.png

Pahor is a center back with good marking, tackling, positioning and aerial ability for this level. He is expected to earn a starting role for us. He signed a two year contract for 36k€ p/a.

i.imgur.com/WFNiS5y.png

After mostly playing slow playmakers on the wings last season we have signed a proper winger in 28y old Marco Ilari who signed a three year contract for 44k p/a. He has good pace, technique, passing, dribbling, crossing and excellent vision which should help creating chances for us. I expect him to be a starter for us.

i.imgur.com/yPvVekr.png

Marco is our intended starting goalkeeper and should be decent on this level. He signed a two year contract for 25k p/a although I hope to find a better keeper before long.

i.imgur.com/SQudvmU.png

Bayon is a signing quite similar to Sgrigna and Biondi last season. He has lots of experience and awesome technical skills. He plays on a one year contract worth 60k€ and could play as AMC or AMR for us.

Starting 11:
i.imgur.com/Ug3wlg7.png

I'm quite happy with the transfers as we strengthened the team a lot. The team should be a top 10 squad within the league and while the automatic promotion spot might be too far away, playoffs should be realistic. The one position where I'm not satisfied is the goalkeeper position as D'Arsie is at most decent at this level but there were no better options available to us.

Chapter 9Winter update2017/18
"In the hunt"

The first half of the season is over and the team looked stronger than expected. We started the season with three losses in the first four games but after that the team was tough to beat and went from victory to victory in the league and is still in the Serie C Cup.

i.imgur.com/DvxW2Vl.png

At this point, we are a serious contender for the league title with Alto Adige only four points ahead of us. The situation looks good enough that i decided to try to strengthen the team further in an attempt to promote directly already this season:

i.imgur.com/zmYkMAD.png

Transfers

i.imgur.com/x3hpJDc.png

We weren't excited with our goalkeepers and Grandi is certainly an upgrade over D'Arsie. He's very solid in every aspect of the game and should certainly help our defense. He is loaned till the end of the season but we would later sign him permanently on a free transfer.

i.imgur.com/glFUUrJ.png

Barak is one of the best players in the league. Good size for a central midfielder and a great touch on the ball are just two of his strengths. He's loaned for the remainder of the season and should be a starter for us.

We also added a few more guys for depth and backup roles. All of them are loaned in although we would award H'Maidat a permanent contract later:

AMC H'Maidat, MC Tabanelli, DL Crialese, AML Frediani

We have two notable departures: Our fullback Gandelli (1x subbed in this season) didnt play a role for us and Crialese should be an upgrade over him so we could afford letting him go. Corsale is a talent that had received very good reports by our staff. However, our coaching team and our facilities aren't yet on the level to help talents to get the best possible development so Lazio's offer convinced me to sell him because he can develop better. The 135k fee helps us but the 50% of the next transfer fee made the deal for us as that should be more than whatever we can get with him in the near future:

Winning the league a real possibility with the transfers Grin

sammyt93
Being joint highest goal scorers suggests German is having another good season, and his star rating suggests to me that he might be able to play at Seri B level, even if he then has to come of the bench instead of starting.

The new keeper should help turn some of those losses into draws or wins as whilst 14 isn't that many to concede it does suggest the losses have been 1-0 so an upgrade in goal could turn a few into 0-0 games going forward.

If that happens then you should be able to get back that 4 point deficit and claim the league title and automatic promotion.

knockout
natt - I was quite surprised but it actually looks possible Smile

Sammyt - Fully agree with everything you said. German is in absolute beast mode again. He has ca. 15 goals in january already. Scout report says "Leading Serie C player" (3.5 stars at the end of the season). That's probably good enough to satill make a small impact in a Serie B team - especially after seeing how well he is performing so far.

As i was on vacation for all matches i cant say for sure how well he performed and his grades were mostly quite good. But similar thoughts definitely played a role in acquiring a new keeper.

Chapter 10Youth Intake2017/18
"Waiting for next year"

March is youth intake time and we're looking forward to it a lot but this time there was not much to enjoy. Being in Serie C with still mediocre facilities, nothing good can be expected so I'm not too disappointed but we should hope that the next classes will be better. Two players are worth presenting to you and none of them is outstanding:

i.imgur.com/REt49qN.png

Di Luca has apparently quite a bit of potential but i don't like his starting stats at all. Bad mental stats, only okayish size and likes to rush out but has no pace. I would be surprised if he ever becomes more than a backup for us.

i.imgur.com/bMMB9T6.png

Luca Giardi looks like he will never turn into more than a Serie C midfielder but tbh, i like him. He has a professional personality, nice playmaking ability (passing, technique, flair) and is seemingly at least a bit versatile. I reckon that he could be at least a fine backup for the national team for the next decade. At least once he decides that he can ignore his Italian secondary nationality.

Giovagnoli**** has not developed much yet but the tutoring was succesful as his personality isnt unambitious anymore and determination has been raised by six points.

Laghi*** with very small improvements. He's the first player from our academy to earn a NT cap.

Chapter 11End of Regular Season2017/18
"Hoping for the lottery"

First up: NT update. Not much to say really. All matches lost but congrats to the coach for keeping the matches reasonably close.

i.imgur.com/sHDJcqZ.png

The Serie C cup was never too important for me but with every advanced round the wish to win a competition grew. We had little problems until the semi final. Viterbese Castrense (13th in our group) scored a last minute equalizer in the first leg and the second leg went without any goals so we only advanced due to away goals. Our finals opponent was Foggia (3rd in Serie C/C) and it came to two eventful matches. After Ilari and Pomiro gave us a 2-0 lead after five minutes the game rippled for quite some time until Foggia scored three times in 69, 70. & 75. minute. That score didnt last long as Ilari scored the final equalizer in the 76. minute. And then the rematch happened and I'm just showing you the picture - it was magical:

i.imgur.com/pgguy6U.png

Meanwhile the league: The team could not continue like in the first half of the season and simply could not start another run of good results. I'm not sure what the problem was. I'm questioning if it was smart to do those winter transfers as they might have been disrupting to the team chemie. A big negative was the team disciplin - three of the losses were in matches were we had to finish the game with 10 men after red cards.

i.imgur.com/lXDXROB.png

This hurts especially when looking at the final table. Alto Adige couldnt deliver in the second half of the season so promotion would have been possible. Still fourth in the league is above pre-season expectationso we have to be satisfied with it:

i.imgur.com/Hg3HDrs.png

And we qualified for the playoff. Going against only 26 other teams for one final promotion spot - can we win the lottery?
