Flashback #2 – Patience, Precision and Leadership

Mcdonalds. The fastest growing fast food chain...ever. To be honest I don't know why I'm writing to you guys about this. Let's just say Maccas had a big impact on me growing up. No I didn't eat the food, I made it. That's right. My first and only job before becoming a cyclist was working at Maccas. I worked there so long I actually got to manager level. Anyway none of that matters. That is not the morale of the story at all.

What I am trying to say is, Maccas taught me life skills. Not only how to flip burgers or make a nice coffee. They also taught me how to be patient with difficult customers, precision and timing from making the burgers correct and quickly and finally leadership. Being the manager at Maccas is a lot harder then people make it out to be. I got to experience it first hand. I managed the busiest Maccas in Lithuania. I never thought anyone would say this but without Maccas I would not be the person I am today.

Hey guys.

I want to show you the results of the Tour of San Luis. Coppel was amazing there getting an awesome win in the GC! He did amazing!

First ever professional stage race. I will be the main leadout man for Sammy Dumoulin here. I have always loved this race on TV. I hope I can do well for the team here.

Live Coverage

Paul Sherwen: Adam Phelen of Drapac Cycling won the 1st Intermediate Sprint ahead of the other 2 breakaway riders Rowsell of Netapp-Endura and Hosek of Bauknecht.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%201_zpsygk3fiv9.jpg

Robbie McEwen: Phelen wins the intermediate sprint once again.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%202_zps7rjspyow.jpg

Paul Sherwen: A leadout by the new team on the block. Team Airbus has a leadout all worked out. The Canadian, Hugo Houle. Followed by Navardauskas, a very strong rider there. And then we have...Robbie who is that?

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%203_zpseouvp3gi.jpg

Robbie McEwen: That is Matas Zukauskas from Lithuania Paul. Apparently his nickname back home is 'The Flash' so he must be pretty fast.

Paul Sherwen: Wow...He has the final leadout for team leader Samuel Dumoulin. That is a big responsibility. I wonder if he can do it...

Robbie McEwen: Well lets wait and see Paul. Only 11km to go now and the team's are all starting to form their sprint trains. The obvious favourite is 'The Manx Missile', Mark Cavendish.

Paul Sherwen: Well the breakaway is done with 10km to go! Now it gets really exciting! Will there be a late attack. Will it be the favourite or will it be an unknown sprinter. We will know in less then 10km.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%204_zpsnfemnt7w.jpg

Robbie McEwen: Paul! Look just behind the Omega Pharma – Quickstep train! Is that...yes it is! That's Team Airbus!

Paul Sherwen: I did tell you that Navardauskas was a strong rider Robbie! Well it looks like we will get a close view of Zukauskas leading out his leader!

Robbie McEwen: The young Zukauskas is going very strong! He lacks a bit of the kick but that is normal for a first time leadout.

Paul Sherwen: Yes I have to agree with you Robbie. He is doing great for his first time leadout! 1.9km to go though and it looks like Dumoulin is pulling out of the slipstream. Going very early!

Robbie McEwen: Well sometimes you have to go that early but he is actually just moving over. He stays in the shield of the young Lithuanian.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%205_zps8hkzzjw4.jpg

Robbie McEwen: Now with 1km to go it actually looks like Dumoulin is catching Cavendish!

Paul Sherwen: That would be an amazing victory for that team wouldn't it Robbie.

Robbie McEwen: It is going to be very close as we come into the last hundred metres!

Paul Sherwen: Wow Mark Cavendish is a lucky man! Dumoulin was sprinting fast and he was coming after The Manx Missile!

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%207_zpsito4gyw0.jpg

Robbie McEwen: Yes he was! I am very impressed with Airbus Cycling Team! Dumoulin did amazing today and so did the youngster Zukauskas! I think he actually finished in 14th place which is an amazing result for him!

Paul Sherwen: Yes it is! Well that concludes what was a very very exciting finale! We head down for the prize giving’s.

Robbie McEwen: We thank you all for joining us today for Live coverage of the Tour of Qatar stage 1. Paul and myself will be back tomorrow for stage 2 and we wish to see all there!

My Reaction:

I am super happy with my performance today. I lead out Dumoulin to a great 2nd place! Obviously I can't take full credit because Houle and Navardauskas got us into the position. Dumoulin thanked everyone afterwards and it was me he thanked last and thanked me the most! I feel so privileged to be on this team! I can't wait to see if we can do one better tomorrow!

Flashback #3 – Timing

Being at Boarding school teaches you a thing or 2 outside of the classroom. It teaches you that being away from you home and family can be tough. It also teaches you about timing. Being even a second late cost you a visit to the Headmaster's office which was never pleasant. The Headmaster was a rather young man around the age of 30 – 40. He wasn't mean as such but when he needed to be he could be. When I wasn't getting into trouble I actually got along quite well with Mr Houle. He had an awesome Canadian Accent. He had a son named Hugo who just happened to be one of my best friends at school. I never knew he was 4 years older then me though until he suddenly left school when I finished year 8. No wonder I never saw him in class. When I asked the Headmaster where he had gone he said that Hugo had been approached by a French team and that his cycling career was just starting off.

After getting Facebook that night I found Hugo's account. I messaged him that night saying...

Hey Guys!

Got some more results for you as well. The Etoile de Besseges was rather mean on our team but it wasn't a big race to us. Michael Matthews won a few stages and took the overall win.

The 2nd stage is a flat Team Time Trial. I have no idea what will happen here.

Live Coverage

Paul Sherwen: Hello and welcome to Live coverage of Stage 2 of the Tour of Qatar.

Robbie McEwen: Yes today is a Team Time Trial which are quite hard for the teams but very important if the GC is your teams target.

Paul Sherwen: Now yesterday we saw a new team do very well! Airbus Cycling team got 2nd place with Samuel Dumoulin thanks to a rather special leadout from Hugo Houle, Navardauskas and a new face Matas Zukauskas. Zukauskas is a rather good sprinter/cobbler. He is a strong rider and proved that yesterday.

Robbie McEwen: Yes he did but today, Paul, is a completely different sort of race. It is a team time trial. The team must be all in perfect rhythm. One person on bad form could wreck the team's time severely. Well without wasting any more time let's get straight to the action!

The Race

Paul Sherwen: The first team to set off is MTN – Qhubeka. The South African team.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%201_zps1l8lqtw1.jpg

Robbie McEwen: Honestly I don't see them doing very well today. They don't really have any stand out time trial riders.

Paul Sherwen: Drapac is next.

Robbie McEwen: Same story here. Plus there is only 6 riders in here for Drapac which doesn't help.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%202_zpscbocskv7.jpg

Paul Sherwen: Here is Garmin – Sharp

Robbie McEwen: Now this is a team that could win today! I am excited to see their time.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%203_zpspdlhfigd.jpg

Paul Sherwen: Now here is the favourites to win today Radioshack Leopard.

Robbie McEwen: This is a fantastic team. I think they will win today.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%204_zpssggm6xtl.jpg

Paul Sherwen: Team Saxo – Tinkoff. Robbie what do you think about their chances?

Robbie McEwen: I think they can get a top 5 but I don't think anyone can top the strength of Radioshack.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%205_zpstbyzxxov.jpg

Paul Sherwen: Orica – GreenEDGE.

Robbie McEwen: They have a good chance for a top 3 today. A strong well rounded team.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%206_zpswpgzl5a2.jpg

Paul Sherwen: Now for the new team. Airbus Cycling Team is all anyone can talk about right now.

Robbie McEwen: That's right Paul. I'm really not sure how they will do today. They have some really strong riders like Navardauskas, Houle and Zukauskas but they also have some bad TT riders like Dumoulin and Elissonde.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%207_zpsrna6fjlq.jpg

Paul Sherwen: Finally the team of the overall leader, Omega Pharma – Quickstep.

Robbie McEwen: A strong team. They have a good chance of winning today.

Robbie McEwen: I really didn't want that to happen.

Paul Sherwen: Me either. So the team here couldn't quite keep up with the team of Radioshack Leopard. They are going to need a miracle to win the General Classification now.

Robbie McEwen: Well that's it for our coverage today. We will be here again tomorrow for stage 3.

My Reaction:

Well that's not what the team wanted to happen but we did our best. We were going as hard as we could. I don't know how we are going to come back and get top 3 overall like our sponsor wants.

I'll seeya tomorrow

Hugo Houle? Intriguing....

Unlucky on the day for Airbus, but they'll bite back better than ever, I'm sure!
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Flashback #4 – Timing Cont.

After getting Facebook that night I found Hugo's account. I messaged him that night saying...

Hey Hugo
I heard you got picked for a cycling team...Congratulations!
I was wondering if you could help me start cycling. I always enjoyed the stories you told me about you cycling and I want your help to start training and racing.

If you can't understand.
Seeya Hugo
Matas.

P.S. I hope you come visit one day.

Now I await his reply.

Hey Guys

The team is still sad about yesterday. Today is a new day though and anything can happen. Maybe today we can get that win.

Stage 3 is another flat stage. Dumoulin is feeling good and looking for a win.

Live Coverage

Robbie McEwen: Welcome to stage 3 of the Tour of Qatar!

Paul Sherwen: Today will be very exciting again with another sprint. I am looking forward to seeing Airbus Cycling Team in the last 10km.

The Race

Paul Sherwen: Well it looks like Zukauskas was given some freedom today by Dumoulin. He is going for the breakaway.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%201_zpsvhwlcurf.jpg

Robbie McEwen: Well Zukauskas was coming but Gatto takes the win at the 1st of 2 Intermediate Sprints. 3rd was Lund of Saxo – Tinkoff.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%202_zpsfbnoph6k.jpg

Paul Sherwen: Look Robbie! Zukauskas is going alone! 27Km to go!

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%203_zpsh2i11q89.jpg

Robbie McEwen: Oh 15km to go and Zukauskas has given up. He is heading back to the peloton.

Paul Sherwen: Well it looks like Navardauskas is doing the leadout on his own. 2.5km to go and Airbus Cycling Team is in a good position.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%204_zpsrvpfxy30.jpg

Robbie McEwen: Yes they are Paul. I am sad to see that Zukauskas won't be there but tomorrow he might be.

Paul Sherwen: 1km to go. Airbus has lost ground.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%205_zpsu5rmth7t.jpg

Robbie McEwen: Once again Mark Cavendish takes the win. Dumoulin could only manage 9th place.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%206_zpsw1dqfa9j.jpg

Paul Sherwen: Lets head down to the prize giving's.

Paul Sherwen: Well that's it from us for today. We will see you all tomorrow for more exciting racing.

My Reaction:

I was happy with my breakaway attempt. Now tomorrow I am back to leadout duties. I am looking forward to it!

Hi Guys!

So my first ever breakaway yesterday. I got to tell you it felt good being the last rider to be caught by the peloton. I will be doing it again but I will be working for Dumoulin for the rest of the Tour of Qatar.

Dumoulin will be hoping to do better then yesterday.

Live Coverage

Paul Sherwen: Welcome everyone to the 4th stage of the Tour of Qatar.

Robbie McEwen: Today is a big stage. With 3 stages to go this is an important day for everyone.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%201_zpssqakadfe.jpg

Robbie McEwen: The rest of the breakaway includes Failli, Phelan, Lund, Kozubek, Vorganov, Russom.

Paul Sherwen: Failli takes the 2nd Sprint point.

Robbie McEwen: He had a great turn of speed Paul. Downing takes a good 2nd and Kozubek 3rd.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%202_zpsgptvqbj3.jpg

Paul Sherwen: There doesn't seem to be any sorted leadout today.

Robbie McEwen: Your right Paul. Zukauskas and Dumoulin are trying to find the best wheel possible.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%203_zpsmwsdcq3s.jpg

Paul Sherwen: Zukauskas has started his sprint with 2km to go!

Robbie McEwen: Dumoulin is back a little bit on Ciolek's wheel.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%204_zpsddpl5yuz.jpg

Paul Sherwen: Cavendish started his sprint at the right time and takes another win!

Robbie McEwen: Goss takes 2nd which is great for Australia and Dumoulin takes 3rd which is a great finish for Airbus Cycling Team.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/TQ%206_zpsfyixu2t3.jpg

Paul Sherwen: Cavendish was just too strong. I would really like to see Airbus get a win here.

Robbie McEwen: So would I Paul! This concludes our coverage for today. 2 stages to go. Cavendish is so strong and I can't see anyone getting around him here.

My Reaction:

Well I thought I could get away with an early sprint but I didn't have the energy. Dumoulin did well with another podium. He is proving to be a really strong sprinter. Only 2 stages to go. I hope we can win a stage here.

I'll seeya tomorrow

great results for Dumoulin in Qatar, and Matas seems to be having a good race too!
