Santos Tour Down Under
January 23rd, 2014 : Stage 3
Norwood – Campbelltown: 143.5 kms - Hilly

The third stage is really the first stage for the GC as one sharp climb just before the finish looms over the race. Those with intentions on winning will be making moves and separating themselves from the rest of the bunch.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/31.jpg

Three riders would create the break of the day with Silvan Dillier taking both sprints for team BMC. Right behind him is Damien Gaudin of AG2R and current KoM leader, Europcar's Christophe Kern lags behind not interested in the points.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/32.jpg

Kern would be dropped shortly after the two sprint points on the day leaving just Dillier and Gaudin in the break, and going into the only major climb the pair still had a sizable advantage, one Gaudin would hope to make stick as he attacks BMC's neo-pro.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/33.jpg

With Dillier no longer in contention for a stage win, BMC plays their other card, an Ace, as Cadel Evans attacks up the climb leaving the peloton desperate to keep up. While some may have tried to mark him, none seemed to be able to match him on the climb.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/34.jpg

It would be too little, too late, though as Gaudin goes on to easily take the solo win, both arms raised in triumph. He will take over leadership of the race and a fairly sizable cushion for a gap back to whoever comes in next.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/35.jpg

It would be BMC's Cadel Evans taking second on the stage, though he was joined right at the end by Garmin's Nathan Hass and Adam Hansen of Lotto Belisol. Gaudin's breakaway partner Silvan Dillier would come in 5th just behind this group.

Doubt a class rider like Gaudin can lose more than a minute on Willunga Hill, so I guess Cadel will "just" have to keep his 2nd position. Doesn't mean you can't try!

January 24th, 2014 : Stage 4
Unley – Victor Harbor: 149.1 kms - Flat

A sprinters profile for most of the stage, a small kicker just 1k out from the finish might disturb the pure sprinters from the finish they want. A steep climb from the start of the race may put things in a weird place and give advantage to a breakaway as teams will have work to get organized.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/41.jpg

A large group of seven gets off the front for today's break of the day. Led here by Drapac's Phelan, behind in order is Palini (Lampre), Earle (Sky), van Emden (Belkin), Voigt (Trek), Kern (Europcar) and Offredo (FDJ).
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/42.jpg

Lampre's Andrea Palini would be the last to surrender but as the sprint opens up the fast guys will go flying by and finishing this stage in a bunch sprint.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/43.jpg

Bennati does it again, clearly the best sprinter here he takes another easy looking win. Francesco Gavazzi of Astana takes second ahead of Gianni Meersman for Omega Pharma. But a third win for Tinkoff - Saxo and Daniele Bennati is the story of the day.

Santos Tour Down Under
January 25th, 2014 : Stage 5
McLaren Vale – Old Willunga Hill: 151.2 kms - Hilltop Finish

The queen stage of the race, this finish atop Old Willunga Hill will be a chance for the GC guys to make their mark on the race. Gaudin has a large lead and will have to give everything he can to ensure no one is able to climb over him.

Update to come later.

Cossack
I think Cadel can get the GC here, Gaudin is really weak on hills (around 67 IIRC), so if Cadel is in good form and Gaudin in not an excellent one, he should be able to get it. Also much will depend on BMC team, some strong help during the first Willunga pass would be helpful to make a selection.

The stage is already played last night in the stream, Cossack. Not gonna spoil the results and the fun, so you better wait for the report. It certainly was interesting. Smile
