@Shonak - Not that ambitious, just well organized. Ah, the joyfulness of youth.
@bbl - Didn't know that! Hopefully you weren't in charge of potentials as i've had to alter many of them...
@Jesl - Cheers
@Jsea - Thanks
Born in Douglas, Capital of the Isle of Man, on May 21st 1985 a young Cavendish did not follow the normal path of the pro cyclist. His first bike racing was done on a BMX at Douglas National Sports Center. The story is known of his first race, where he wasn't just last but was absolutely stone dead last. His competitive spirit forced him to return another day, except this time he was the one out front.
The proper racing began informally at age 12 with Mountain Bikes. He was already beating his mates, and their mates. Then older kids as well. Around this time he met David Millar, who was the top British Pro at the time. It was Millar who provided that spark to pursue cycling as a genuine career.
After leaving school Mark worked in a bank for two years to save up enough money to go and chase down his dream. From there he went a did amateur racing all over the UK and Northern Europe, funded by those two years of hard work. He quickly learned his style of aggressive sprinting and used it to rack up a number of results.
He was soon bought into the brand new Olympic Development programme, headed by Dave Brailsford. Mark was always up against the odds in the system. Unless he was actually racing he couldn't produce the efforts needed to impress the staff. On more than one occasion he was on the edge of being kicked out. Luckily when he did race he was a cut above the rest and could save his place in the programme. The highlight being a 2nd place in the Junior Nationals.
2004 took him to an amateur team sponsored by Persil, along with a couple of others from the Olympic programme. In the season he took two wins on the road but was doing more and more track racing with eyes on World Championships in 2005. He raced Madison with Rob Hayles and together they took home a Gold Medal! He also won the European Points Race title in the same year.
Team Sparkasse were looking after him through the 2005 season on the road, they were T-Mobiles partner/development squad. On the road Mark win the UK Crits National title as well as a stage of the Tour of Berlin, a major U23 race. He was ready to take a step forwards and that brings us to 2006. Still with Team Sparkasse but now with serious expectations to perform and win. Do well enough and the senior T-Mobile Team awaited, do poorly and the dream might be over.

@Voets - Cool
@Jesl - Track sprinters. Probably not much until late season
@Cunego - Track sprinters exactly. That's not all for Cav's obviously
@bbl - Nope, it's always your fault now. Don't worry i havn't won anything since the September comp
@Code - No idea
Jacobs Creek Tour Down Under - Part 1
Squad: Parinussa, Cavendish, Flammang, Honstein, Dudek, Owczarek, Clancy
Cavendish to lead the team with the whole focus around sprinting and breakaways. Early season though so not much form and some solid opposition could make for a tough week. At least the weather's nice!
Stage 1
De Matteis (TEN), Scheirlinckx (JAR) and Borisov (ODM) comprised the days breakaway. Nothing eventful and all caught with 15km to race
3KM to go - Flammang and Clancy are pacing Cavendish on the left, it's not going well. Down the middle is KNF, then it's PER and finally MRM pacing on the right hand side
FINISH - The Sparkasse "train" just couldn't handle the pace. Up front Jezowski (KNF) took the win by a couple of lengths from Abakoumov and Degano.
1 | Krzysztof Jezowski | Knauf Team | 3h48'29 | 2 | Igor Abakoumov | Jartazi - 7Mobile | s.t. | 3 | Enrico Degano | Barloworld | s.t. | 4 | Sean Finning | SouthAustralia.com - AIS | s.t. | 5 | Andrus Aug | Acqua & Sapone - Caffé Mokambo | s.t. | 6 | Vasilis Anastopoulos | Team Vorarlberg | s.t. | 7 | Gerrit Glomser | Team Vorarlberg | s.t. | 8 | Piotr Zaradny | Knauf Team | s.t. | 9 | Eloy Teruel | 3 Molinos Resort | s.t. | 10 | Claudio Cucinotta | Team Tenax Salmilano | s.t. | 19 | Mark Cavendish | Team Sparkasse | s.t. |
Stage 2
Hilly stage, so simmed and results
1 | Borut Bozic | Perutnina Ptuj | 3h39'13 | 2 | Javier Pascual Rodriguez | Comunidad Valenciana | s.t. | 3 | Jure Golcer | Perutnina Ptuj | s.t. | 4 | Fabio Sacchi | Team Milram | + 19 | 5 | Evgeni Popov | Rabobank Continental | s.t. | 6 | Ivan Seledkov | Omnibike Dynamo Moscow | s.t. | 7 | Markus Eichler | Team Regiostrom - Senges | s.t. | 8 | Mitja Mahoric | Perutnina Ptuj | s.t. | 9 | Björn Glasner | Team Lamonta | s.t. | 10 | Simone Cadamuro | Team Milram | + 30 | 42 | Mark Cavendish | Team Sparkasse | + 1'48 |
Stage 3
Back on the flat and it was Von Kleinsorgen (TLM), Vanthourenhout (RB3), Trofimov (ODM), Del Nero (MOL) and Kaupas (JAR) to chance their luck. As usual nothing much happened for the majority of the day.
Surprisingly the break lasted until 6km to go, surely frightening some of the peloton.
FINISH - Today Cavendish tried to fight in the wheels but couldn't make anything stick. The battle for the win was much closer with Bozic just edging the win from Sabatini and Jezowski.
1 | Borut Bozic | Perutnina Ptuj | 3h11'38 | 2 | Fabio Sabatini | Team Milram | s.t. | 3 | Krzysztof Jezowski | Knauf Team | s.t. | 4 | Vasilis Anastopoulos | Team Vorarlberg | s.t. | 5 | Gerrit Glomser | Team Vorarlberg | s.t. | 6 | Igor Abakoumov | Jartazi - 7Mobile | s.t. | 7 | Ashley Hutchinson | SouthAustralia.com - AIS | s.t. | 8 | Peter Dawson | SouthAustralia.com - AIS | s.t. | 9 | Wes Sulzberger | SouthAustralia.com - AIS | s.t. | 10 | Evgeni Popov | Rabobank Continental | s.t. | 18 | Mark Cavendish | Team Sparkasse | s.t. |
Comment
Tough opening few days. The team can't provide any real support for the mass sprint leaving it up to Mark to fight it out. Problem being that for now he doesn't have the form or experience to do so. Still there are 2 more opportunities for a result so he'll stick it out. At least the weather's nice!

Jacobs Creek tour Down Under - Part 2
Stage 4
Parinussa penetrated the break for the first time for the team. With him were Wiese (TRS), von Mingerot (JAR) and Nielsen (TPH). They made a real push for the surprise win, defying the peloton all the way to the 5km mark!
3KM to go and it's Den Bakker leading the rush. Cadamuro is in his wheel, then it's Aug, then Bozic. Cavendish fights Jezowski for that wheel and is winning the contest. Schulze stacks up behind Mark, while Abakourmov goes behind Jezowski
1KM to go and Glosmer leads on the left. Facci went with him but both are starting to fade. Bozic leads it up the middle with Cavendish glued in his slipstream.Cadamuro, Aug and Abakoumov are all contesting the finish as well.
FINISH Bozic is just on fire! Cavendish sticks with him for the podium along with Glosmer who went very long in the end
1 | Borut Bozic | Perutnina Ptuj | 3h20'31 | 2 | Mark Cavendish | Team Sparkasse | s.t. | 3 | Gerrit Glomser | Team Vorarlberg | s.t. | 4 | Mauro Facci | Barloworld | s.t. | 5 | Igor Abakoumov | Jartazi - 7Mobile | s.t. | 6 | Evgeni Popov | Rabobank Continental | s.t. | 7 | Sven Vanthourenhout | Rabobank Continental | s.t. | 8 | Marlon Pérez Arango | Team Tenax Salmilano | s.t. | 9 | Sergei Kolesnikov | Omnibike Dynamo Moscow | s.t. | 10 | Krzysztof Jezowski | Knauf Team | s.t. |
Stage 5
Hilly stage so a nice rest for the team.
1 | Javier Pascual Rodriguez | Comunidad Valenciana | 3h34'14 | 2 | Maarten Den Bakker | Team Milram | s.t. | 3 | William Walker | Rabobank Continental | + 10 | 4 | Hrvoje Miholjevic | Perutnina Ptuj | s.t. | 5 | Jure Golcer | Perutnina Ptuj | + 26 | 6 | Gerrit Glomser | Team Vorarlberg | s.t. | 7 | David Blanco | Comunidad Valenciana | s.t. | 8 | Eladio Jiménez | Comunidad Valenciana | s.t. | 9 | Cristiano Salerno | Team Tenax Salmilano | s.t. | 10 | Tomasz Kiendys | Knauf Team | s.t. | 92 | Mark Cavendish | Team Sparkasse | + 5'04 |
Stage 6
The final day in Oz and Parinussa was all in to win the KoM jersey. He won both sprints to seal the jersey. His companions were von Kleinsorgen (TLM), Collingwood (TRS), McPartland (TEN), Scheirlinckx (JAR), Sabido (BAR) and Riber-Sellebjerg (RPH). They again made a great fight to survive to the 5km mark
3KM to go and Kiendys leads out Zaradny who is in charge of Jezowski. Schulze, Bozic, Cavendish, Abakoumov and Heiny are those directly behind
Suddenly Kiendys has a gap! KNF are confused and Cavendish darts out of line sensing an opportunity....
FINISH But smarter heads prevail. Cavendish burns out early as Glosmer narrowly beats Bozic to win the stage. The podium completed by Schulze
1 | Gerrit Glomser | Team Vorarlberg | 1h59'25 | 2 | Borut Bozic | Perutnina Ptuj | s.t. | 3 | André Schulze | Team Lamonta | s.t. | 4 | Fabio Sabatini | Team Milram | s.t. | 5 | Enrico Degano | Barloworld | s.t. | 6 | Stefan Heiny | Team Lamonta | s.t. | 7 | Eloy Teruel | 3 Molinos Resort | s.t. | 8 | Andrus Aug | Acqua & Sapone - Caffé Mokambo | s.t. | 9 | Evgeni Popov | Rabobank Continental | s.t. | 10 | Igor Abakoumov | Jartazi - 7Mobile | s.t. | 18 | Mark Cavendish | Team Sparkasse | s.t. |
GC
1 | Javier Pascual Rodriguez | Comunidad Valenciana | 19h33'14 | 2 | Jure Golcer | Perutnina Ptuj | + 38 | 3 | Borut Bozic | Perutnina Ptuj | + 39 | 4 | Maarten Den Bakker | Team Milram | + 1'00 | 5 | David Blanco | Comunidad Valenciana | + 1'12 | 51 | Mark Cavendish | Team Sparkasse | + 7'02 |

Comment
Promising i guess. A podium finish shows that the raw speed is in the legs but errors in who to follow, when to sprint and the lead-out prevented anything more. These are all skills that improve with time though, whereas speed is almost impossible to teach. It marks Cavendish out as someone to watch as the season progresses.

this is a 2006 database right? so why is Den Bakker wearing the Dutch NC jersey (at least I think it is) instead of van Bon (in other words: database mistake
The Manx took a chance on stage 5 but it was too far out for a top 10
