If I were to critizice the life-work of Bjarne Riis odds are that I would need 24hour protection from a medium sized army to protect me...

So for now I (have to) blame the UCI!

Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Omloop became a bit of a weird race. First we raced it with me finishing 4th, but then we were told we had to race it again because the organisers gad accidentally refused Van Avermaet to start.

But that only helped me focus as I now knew the route a lot better.

A break got away and started looking dangerous in soite of among others Breschel doing a lot of good work.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Omlo-9_zpsff010c35.jpg

So with just over 20 km to go I decided to attack. The Kenyan Sithembele followed my wheel right to the front and soon after so did the rest of the group. A good few riders tried to get away, but things wer kept together for a sprint in a 20-rider group.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Omlo-15_zpse55dfa64.jpg

I had learned from the first time around to see when the others became voulnereable so with just over one km to go I made my move.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Omlo-16_zps4c3554c6.jpg

I wasn't able to keep Boonen behind, but I'm extremely proud to finish 2nd i my first big cobbled classic ahead of a lot of really strong riders!

Next up for me is Paris - Nice, where I will be more of a helper.

P.S. Just realised that this result will bring the team above 0 points as well Grin

I probably wouldn't have signed any of them for Radioshack anyway Wink

For a rider like me there's basically two kinds of races: The ones I race to win and the ones where I just hope to be able to make the day a little easier for the others.
Paris - Nice was on of the latter kind...

On stage 2 I was caught behind a huge crash that happened with 15 km to go. I wasn't hurt, so I just rode along to the finish with the other unlucky riders.

The rest of teh race pretty much confirmed why I'll never be a GC contender outside Northern Europe...

P-N Results
Stage 1: 175th / + 25
Stage 2: 167th / + 3’07
Stage 3: 74th / s.t.
Stage 4: 45th / s.t.
Stage 5: 84th / + 4’08
Stage 6: 191st / + 25’40
Stage 7: 96th / + 35
Stage 8: 177th / + 2’37

GC: 140th / + 35'05

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/EPIC/McDermott_SanRemo_zps87f16c97.jpg

From there I went on to one of the races I dream of winning some day: Milano - Sanremo. Or rather I rode it inbetween two of the Paris - Nice stages, which probably explain why I was so tired in the end of that race...

i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0180_zpsf8ae328a.jpg

It was a very tough day, but I managed to find the ressources to tag along an not only finish in the main bunch, but also getting 45 points by finishing 17th!

Now I look farward to getting back to the Belgian races where I hope to continue my good form.

I APOLOGIZE!

I'm terrible sorry about what I (didn't) manage to do in Dwaars door Vlaanderen a few days ago.

After doing great in both Omloop and Milano - Sanremo I forgot for a moment that I still have a lot to learn and probably sampling the brilliant Belgian beer until midnight was not the best idea I have ever had - that should be left to after races and not before.

I promise that I will be more focused when E3 and Gent - Wevelgem kick of in the near future.

Another Apology...

I now my 28th place in E3 was simplu just not good enough.

With Tosatto in the break I tried to stay a bit further back than I perhaps should have in order to avoid squeezing up the speed of the chase.
Unfortunately I was caught unaware when the peloton split on one of the hills and got caught in a wrong group.

I tried to get back up along with among others Ballan and Gallopin, but the pace ahead was deadly and we just weren't enough riders to reel in the QuickStep train.

I promise to be more awake in Gent - Wevelgem and hopefully I'll get to train my skills on hills a bit in the break as I (for obvious reasons) won't be racing the Continental championships. Actually I think perhaps I'll join the rest of the team there and train on those hills.

Doing What I Came For...

Finally I got my racing legs back on.
i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab216/epic2000/EPIC-GENT-WEVELGEM/GW-006_zpsc315d7e6.jpg

While I'm still a bit ashamed of my effort in E3 and Dwaars door Vlaanderen it was great to see that the teamstill believes in me as they really put in a lot of work throughout the day!
i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab216/epic2000/EPIC-GENT-WEVELGEM/GW-018_zps9c9ce290.jpg

With that in mind it felt great to be able to mix in the sprinte and get the team a 5th place as thanks for all their hard work for me.

Also how are the odds of us going to our neighbours to the North for Glava Tour of Norway? If we are I would really like to be part of the team there. Other than that I have no particular wishes for the next part of the season except what we already have agreed and that you use me where I get the best chance to use my strengths meaning no GT and as few mountains as possible...

Update

Time for a long awaited update (apologies for the lack of activity by me here in this HQ, I've been rather busy over the past month - although a big review of Part 1 will be put up once all races in part 1 have finished).

Firstly, it's time to look at how we fared in our goals over Part 1:

Main goals:
Top 10 GC Tirreno - Adriatico: Success
Top 10 Gent - Wevelgem: Success
Top 5 GC Catalunya: Success (barring a crash/act of God)

Countered goals:
Top 10 Lugano: Fail
Top 5 E3: Fail (1 place off)
Podium Paris-Nice: Fail (1 place off)

So there you have it, our own goals all easily achieved, perhaps we need to set some more difficult ones in the future, and so close to two of our three countered goals - perhaps it's bad luck, or just bad goal-setting Wink

Now that we move forwards into the second part of the season, it's time to create some more goals:

Easy goal: Top 10 Paris-Roubaix
Medium goal: Podium Criterium du Dauphine
Hard goal: Top 5 Giro d'Italia

As mentioned before, a full review of the first part of the season will follow shortly, as soon as all of the races have concluded, but a brief update just to remind you of what happened:

After a poor start to the season, with a less-than-pleasing TdU and some exploratory CT races, the team got into the swing of things with Erik McDermott, in his first year as a professional cyclist, claiming a superb 2nd place in the Omlooop. That was followed some decent climbing from Roman Kreuziger and Alberto Contador in Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico respectively that brought them both a finish in the top 5 GC.
After that there were some more strong results on the cobbles, Tosatto an agonizing 6th in E3 and McDermott a great 5th in Gent-Wevelgem. After this, we've had the wonder race, Catalunya (more on that later). Four stage wins (and counting) and Contador likely to win overall, with just one stage left at the time of writing.

Who do you plan on leading in the Giro? If it's Kreuziger then I think Top 5 is more of a Medium goal.

Couldn't decide which way round the medium and hard goals should go, I just thought them up and couldn't decide which one was harder Pfft
