@fernando & selwink: I was so surprised with the 2nd place! All the other sprinters couldn't organise their lead-outs and I was so close to beating Cavendish! Nice start for the team Smile

PCM looks really nice on my netbook Smile I am not running on full graphics either

Giro d'Italia Stage 2 - Ischia to Forio

www.cyclingfans.net/2013/images/2013_giro_d_italia_stage2_profile.png

The second stage of the Giro is an undulating Team Time Trial from Ischia to Forio. With time losses on the stage at stake, many teams could really be put on the back foot in their battle for the GC.

Giro d'Italia Stage 3 - Sorrento to Marina di Ascea

cycling-passion.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/giro-d-italia-2013-stage-3-profile.jpg

After yesterday's TTT, many teams will feel that they will have to make up for lost time. Bardini, Vini-Fantini and Androni all struggled on stage 2, so expect them to show their colours today.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0001_zpsc8d1e2da.jpg

11km: After a fast and furious start, it was Lars Bak (LTB) and Romain Bardet (ALM) who tried their luck on the early rises.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0002_zps11a178b5.jpg

14km: When Stefano Pirazzi (BAR) attacked after the 2 riders up the road, we knew it couldn't be ignored, and Fabio Felline went with him.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0003_zps6898404a.jpg

33km: With Garmin drilling hard on the front of the peleton, the group of 4 did not get far up the road. Everything was brought back together, and as the pace slackened again, Karsten Kroon (TST) attacked, with Fabio again trying to sick to his wheel, closely followed by Oscar Gatto (VIN).

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0004_zpsc5bea3f4.jpg

55km: Garmin continued to set the pace, and were joined by Vacansoleil in the chase.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0006_zps2bde92cc.jpg

62km: Well it was clear why Vacansoleil were chasing, as Juan-Antonio Flecha launched off after the breakaway.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0007_zps7f868c0f.jpg

133km: The break gained a maximum of 5'33" over the main group, and as the field reached the first big climb of the day, Fabio Duarte (COL) tried to test his legs.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0009_zps70ca1f91.jpg

160km: Garmin left Duarte dangling off at a gap of 30", but the high pace set ultimately caught the break in the process.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0010_zps333bb8eb.jpg

172km: At the foot of the final climb, stage favourite Carlos Betancur (ALM) attacked, leaving the other GC favourites looking at each other to see who would take up the chase.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0012_zpsf0349872.jpg

180: Betancur had over 1'00" gap before the others reacted, with Cadel Evans (BMC), Alberto Contador (TST) and Vincenzo Nibali (AST) all showing their hand.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0013_zps734f6b74.jpg

185km: Over the top of the climb, and the GC men couldn't close the gap to Betancur and sat up. Seeing a chance to catch everyone off guard, Franco Pellizotti hit the front, pushing it hard down the climb.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0015_zpsbd072ef9.jpg

211km: Franco could only gain 34" over the remaining peleton, and as the sprint for the finish got underway, he was soon swamped by the others, but they had fallen well short of catching Betancur

212km: The Colombian rider celebrated a great, well deserved victory into Marina di Ascea. He could be the man to watch in this year's Giro. Defending Champion Ryder Hesjedal (GAR) and American Tejay van Garderen (BMC) rounded off the podium, whilst Roland Nocentini (ALM) became the first casualty of the Giro, crashing out on the final decent.

Nice effort by Pellizotti at least. Wink

Selwink
The team did quite well in this stage, but it's a shame Pellizotti couldn't stay ahead

@fernando & selwink: Pellizotti was just dead after trying to keep up with the GC men during the first attacks. He is in the corner of the screen showing Contador, Nibali etc, and he could only get 34" on the downhill. As soon as the flat came, he had nothing left.

Need to remember to conserve energy for later in the race though, so can't keep doing these sorts of attacks to earn time back so early in the race

Great win by Betancur... you might have to do it like that... conserve energy because this is one long race.. Wink

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0004_zps48cb6a7e.jpg

22km: It took longer than expected for the break to form today, as a very active Euskatel team prevented any riders getting off the front. The tempo subsided enough for Jackson Rodriguez to show the team colours.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0005_zpsf03cf1e2.jpg

32km: As Rodriguez's lead grew to over 2'00", Benoît Vaugrenard (FDJ) went off the front in search of joining him up the road.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0006_zps10eb8986.jpg

55km: Instruction was given to Rodriguez to ease up and let the FDJ.fr man join him in the break. Working well, the two opened up quite a lead.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0009_zps781abb65.jpg

134km: It was left to Garmin to take control of the peleton, as it was their Maglia Rosa to protect.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0010_zps65bf5886.jpg

190km: At the foot of the first climb, the break's lead was down to 1'44", and Michele Scarponi (LAM) thought it was time for him to stretch his legs.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0011_zps7dc81b29.jpg

194km: The Scarponi acceleration caused movement in the pack, as Gadret (ALM), Verdugo (EUS), Gerrans (OCE) and Kiserlovski (RLT) set off in pursuit.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0013_zps9f5c7282.jpg

206km: Scarponi, Gadret and Verdugo all bridged to the break, and sadly for Rodriguez, the injected pace was just too much as they reached the KoM sprint.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0014_zps1582b18a.jpg

222km: It was all brought back together on the descent back into the valley, but not for long as Frank Schleck (RLT) sprung out of the peleton.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0015_zps8197d8c5.jpg

233km: Schleck could only gain 34" lead, as the GC men showed their cards. Nibali (AST) went first, with Costa (MOV), Hesjedal (GRM) and Betancur (ALM) for company. Pellizotti was in chase with Damiano Cunego (LAM) in tow.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0017_zps8450930b.jpg

242km: Over the top of the climb, and Hesjedal was looking unstoppable, out on his own with Costa and Nibali chasing behind at a gap of 33".

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0018_zps2f86aced.jpg

241km: Further back, Franco was still riding with Cunego, however, with many GC riders, like Wiggins (SKY) and Evans (BMC) missing the break, they were being chased down hard.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0019_zpsc884a097.jpg

246km: At the finish, it was a victory for Hesjedal to savoir, coming home at least 30" ahead of any of his nearest rivals, extending his lead in the process.

The Rider
A good stage 4 for the team with Jackson getting into the break, although maybe guys like him should save themselves for the mountain break? Wink

Atm, it looks like Pelli will have to get into one of those successful end of Giro breaks for a good GC placing!
