4 me its a surprise Betancur. Fist year at the World Tour and first time doing Liège - Bastogne - Liège (4), La Flèche Wallonne (3) and Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco (7) and he did a good job with only 23 years old. |

Kwitakowski. Despite today's bad result he showed himself very well on the rest of the Spring races. |

Kwiatkowski, I simply had no idea he had developed into a classics rider too, and finishing 5th in the Fleche Wallonne was the most surprising result this spring. Also, Betancur, first season riding in the World Tour and already two top-5 in the Ardennes, almost winning the middle classics, and Vanmarcke, he had a win in a cobbled classic last season (Nieuwsblad I think) and finished 2nd or 3rd some years ago in the G-W, but fighting with the strongest on the most demanding race of the cobbled calendar, after failing to deliver in other races was a big surprise for me.

He sustained a knee injury ( crashed at Tirreno ) and was a doubt if he was going even ride the Classics making it even more impressive. He came to Ronde without great form, and already rode good race, and then took it up notch as we know week later.

Dan Martin isn't really a surprise. More like a confirmation of a great talent. And something tells me he is not done yet. |

I could see him win a stage at a GT this year. Anyone knows which one he will ride? |

I'm sure he has ridden the Giro in the past so he may go there again |

I voted for Stybar, next would be Gaudin and Santambrogio.
Vandenbergh, Kwiatek and Martin are not much of a surprise, or at least i would see that coming to some extent, unlike the first trio.

What has Gaudin achieved ? A prologue victory in Paris-Nice, won Cholet - Pays de Loire, and he showed up (and ended up decently placed - 5th) in Paris-Roubaix, but that's about it.
I don't think that's nearly as impressive as, say, Kwiatowski or Betancur's achievement this spring. The first one got my vote, btw.
I can't rate Santambrogio as a surprise, given his past involvement in shabby doping related affairs, there'll always be a shadow on his performances.

You answered yourself pretty nicely, results you listed are incredible for Gaudin, at least biggest surprise for me.
Kwiatkowski is not a huge surprise for me, given his incredible performance in his home tour last year and his talent. also in OPQS, everybody is overperforming (good vitamins maybe?)

I think Sergey Lagutin from Vacansoleil was a big suprise to.
He didn't win anything but he was working very hard.
Betancur, Henao and Quintana were a surprise to me to.
Kwiatkowski was a big surprise though.

Can you explain?
He has always been a quality rider, as seen by his 15th overall from the 2011 Vuelta, for example.

Nobody expected him really, i guess. But he was working very hard in the past races. He had great quality before, sure, but in the last spring classics he was very important. In the final of a race he was most of the time leading a chasing group. He was attacking a lot.

Weening surprised me. He was very strong in the hills classics.

Wow, am I late in discovering this poll. So many surprises. In cycling there are so many new names and talents coming every year. Kwiatek was impressive, but the way Gaudin handled himself in Roubaix was astounding, such aggressiveness and having 9 lives, it was definitely impressive! |

Definitely Kwiatek. I mean, he scored high on GC in Tirreno AND rode very well in the classics. How many riders can still say that these days. |
