Apple - Highroad Cycling Team ~ Tour de Langkawi
Pinktay3
Awesome, awesome news. Everything is set to race. I'm waiting on Transverts and NC's, but i can race without them. Instead of doing a big full calender in the first posts, i will just post a Month Preview at the start of each Calender (in PCM time) Month.

February

Tour de Langkawi

The team isn't really expecting much from the Tour de Langkawi, with it being much more of a form builder for the larger races. At this point, not all of the team's schedule is finalized, but it is heavily known that the team will focus largely on the Tour of Turkey, Tour of California and the various National Championships held in July. However, the ultimate goals for this season are a berth at the Vuelta a Espana and claiming 10 victories throughout the season.

Spoiler
The team will race in 2 groups of 8, split between riders of roughly equal ability. The stronger riders will be in the 2nd group, and the lesser riders in the 1st.

The Squad

Finally i have the squad for you. After much deliberation and pen marking, we have come up with the 2 teams for the year. The teams will swap roles at the NC, with both teams being eligable for selection.

Breaking News - Davis Australian Champion

Allan Davis has been crowned the Australia Road Race Champion after narrowly beating out Karl Menzies and Simon Gerrans in a 4 man sprint. Luke Roberts had the unfortunate duty of leading out the group on the run-in to the line and just couldn't hold of the finishing speed of the others.

Matthew Wilson bested Cadel Evans for 5th, 23 seconds back, with Baden Cooke coming in 7th, a further 21 seconds in arrears.

Matthew Goss, Stuart Shaw and Simon Clarke brought home a heavily limping peloton of 9 (the largest group to finish together) in what was one of the most exciting National Championships of recent years.

Congrats to Davis on the win. It sounded like a close race

Tour de Langkawi

The Tour de Langkawi is a mere day away, and with a strong field, the battle will be fierce. Although only early in the season, we expect a hard fought battle for stages and the GC, and with many top riders still searching for form, it really is anyone's race.

We are expecting Bouhanni to do reasonably well in the sprints, and would like a few top-3's from him. With no dedicated lead-out however, it will be solely up to him to catch the right train to the line.

For the GC, we have a 2 pronged attack, with Talansky the outright leader, but Warbasse there to clean up any messes. We also expect Boswell to go well on Stage 4.

Our top priority for this race, is 2 podium's and a top-10 on GC. We also aim to be, although it is not a priority, to be in most of the breaks.

The Favourites for this race are;

Siutsou - HTC
Knees - Sky
Uran - Sky

Tour de Langkawi

Stage 1

Short, hard, fast and flat. Not really any expectations for today, except we would like to be in the break and fight for the KOM's with either Talbott or Boswell. Bouhanni told us before the race that, although he wasn't fussed about a lead-out from us, he wanted to have a crack at the sprint today, so delivering him to the sprint in a good position would be a good occurrence today as well.

Favourites

Eeckhout - An Post (Not our Eeckhout)
Gasparotto - Astana
Bouhanni - Apple

The Race

Right from the gun, R. Pollock (Drapac) attacks. Following are; J. Hosek (PSK), D. Ospina (Columbia), N. Brown (Trek), T. Phinney (BMC), S. Janiszewski (CCC), M. Schmitt and A. Pinfold (Both UHC), M. Kwiatkowski (RadioShack) and D. Talbott (Apple).

The pack, led by HTC, Farnese Vini, An Post and Astana, mustn't be happy with this break as the gap is soon being decreased dramatically.

Soon, the breakaway has been completely brought back, as more attacks try their attempt at TV Time.

With Ospina, Kwiatkowski, Brown, Pinfold, Phinney, Pollock, Hosek and Janiszewski being joined by C. Benedetti and B. Huzarski (Both NetApp), J. McCarty (SpiderTech), D. Foder (Glud & M) and Talbott, the leading 13 riders look to have been given the all clear, leading by 1:50 with 22km's of the 93km's ridden.

At the first IS, Brown takes the 6 point ahead of Phinney and Ospina as the gap extends to 2:45 with 58km's left.

At the first KOM pass of the Tour, Talbott takes maximum points ahead of McCarty and Ospina as the gap falls just below 2 minutes with 48 km's remaining.

After the KOM, Talbott decides to talk a solo break, using his momentum over the hill to make the break. His lead shoots out to 45 seconds very quickly.

With 37km's remaining, the gap dips under 1:30 for the first time since the breaks inception. The break leads the peloton by 1:05 with Talbott a further 25 seconds in front of the break.

Talbott takes maximum sprint points at the 2nd and final IS of the day, with Brown and Foder taking the lesser points as the gap approaches 1 minute.

With 30km's to go, Talbott leads the break by 20 seconds, and has a gap of 55 seconds to the peloton.

With 25km's left, the break, aside from Talbott, is caught. Talbott maintains a 15 second lead.

The 2nd and final KOM was won by McCarty with F. Goesinnen after a risky move out of the pack. 3rd was taken by J. Jufre Pou (Astana) from the head of the peloton.

As the sprint trains conform, the break has been swallowed up and there are 3 distinct trains, An Post for Eeckhout, Astana for Gasparotto and Apple for Bouhanni.

Coming into the final 10km's, a huge crash in the peloton takes place, wiping out a third of the peloton. Big names caught out are; B. Hermans (RadioShack), M. Albasini (HTC), J. Kocjan (TT1), P. De Negri (Farnese Vini), S. Pauwels (Sky) and V. Gustov, C. Anker Sorensen and D. Navarro (All Saxo Bank). No Apple riders have been held up.

With 3km's to go, Bouhanni was nicely placed in 5th wheel behind Eeckhout. As the sprint started, Iglinsky (Astana) made a good lead-out for Gasparotto (Astana), but with Visconti (Farnese Vini), JP. Forero (Columbia) and Lacombe (SpiderTech) right on his back wheel, it looks unlikely for the leading Italian. At this point, Bouhanni is way out of the sprint and is limping in home.

The 3 following Gasparotto all jump together, and Forero gets the early lead followed by Lacombe, but with Visconti coming from the prime position, he rockets up to the front and takes an impressive victory as Gasparotto, Forero, Lacombe and Eeckout (An Post) round out the top-5.

Bouhanni picks it up again to finish in 17th place, our best for the day.

All in all, not to bad of a stage for the boys. We knew the form wasn't really there, and we still managed to get the break and a top-20. Talbott is well placed in the KOM, being 2nd to McCarty, Bouhanni was the youngest on the stage, but Phinney takes that jersey because of time bonuses, and the team only had 1 rider lose time. As the boys' form get better, watch out.

Stage 2

Almost as flat as yesterday, with only with a couple of small-medium kicks in the start and middle of the stage to add difficulty. A bit longer, at 175km's its definitely one for the sprinters again. We have the same view as yesterday, just try to set Bouhanni up for a sprint and get Talbott in the break to secure some early KOM points before resting up for stage 4.

The Race

The first attacks came from B. King (RadioShack) and M. Schmitt (UHC). This was to be the break of the day before Talbott bridged across to create a 3 man leading group.

The chasing teams of Astana, HTC, SpiderTech, Endura and An Post must be happy with this break, as the gap quickly opens up to 2 minutes.

As the gap starts to open up even more F. Goesinnen (Drapac) and J. Hosek (PSK) attempt to make it across the ever extending gap.

However, if R. Hayles (Endura), J Nielson and T. Vinther (Both Glud & M) aren’t careful, the bunch mightn’t appreciate an 8-man leading group.

As Goesinnen and Hosek make it across, the front group leads the chasing 3 by 1 minute, and has a further 1:45 on the bunch.

Finally, after a big effort, Hayles, Nielson and Vinther make it across the gap, which at this point has reached its maximum so far of 3:30.

At the first, and only, KOM pass of the day, Talbott darted away, only to be passed on the line by Hosek, with Vinther rounding out the top-3. With 125km’s left, the gap is at 6:05 and still extending.

At the IS with 105km’s to go, Nielson leads it out from the front and snatches the 6 second time bonus and the cash prize, with Hayles in 2nd and Talbott grabbing the last 2 second bonus.

The gap has extended even further to 8:35. If ever there was a day the break was well positioned, today would be it. Only 105km’s remain with it all downhill except for 2 almost insignificant hills. At 8 members, this is also a relatively large break, giving a larger than usual chance at victory.

A bit reminiscent of Stage 1, after the sprint point, Talbott gets a gap on the others, and floats out the front at about 20 seconds.

“It wasn’t so much that I attacked, more that the others just didn’t follow”

Alas, he was caught 8 km’s later.

The maximum gap the breakaway received was 8:50 at the 90km’s to go mark, before the peloton started chasing. Still, we see the same teams chasing, although with one helper from Farnese Vini.

80km’s to go and the gap has been lowered to 7 minutes.

70km’s to go and the gap is reduced to 6:15.

At 50km’s to go, the gap is still being brought back, with the gap at 4:45.

At the climb that peaks 41km’s to the finish, Talbott puts in a little dig. With 40km’s of flat between him and the finish, he’ll be looking to get another rider or 2 with him and willing to work.

In the end it was a bit of a confused tactic, as he got away, but the group caught up to him. Gap is at 3:45.

30km’s left to race, and the gap is under 3 minutes, at 2:40. Its looking less and less likely that this group will stay away.

25km’s and the gap is 1:55.

20 left and the gap has come down at around the same rate as the past 50km’s to 1:25.

The gap dips under a minute for the first time since the beginning of the stage at the 16km mark as the sprinters teams, including Apple, come to the fore.

Only 10km’s left and the break still has 30 seconds on the bunch. It would be looking good for the break, if it weren’t for the charging bunch behind that’s hitting 50km/h on a small 2% incline.

Talbott, along with Hayles, Schmitt, Nielson and Vinther get reeled in with 8 km’s left, as Craddock hits the front for Apple.

3.5km’s to go, and Apple and Astana lead the peloton, 15 seconds behind King and Hosek, but Bouhanni has lost his lead-out coming into the sprint. The best positioned sprtiner is J. Forero (Columbia) on Gasparotto’s (Astana) wheel.

3 left to race, and there's no more breakaway as Astana have sole lead of the peloton after Eeckhout and Mattheu slowed to find Bouhanni, who now has his lead-out wheel.

Boxed in, the Apple train decides to leave the station early, with still a long way to go to the line.

About half-way into the sprint, Mattheau launches Bouhanni, and with his quick turn of speed rockets straight from 10th to a top -5

Gasparotto took the early lead, only to have first Forero and then Visconti come round him.

Visconti takes the win with Gasparotto fighting back for 2nd and Forero lacking a bit at the end for 3rd. Eeckhout (An Post) takes 4th with Roulston (HTC) rounding out the top-5. In the battle for 6th, Lacombe has inches on Bouhanni with just meters left, but Bouhanni takes it on the line. PSK rider Buchacek is very impressive in 8th, with Scholze (CCC) and Blain (Endura) completing the top-10.

A good stage from the team with Bouhanni grabbing a top-10. Hopefully with his form getting better and better so will his results. We tried a different tactic today and put a lead-out in place for Nacer, but clearly it still needs some refining, as well as the acquision of a dedicated lead-out man. We currently hold a top-10 position in all classifications except the GC, but we have Bouhanni in 13th, with only Time Bonuses between him and 1st. Talbott managed to take the KOM, and will wear that jersey tomorrow. Despite finishing as the best young rider 2 days in a row, Bouhanni only holds 2nd in that thanks to Phinney's time bonuses of the 1st stage. With 10 Sprint points, Bouhanni has 10th position in that, and the team is currently ranked number 1 thanks to the high finishes of our lead-out riders.

Nice finish from Bouhanni in Langkawi Wink

I am a bit afraid that you don't get much views-replies because of lack of pictures. You definetely should try with them!

TT, yes I know and I'm dreadfully sorry. I would include pictures but I'm playing a different DB from Jak, and all the jerseys are from Jaks DB, especially the Conti teams (CCC is now MTN etc) so I believe including pictures would only downgrade the report even more. I will however try a different reporting style to day, and try to limit the amount of words I use.

Maybe you should choose another DB, or even try a whole new career? And in the PCM12 story's there is an thread were they give do and don't how to make your story attractive. Hope you can use this Smile

Pinktay3
Yes, BikeRoel i was considering doing both of those, but i really like the direction this stories heading and want to keep going with it, and changing the DB will delete the save game. At the moment, it's highly likely that i'll have PCM13 when it is released, and then i'll start with a brand new team, story and idea. (Hopefully an MTN one). But anyways, on with more reports.

Stage 3

The final flat stage before we hit the hills and then the mountain. Highly doubt it being anything other than a bunch kick. Today Apple will try a different tactic, and lead from the front. Bouhanni will also have a (attempted) lead-out train dedicated to him. With no breakaway rider for the days stage, a top-5 is the desired goal within the stage.

The Race

C. Benedetti (NetApp), C. Vives (SpiderTech), S. Janiszewski (CCC), D. Foder (Glud & M) and R. Pollock (Drapac) form the early break, with Benedetti nabbing the only KOM from Vives and Janiszewski. Towards the 1st sprint of the day, B. Hermans (RadioShack) attacks followed by M. Velits (HTC) as Foder, Benedetti and Pollock take the sprint points of 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. At this point the initial break has 2 minutes, with Hermans and Velits 50 seconds in front of the Apple lead peloton.

With 85km’s C. Jones (Trek) attacks, and joins the break 10km’s later. With 75km’s left to race, the gap has been reduced to 1:30. Clearly Hermans is a too dangerous rider.

At the second sprint point with 65km’s left, Foder just manages to hold out a charging Pollock, with Jones claiming 3rd. The gap remains steady at 1:15.

With around 50km’s to go, R. Bertogliati (TT1) attacks. He makes the gap with 45km’s left, but the break now only has 1:35 thanks to Apple on the front.

Disaster! As Apple ramps up the pace, race leader, G. Visconti (Farnese Vini) falls. He can get back up, but 2 minutes behind a fast moving bunch, its unsure whether he’ll make it back on. 6 team mates drop back.

30km’s to go, and S. Pauwels (Sky) darts off the front and although its unusual to see him as he likes the hilly stuff much, much more, he catches the back of the front group with a gap of 1 minute.

Meanwhile, Visconti is now safely nestled in the peloton again thanks to the work of his team mates.

At the 20km mark, the break is beginning to become convincing, with a gap of still around 1 minute despite hard chasing from the bunch. Not long after, the in-fighting between breakaway companions starts, as Hermans, Janiszewski, Pauwels, Bertogliati and Jones leave the other behind.

After extending to a maximum of 1:30, the leading 5 are now under control and are being brought back.

With 5 remaining it is 1 rider against the rest, as Pollock still holds 25 seconds over the rest of the field. With 4 left, Eeckhout takes his turn at the front, and smashes it to bits with Mattheau and Bouhanni struggling to hold wheels. Of the sprinters, only A. Scholze (CCC), L. S. Haedo (Saxo Bank) and A. Blain (Endura) can follow.

After a perfect lead-out by Eeckhout and Mattheau, Pollock is caught, and Bouhanni released. Despite having a good 3 bike lengths on the other sprinters at the start of the sprint, Bouhanni just doesn’t seem to have the form at the moment, and is quickly passed, first by Gasparotto, then Lacombe, Forero and Gasparotto’s lead-out, Iglinsky.

Gasparotto takes it from Forero and Visconti. Lacombe does great to get 4th, with Bouhanni in 5th, Blain in 6th, Talansky and Iglinksy 7th and 8th with Kocjan and Haedo rounding out the top-10.

“And Bouhanni in 5th with ah, hang on a minute, there’s 2 Apple riders there. One is Bouhanni, and the others one is, um, difficult to tell, it looks like a climber or smaller rider. Oh, it’s Talansky, what a ride by the young climber to get himself up to 7th on the stage, only 2 places behind his team’s sprinter. If he’s keeping up now on the flats, whats he going to be like on the climbs tomorrow and the day after.”

These were Phil Ligget’s comments on a young, fast and in-form Andrew Talansky the day before the Climbs. Not even Phil himself knew what these comments meant.

A good stage that was much better than it seemed. We did a lot of work today up the front and it paid off with Bouhanni close to a podium and Talansky netting a top-10 on a sprint stage. We're still yet to crack the top-10 on GC, but are still technically not any time behind, as its still only time bonuses separating 1st through to 61st. Tablott still maintains his lead in the KOM Classification going into tomorrow, Bouhanni has 9th on points and the team has 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th and 10th, as well as 26th in the Youth Classification. We are also the 2nd ranked team. Tomorrow will be a hard race with not a hard finish, but hills everywhere to drain everyone energy. We have 4 options for the win tomorrow, and we hope to get at least a top-5.
