Hello!

We're already the fifth of February, and it's about time to update this site. With all the final preparation training and the first race, I've been busy. But I've found some time now to fill you all in on the start of my first season here.

Bart

First of all, Bart wanted me to tell you he's very busy nowadays. It's official, he'll be Boonen's lieutenant for most part of the season, so a function like that takes up a lot of time. He'll try to report out of Qatar, but he can't promise anything.

Australian NC + Tour Down Under

Simon Gerrans started the cycling season by winning the Australian National Championship. By a skillful attack in the final kilometers, he managed to avoid a sprint with a small group.

Then Omega Pharma - Quickstep won the first UCI World Tour Race of the year, the first stage of the Tour Down Under. Boonen proves he's back after a couple of bad years by winning two stages and the Points Jersey Down Under. Dries Devenyns had an excellent day on Willunga Hill and finished 5th on the overall classification!

Dries carried his form to Marseille and took a nice top 10 place there as well.

Coppa costa degli Etruschi

This is it, my first professional race for the Omega Pharma - Quickstep team. Let's take a look at the profile.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/c01.jpg

It's classified as flat, but I've no doubt it'll be a hard race. For many it's the first of the season and every km will be hard with such a form. I appeared at the start as a team-mate. I was to lead out Matteo Trentin for the sprint today.

For this first race I just expected to do my job. This was not about personal goals, but about the team and building up form. I may be a World Champion in the field, here I'm just a new guy!

As I expected, today's race was fairly hard. But it all got a lot easier as soon as the hills were mostly behind us. I spend some time with Tony Gallopin, I never knew he was such a funny guy.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/c02.jpg

But with 30km left to go, the pace went way up and every word was one too many. I started getting ready for the sprint when Nikolas Maes said he didn't have the best legs. So I would be the final lead-out for Trentin, which is a great responsibility and a great way to prove myself!

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/c03.jpg

In taking the final turn of the race, I started the sprint, at Matteo's command. I was going strong and had brilliant legs today, a great day to have a great day, if you know what I mean!

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/c04.jpg

But then, obviously, Matteo had to pass me. When he did, and the finish wasn't that far ahead, I decided to keep going strong, maybe there was something in it for me.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/c05.jpg

Matteo gave a good impression but lost speed in the final 50m, Bozic used that and passed him. Very unfortunate, he almost took the third win for the team so early in the season.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/c06.jpg

I'm amazed that I made the top 10, I still can't believe it. This is giving me confidence, I made the right choice! When I hit the right form, I'll be pretty good, maybe! Here are the results:

Well, this exceeds my biggest expectations here. I knew I was a fast guy in cyclo-cross, but maybe I can become a decent sprinter on the road, as well. I certainly hope so. Anyway, I had a great time, and we opened up a bottle of champagne that night on Matteo's performance. See you for the next race, hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

fernando97: Thanks Wink Jan is lucky to start his first race with a 64 fitness, others only had in their fifties.

PCM Rulezz:I thought you'd like that! It won't stop here, Boonen will have a great year all around, I'm sure of it Grin

Jakstar22: Thanks!

Tour of Qatar - Stage 1

Welcome to Qatar, a barren land. To most, its race is boring. But to me, this must be the most exciting race I've done in my life. The reason why? I will be included in Tom's lead-out and I will be his lieutenant. Add the fact that we brought Tony Martin and that there's a strong wind, we'll rip this race apart.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/q01.jpg

I spend all day keeping Tom out of the wind. While doing this, I constantly sang Easy Ride from The Doors in my head. That helped to keep me concentrated and it kept me going.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/q02.jpg

It was a hard day, the pace Liquigas set was not one to relax by. But they had no one left to lead out Peter Sagan, while we set up our lead-out train flawlessly. Our train: Kwiatkowski, Martin, Dejaeghere, Chicchi, Ciolek, Boonen. We're trying something with three sprinters at the moment (two lead-outs and the main sprinter). On training, it always worked out great.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/q03.jpg

And when Tony Martin took the lead, he ripped the peloton to pieces. Many were struggling to hang on. Boonen's victory was in the air.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/q04.jpg

Finally I took over, and my job was to keep the pace going hard that no one could threaten our train.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/q05.jpg

I successfully kept the pace high and then our sprinters took over. I looked over my shoulder and saw a ripped open field.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/q06.jpg

Tom took an easy win! Gerald Ciolek takes a beautiful second place! While my first result of the season is exactly the same as my brother's, a ninth place!

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/q07.jpg

It was an excellent day for the team. It's great to see that all our sprinting training has not remained fruitless. Tomorrow is the Team Time Trial. I don't know if Jan told you but I might be too busy to report. However, I'll try my best to keep you updated! Oh, and before I forget, here's the results:
