@SN/Heine
Thanks for the praise, but it's certainly not job well done yet, certain other CT teams *cough* Privatbank *cough* got more than me in the first 'round' of free agents, though my leaders may end up better (tbd).
2nd Set of Signings, Including the Team Leader
The biggest news today out of Magna-Ryanair is the acquisition of Thomas Rohregger from Milka-AVG.
Rohregger joins the recent trend of older stage racers finding employment at CTour teams. Rohregger will almost certainly be amongst the division's top climbers, but is also a capable time trialist compared to some of his immediate rivals. While the team calendar has not been decided as of yet, the team will give strong consideration of Rohregger appearing at any race with significant mountains and time trial kilometers. Perhaps he will lead the team at the Volta a Portugal....?
The team was able to announce two further signings, though they certainly lack the pomp and circumstance of the Rohregger signing.
Paidi O'Brien is an Irish rider mainly known for his skill on the hills. He's not a racewinner, but will be expected to provide support in the hillier races. Expect him at the FBD Tour of Ireland as well.
Manuel Belletti is an Italian sprinter, picked up for the minimum. Though the team had not previously expected to have much of a focus on flat races, until Marco Haller has developed, the acquisition of Belletti means that between Speirs and Belletti the team can field a sprinter in any race that could conceivably be won by one. Belletti is more comfortable on the hills than Speirs, so they should not overlap too much. Of course the possibility of one leading out the other also remains to be considered.
All in all, the management at Magna-Ryanair has been pleased with the progression of the transfer season, but is engaged in several bidding wars for some desirable riders. However, with the aformentioned targets, (except for Rohregger) acquired for 50k wage, there is plenty in the salary cap available to get another solid leader or two.

More Signings, Squad Close to Completion?
Magna-Ryanair continues to add to their squad. Let's look at some of the recent acquisitions.
Carl Naibo
Naibo is a strong French climber that is comfortable in the mountains. At Magna-Ryanair he will have the chance to lead some races, but he will also act as a helper for Rohregger for others.
Alexander Schrangl
Schrangl is a solid domestique, equally at home on the hillier races or when the climbs get really steep. A nice helper to keep the leader fresh or to steal a stage win.
Antione Matteau
Matteau's signing is a nod to both Manga's Canadian roots and clothing sponsor Lululemon. Matteau will be used in many different roles. He's strong on the flat, decent against the clock and is reasonable in the hilly races. He's also known for his attacking prowess, something that is lacking in the current squad.
Arnaud Demare
The second Frenchman to join the squad, Demare is on loan from Puma-SAP to gain some experience at this level. Demare will be used in hilly races where his great kick could propel him to strong finishes, or in other races where he will lead out either Speirs or Belletti. It is a pleasure to have someone that will clearly go on to great things begin his career at Magna-Ryanair
Petr Vakoc
Vakoc is another loanee from the Pro Tour, this time from Milka-AVG. Vakoc may go on to great things, but here, he will be a worker.
Michal Kolar
Kolar is another Loanee from Milka-AVG and very much resembles the current abilities of Vakoc and Paulus, get used to life in the peleton Michal!
Magna-Ryanair is looking for a few more signings, including a hilly leader and perhaps another rider on loan to join the current crop of talented youngsters, but despite panic at the headquarters for a time, there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel.

2013 Team Presentation
After a hectic and stressful transfer period completed, Magna-Ryanair held a press conference at it's Vienna HQ to introduce all of the new riders to the assorted press.
Thomas Rohregger
Age: 31
Role:Stage Race Leader
Wage: 120,000
Key Stats: 77 Moun, 74TT
The biggest acquisition for Magna-Ryanair was Rohregger from Milka-AVG. He's one of, if not the best stage racer in the Continental Division and as his 18th place in last year's Vuelta proves, he can hang with the best of them. Rohregger is the star of the team and much is expected from him and in order to get the best out of him he will be traveling to 4 continents this season.
Carl Naibo
Age: 31
Role: Stage Race Lieutenant
Wage: 60,000
Key Stats: 75 Moun
Naibo will ride a varied schedule this year. In some of our more important races he will be supporting Rohregger, but he will also get his chance to lead the team as well. While he is overshadowed by Rohregger somewhat, having Naibo in the squad gives the team great flexibility at an eminently affordable wage.
Perikles Ilias
Age: 27
Role: Hilly Leader
Wage: 80,000
Key Stats: 75 Hill, 76 FIG
The last free agent to sign for Magna-Ryanair was an important one. Perikles is the real life 2012 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Champion and having conquered that world he converts to road racing for Magna-Ryanair. The coaching staff have been working diligently on his hill riding capabilities and he has shown quick improvement. Ilias is the best rider on the short climbs on the team but other riders have better finishing kicks. He is the nominal leader on the hilly races, but could be also used protecting someone like Demare
Isaac Speirs
Age: 25
Role: Sprinter
Wage: 50,000
Key Stats: 76 Sprint, 80 ACC
Speirs was one of the first riders to attach himself to the Magna-Ryanair team and will be the key Irish rider for the team in 2013. Speirs has bounced around various teams including being on Vespa - Aprilia - De Rosa last year but now he will get his chance to lead the sprints. What sets Speirs apart from his rivals is his deadly acceleration and decisive downhill skills. Rather than splash the cash on a main sprinter Magna-Ryanair has two main sprinters in Speirs and Belleti and they will be paired together in many races to help each other out. Speirs will be the focal point at many races and we hope he can bring podiums and wins to the team
Manuel Belletti
Age: 28
Role: Sprinter
Wage: 50,000
Key Stats: 76 Sprint, 77 ACC
The lone Italian on the team will be co-sprinter with Speirs. He lacks Speirs' acceleration, but is a better climber so he'll often be deployed in stage races where other managers will be scared off of entering their top sprinters for fear of them dropping out.
Markus Eibegger
Age: 29
Role: Luxury Domestique
Wage: 50,000
Key Stats: 73 Moun, 72 Hill
Eibegger was an absolute must have for the team and we are pleased to have a man of his talents on our team. He's a helper, no doubt about it, but he'll have his share of races where the team works for him, especially in Austria where the home fans will spur Eibegger one to greater heights. He'll get a mix of being a helper for Rohregger and being with Ilias in the hilly races. His finishing kick should not be underestimated and he may be able to take a few surprise results
Alexander Schrangl
Age: 28
Role: Luxury Domestique
Wage: 50,000
Key Stats: 73 Moun, 73 Hill
Every team needs a rider like Schrangl who can protect their leader for as long as possible before dropping off. He's uncomfortable on the flat (worst on the team!) so he'll be deployed on the races where climbing is the norm.
Antoine Matteau
Age: 24
Role: Fighter, Attacker, General Annoyance
Wage: 50,000
Key Stats: 79 FIG, 72 Flat
We wanted an aggressive rider who we could put into the breakaway and could cause havoc. Of course the natural choice was to find a Canadian! Matteau is a solid allrounder with a penchant for attacking. He also is a good time trialist and a nice lead out. Expect to see Antoine doing a variety of roles over the season and hopefully taking a stage win a the Tour de Beauce!
Dominik Hrinkow
Age: 25
Role: Domestique
Wage: 50,000
Key Stats: 71 Moun, 70 Hill
Hrinkow is a solid, if unspectacular domestique. He does everything reasonably well, but nothing to a spectacular level. He's happy to be riding in an Austrian team and maybe he can surprise from a breakaway once.
Arnaud Demare *On loan
Age: 22
Role: Future TdF stage winner
Wage: 260,000 (130,000 payed by Magna-Ryanair)
Key Stats: 70 Hill, 74 Sprint
Demare is one of the up and coming big things in French cycling and we are pleased to have him for one year at Magna-Ryanair. Demare will get varied duties including leading out our sprinters. Most importantly there are few riders in the CTour that can climb hills like Demare and then put in a solid effort in the sprint at the end. We think Demare will score victories if the peleton doesn't work hard to drop him.
Andreas Graf
Age: 28
Role: Time-Trialist
Wage: 50,000
Key Stats: 74 TT
Graf will race a limited schedule of races this year. He'll be key in the TTTs at some of the races we will be attending and could maybe get some top 10s in some ITTs. He has an outside shot at the Austrian TT championship against Rohregger, Zoidl, and Brandle.
Paidi O'Brien
Age: 29
Role: Domestique
Wage: 50,000
Key Stats: 70 Hill
The 2nd Irish rider on the team is a hilly helper, no more, no less.
Andreas Hofer
Age: 22
Role: Time Trial Prospect
Wage: 50,000
Key Stats: 71 TT
Andreas Hofer is the future of Austrian time-trialing (willfilling ignoring Brandle...). Even at 22 he is one of the better TTers on the squad and will be deployed at any race with a TTT. The main goal this season will be to continue his development
Zico Waeytens *On Loan
Age: 22
Role: Token Belgian
Wage: 50,000
Key Stats: 70 Hill
On Loan from HTC Nieuwsblad, Waeytens is marginally useful. He does climb reasonably well but will probably be fetching water most of the time.
Daniel Paulus
Age: 20
Role: Future of Austrian climbing, Apple of my eye
Wage: 50,000
Key Stats: 69 Hill, unlimited potential
Paulus isn't much to look at now.... nor will he be for a few years yet, but he has the potential to be if not the next Denifl, but the next Rohregger, which is convenient as he is on the team!
Marco Haller
Age: 22
Role: Austria's 3rd best sprinter
Wage: 50,000
Key Stats: 71 sprint, 72 acc
Already Austria's 3rd best sprinter (stop laughing!) Haller is going to be big. Like gonna be on the Pro-Tour big. Anyway for now he's more of a lead-out but next year...he'll still be a lead out.
Petr Vakoc *On loan
Age: 21
Role: Domestique, water carrier extraordinaire
Wage: 75,000
Key Stats: 68 Hill
Vakoc may well go on to great things, but he's probably not going to achieve them here.
Michal Kolar *On loan
Age: 21
Role: Whipping boy, Designated Driver
Wage: 50,000
Key Stats: 68 Moun
Every team needs a whipping boy, and we brought one in on loan to make sure we don't damage any of our precious talents. Hey, picking on the foreign kid is always a solid move!

Even though you didn't sign Pfannberger I will root for you this year! Then in 2 years you sell me Paulus cheaply Also, good luck with my old rider Rohregger, I hope he does well, specially in his TTs as this (hopefully) is the last year he can ride the TT with the austrian champions jersey

@Miguel
Thanks! I think my top guys are slightly better than yours, but you're depth is better and I fear Dall'Antonia like you wouldn't believe. Also Duggan is way better than Ilias and that is going to cause havoc for my goals.
@Vien
Going to be a mix of everything. I gave Rohregger 52 racedays that I thought he could compete on. I probably picked too many hilly races considering my reletive weakness on those races, but I thought it was better to take a risk on those stages rather than put Naibo up against some of the division's top climbers. Plus I have a bunch of decent hill riders that might score points. The sprinters will get a few races of their own too, but none of the really flat races, because my sprinters can climb too damnit!
@Heine
Pfannberger was way down in my list of domestiques, as Matzbacher was just better and I didn't even get to sign him! Which was bad planning on my part, really. You can have Paulus on loan when you are in the PT and he needs to get maxed! .
Rohregger and Brandle are the favourites for the TT jersey this year. Graf and Zoidl have outside shots, but the hillier the course the more it favours Rohregger i think. Then once Rohregger declines, Brandle will probably win it for the next 5 years unless Hofer gets lucky!

Right, I couldn't remember if you traded Duggan or Vrecer. Yeah Vrecer and Roman should definitely give me headaches (many of them I'm sure)

Our teams are very similar in terms of stats, but you have a bit more sprinting depth. Hopefully Rohregger will leave the Africa tour alone |

Looks like some good races for Rohregger, the C1 race in Austria has traditionally had a red hot field. But Rohregger will be a dangerous wildcard for sure if he races. A fair chance of nabbing your win goal too.
Best of luck.

Januray Overview
January is set to be a reasonably calm month for Magna-Ryanair, with only three races that the team will participate in. 2 Hilly races in the Clasico San Cristobal and the GP Kathmandu will be balanced with the first opportunity for our sprinters to stretch their legs at the Trofeo Luis Puig.
Clasico San Cristobal
The Route
The route in Cuba is a very hilly one that will feature 40.2 kilometers of climbing, and will severely test those without the legs to survive the hills. An uphill finish precludes the chance that a sprinter will win and so the winner will be the one that is the strongest on the day.
Our team:
Perikles Ilias *Leader*
Carl Naibo
Arnaud Demare
Zico Waeytens
Andreas Hofer
Paidi O'Brien
Michal Kolar
Our squad for this Cuban race will feature 5 riders with hill ratings of 70+. Perikles Ilias will lead the hilly squad and not for the last time this season. Carl Naibo is here in case the mountain stat proves to be more important in the race. Demare, Waeytens and O'Brien will provide the protection and look for opportunities to attack. We hope that Ilias can nab a top 10 placing in this race.
GP Kathmandu
Analysis:
The rugged and long race will be a difficult one for any rider. The climbs come fast and furious and while there are not the steepest climbs, maxing at 10.7%, when you put such a climb into a circut, legs will be fatigued! A downhill finish invites the chance that there will be some drama on the final climb.
Our team:
Perikles Ilias *Leader*
Markus Eibegger
Dominik Hrinkow
Zico Waeytens
Paidi O'Brien
Daniel Paulus
Michal Kolar
Ilias is again the nominal leader but this is not a route that really favours him (too long) so Markus Eibegger and Dominik Hrinkow have been drafted in as they are more comfortable in longer races. This is a race that doesn't really suit any of our riders, so we will be happy with a top 15.
Trofeo Luis Puig
Analysis:
An early hilly section leads into a final and decisive section that is flat as a pancake. While those early hills may not be enough to provide a decisive breakaway, it is possible that those sprinters who struggle to climb may be fatigued by the early exertions.
Our team:
Isaac Speirs *Co-Leader*
Manuel Belletti *Co-Leader*
Perikles Ilias
Arnaud Demare
Michal Kolar
Petr Vakoc
Marco Haller
The full sprint team is here in force with Speirs, Belletti, Demare and Haller providing what should be an excellent sprint train for this race. Our trend of bringing our sprinters to races with hills rather than the pancake flat races starts here. Ilias is here to provide cover for the weaker hilly riders and Kolar and Vakoc are the designated waterboys. A top 10 or better is expected.

He trained him up to 75 hill iirc. I think Ilias will have a tough race in Cuba as the hills seem quite long, think he will have better chances on easier hilly courses. Still good luck!
