Thanks to all of you.
I will probably tweak his stats now and then depending on how he is doing. His best stats atm. is MO, HIL and REC.
EDIT: Downhill and Fighter are actually the highest..

The last stage of Vuelta a Andalucía was once again with an uphill finish. Before the race Luis talked to some journalists mentioning something about an attack. But no one really knew what he was up to.
He sat along his teammates in the peloton all day. At least till the top of the category 3 climb some 15 kilometers from the finish. Just before the top Rui Costa decided to attack and the first one on his wheel was the young Mexican.
Luis couldn’t follow Rui Costas pace up the climb but at the descent his never-seen-before skills was showed to the world. With some incredible technical riding at the speed of light he blasted past both Rui Costas group and also the leading group a couple seconds later. His descending speed led the minds of experts back to the likes of Savoldelli but many thought that this was even faster.
On the final little climb he lost momentum and with the explosion of a rocket Rui Costa came back to win the stage. Luis did take second place and that was enough for the overall second place as well. His only victory in this race was the young riders jersey.
Stage result
1. Rui Costa - Movistar
2. Luis Jiménez - Caja Rural - (+11")
3. Carlos Barredo - Rabobank - (+36")
GC
1. Rui Costa - Movistar
2. Luis Jiménez - Caja Rural - (+26")
3. Carlos Barredo - Rabobank - (+53")
After the race I, Mikel Vázquez, Spanish journalist, had the opportunity to talk to him for the first time.
Mikel: Luis, what a mind blowing ride down that descent! You must be exhausted?
Luis: You think that was mind blowing? (…) Yeah, I’m pretty exhausted, so I need some rest now.
Mikel: Are you satisfied with this race, 2nd place is good for an unknown rider like you still are?
Luis: Satisfied? (…) Who are satisfied with 2nd place? *laughing* I’m sorry I have to go now.

A great performance here. He's still very unknown to the public but the real cycling-fans and the peloton will start to know him a little bit |

The next time we saw our young Mexican wonderkid in action was in the mountains of Murcia. Up against big names such as Anton, Cunego and Danielson, Luis looked like the underdog.
On the first of the two stages, the mountain stage, his team Caja Rural was pulling the peloton. On the climb it made the peloton crack, and it ended Antons chances that day. Luis was wearing the Continental Tour leader jersey.
Atop of the climb Luis decided to attack. Nobody was reacting so he got a gap.
On the descent before the finish he catched up with the survivors of the morning breakaway group…
… and in the sprint he was the strongest by length. Luis took a great win after an incredible effort down the climb.
Stage result
1. Luis Jiménez - Caja Rural
2. Christopher Juul-Jensen - Saxo Bank - (s.t.)
3. Jacobus Venter - MTN - (s.t.)
---
6. Damiano Cunego - Lampre - (+53")
7. Tom Danielson - Garmin (+53")
---
33. Igor Anton - Euskaltel - (+2'07")
Beating such big names as Cunego and Anton really got him on a high. He told me this after the race.
"What a race! I felt soo good out there. (…) My training pays off at the moment so I need to thank my coach and my manager. (…) If I can win this race now? Everything can happen but the other guys are big names. (…) I’m definitely ready for the TT!"
And so he was. He defended his leader jersey very well on the short TT and was therefore the winner of the race. Now he felt ready for his first big challenge, Vuelta Ciclista a Catalunya.
Final GC
1. Luis Jiménez - Caja Rural
2. Christopher Juul-Jensen - Saxo Bank - (+32")
3. Jacobus Venter - MTN - (+33")
---
6. Tom Danielson - Garmin - (+57")
---
15. Damiano Cunego - Lampre - (+1'20") |

Madrid 2035, Mikel Vázquez, Spanish journalist.
Okay, so before we move on telling Luis Jiménez story I found a man that surely can help us with this. Mark Russell was the commentator on Eurosport back in the days when Luis was still riding.
Mikel: “So Mark, you can certainly help us by retelling this kid’s story, right?”
Mark: “Absolutely Mikel, I have followed him since I first commentated a race with him. Was back in San Luis 2012 I think. He was unknown back then and he suddenly attacked the peloton. His aggressive style was a joy to watch! I was sure about that he could be great one day, and he did.”
Mikel: “Now you say that he became great. Actually the next race in our retelling is the race where the cycling world really saw him in action for the first time.”
Mark: “I presume that you mean Catalunya? He showed of some fantastic skills in that race. But he started slow didn’t he?”
Well. We will find out when our next chapter about Luis Jiménez, the great Mexican, is published. So stay tuned! |

Thanks guys!
We all know that Luis Jiménez got a slow start to his first World Tour race. He failed in his attempts on attack on both stage 1 and stage 2. We know he came 11th in a small group on stage 1 and on stage 2 he was leading under the “Flamme Rouge”. He had started his sprint too far out though and he only came second behind Luis Leon Sánchez who won for a second time in a row.
On stage three Luis experienced his first big mountain stage in a stage race and although attacking again on the final climb he couldn’t keep up with LLS who seemed to dominate the race with his 3rd straight win.
Mark: “But Mikel, you if any know how he was feeling about that? Not good if I’m right?
Mikel: “You’re right. Let’s recall the interview I had with him after the 3rd stage.”
Mikel: “Hello Luis, you are second at the moment. How do you feel?”
Luis: “To be fair I don’t think this is good enough. I know I can do much better but Sánchez is just (…) too good.”
Mikel: “So you are not satisfied so far?”
Luis: “Not really. I want to win but at the moment it looks difficult. I will try my best though!”
Mikel: “Well good luck then!”
But as the legend Luis was about to become he needed to show something. And surely he already knew what he needed to do. Stage 4 of Catalunya was one of the biggest dominations I had seen for a long time. Let’s have a look at what happened.
*
Just before the top of the second last climb of the day Nairo Quintana attacked to get some KoM points. The morning breakaway was still 2 minutes ahead so the peloton was riding a high speed. Luis decided that this was his moment. He took Quinatana’s wheel and followed him over the top.
Quintana stopped right after the top but Luis didn’t. He dived down the descent as a falcon and not long after he reached the breakaway.
He didn’t stay with them long and before the last climb he had already dropped them with about 2 minutes. His efforts now started to really show off. On the top he had almost 3 minutes to the closest rider behind him and almost 4 minutes to the peloton who looked shocked. Now the rain started falling from the grey sky.
It didn’t matter for Luis ‘cause he was about to get one of the most impressing solo wins in a long time. He crossed the finish line with tears in his eyes. Surely he was emotional. The favorite group came in nearly 3 minutes later.
Stage result
1. Luis Jiménez - Caja Rural
2. Luis Leon Sánchez - Rabobank - (+2'44")
3. Fabio Duarte - Colombia - (+2'44") |
