Career
Early life
Born in Birmingham, Martin became British National Junior Road Race Champion in 2004, before deciding to ride for Ireland. He is the son of Neil Martin, former British Olympic cyclist, and Maria Martin (née Roche), also a nephew of 1987 triple crown winner Stephen Roche, and a cousin of fellow professional cyclist Nicolas Roche. His brother Tom rode for the UC Aubenas squad in 2009.
Garmin
Martin turned professional in 2008 with the Garmin-Chipotle-H30 team. He made a quick impact by winning the 2008 Route du Sud stage race and becoming the Irish National Road Race Champion. He reached a UCI World Ranking of 35th (with 137 points) at the end of 2009 season.
In 2010 he won UCI ProTour stage race Tour of Poland. This performance meant he finished 49th in the year end UCI World Rankings with 106 points, which also helped Ireland to 17th place in the nation rankings (254 points).
2011 was his best season to date. He won his first Grand Tour stage during the Vuelta a España (Stage 9) and also became the first Irishman to hold the Vuelta mountains classification lead (he wore the KoM jersey for Stages 10 & 11). He also won a stage in the Tour of Poland but narrowly missed out on defending the general classification. A fine second place in the season-ending Giro di Lombardia lifted Dan to a career high of 9th place in the UCI World Tour rankings with 286 points, helping Ireland to 13th place in the nation rankings (319 points).

64 in TT is good but 76 in hill is underrated.He need at least 78.Dan is one of the best hill rider in the world.In Fleche Wallone he had an impressive performance.At the start of Huy he was in 50th position and finished in 7th. |
