Omega Pharma - Quickstep | In Argentina
Ian Butler
Van Den Broeck for Lotto, strange Pfft
Ciolek has a good chance here, although it's too bad that Cavendish is present...
Good luck, I think Vandewalle could surprise everyone in Australia! The best of luck!

PCM rulezz
@ Ian Butler: Yeah its very strange, I found out that also Wiggins is on the start list. I just played the first stage and maybe it isn't that bad that Cav is present Wink I hope also that Vandewalle could surprise.

The report of the first stage (and the result of the australian NC's) will be up tomorrow after work.

Winners never quit, quitters never win.

It's difficult not to be happy when you're surrounded by Belgians. - Mark Cavendish

Can't wait!
Based on your comment I guess... You used his wheel to win? we'll see tomorrow Pfft

FreitasPCM
Wiggins so early in the season? Shock Must be up to something. Pfft

PCM rulezz
@ Ian Butler: you come close but it's not correct Pfft
@ FreitasPCM: Yeah TdU must be a new race to prepare for the Tour if VDB and Wiggins are present Pfft

No I'm leaving for work, see you later today

Can't wait for the race report, until tonight!

Better late than never, here is my first report ever. Any criticism will be appreciated.

Santos Tour down Under

Stage 1: Prospect – Clare (149.1 km)
Profile
i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/1profile.jpg
This is the first stage of the STDU. With 2 intermediate sprints and a mountain sprint it’s actually a very typical stage for this race. Nobody expects that a break would win so a bunch sprint is almost inevitable. We aim to have a rider in the break so we can take some points on the road.

The race
i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/11.jpg
It’s time to start the season and the riders are ready. The big boss is out of the car and is ready to start the race.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/12.jpg
And when the flag was down the first break of the season tried to get away. You can see Vanmarcke, Mondory, Roberts and the 2 sprinters Van Hummel and Hondo who don’t trust their sprint obviously. We also put a men in this break, the young Italian M. Trentin. But this break never get away. So a new break of 18 men tried to get away.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/13.jpg
No one of OPQS was present so we decide to chase with J. Vermote. We got help from Katusha, Sky, FDJ and Argos – Shimano.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/14.jpg
When the peloton caught the 18 men break M. Brammeier, our Irish champion, tried to get away and he succeeds to get away.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/15.jpg
While Brammeier is “enjoying” the beautiful landscape of Australia, Vigano is pursuing the Irish champion.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/16.jpg
But at the first intermediate sprint the gap is still big enough to great the fans without any concerns about the points. Cavendish won the sprint for the 3rd place and took one bonification second.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/17.jpg
Still the same situation at the mountain sprint on Tarlee Road. So our goal for this stage is achieved and Brammeier will were the Skoda KOM jersey in the next stage.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/18.jpg
In the peloton, Radioshack and Movistar has started the pursuit while Riblon took the points for 3rd place.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/19.jpg
With 60 to go Vigano reached Brammeier. The gap is 3’40” too the peloton. At the second intermediate sprint Brammeier comes easily around Vigano and wins the sprint. J. Vermote surprised the sprinters with an attack and takes the last boni second.
But the peloton was already really close.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/110.jpg
At the moment that the break was caught, we started with our train. Vermote, Trentin, Fenn and Ciolek are in the wheel of J. Hunt who was doing a very hard pace. Behind our back was the train for Cavendish on the rails, Sutton and Thomas (strange order) are leading out Cav. It’s a bit strange the Swift and Hagen are not part of the train.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/111.jpg
But they don’t need them to do a terrific job. Sutton past everybody and brings Thomas in the best position. Our young train was a bit surprised by the move of Team Sky and we are a little back. But Trentin was enormous strong and brings Fenn to the same height as Cav.
Another funny sight was to see Renshaw in the wheel of Cav, it’s the world upside down.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/112.jpg
But when the sprint started their was nothing to do against Cav. His acceleration was enormous. But the sprint of Ciolek was also brilliant. When he came out of Fenn’s wheel he overtook a lot of the other sprinters and was closing in on Cav quick.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/113.jpg
But it was too late, Cav was out of our reach and wins this race easily. Ciolek is a brilliant 2nd, Renshaw is 3rd.

Conclusion
This is a great way to start the season. We have 3 jerseys: the sprint jersey, the KOM jersey (both for Brammeier and the young rider jersey for Vermote. But the best point of the day was our sprint train. With 3 very young riders (Vermote, Trentin and Fenn) we almost beat Cavendish. Maybe if we weren’t surprised by the move of Sutton we could had won this. But we aren’t complaining with this result.

Top 10

Good report, only thing I'd say about it, more as a warning that as a criticisicm, Is that it's very long considering the stage, and you're much more likely to get bored if you write a huge report about every stage, better I find to do short reports on smaller stages, and save the big ones for key stages/classics etc

That way it'll probably be fun for a lot longer, but you may find you like writing longer ones, everyone has there own style Smile

baseballlover312
I agree. I may be a hypocrit as I write huge ones for my story (Let it be said that mine is a single race story) but it could be a couple of pics smaller. Smile

Very nice, agree with the previous comments, but I enjoyed reading it anyway Wink
Keep it up, Can't wait to see you beating Cavendish in the next stage Grin

Great starts from Ciolek and Fenn, good sign for the rest of the race Wink

@ baggieboys32 and baseballlover312: Thanks for the tip, I will make the reports a bit shorter.
@ Ian Butler and sutty68: I was really satisfied with the result and I have a feeling that we can beat Cav. Fenn and Ciolek are a brilliant duo.

I forgot one thing:
Austialian NC's

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Australischekampioenshappen.jpg
It’s a great start for Orica – GreenEdge. They have the complete podium in the road race and a podium in the TT.

I don't know when I have the time to play the next stage. It's very busy at work. But luckily it's my last week, so from next week, I have plenty of time to make some reports.

Stage 2: Lobethal – Stirling (148.0 km)
Profile and situation before the start

The first of 2 hilly stages. The mission is simple: keep Ciolek in a good GC position.

The race
i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/21.jpg
Brammeier with Tosatto and de Kort are the 3 first attackers of the day

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/22.jpg
They reached the first intermediate sprint. Brammeier was sitting in the wheel of Tosatto and come out of that wheel at the right moment to win this race.
Tosatto got a puncture a few meter after the race.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/23.jpg
K. Reus, L. Paolini, J. Hunt, M. Fischer, G. Bole, K. Boeckmans and S. Santambrogio escaped from the peloton and reached the front group 6km before the mountain sprint.
On the top of the hill, Brammeier had no energy left to take some points. de Kort was the strongest and took the 16 points.
K. Boeckmans felled on the downhill section after the sprint while Viviani tried to reached the BOT and succeed
At the second intermediate sprint, there were no points for Brammeier. Paolini, Bole and Viviani took the points and seconds.

Back in the peloton, Sutton was doing the pace. In the background, you can see Vermote in the Young rider jersey.

And also B. Wiggins himself was doing the pace.
There were some attacks in the last 30km after the break was caught. Voigt and Riblon were the first two who tried their luck. Our Vandewalle and Pauwels also tried to get away but nobody was able to break due to Team Sky. Wiggins, Hunt, Sutton and Hagen did in very hard pace. At the foot of the last climb there was an attack from Horner and our Trentin. But they never get more then 10sec.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/26.jpg
With 3km to go, L. Y. Bak, R. Costa, N. Haas and M. Trentin tried a last time to break. Fenn was keeping Ciolek at the front. R. Costa had something left in the tank and was able to stay away. Ciolek won the sprint for second before .... Wiggins 21” after Costa crossed the finish line.
(I forgot to take a picture at the finish, sorry Frown)

Conclusion
Not a bad result if you asked me. Too bad that Costa stayed away but Ciolek has showed some great form. Let’s hope we can win on Willunga Hill. We hold the KOM and sprint jersey but lost the young riders jersey to Viviani. But the most important thing is that Ciolek is still in 2nd place in GC.

Ian Butler
In our language it's the way you write the way you pronounce Wiggins, so it's a mistake I've also made with Wiggins. Wink
