The Paris - Tours classic is one of the biggest one-day races in France. Every year the riders travel from the outskirts of Paris to the Avenue du Grammont in the cathedral city of Tours. Today's sprint finishes in the town of Tours, where Rabobank's Erik Dekker won last October. Today though, one of the race's fast men was sure to be victorious.

[img-r]https://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/th_lance.jpg[/img-r] With their man Lance Armstrong in the race-lead, Team Discovery Channel have been given the role as controllers of the peloton, and they decide who joins the day's break. Today they were a little more lenient, letting a 6-man group free, with the closest in GC being Igor Gonzalez De Galdeano (LIB), at 1'07" behind the maillot jaune. The full group contained, as well as De Galedeano, Bram Tankink, Frédéric Bessy, Unai Etxebarria, Rubens Bertogliati, Nicolas Jalabert and Alessandro Cortinovis. One of the riders here would wear the polka-dot jersey tomorrow, as the first KoM sprints were featured today.

The day's break relaxing early on in the stage.

It turns out that today, despite a KoM jersey on offer, the riders in the break weren't interested. The riders must be thinking ahead because there was no contest for the sprints. Bram Tankink was the lucky rider who relayed ahead the most and will wear the jersey tomorrow. Maybe the rain (again) has discouraged the riders?

Quickstep's Bram Tankink, an awful climber by his own admssion, will wear the Polka Dots tomorrow.

As the break's lead began to drop, the sprinters teams began to ready themselves. Although Hushovd and McEwen looked menacing up front, it seemed that the most organised team of the day was FDJ. A monster 4-man lead out was being built for their sprinter Baden Cooke, led by Bradley McGee. He was pushing the pace and into the final kilometre, Cooke, the 2003 Green Jersey winner, was in a perfect position near the favourites.

The FDJ train in full effect on the right.

The final sprint started with Bernard Eisel surging ahead of the rest, with Cooke on his wheel. The best placed sprinter there was Robert Forster (GER), who forced himself behind Cooke, and kicked before the Australian. McEwen, Hushovd and O'Grady were just behind, but the two horse race was soon over as Cooke took his first tour win since '03.

Baden Cooke had a perfect lead-out today..

The team time-trial is here, and boy is it a tough one. 67kms of rolling hills on a hot, French summer day. A day for Discovery to show off their team strength. or maybe a surprising winner and a new maillot jaune? We'll have to wait until tomorrow!

Starting Tuesday afternoon in the center of Tours, today's TTT heads due east along the Loire River to finish in Blois, with a tailwind that should increase as the afternoon continues. The Discovery Channel team will certainly be looking to show their power here, as will Gerolseteiner, CSC, T-Mobile and Phonak.

An atypical route, as 67kms of rolling hills will create large gaps, and it's been precited pre-race, that either Floyd Landis (Phonak) or Jens Voigt (CSC), or maybe even guys like Alexandre Vinokourov (T-Mobile) or Levi Leipheimer (Gerolesteiner), could perhaps slip into yellow before dark this evening with a good ride. Landis is the closest to Armstrong, only 10 seconds off. Voigt is at 22 seconds, while Vino and Levi are 29 and 59 seconds behind respectively.

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/stage4-1.jpg

The first three starters out of the gates were Lampre, Euskatel and Liberty Seguros. While the course was a treat for the viewers, with beautfiful landscape and crowded roads, the riders were having nothing of it.

[IMG-r]https://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/contador.jpg[/IMG-r] "It's a very hard team time-trial. 67kms is the longest I've ever ridden, especially with those hills near the end, but you know, it's the Tour! You have to put up with it!" said Seguros' young climber Alberto Contador, currently sitting in 48th position in the GC. The Spaniard is a possible future Tour winner, and is a name to look out for in the white jersey competition.

For a change today the sun was shining, and the first team to put up a strong time on this beautiful French summer's day was the T-Mobile team. They had the strongest ride by 17" over the next-best Liberty squad. It wasn't a time that would challenge the bigger guns though by the looks of it, although Ullrich and his henchmen shouldn't be too dissapointed.

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/telekomTTT.jpg

A good ride, but it seems Ullrich will lose more time...

The final five teams out of the starting blocks were, in order of team classifcation, Gerolsteiner, Crédit Agricole, Phonak, Discovery and CSC. Gerolsteiner set off at 3:25 PM on this Tuesday afternoon, with Levi Leipheimer leading them out. Although they were one of the day's favourites, a crash from Beat Zberg near the line cost them dearly. One team that did perform though was Phonak. Third last out of the gate after a dissapointing Agricole ride, they sped to the line in 1 hour and 36 minutes, led by Sergio Botero. A time to be reckoned with..

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/phonakTTT.jpg

With Landis, Pereiro and Botero, Phonak were mightily strong...

Now the big two. Discovery, with Lance Legend in bright yellow, were the hot favourites. The crowds swelled as they hit the course, and they weren't dissapointed. Armstrong, Hincapie, Popovych and Salvodelli all destroyed hte course, and a new best time was up on the board, 31" ahead of Phonak. Hopes of yellow for Voigt were fading fast. A monumental effort was needed.

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/discoveryTTT.jpg

Lance powering the squad to a strong time.

And it was delivered. Dave Zabriskie made up for his disappointing prologue by riding at the front for a seriously long haul of the 67kms, lunging leader Basso over the line ahead of Armstrong, and throwing veteran Jens Voigt into his first ever yellow jersey. This will be remembered.

Can't express my thanks to the guys like sutty, jseadog, fernando97 and baseballlover who are following. I'm really surprised by the lack of comments though. And I won't lie, it isn't helping my motivation. Maybe just a comment or two about the reports? Pfft I'm doing this for me, but I also want people to enjoy it and follow to..

Today is one of the last day's where a sprint is all but guaranteed, with stages 6 and 7 perfect for breakaway protagonists. There are plenty of points on offer for the sprinters, and it could be Stuart O'Grady's last day in green if Baden Cooke (FDJ) or Thor Hushovd (Credit Agricole) can fire. Last year, Thomas Voeckler spent 10 days in yellow after earning the jersey at a similar point of the race to our current leader, Jens Voigt (CSC). Today's flat, fast racing will be a great chance to show off the maillot jaune, but with an average speed of 40-45kms/h expected, it may all be a blur. Last year Stuart O'Grady won here on a wet road, but if the road is dry as expected than we can expect to see Hushovd, Cooke, Forster and McEwen battling it out again.

Another day for the sprinters, as the peloton continues east from Chambord to Montargis. The green-jersey battle is heating up and it seems the battle is down to four: Baden Cooke (FDJ), Stuart O'Grady (COF), Thor Hushovd (C.A) and Robbie McEwen (DAV). A new leader is possible after today.
i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/stage4-2.jpg

[IMG-r]https://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/voigtyellow.jpg[/IMG-r] Some beautiful French sun was out today to treat the riders, and Jens Voigt (CSC) loved showing off his jersey to the adoring crowd. "To be in yellow, it's such an honour obviously, but it's more of a big ad for the sponsors you know? I love wearing it though, it means no more work for me at the front!" Jens joked before the stage. "I do think i can hold on for a while (in the maillot jaune). The 8th stage it will be hard to keep up with the leaders, but if I can get in a break on one of the next days, who knows!"

With Voigt and his CSC team safely monitoring the front of the peloton, no riders were up the road before the first sprint point, so the fast-men would go for it. It was a free sprint, and Robbie McEwen had the best speed, beating O'Grady, Forster and Hushovd easily.

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/mcewensprint.jpg

McEwen was the fastest in the intermediate. Would he win in Montargis though?

A rather slow pace was set after the first sprint as a 9-man group headed up the road. The strongest riders in the group were Phillipe Gilbert (FDJ) and Kurt-Asle Arvesen, (CSC), who would obviously sit up for Voigt if their lead grew. No mountains points today, so the break was a chance for TV time only.

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/cscbreak.jpg

Arvesen, Gilbert and Luis Leon Sanchez at the back of the day's break.

Australia's Robbie McEwen was yet to feature in the sprints, with a 6th and a 4th to his name as of yet. His lead-out has faltered slightly, but today they seemed encouraged to chase down the break and put their man in contention.

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/vansummerenchase.jpg

Johan Vansummeren was plowing along the countryside and reducing the lead quickly.

As the finish approached and the break caught, FDJ was once again the only team with a train in the field. McGee led out Cooke very well again, and the Aussie was the first to kick his sprint for the line. McEwen, Hushovd and Galvez were all on the right wheel going into the final moments.

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/foursprint.jpg

The four horse race, led by Baden Cooke.

McEwen seemed in a perfect spot to take his first win, but as he tried his move he just couldn't pass Cooke! An Aussie 1-2, but McEwen and Hushovd once again fall short. With this win, and O'Grady nowhere near, Cooke takes over the green jersey.

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/cookewin-2.jpg

Two successive wins for Baden Cooke, and a new points jersey contender is upon us!

Another win from Baden Cooke! Two in a row now, and he may be firming as the favourite for Green! Many betters picked either McEwen today, or a suprise winner, but FDJ's Aussie did well..

btw. that was my case with all of my other stories.

+1
Comments are rarely forth coming in stories these days
This is, of course, except when Sutty is around Pfft

I like the story a lot. Keep it up.
You will get more comments in the mountains

Thanks mate he he

That is right! I think I really only got a lot of comments when I set up the story, but the support seems to fall with every stage... And in your case it probably has something to do with pcm10 as well. PCM10 projects simply just dont get a lot of attention anymore... Its a shame tbh...

Uhhh I just saw this story please don't stop writing it!!! Smile
I love to see stories about historic tours - yours seems especially great with the betting, also your reports are very entertaining.

Can't wait til the mountains start Wink Go Ullrich and T-MobileSmile And I always liked Jacksche a lot before he was busted - so I hope he can do well Smile too bad they lost quite a lot of time already in the GCSad

PS: Is it still possible to get my TDF$50.00, so I can at least bet on the stages???FrownCool

edit: wow quite a few smilies even for meGrin

Teddy The Creator
Thanks everyone for the comments, and johannes of course you can!

I lost a little motivation after some unrealistic stages and lack of followers but I think ill continue this until the next DB is out, and maybe longer. Expect bets maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow..

baseballlover312
Take your time, I know how you feel... wait how do I know how you feel???

Crap! I just realized I still have a story! That's definetly an awkward moment. Embarassed
