Don't underestimate the power of the Missile.

Sylvain Chavanel will back me up on this.

Sean Kelly was also full of praise for Nick during the live Eurosport broadcast:

"In my book, Nick Nuyens has proven himself as perhaps the turd best sprinter in the peleton here in Adelaide. For sure, your Basso's and Leipheimer's are big names too but Nick is definitely in my top tree any day of the week."

Face it, the Missile is here to stay whether you like it or not.

Report
We have great news to report from Qatar!

After we came a respectable 3rd on the Team Time Trial in Stage 1, Matthew Hayman was part of a late two-man move on stage 3 which saw him taking the stage victory and the leader's jersey!

For the next stages our boys worked hard to protect this jersey and although Rojas gained many bonus seconds on us in the sprint finishes, we held it all the way.

A great first victory of the season for Matthew and the team!

Basso and Leipheimer? Is this actually another neutural story? Wink I really don't understand. :Frown

Nick "The Missile" Nuyens

Another strong set of riders continuing to prepare for the April classics went out to Andalucia and we are happy to report back some refreshed legs and a couple of nice results.

In the prologue, Stef Clement only lost 4 seconds to the winner (L.L. Sanchez) and Lars Boom was right behind him in 3rd. Nuyens and Niermann managed a 10-11 placing.

The hilly terrain of stage 4 wasn't so favourable to our classicists though as Flecha was our highest man in 20th place.

In the final mountainious stage, Flecha put out a great showing this time, managing 8th place on a far more demanding stage than he would suit.

He came in with Stef Clement and Manuel Garate who ended up protecting solid 10th and 11th respectively in the GC. Indeed Flecha ended up right behind them in 12th place overall - the lot of them were around 6'30 down on the surprise race winner, Gerhard Trampusch!

As you can see from our line-up, we are sending out the full cobbled team to Gent-Lokeren, the first cobbled race of the season. Boom act as joint leader with Flecha and with such a strong team we will be looking to challange the likes of Cancellara and Boonen for the win. If things go pear-shaped though, we can for sure count on The Missile to step in and take charge.

lh4.googleusercontent.com/-JlULpc9uvfI/T_c1WLX4nzI/AAAAAAAAA6Y/DQq_-3792Jo/s400/chavanel.jpg
Sylvain Chavanel made a very early attack at 100km still to ride and was joined by compatriot Matthieu Ladagnous. Surely they couldn't hold it all the way?

lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ziCLIpJJpPc/T_c1WAqLX8I/AAAAAAAAA6c/lRvDQRSX30w/s400/30km.jpg
Indeed with 30km to ride, Johann Vansummeren had made his way up the road to the duo. Meanwhile Lars Boom was following the wheel of Fabian Cancellara about 50 secs behind the leaders.

lh3.googleusercontent.com/-kzigit1wdIo/T_c1WszFOSI/AAAAAAAAA6g/-HPD9SLlZbI/s800/finish.jpg
Cancellara proved too powerful and rode away on the flat from Boom and made his way up to Vansummeren within the final kilometre... But Vansummeren (just!) held on for the win...

lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ibO0EL6sDUM/T_c1WEbIj5I/AAAAAAAAA6U/epnxsqLMtWY/s400/boom.jpg
Boom rode a conservative plan after being dropped by Cancellara and crossed the line 2 minutes down in 3rd.

lh6.googleusercontent.com/-UiJ4qdNHqPo/T_S74DiZPQI/AAAAAAAAA2E/9dLzC2c789E/s20/audio-input-microphone-4.png Comment
A very commendable result for Lars here - he really stood no chance against the power of Spartacus and he put out a great performance to hold onto 3rd Smile Meanwhile Nuyens somehow lost out on a sprint(?!) for 7th whilst Flecha did well to take 12th place after a puncture.

I think there is a mis-understanding here.

Nuyen's not only has pace but indeed also a rocket sprint finish in his legs (no matter what PCM's stats might suggest) - the 5th place on the final stage of the TDU surely confirms this fact and is what has brought about the revelation about "The Flemish Missile" Cool

baseballlover312
Okay. there is a misunderstanding. I'm not trying to sound rude but you can't win on the Champs with a 63 sprint. It can't happen unless he's in a break. Cav, Boonen, Hushovd, and the others of 2009 are 20 points higher than him. Sorry. He had two good stages, where not all the favorites werethere and weren't on form. Not saying he's bad, he is a great rider. But he's not a sprinter all of a sudden. You can still call him the "Flemish Missile", but he's not gonna beatguys in the Tour de France's points, he'll beat them in Roubaix.

In PCM, PCM stats suggest everything. its PCM. It's programmed to work on stats. And those suggest he is a cobbles puncher.

Basso and Leipheimer can't sprint either. I can't explain it any further and for the sake of the story I will shut up now.

So 5th in Adelaide wasn't enough..?

I think the current problem with Nick is that the supposed "Future Great" sprinter that was supposed to be challanging Nick's status as the team's top sprinter turned out to have 50 Flat and 59 Sprint. So Nick took his foot off the gas a little, as shown by Ladagnous outsprinting him in Gent-Lokeren.

I will pass on your constructive criticisms to Nick and, make no doubt, The Flemish Missile will prove these newfound cycnacists wrong over the coming months.

And don't worry - Nick ponders every little one of these criticisms at night-time and he assures me that each one motivates him that little bit more to prove the critics wrong and achieve his ultimate ambition...

In real life? Yes. But this is PCM were talking about. Therefore everything is by stats, and 10 riders on Rabo have a better sprint stat than Nuyens.

We sent out the same strong team to Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, with the exception of Jos Van Emden replacing Rick Flens. The main aim stayed the same - warm up our classicists legs and try to get some more nice results to build upon.

..Or not.

Anyway about half way through the race, our boys managed to split the pack with Cancellara and Ballan. Ballan was soon dropped leaving Boom and Cancellara out in front.

However, once again the Swiss proved too strong on the flat for Boom and powered away to the finish line to take the win.

Forgot to take a picture but Boom held on for an excellent 2nd place, and Flecha can be pleased with his 6th place. Nuyens punctured at the worst possible moment and ended up finishing way down in 37th.

Lars Boom getting some great results of late Wink

pcm2009fan
Yep well with such a great team (probably the strongest cobbled team in the peleton) behind him we would be expecting results from him here.

These races were also shorter in length than P-R & co. which suits Boom's lower STA stat. Flecha will certainly be joint-leader in Paris-Roubaix because of this.

As you can see we don't have a terribly strong team here and will be focusing the efforts at Tirreno-Adriatico instead. Nonetheless, the team comprises of strong riders looking to test their legs against the strongest.

Peter Stetina and Koos Moerenhout are probably the best of the lot and they will act as co-leaders from the start. In reality though no-one has the likely spark to produce some big results for us so a top 10 is our only realistic goal.

www.dublinhotels.co.uk/wp-content/themes/custom-hotel/images/star.png Favourites
The main contedner for the overall is certainly Alberto Contador. The likes of Jurgen Van den Broeck and Alejandro Valverde will be looking to challenge, but early season form makes the favourites hard to predict here.

Goss, Farrar, Cavendish and Boasson Hagen are the likely names to watch out for in the sprints - I wonder whether Jimmy Casper might look to take a stage on home turf?

Catch-Up

Here is a quick round-up of Rabobank performances elsewhere during March so far:

There was little to report from the GP de Almeira, but Bram Tankink managed a respectable 13th placing at the hilly Trofeo di Lugano race in Suisse.

At the Vuelta a Murcia, Stef Clement won the 16km time-trial on Stage 3 whilst Rick Flens and Joost Posthuma also took top 10 placings on this stage. Koos Moerenhout was our best GC performer in 10th place.

At the Ronde van-west Vlaanderen, Laurens Ten Dam and Paul Martens took 13th and 14th place respectively.

These results have left us lying in a reasonable 8th place in the CQRankings and we remain 5th in the UCI Rankings after the TDU.
