18th January 2011 - Tour de San Luis Stage 2
Course Overview
Stage two will treat the peloton to a 157km road race that starts in San Luis and travels to the summer vacation town of La Florida before returning to a small finishing ascent on the Mirador del Potrero.
Race Report
Another hot and sunny start in Argentina ahead of stage 2.
After a quiet and controlled stage, it was 6 riders that attacked at the 33km mark. Chris Barton (BMC), Roy Curvers (Skil - Shimano), Olaf Kerkhof (Team Type 1), Sergey Firsanov (Itera - Katusha), Luca Mazzanti (Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli) and Arnoud Van Groen (Veranda's Willems - Accent) were the riders involved in the attack.
The peleton rode at a very relaxed pace for the first half of the stage, and did not seem to bothered with the 6 man break. The 6 men opened up a gap of 2'33" before 4 more riders attacked out of the pack to try and bridge the gap.
The 4 men were Amaël Moinard (BMC), Olivier Bonnaire (FDJ), Rafal Majka (SaxoBank - Sungard) and Tomasz Nose (Adria Mobil) who attacked and they bridged the gap very easily, forming a group of 10. Together, they built a gap of 7'56", before the peleton turned up the gap on the second half of the stage.
It was at the base of the climb to the finish when the action began. Olivier Bonnaire attacked from the group of 10, and only Kerkhof could stay with him to begin with. But as the main peleton hit the climb, only Bonnaire was left dangling off the front.
With 3km to go, the main men showed their hands. Peter Sagan (Liquigas - Cannondale) made the first move, and it took the other a while to react. Next to go was Italian Champion Giovanni Visconti (Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli) and Rigoberto Urán (Sky ProCycling), with Jack Bauer (Endura Racing) trying to stick with them.
But Sagan was too strong for them all, taking the stage win in style and taking over the Leader's Jersey in the process.

19th January 2011 - Tour de San Luis Stage 3
Course Overview
Stage three offers the peloton a predominantly false flat uphill 164km road race that has traditionally ended in a field sprint in the small town of Villa Mercedes.
Race Report
It was another hot and sunny start for the peleton on stage 3.
After a number of failed attacks, it was a group of 5 riders that managed to break the elastic and get a gap on those behind. Adam Hansen (OmegaPharma - Lotto) and Chris Barton (BMC) were to guys who went first, and were joined by Arnold Jeanneson (FDJ), Laszló Bodrogi (Team Type 1) and Matteo Tossato (SaxoBank - Sungard).
4 more riders joined the escape group, and the peleton led by Liquigas - Cannondale were happy to let them have some time. They gained a gap of 8'26", and worked well as a group over the course of the stage
With just 22km to go, the break was all but caught, and the last ditch attempts to stay away began. It came from 5 riders, with Hansen and Bodrogi putting in the most effort, and Albert Timmer (Skil - Shimano), Adrian Honkisz (CCC Polsat Polkowice) and Pavel Gorenc (Adril Mobil) all trying to stick on their wheels.
But it was to no avail, as they were caught with 12km to go and the lead-out trains began to form for the Mass Sprint finish.
Skil - Shimano, Endura Racing and CCC Polsat Polkowice all looked to set up their Star Sprinters, but Liquigas and Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli were up at the front making sure that their leaders would not encounter any problems.
The sprint opened up and yet again Skil - Shimano's dominance just tittered away. Marcel Sieberg (OmegaPharma - Lotto) looked the strongest, and it was Stage 1 winner Ian Wilkinson (Endura Racing) and Steven Caethoven (Veranda's Willems - Accent) who fought for his wheel.
And it was Caethoven who won the battle in the sprint. The Belgian rider expertly took the victory ahead of Points Leader Wilkinson and Bartlomiej Matysiak (CCC Polsat Polkowice).

20th January 2011 - Tour de San Luis Stage 4
Course Overview
Stage four's flat out-and-back 18.5km time trial will no doubt shake up the overall rankings before the race heads into the mountains.
Race Report
Sandy Cesar (FDJ) set the early pace on Stage 4 with a time of 26'53". After his crash on Stage 1, he has been very quiet in the peleton.
Alex Dowsett (Sky ProCycling) set the next best time, coming over the line 10 seconds quicker than Cesar, but his time would not stand for long.
Teammate Christian Knees performed superbly on the course today. Not only did he catch his minute man, but he beat the time of Dowsett by 15".
But he did not stay at the top for long. Marcel Sieberg (OmegaPharma - Lotto) hit the course hard, and came over the line 1 second quicker than Knees.
One man who was expected to sign was Taylor Phinney (BMC). The US TT Champion just was not feeling it in the legs today and he was very disappointing on a course that looked made for him.
But one man who was showing some good early season fitness was Gustov Erik Larsson (SaxoBank - Sungard). The Swedish TT Champion powered around the course, posting a time of 26'07", and it looked like the winning time.
After Larsson posted such an unbeatable time, the focus went back to the General Classment. Jérôme Coppel (Saur - Sojasun) started the day in 5th place overall, 2'00" down on leader Peter Sagan (Liquigas - Cannondale), but only 15" down on 3rd placed Rigoberto Urán (Sky ProCycling). With a podium place on offer, Coppel really went all out. He came across the line 7" slower than Larsson and waited eagerly for his rivals to come over the line.
The next man on the road was Jack Bauer (Endura Racing). The Kiwi was in the same situation as Coppel, being 2 minutes down on Sagan and 15 seconds off 3rd placed Urán. But this was not o be his day. He came over the first checkpoint 47 seconds down on Larsson's time, and crossed the finish line 53" off the pace in 40th place, losing out to Coppel in the meantime. It will be in the mountains where Bauer will have to make the time up.
And as for Urán, he did not fair much better. The Colombian rider finished 31 seconds down on Coppel, losing his podium place at the same time. Like Bauer, he will need to put time into Coppel and the others in the Mountains.
The final battle on the road is the fight for the General Classment. Giovanni Visconti (Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli) rode well and looked to limit his loses on the course. He finished the course in a time of 26'47", and would ahve to wait for the time of Sagan.
Sagan just had the task of not doing anything to put his lead into jeopardy. He finished the course in a time of 26'29", extending his lead at the top by 18". With 3 stages left in the Tour of San Luis, he still has some work to do to keep the jersey, but he took one step closer to the victory overall today.

21st January 2011 - Tour de San Luis Stage 5
Course Overview
Stage five's 161km road race will begin in La Toma and will present the climbers with the first true mountaintop finish on Mirador del Sol in Merlo.
Race Report
It was an overcast start for Stage 5. Forecast did say that it will heat up as the day goes on.
The day's break formed after a number of failed attacks. Chris Barton (BMC) and Matteo Tossato (SaxoBank - Sungard) were yet again in the break, and they were joined by Chris Froome (Sky ProCycling), Martin Reimer (Skil - Shimano), Blaz Jarc (Adria Mobil), Tomasz Smolen (CCC Polsat Polkowice) and Thomas Degand (Veranda's Willems - Accent).
The peleton was yet again led by Liquigas - Cannondale, and they controlled the gap between main pack and the escapees very well.
As the stage went on, 3 more riders attacked out of the peleton, trying to bridge across to the break. Michael Freiberg (Fly V Australia), Martin Hebik (PSK Whirlpool - Author) and Gianni Meersman (FDJ) were the riders, and they did a fine job getting across to the other 7 men.
The 10 riders worked well together, gaining a gap of 5'46" before Liquigas decided to turn up the pace. At the base of the final climb, 3 riders tried to go for glory, but it did not last long.
At the Mountain Sprint Point, the 10 riders were back as one group, but the peleton were just behind them. In fact, they were caught just 1.5km later, and it was set for a battle of the GC men.
Rigoberto Urán was the man who made the first move, and surprisingly no other riders went with him. Behind, the other GC men were looking at each other, leaving Urán to pace away from them all.
With victory in sight, Urán had plenty of time to zip up his jersey and take the plaudits from the fans at the finish.

21st January 2011 - News Update
WorldTour News - Results
André Greipel got his first victory of 2011 with a sprint victory in Australia. He came in front ahead of Allan Davies (Pro Team Astana) and Daniele Bennati (Leopard - Trek).
Greipel also takes over the lead in the General Classment, with Mark Renshaw second and Allan Davies now third.
The day's main talking point was the withdrawl of Mark Cavendish from the Santos Tour down Under. The Manx Sprinter suffered a bad crash on the finishing circuit in Stirling, but the full extent of his injuries are yet to be revealed by his team, HTC - Highroad, but there are rumours that he is out til the end of February.

22nd January 2011 - Tour de San Luis Stage 6
Course Overview
The climbing only gets tougher with stage six's 194km road race from Estancia Grande up a lengthy ascent to La Carolina that typically sews up the overall classification.
Race Report
It was an overcast but bright start for Stage 6 of the Tour de San Luis
After a quiet start to the stage, it was Ivan Santaromita (BMC) that made the first move, attacking on the first climb of the day
Surprisingly it was Jérôme Coppel (Saur - Sojasun) and Jack Bauer (Endura Racing who attacked after Santaromita on the climb, both looking for the KOM points at the summit.
Liquigas and Sky ProCycling controlled the peleton in the early parts of the stage, keeping the gap on the descent on the first climb at 56".
But the peleton did not expect the 3 riders in the break to press on. Working well together, they opened up a gap of 2'45, as the stage flattened out. At one point, Coppel moved into the Provisional Leaders Jersey, but Liquigas had everything under perfect control behind.
The break lasted until the foot of the final climb up to the finish, and it was on that climb where the big names showed their hands. The peleton soon split into several groups, spread out from the top of the climb to the bottom.
A group of the 8 riders containing all the main GC men, made it to the top first and once they hit the summit of the climb, the finish line was in sight in the distance.
Rigoberto Urán (Sky ProCycling) lead the group into a final kilometre, before putting in one last kick for the line.
And it proved the winning move, as Urán takes his second stage win of the Tour de San Luis in as many days!

23rd January 2011 - Tour de San Luis Stage 7
Course Overview
The Tour de San Luis will conclude at the stage seven's 167km circuit race. The finale offers a chance for the overall race leader to tuck himself safely inside the peloton led by sprinters barreling to the finish line in a high-speed and downhill bunch sprint.
Race Report
It was a sunny start for the final stage of the Tour de San Luis.
The day's break formed after 17km of the stage as the peleton climbed towards the one and only Mountain Sprint point of Stage 7. Tanel Kangert (ProTeam Astana) was the man who attacked first, taking the points at the sprint.
He was joined by 5 other riders as the course entered the second circuit. Julien Simon (Saur - SojaSun), Sandy Casar (FDJ), Chris Barton (BMC), Francis De Greef (OmegaPharma - Lotto) and Dmytro Grabovskyy (ISD - Lampre Continental) were the 5 riders who jumped out of the main group to join Kangert, and together they built up a lead of 8'52".
But the peleton always had them under control. Liquigas and CCC Polsat Polkowice controlled the pace early on, but the workrate was soon shared between Liquigas, Sky ProCycling and Endura Racing.
The break was eventually caught at the 6km mark, and it was all set for a fast downhill Bunch Sprint finish. The lead-out trains quickly formed, with Endura Racing and Team Type 1 looked the most organised, whilst Liquigas and Europcar tried to split the peleton but heading to the other side of the road.
As the sprint started, Skil - Shimano surged to the front, and it looked like it would be a tight finish to the Tour de San Luis.
And it proved to be! Jure Kocjan (Team Type 1) takes a great win, ahead of Sébastien Turgot (Team Europcar) and Ian Wilkinson (Endura Racing).
