Angola's economy has undergone a period of transformation in recent years, moving from the disarray caused by a quarter century of civil war to being the fastest growing economy in Africa and one of the fastest in the world. In 2004, China's Eximbank approved a $2 billion line of credit to Angola. The loan is being used to rebuild Angola's infrastructure, and has also limited the influence of the International Monetary Fund in the country.
kind of makes your comparison useless when one of the countries has loaned the other 2 billion dollars to rebuild its economy. |

it was because a country isn't necessarily 3rd world because of an economic situation. it's about how most of the country live.

didn't one of the teams get shot? yeah, great event.
you can't call what has happened in India minor. it a mojor cock up from the building of the stadiums, to the provision of accomodation to the selling of tickets.
they can't even keep the athletes fit and healthy. they're all dropping like flies with delhi belly.
this isn't a dig at India as a country. it's a dig at the organisers who gave the games to a country without the infrastructure to cope with it. |

don't know. why does that matter?
anyone got another one that says different?
people say you can't trust wikipedia bur 99.9% of the time the info is correct. why would someone put up a fake world map? and why wouldn't it have been corrected if it was wrong? |

It's just the Us/communist/other map
which is apparently how 1st/2nd/3rd world is decided
The problem is, most countries pull out all the stops for international tournaments, but when they get minor ones they care less, India has spent a fair bit on the crickt WC for next year and couldn't be bothered to develop for the commonwealth games.

here's the same map on a more reputable site
https://www.nation...ntries.htm
your right, it does look like a communist/capitalist map. but i think that is just coincidence.

The term 'Third World' arose during the Cold War to define countries that remained non-aligned or not moving at all with either capitalism and NATO (which along with its allies represented the First World) or communism and the Soviet Union (which along with its allies represented the Second World). This definition provided a way of broadly categorizing the nations of the Earth into three groups based on social, political, and economic divisions.
The intro to the wiki article, I read it after you put the map up, I had never realised that before

interesting fact. i never knew that either.
but i'm guessing that it only started out that way. it is now used as a way of grouping the economic strength of the countries.
there were many african countries who were communist during the height of communist power. they are now considered third world.
anyway, back to the actual games
Australia v England FIGHT!!!!
anyone see the 100m controversy? |

Just to point out: first/second/third world is no longer used as a method of classification of countries, because it is now redundant.

As crommy said, 1st/2nd/3rd world is no longer used... and has been replaced twice to my knowledge since it was used.
Back on topic to the commies.

So, to quote the commentators about 10km into the pan flat 170kmmens road race:
The Australians need to pull back this break it's got a minute now and flat courses play into the hands of a breakaway.

can't really see past cav for this race if it ends in a sprint.
i guess the Aussies will be trying to break it up a bit. |

Yeah though it seems like the New Zealanders have been doing a similar thing.
I'm surprised Hunter missed the break, he probably would have got a medal, particularly given the pretty paltry level of competition. |
