21-01-2009: Tour de San Luis
Stage 3:
San Luis ITT: (19.8km)
The 9th rider to start was already one of the big favorites. It was no surprise Zirbel (BPC) sets the best time when he crosses the finish line.
Just after Zirbel it's Vandborg who sets the 2nd time so far, losing only 14 seconds to the American.
Zirbel and Vanborg were placed 1st and 2nd for almost the entire TT. It's 16th placed overall Visconti from ISD who beats Vanborg's time with 3 seconds.
Then we have to wait for Nibali in the white U25 leaders jersey. He sets the 7th time with only 5 riders left. That's more then enough to keep him in the top 10 overall, but is it enough for a top 10 place today?
5th placed Dimitri Champion (BSC) comes close to Zirbel's time, but comes 6 seconds short.
4th placed Barbosa (PRT) comes even closer, but also can't beat the American's time. He is only 5 seconds slower then Zirbel.
It's very unlikely that Ángel Vicioso makes up 1 minute and 10 seconds on Ivan Basso in this TT, but can he make the gap smaller today? He sets the 5th time 13 seconds behind Zirbel.
The only rider left that can ruin Zirbel's party is Basso. Can he win two stages in a row? With Basso setting the 7th intermediate time that is not very likely. When he comes over the finish line he has even lost one place and comes in 8th, 16 seconds slower then Zirbel and only 3 seconds slower then Vicioso.

You might be wondering what happened to me trying to post 2 races a day, well Friday evening my computer crashed. I'm pretty bummed about it, because (besides that I keep having troubles with my new computer and that it's going to cost me money to get it fixed) I was enjoying the story and was looking forward to playing some stages this weekend.
Hopefully my PC will be fixed next week and then I can continue the story, at least if my hard disk isn't damaged. |

Well, my PC is fixed and everything seems to be working fine again. That means I'll be able to continue with the story.
My PC crashed while I was taking screenshots during the replay of the 3th stage of the Tour Down Under. Therefore I don't have all screenshot I wanted, so I'll have to work with what I've got.
I'll be posting the report of the 3th stage in few hours. |

22-01-2009: Tour Down Under
Stage 3:
Unley - Victor Harbor: (136.0km)
The first serious break of the day contained Noè, Greg Van Avermaet (SIL) and Michael Schär (AST). Noè took full points on the first climb. Because he also picked up points in yesterdays stage he was the virtual leader in the KOM classification. However Noè will not wear the KOM jersey tomorrow, because later on Cancellara picked up full points on the last climb.
Noè's group didn't get more then a minutes lead. A break with Niki Terpstra (MRM), Staf Scheirlinckx (SIL), Bram De Groot (RAB) and Rubens Bertogliati (SDA) was more successful and was allowed to build up a lead of over 3 minutes.
The peleton kept the break under control and accelerated in time. It was turning in a relative uneventful stage, but then a few accidents happened. First it was Fuji - Servetto's leader, Fredrik Kessiakoff, who fell off his bike.
Not much later a big crash followed. More then 20 riders hit the ground, amongst them a few riders that were high placed in the GC; Nick Nuyens (RAB) (6th), Mikhail Ignatiev (KAT) (11th), Björn Leukemans (VAC) (12th) and Yury Trofimov (BBO) (17th). All of them lost more then 3 minutes.
After a 2nd and a 5th place, it was Matti Breschel (SAX) who was the fastest today. He beat Lorenzetto (LAM) and Arashiro (BBO). Breschel also takes over the overall lead from Flecha. Chicci was again not able to take part in the mass sprint, however Kuschynski surprised with a 9th place.

22-01-2009: Tour de San Luis
Stage 4:
San Luis - La Carolina: (155.4km)
After the first intermediate sprint a breakaway group of four riders was formed; Gaël Malacarne (BSC), Morten Høberg (CPI), Björn Glasner (TRS) and Yuri Metlushenko (AMO). These four build up a lead of more then 7 minutes.
With Basso in the leaders jersey Liquigas did their job and kept the break under control. Vandborg and Carlström lead the peleton over the first three hills.
It was mostly the responsibility of an excellent Carlström that after the penultimate hill the peleton only contained 29 riders anymore. Besides Basso and Nibali all the other GC riders were present.
The breakaway's lead was less then 3 minutes with still more then 30km to go, so Nibali took over for a moment to give Carlström a breather.
4 km to the top of the final climb, the break was already caught and the front group only contained 14 riders anymore. Basso felt he was the strongest and although their were still more then 20km to go he accelerated and left the rest behind.
At the top Basso had build up a lead of 40 seconds. In the descent the chase group didn't work together very well and Basso's lead grew to almost a minute. Ángel Vicioso (ACA), 2nd overall, felt he had to force something and attacked. Cândido Barbosa (PRT), Manuel Vázquez (MCO), Dimitri Champion (BSC) and Nibali countered.
Vicioso had overestimated himself and couldn't follow when Barbosa put in an attack. With 3km to go Vicioso and Champion fell behind, while Barbosa, Vázquez and Nibali caught up with Basso.
With the flag of the last km in sight it was Vázquez with a surprise attack.
Nibali countered, but couldn't get on Vázquez's wheel. The Spaniard won the stage, while Nibali had to settle for second, just in front of Barbosa. Basso managed to keep Barbosa's wheel and came in 4th in the same time as Nibali and 26 second in front of Vicioso.
Although Liquigas missed out on the stage win it was a good day for them. Basso's lead is now 1 minute and 33 seconds on Vicioso and Nibali wins 1 place and is now 4th overall.

Stage 4:
Burnside Village - Angaston: (143.0km)
A lot of riders wanted to get in the break. Kuschynski tried his luck, but was joined by 19 other riders. The peleton didn't gave them any room.
A break with Noè, Staf Scheirlinckx (SIL), Björn Leukemans (VAC), Roger Hammond (CTT), Niki Terpstra (MRM) and Fredrik Kessiakoff (FUJ) looked to be more succesfull.
However Leukemans felt it wasn't going fast enough for him, took off and left the others behind. He was having a strong day and build up a maximum lead of more then 3 minutes on his own.
Nonetheless Leukemans didn't have any chance against a peleton at full speed. With a few km to go Grégory Rast (AST) tried to surprise the sprinters, but never got a real gap. Matteo Tosatto (QST) was pulling the train for Tom Boonen, who had the other main favorites, Rojas (GCE), Breschel (SAX) and Arashiro (BBT), sitting on his wheel.
Because of his current form and a slightly uphill finish, Breschel won his second stage in row. Nick Nuyens (RAB) was a surprising second, beating Rojas and Boonen in the sprint.
Willems was again the strongest Liquigas rider and kept his place inside the top 10 of the GC.

23-01-2009: Tour de San Luis
Stage 4:
San Francisco Del Mote De Oro - Merlo: (179.0km)
With 2 big mountains on the program Liquigas didn't want to chase a large breakaway. They got their way because it was Andris Buividas from the Atlas - Romer's Hausbäckerei team, who started an impressive solo escape. At the foot of the first mountain, the Alto de Cantana, he had build up a lead of 8 minutes and he did the 15,2km long climb all by himself.
It was Fisher who did most of the work today, but he was helped out by riders from Andalucía, for Ángel Vicioso, and Palmeiras, for Cândido Barbosa. With 35km to go and with a gap of 4 and half minute to Buividas, it was surprisingly Dimitri Champion (BSC), placed 5th overall, who attacked. He would never get more then a minutes lead.
With 15km to go it was Vicioso who opened the attacks. From the top 10 of the overall rankings only 3th placed Barbosa and yesterdays winner, Manuel Vázquez (MCO), hesitated to counter. Champion was soon caught and also Buividas was within reach.
Like yesterday it was again a very strong Carlström, who set the pace up the final climb. Only Scott Zwizanski (KBS), Víctor Hugo Peña (RRC), Nibali and Basso could follow his pace. Although the rest of the favorites were not far behind.
With less then 5 km to go it was Barbosa, who accelerated passed the 2nd group in an attempt to catch up with Basso's group.
He succeeded and brought a couple of the other favorites with him, but it was Basso who had still something left and attacked. With less then 2 km to go he looked on his way to victory.
It's Basso's second stage win of the race and with only two flat stage to go and a lead of more then 2 minutes the overall victory looks secured.
Nibali comes in 3th behind Barbosa, who takes over 2nd place overall from Vicioso. Carlström concludes another strong day by crossing the finish line in 8th place.

Well, I guessing his form is relatively high for the month January and his daily form must also have been high . It also wasn't a hard stage, because the pace wasn't very high and it exploded only in the last 5 km.
I don't know Teya's mountain stats and I can't look them up at the moment, but Carlström's mountain stats are 69 and he finished in 8th place after pulling Basso and Nibali up the mountain and don't forget I'm playing on extreme. His form is however one of the highest of my team. |

I know he is a big talent. I looked it up and for his 20 years of age he already has impressive stats.

24-01-2009: Tour Down Under
Expectations:
It hasn’t been a successful race so far for Liquigas. Chicci has disappointed and doesn’t seem ready jet for the ProTour level. Liquigas’ only hope for ProTour points is Willems, who is still in the race for a top 10 spot in the GC. However today it is time for the only hilly stage of the race and it will not be easy for Willems to keep his place inside the top 10.
Stage 5:
Snapper Point - Willunga: (148.0km)
The break of the day consists out of 11 riders. Rui Costa (GCE), Frédéric Guesdon (FDJ), Laszló Bodrogi (KAT), Jeremy Hunt (CTT), Yury Trofimov (BBT) and six other riders build up a lead of 6 minutes.
Quick•Step and Saxo Bank control the break and with 25km to go the lead is down to 1 and half minute. At the foot of the last climb it’s Rein Taaramäe (COF) who opens the attacks.
A lot of attacks follow. At the top of the climb the break is caught and its Björn Leukemans (VAC) who is the first to reach to top with a stretched out peleton behind him.
On the flat section that follows the attacks keep on coming. When the riders reach the downhill section a group of 12 riders have a gap of half a minute. The group contains race leader Breschel (SAX), 3th overall Flecha (RAB), 4th overall Arashiro (BBT), 7th overall Cancellara (SAX) and 9th overall Fredrik Willems. A good chance for Willems too even improve his overall ranking.
Willems has no luck, because with 5km to go the break is caught and its Nuyens (RAB), who puts in a new attack.
9 riders counter Nuyens and with 1 km to go it’s clear they are not going to be caught.
Cancellara wins the sprint of the front group and also takes over the leaders jersey from his teammate Breschel. It’s Saxo Bank's 3 victory in a row.
Willems was unfortunate that the break he was in was caught. He loses 5 places and is now 14th overall. With only a flat stage left a top 10 place looks out of reach.

Stage 6:
Potrero De Los Funes: (144.6km)
A large break of 16 riders got away, but with Stanislav Kozúbek (PSK) as
the best placed rider in the break, almost 12 minutes behind Basso, Liquigas had no intention of bringing back the break.
However the breakaway riders didn't work well together and were never able to build up a significant lead. 25km before the finish line the bunch was back together. This might be a change for Fisher to deliver Liquigas an other stage win here in Argentina. With 3 km to go he had placed himself right behind 3th placed overall Ángel Vicioso (ACA) and looked to be in a great position.
Fisher was feeling the efforts of the past week and instead of closing in on Vicioso other riders were closing in on him.
Fisher crosses the line in 6th place, while it's Vicioso who takes the stage win. With the bonification seconds he is now only 3 seconds away from taking over 2nd place from Cândido Barbosa (PRT).

Stage 6 (last stage):
Adelaide City Council Circuit: (90.0km)
Although a group of 12 riders got a lead of 4 minute, this stage had mass sprint written all over it. The breakaway never had a real chance and they were caught 20km before the finish.
We've had a lot of crashes during this race and also in this stage a couple of riders hit the pavement. Amongst them were sprinter Baden Cooke (VAC) and Pierrick Fédrigo (BBT).
This flat stage is a good opportunity for Chicci to finally join in the sprint and finish in side the top 10. With 1 km to go Chicci is in 6th place right behind Gert Steegmans (QST).
The stage win goes for the 3th time this race to Breschel (SAX). He beats Boonen (QST) and Rojas (GCE).
This race was a big success for Saxo bank; Breschel has won 3 stages, the points and the young riders classification, while Cancellara has won 1 stage, the overall classification and will be UCI ProTour leader until at least Paris - Nice.
Chicci concludes his week in style and finishes just outside the top 10 in 12th place. A disappointing performance by him. Willems finishes 13th overall, which is a good result for him. With a bit more luck had could have delivered Liquigas some ProTour points.

25-01-2009: Tour de San Luis
Stage 7 (last stage):
San Luis: (161.0km)
The break of the day contained 6 riders with as best placed rider Jakub Danacík (PSK). He was placed 36th, 15 minutes and 17 seconds behind Basso.
Vanotti and Vandborg controlled the pace of the peleton. They didn't let the the gap with the break get bigger then 6 minutes.
Unlike Liquigas a few other teams were interested in bringing back the break. Andalucía for Vicioso, PSK Whirlpool for Hondo and Capinordic combined forces and took over from Liquigas.
With 10 km to go the break was with in reach. However Peter Kusztor (ARH) didn't feel like giving up. He still had something left in the tank, so he attacked and left his breakaway companions behind.
His brave attempt almost got rewarded, but under the bow for the last km the peleton stormed past him.
After two 2nd place, one 3th and one 5th place. Barbosa finally got a stage win. The strong Portuguese kept Vermeltfoort (RCT) and Vicioso behind him. With his win he also secured his 2nd place overall.
Fisher finished just as yesterday inside the top ten and Basso crossed the finish line in 13th place, making his overall victory official.
Liquigas was the only ProTour team in the race and brought a strong team, but nonetheless road an excellent race. A strong Basso took 2 stages and the overall victory, while Nibali finished 4th overall and won the youth classification. The other 4 riders worked hard to protect Basso and the leaders jersey. Especially Carlström was important and did a lot of the dirty work. This was a great start of the season for Liquigas.
