I've been busy at work ever since I got back to my hometown on vacation so I haven't gotten around to using my bike. Now that I am trying to avoid shin splints due to running I thought, hey, why not get the ole' bike out.
I had to leave in a hurry last year so I didn't get a chance to put it away for the winter, but my family said they would do it for me.
Did a quick check and the status is:
- Front brakes worn out and locked
- Front brake cable is rusty
- Rear brake cable is rusty
- Rear brake doesn't respond
- Chain is covered in 2 inches of old oil
- The chain is two gears "off" from what it's supposed to be.
- The chain falls off every time I pedal
- The rear gearing doesn't respond.
But hey, the frame is clean!

I just bought my first bike:
Time to train!
Do you guys have any tips on maintenance of my bike and or training methods (like avg speed, distance, food, etc.)?

Well, average speed doesn't really matter, nor distance. It's more a matter of time and the kind of efforts you put in.
About food, normally if you ride 2 hours max, you don't need it. You need to drink though.
Totally unrelated, but as some might have noticed, I've been mapping my rides with strava. Around here I keep getting second or third on various segments. There are some KOM I could get (that'd be ironic, climbing has always been my weakpoint), but some seem unreachable.
Around my parents' place it's totally unreachable. On a ~20 minutes ascent, ranked as a cat. 3 mountain - I had a strong headwind all along, but still - I lost like 5 or 6 minutes on Bescond (pro at Cofidis). Without any wind, maybe I'd have done 2 or 2:30 minutes less. Not 6. Can't even conceive that. Makes one humble, especially as I have no clue about the fact he really tried to set a time there. |

Three and a half minutes off a pro is pretty good though
Meanwhile, my plan to ride some of the climbs of next years first two Tour stages has hit a hitch with another injury. In five summers of serious cycling, five injuries. Damaged knee, Achilles Tendinitis, 2x ligament damage to my feet and now ankle ligament damage. At least its not broken as first feared, but it still hurts a fair bit. Maybe next year will be a lucky one.

Not to sound disrespectful but trying to beat a professional cyclist's score is not very smart Well, actually, trying to beat anyone's score is not what you should be doing. (not pointed at you, I mean "you" in general )
I really like Strava because you get notes on personal times, though, and that makes it interesting. But I couldn't be bothered to try and get the KoM on the Berendries, which is absolutely impossible anyway |

I like Strava for that fact as well. but I also like to compare myself to other people. sadly most of the segments are in cities roads where you shouldn't go 40 km/h
edit: wow I really don't make sense

I didn't exactly try to beat a professional, I thought I'd set a time there for now and see what it looks like, and it's not looking so good compared to a pro.
I'll probably improve it next month, when I have more time and less wind.
I must admit I've checked where segments (KOM) are located next to my place(s) and tend to accelerate when I know I'm recording a time. Can't help it. |

I recently became a modern man when I bought my first ever smartphone.
Strava is fun.

Suggest googling basic maintenance but depending on your experience rule number 1 for me is to regularly check the chain and keep it in good nick. Clean it every few weeks (lots of methods watch vids to get one you like; wetter = more often, dryer = less often) and then lubricate with a decent chain lubricant like Finish Line or some such not something general purpose like WD40, that will quickly lose its effectiveness.
Most expensive lesson for me was taking some bad advice using a poor general purpose "lubricant" and not regularly cleaning and relubing the chain. Quickly wears the chain and the cassette and results in an expensive cassette + chain replacement.
Other than that I personally loved the difference fitting some puncture resistant tyres made for me - went from a change every other week to not having a single puncture about a year down the line after fitting some Specialized Armadillo All Condition tyres. Not the most efficient tyres I know but I'm only interested in the convenience of one size fits all year and no inner tubes changes.
With regard to food and drink obviously always stay hydrated by carrying a bottle but I tend to find I need to pack some food for anything over 2 hours (bananas and some type of cereal bar being my favourites).

Thought you guys might get a kick out of this. Did Pike's Peak today, not sure if you all have heard of it, but its a pretty popular mountain here in the States. Comparable to Mount Evans, but steeper and a few miles shorter. Takes roughly the same amount of time to climb, maybe a little longer.

https://app.strava.com/activities/6616...s/66167885 Ah Pikes Peak. Sebastian Loeb went up there quite alot quicker than you did only last week. Probably wishing you had his weapon of choice. https://www.youtub...CFcssVNaVg |

No wonder Loeb broke the world record when they have put tarmac on whole climb recently, before when there was a gravel road, it was a better race.
Another interesting video is when Loeb as preperation climbeb Mont Ventoux: https://www.youtub...7Dv3lqxH6I |

Have lately been on a "training camp" at the cottage before the autumn season, where I have a goal of doing better than in the spring. Not great roads everywhere, but still a lot of mountains!
https://app.strava...s/65383263 OK amount of elevation!
The last week I have been over 100 kilometres on 6 rides, hope it will help me on the longer races in the end of the season, as well as stage races. Will upload these soon. |
