Peter offered stage win for Bodnar, but Froome sprint spoiled that oportunity

This is one reason I'll never be able to respect Froome as a 'true' champion.

Sagan and Froome both have a stage win this tour and Sagan was willing to let his teammate who doesn't get to win often a shot at glory, while Froome decided that he would try to outsprint both him and Sagan, even after all the effort Bodnar contributed to him making time and how much more it would mean to him to take a win.

Most riders would be willing to accept they are in yellow and have a stage win and be content with the time gain in the greater battle, as many champions have done in the past.

I know it's not in the rules, but this seems like proper etiquite.

Well he gained as much time from bonus seconds as he gained from breaking away. If there were no bonus seconds he would have not sprinted, but in circumstances, it was necessary.

Sagan would've won regardless, trust me. NO REASON to gift that stage. Sagan isn't a GC-contender.

Do you respect Merckx as a true champion?

Merckx never wanted to let someone else win. His idea was: the people want to see the strongest rider win. It's disrespecftul not to ride 100% for the victory.
I kinda agree. Of course it'd have been very nice for Bodnar and a nice show from Sagan and Froome, but I don't blame Froome for wanting to win and taking as many boni seconds as he can. It's not his fault Bodnar doesn't win often and it's not up to him to give Bodnar that "gift". Smile

It wouldn't of been a shock to see him gift it to Bodnar if he actually a chance to do it, Sagan seems like he has alot of respect for his teammates

Close to disastrous. Really well designed stage turns to absolute shit now, could at least have tried to made it longer/harder.

Do they have incompetent ones too? Or are they just reminding us that they are in fact competent. Pfft

Lets not forget Sagan has 20 something 2nd places and had won one stage in 2013 prior to 2016. Everybody wanted Sagan to win, he wanted to win, the Green Jersey is officially over, he missed it yesterday. I can't see why you would gift a stage like that to Bodnar, I would understand if Sagan had been Contador and they simply were racing for seconds.

Thats my take, at least. And I have absolutely no problem with what Froome did, he is a true racer, wanting to grab the stage.

You have a point there..leader type rider never gives anything free. Froome is one of them.
And real aces will hurt even harder ..when rival suffers ..or having technical as much we don't like these days.

Froome has ALWAYS been an aggressive bike rider, it has been the consensus for long that he and Sky are boring. Sky are, to some extent, but Froome has always been putting huge attacks in. This time around tho, they have been unexpected.

Quintana, meanwhile, has become more conservative and calculated, but also extremely cold blooded. So he is definitely the more boring rider of the two and the most boring of the 'big 4'. But if he wins, I doubt he will care. Not that he does at this point anyways.

I think once he wins a Tour that might change a bit, he's carrying alot of pressure into the Tour over the last 2 years with all the hype that has followed him around so he is trying to play it safe and not take any risks that could cost him the chance to win the race. Once he wins one I think it will free him up more to take a few more risks.

But what if he loses again by being so conservative?

I kinda knew that opinion would be disagreed with:

@Alak: It was 2 seconds though, not sure that's necessary, but I can understand that.

@Riis: and both Sagan and Bodnar worked very hard to keep Froome away, when it's obvious Sagan would beat him, isn't it fair in that case that Froome keeps up the I get time - you get a stage situation?

@Ian: And that's the one thing I don't respect of Merckx, but even if. Merckx's case, he had the stage in his pocket already, to Froome, it didn't matter if Sagan or Bodnar took the win, given he wouldn't.

I guess this is a more personal thing I can't respect Froome for, even if it's justifiable.

Sagan needs points (kind of Pfft) and Froome needs bonus seconds so the only scenario where it could've happened would be if Sagan accepted third and Froome got the same bonus seconds finishing second behind Bodnar. More importantly they would have to have been able to communicate that in the space of 30 seconds while riding hell for leather at 70kph, evading the bunch in a stage finish of the TdF - easier said than done.

I know you digital natives grew up on the internet but seriously guys, don't be insulted by something someone you don't even know personally writes on the internert.

Froome...what was he thinking though trying to outsprint Sagan?!?
Prolly the wind blew bit to much trough his head.

There's a difference between someone who won everything and is considered a great athlet and a great man.

Merckx was a great athlet, his canibal trait showed he's not a great man.
That and some outbursts in the press...but anyhow, Sagan's a great sport.

12 or 6 bonus seconds? What's this? Some 4-day pan flat stage race?!

When you're so focused on checking ManGame that you forget there's an actual stage on...
No, seriously, glad that Froome finally showed us his inner Vino- Sagan almost stuffed it up as gloriously as his Liquigas team did on that Vuelta stage, but showed us that he was human and had feelings, and that he's really turned out nice.
Still don't like time bonuses, though.

MARSUPILAMI
It was looking like a pretty interesting stage until the front group stopped, Pinot and co. chased it and they did nothing for kilometres.

i have to admit that I wasn't hoping any gaps after that stop, but surprises happen (second day in a row) and we have been able to, once again, admire an absolute beast who is Peter Sagan.

Once again he broke the group and kept relaying as if he didn't care about the stage win (I mean, the companions might have outsprinted him in case he had paced too much, but fortunately, that didn't happen). He got some more gap (as if the existent gap before the stage wasn't enough) for the Green Jersey and he should have it secured by now (I say should because falls happen, but I am seeing into the future that in following breakaways, we will see P. Sagan in our TVs/PCs/wherever you watch TdF).

After saying how much I like(d) Sagan (today), I have to say I am starting to love Froome as well. He is showing us that he is strategically perfect, he is clever, has an amazing race view and as if the previous stuff wasn't enough, he has a beast team. Today it was Thomas, but it could have been Stannard, Rowe or Kiryienka who could have accompanied him in the mini-group with Sagan and Bodnar.

I feel very confident Froome has this Tour in the bag, he has also showed he is getting time in the fields where we didn't think he'd get anything which are flat and downhill... Wait for some more time gap from him tomorrow!
