The stageresult here was OK. Ricco really should be able to stay with Sella on a stage like this, but losing 43 seconds is OK. Also losing the same to Alarcon is fine. Pluchkin, Madrazo and Cunego are clearly in another league, and Ricco keep getting seconds on Nibali is priceless. To gain something similar to 3 minutes on Trofimov will be very very difficult, more than that, is almost impossible.
I still hope that 5th place in the GC could be achieved here with Alarcon only 40 seconds ahead and Sella still 2 minutes down.
A load of decent guys went out of the race today, meaning only 146 riders left. That could be decisive when going for attacks, and having lost Keukeleire I can only hope that Furdi, Boily or Pichon can now get into some attacks, preferably already on the next stage, but more importantly on stage 19.
Stage 17 is Riccos chance to secure enough time on Alarcon, to survive the mountains, while stage 18 and 20 could be the stages where Ricco took 3-4 minutes on Trofimov... Dreaming of a 4th place, fearing 6th or 7th.

Worst GT points scoring performances are:
Wikipedia | 27 | Giro 2010 | Wikipedia | 102 | Giro 2011 | Carmeuse Cyclisme | 116 | Giro 2011 | Warner Brothers | 120 | Giro 2011 | Festina - Conec | 125 | Giro 2012 | Wikipedia | 149 | Vuelta 2012 | Carmeuse - Bouygues Telecom | 151 | Giro 2012 | Wikipedia | 172 | Vuelta 2011 | Team B&O | 174 | Vuelta 2010 | Warner Brothers | 179 | Vuelta 2010 | Team B&O | 185 | Giro 2012 | Pro Team Venchi - Sugoi | 189 | Giro 2013 | Auber 93 - Look | 191 | Giro 2011 | Warner Brothers | 202 | Giro 2012 | Pokerstars.com | 203 | Tour 2013 |
Looking at the 2010 Giro, there were only 91 finishers in total. Wikipedia picked a weak 7 man team, and only Pavarin finished the race - he must have picked up some pts in a breakaway along the way.
Yeah, that was a horrible, horrible race! I remember all too well. Having a clear podium contender, and former TdF winner, Markus Fothen and a decent TTT team around him, also including a very strong hilly rider:
Markus Fothen
Diego Ulissi
Steve Morabito
Mathieu Bernaudeau
Ramunas Navardauskas
Kristof Goddaert
Olivier Kaisen
Daan Rijntjes
Jonas Ljungblad
The race started out perfect, with getting 3rd in the TTT, leaving Fothen perfectly, as the best of the GC favorites, 7 seconds ahead of Ricco, 15 ahead of Schleck and almost a minute ahead of Devolder. Diego Ulissi was there for stagehunting, as the race was bumpy.
Then Fothen got caught behind a crash on stage 3, losing a minute on most of his rivals, before crashing twice ending up with disbanding the race. Ulissi also crashed, and was injured, thus not able to score any points. My best rider ended up being Steve Morabito in 42nd place, an injured Ulissi somewhere around 100th and all of my TTers abandoning, leaving the team with three riders in total.

My only goal is to be the worst ever team in PT and seems it might be possible this season.

You're going to have to beat me first
Happy to see Fothen continuing his consistency, even though I don't recall a single attack from him. I won't complain at the if he manages that top10. Despite not granting that many points it would be good for morale.
Thanks for the list SN. It's funny how you got to that from a rhetorical question. Your archives' info is always interesting.

I agree. It would be fairly interesting to find the highest amount of points scored aswell...
I would believe it was La Gazzetta dello Sport, who tore the Giro apart one season having Damiano Cunego winning the race by a mile or more, Danilo Di Luca in 5th place or so, and Daniele Bennati to win the flat stages... If I recall correctly they also had Posthuma and another good TT'er to take even more points along the way.
I can't see if anyone else should have managed to score such a bundle of points in one single race later than that, although the point scales have changed a bit over the years.
Can anyone recall what season it was, the one I'm referring to obviously - And perhaps give a link to where the results might be.

Damn, with four men down, it´s even worse Giro than expected. I´m curious who will be able to build usable train in upcoming stage and if Degenkolb catch someone´s rear wheel.

I found it... Di Luca was only 11th, I see now...
Giro d'Italia 2010 had a pretty incredible La Gazette team. Take a look:
Damiano Cunego (Winner of GC. Winner of stage 10, 16, 17. 3rd on stage 2, 7th on stage 3, 4th on stage 4, 3rd on stage 5, 3rd on stage 6, 8th on stage 9, 3rd on stage 12, 9th on stage 9, 9th on stage 15, 3rd on stage 18, 2nd on stage 19, 7th on stage 20. Maglia Rosa from stage 4 to finish.
Danilo Di Luca (11th GC. 7th on stage 2, 5th on stage 4, 7th on stage 6, 8th on stage 8, 7th on stage 10, 2nd on stage 12, 5th on stage 15, 9th on stage 16, 6th on stage 17)
Michael Rogers (19th GC. Winner of stage 21. 7th on stage 12
David de la Fuente (28th GC)
Alexandre Vinokourov (49th GC
Sylwester Szmyd (54th GC)
Joost Posthuma (58th GC. Maglia Rosa from stage 1 to 2. 9th on stage 12, 5th on stage 21
Sergio Marinangeli (78th GC. 5th on stage 2, 6th on stage 3)
Daniele Bennati (DNF. Winner of stage 1, 2, 9. 7th on stage 14. Maglia Rosa from stage 2 to 4.
The team also won stage 1 - The TTT.
Stagewins: 8
Maglia Rosa win
Points jersey win
Mountains jersey win
The team had Maglia Rosa on EVERY stage.
Danilo Di Luca was 6th after stage 18, and if I recall correctly he was, on paper, probably the 3rd best GT rider in the race, and only the poor PCM AI made him lose contact so early, due to not responding to attacks, while Cunego was ahead.
I really can't remember any team being any more dominant than this. Also, btw. Daniele Bennati would have been top 6 in the points competition, which I believe Di Luca did in fact manage. Bennati abandoned after stage 15.

Interesting stats.
Good thing I'm not in the top of the worst performances, but I didn't excell either.
I think my best performance in a GT was in Vuelta 2011, when Ruben Plaza finished fourth, he and Cornu each got a stage win and the team was first in the teams classification.
Looks like I should work on my GT squad in the future.

What a ride by Pluchkin! Perfect moment to attack!
Thought this race was lost to Cunego, but now I'm feeling rather embarrased by my negativity the other day. Nothing's settled yet though as there are more hilly stages to come. I really hope Pluchkin can do this!
Also first win of the season!

It's getting increasingly irritating to see my team not attacking, when I selected it purely for breakaways. Instead I can just enjoy watching Good Energy moving further and further away from me in the rankings.

I am not really sure how breakaway ai works as to who gets chosen for breaks, feeling quite lucky with recent breakaway guys and them staying away. More unexpected points, though I perhaps greedily hoped I may have snatched a win from one of these cmon good energy share a bit
Clearly this stage was always going to be an issue chasing, though must make some of those sprinters who had battled through the recent mountains question why they bothered.

Kind of expected that it would end in a successful breakaway, but it's definitely annoying when they're only four, as we should've the firepower to chase them down to set up a sprint for Pozzato, Degenkolb, Impey and the other fast men. But what can you do?
Looking forward to see the GC battle continue now! The next stage should be one for Cunego, and he most likely needs to grab time on Pluchkin to win maglia rosa in the end, which should make for great entertainment. |

I almost feel embarrassed, but then again, I won.
Guess putting my strongest team into this race has paid off for me then.
Or my handsome bribery.
On the other hand, I feel it's offset slightly by my awful display in California. Not even fielding a team strong enough to pull back breakaways, much like this stage. Still, it's nice to see my team share the winning out amongst themselves - and to see Malori still struggling over the mountains to claim those finishers points.

Great ride from Rujano! Amazing to see him fighting to get himself right into the top 10. If he can survive the next hilly stage, it could be doable, we will see...
Congrats to Good Energy, their tactics of having a good all-around team are paying off. Chapeau.

With the finish moving closer, we still have the mountain jersey. It would be amazing if we could cling on but we'll have to see since there are still some tough mountain stages to come with Ben Nasser will struggle on.
Good Energy having a great race, 5 stage wins is a great feat and a reward for lots of good attacking riding. Thanks for the reports as well SN. |

How sweet is this?
First stage win this season at all. Then a Giro stage to top it.
From a horrible Giro to a successful one with one stage.
Also only one more spot to the aimed top 20 after gaining on a hilly stage.
Being interested in the KoM might also make him attack in the next stages.
If only I hadn't last minute change the Giro Stage win goal to Vuelta top 10.
Thrilling report towards the end. Thanks SN. |

Yay, happy for Rothaus
Especially on the only stage with huge time loss chances left, and some nice KoM points on top of it.

A pretty anonymous stage from us, I just hope Antón will be allowed by AI to attack for mountain points eventhough he's top 15 overall now.
Big congratulations, roturn! I guess we can forget about that not so nice podium discussed on the previous page now |
