@ baseballlover321: I don't have the full insight from over here in Europe, but from what I've heard I don't have the impression that the US are a truly secular country. Sure, officially maybe, but Christian lobbyists seem to have an aweful lot of influence when it comes to stuff like legalizing homosexual marriages or abortion. Of course that might not be Christian but simply conservative, but, again from what I've heard, many seem to argue with God on that topic.

Right now, of the western world the US are in fact the farthest you can get from secular. Which is odd considering how it was a country founded on freedoms (of religion among others) and with no official religion.

"You guys"? Do I look british?
If I google issoisso British I get 111,000 results. Which is pretty strong evidence, especially as your posts actually come up on the first page.

I don't get a single result that pertains to me on the first page

Italy is more religious, although the politians are more secular probably.
The Vatican City and Isreal would win though, and are both probably part of the Western world.

@issoisso I was talking about Crommy.
@cunego That has nothing to do with speration of church and state. Those are topics of general debate, and do I have an opinion on them? Of course I do.

What surprises me the most regarding the poll is the fact that only one person said "Judaism" whilst 13 have voted for "Other".
I'm no expert in religions, but I can't think of what the other ones might be.
Should have named it 'I'm not taking this serious at all' instead of 'Other', I suppose
I'm bringing up an old post from this thread, just to give you some insights on this matter. I voted 'Other', and I think that the poll options are actually quite limited.
I consider myself what is known as a weak agnostic theist.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnostic...tic_theism
I don't know if there is a god. I'd like to believe so, but I can't prove it. Someone might be able to do so though, maybe someday in the future.
The difference between this and atheism is that atheists claim to know that there is no god.
I do believe in the existence of a god. For me, 'god' is more of a symbol though for what we as humankind can't scientifically prove as fact. The creation of the universe for example I consider a godly act, because we don't know what caused it. The Big Bang Theory is just that - a theory. I do consider evolution as proven though, so I don't think I owe anyone anything for existing.
While I do believe, I do not consider myself religious, because I don't follow one particular religious dogma, and I do not consider myself a member of any church (even though technically I was baptised in the Catholic church).
The fact that each and every religion (both past and current ones) is different suggests that there is no absolute answer to the god question. Religions come and go, some have multiple gods, some have one. If you look in present and historical societies, religion has always served two purposes: to explain the currently unexplainable and unknown, and to provide a set of moral values and rules to society. In that sense, I do believe that religion, by nature, has a good purpose.
The problem with all religions is that it always fails to update its dogma to what has been scientifically discovered (space instead of heaven being a cloud in the sky, evolution instead of intelligent design, the earth being round instead of flat, etc.), and that devout religious people consider their point of view on the world superior to others, even to the point where extremists want to force their opinion on others. Religion, while serving a good purpose by creation, is therefore almost always misused and abused, with the end result being usually far worse (religious wars). This outweighs the naturally good purpose of religion, and therefore I consider the effect of religion on today's world to be negative. |

Incorrect. There's a broad range of definitions for atheism, very few definitions will contain the word know. Most will use the word believe.

Educate yourself between the difference between the word theory and scientific theory: https://en.wikiped...fic_theory
Saying the Big Bang is "just" a theory is grossly incorrect and inaccurate. The Big Bang is a scientific theory. There's a plethora of evidence supporting it.

The word theory in every day context is not the same as scientific theory. It's not a hard concept.

It's still a theory. Not fact. Which can be said for anything in this discussion.

So can you now see why the big bang is not "just" a theory?

There is one. It's called distance.
