@Ian: 4 stages is pretty incredible isnt it!
@Freitas: Yep he's really exceeded expectations in the Giro
@SSJ2: Quick-sim's not usually this kind
@sutty: Great performance from him so far, I'm really pleased. I do find that the Italians tend to dominate the Giro a bit much in PCM, especially Basso

SPECIAL REPORT
GIRO D'ITALIA
STAGE 20 CALDES VAL DI SOLE - PASSO DELLO STELVIO
Well I'm having a great time with an extended holiday out in Switzerland, staying here in this lovely chalet and preparing intensely for the upcoming Tour de Suisse by going out clubbing late at night
Meanwhile, not too far away, in northern Italy, Chris Anker, Roman and the boys will be tackling the legendary Passo dello Stelvio in a horrifically difficult penultimate stage of the Giro. I wish them good luck
First up is the profile - it doesn't look absolutely terrifying at first but when you realise that the two big cat.1 'hills' are the Passo di Tonale and the Passo di Mortirolo - both about the height of Mont Ventoux; it becomes quite scary
We're off! A large breakaway group forms on the slopes of the Passo di Tonale. The riders are: Chiarini, Florencio, Gerdemann, Samoilau, Larsson, Bardet, Devenyns, Pinotti, Pietropolli, Ladagnous, and Failli. Quite a strong breakaway indeed!
Crash! Philippe Gilbert is run over by a car! And trodden on by Robbie McEwen! Disaster for the Belgian! That must've hurt!
Erm... Cyclocross anyone?
On the descent down to the foot of the Cat.2 climb and the gap is already up to 11 minutes to the breakaway despite the best efforts of Basso’s Liquigas squad. Perhaps they will triumph on this hard stage!
As the peloton passes the Intergiro and starts towards the foot of the Passo di Mortirolo, the break's lead is over 13 minutes with just 70kms left - surely they would win? The best placed rider in the GC is Marco Pinotti, who is 54 minutes down on race leader Basso
This looks steep! Glad I'm not riding here
Is that man on the right floating or is he just standing on the road and is like 50m tall?
More steep gradients - it's been above 10% for pretty much the entire climb!
Dries Devenyns tops the Mortirolo first, in keeping with the day's previous events - he has won all the other mountain sprints as well!
As soon as the break reaches the slopes of the Stelvio, Gustav Larsson attacks!
12 minutes later, the ascent begins for the reduced peloton of 75!
Meanwhile, up front, Marco Pinotti has counterattacked Larsson and built up a 30 second gap
15km to go for the ever-thinning pack and the first attacks arrive! Daniel Moreno attacks and you can see Laurens Ten Dam of Rabobank trying to follow him
Giro success story and 'King' of the Mountains Pozzovivo attacks next and builds up a good lead over the pack
The peloton accelerate suddenly to try and catch Pozzovivo, knowing he is high up on the GC and Kreuziger and Sorensen are caught unawares by this and dropped. However they're fighting hard and trying to get back into the lead group.
Meanwhile up the road Pinotti is a minute ahead of the rest of his breakaway companions and looks set to win the stage!
Basso's had enough and sets out in pursuit of Pozzovivo from a group of 12 with Scarponi taking up his wheel
Francesco Faili is the first of the breakaway members to be caught by Pozzovivo and Basso, who's now left Scarponi behind
Marco Pinotti triumphs! He celebrates by pumping his fists and why not, he's just won the queen stage of the Giro at age 36!
Not a great picture here but Basso is the first of the GC contenders across the line along with Chiarini and Gerdemann of the breakaway. He’s just two and a half minutes behind Pinotti, meaning he made up 8 minutes or so on the climb!
The fight for the minor placings and important seconds is still on further down the field. Here Chris Anker is nearing the finish at the front here
Wearily, Sørensen crosses the line just behind the small main group of favourites. Kreuziger is a ways behind but is somehow given the same time, luckily for him!
So here's the stage results - it took over seven hours! What a long time to spend in the saddle!
1 | | Marco Pinotti | BMC Racing Team | 7h16'59 | 2 | | Branislau Samoilau | Movistar Team | + 33 | 3 | | Romain Bardet | Ag2r La Mondiale | + 1'18 | 4 | | Riccardo Chiarini | Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela | + 2'20 | 5 | | Linus Gerdemann | Radioshack - Nissan | s.t. | 6 | | Ivan Basso | Liquigas-Cannondale | s.t. | 7 | | Domenico Pozzovivo | Colnago - CSF Inox | + 3'02 | 8 | | Gustav Larsson | Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team | + 3'41 | 9 | | Xavier Florencio | Katusha Team | + 3'50 | 10 | | Daniele Pietropolli | Lampre-ISD | s.t. | 11 | | Mathieu Ladagnous | FDJ-BigMat | + 4'25 | 12 | | Dries Devenyns | Omega Pharma - Quick Step | + 4'32 | 13 | | Hubert Dupont | Ag2r La Mondiale | s.t. | 14 | | Michele Scarponi | Lampre-ISD | s.t. | 15 | | Chris Froome | Sky Pro Cycling | s.t. | 16 | | Jurgen Van den Broeck | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | 17 | | Damiano Cunego | Lampre-ISD | s.t. | 18 | | Jose Rujano | Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela | s.t. | 19 | | Daniel Moreno | Katusha Team | s.t. | 20 | | Stefano Gurzelli | Anna Savon | s.t. | 21 | | Chris Anker Sørensen | Team Saxo Bank | + 5'43 | ... | 30 | | Roman Kreuziger | Team Saxo Bank | s.t. |
So after a poor showing today has Chris Anker dropped down the GC?
1 | | Ivan Basso | Liquigas-Cannondale | 88h51'50 | 2 | | Domenico Pozzovivo | Colnago - CSF Inox | + 4'31 | 3 | | Stefano Gurzelli | Anna Savon | + 5'20 | 4 | | Damiano Cunego | Lampre-ISD | + 6'59 | 5 | | Michele Scarponi | Lampre-ISD | + 9'18 | 6 | | Chris Anker Sørensen | Team Saxo Bank | + 13'55 | 7 | | Jurgen Van den Broeck | Lotto Belisol | + 14'18 | 8 | | Jose Rijano | Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela | + 15'29 | 9 | | Hubert Dupont | Ag2r La Mondiale | + 18'45 | 10 | | Daniel Moreno | Katusha Team | + 21'06 | 11 | | Roman Kreuziger | Team Saxo Bank | + 21'17 |
No he hasn't - he's hanging on by the slimmest of margins over Jurgen van den Broeck but he will probably lose that time in the time-trial tomorrow. Meanwhile Kreuziger drops down below Moreno into 11th place. After another great stage, Pozzovivo overtakes Garzelli to move into a stratospheric 2nd! Looks like the podium is done and dusted, who would have thought that it would be Pozzovivo and Garzelli up there instead of Scarponi or Froome!?
I'll tell you what happens in Milan tomorrow briefly, and then there will be a bit of a break

I think that he grew tired of living

Argh, Kreuziger lost that place, but I'm sure he'll recover in the streets of Milan. Pinotti rode really well too. |

There's a giant on the loose
Nice race report about that Stelvio
Though there's two times the same screenshot, when Pozzovivo attacks. |

@SSJ2: maybe
@Freitas: He should be able to make up those 11 seconds on Moreno shouldn't he Great ride indeed from Pinotti, that's his second stage victory of the Giro I think
@Ian: Oh so there is thanks for pointing that out has been corrected now

GIRO D'ITALIA FINAL ROUND-UP
Stage 21: Milano - Milano ITT 30kms
So to round off the Giro we have an ITT round the streets of Milan. Chris Anker would be looking to limit his losses to Jurgen van den Broeck, who's not far behind him in the GC; and Roman Kreuziger would definitely be looking to move up a place, being a much stronger TTist than Daniel Moreno who is ahead of him.
Chris Froome puts in a great performance and shows that he has turned up for the Giro after all and wins the stage. Remarkably, it's Marco Pinotti who recovers from his heroic efforts yesterday on the Stelvio to take 2nd place!
1 | | Chris Froome | Sky Pro Cycling | 40'34 | 2 | | Marco Pinotti | BMC Racing Team | + 16 | 3 | | David Zabriskie | Garmin - Barracuda | + 19 | 4 | | Frantisek Rabon | Omega Pharma - Quick Step | + 25 | 5 | | Tomas Vaitkus | Orica-GreenEDGE | + 41 |
Roman finishes 13th, a great showing from him but unfortunately Sørensen can only finish 57th so loses out to Jurgen van den Broeck in the battle for 6th place overall.
Final General Classification
1 | | Ivan Basso | Liquigas-Cannondale | 89h33'12 | 2 | | Domenico Pozzovivo | Colnago - CSF Inox | + 6'28 | 3 | | Stefano Garzelli | Acqua & Sapone | + 6'50 | 4 | | Damiano Cunego | Lampre-ISD | + 9'18 | 5 | | Michele Scarponi | Lampre-ISD | + 10'42 | 6 | | Jurgen Van den Broeck | Lotto Belisol | + 14'46 | 7 | | Chris Anker Sørensen | Team Saxo Bank | + 15'41 | 8 | | Jose Rujano | Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela | + 17'39 | 9 | | Hubert Dupont | Ag2r La Mondiale | + 21'43 | 10 | | Roman Kreuziger | Team Saxo Bank | + 21'46 | 11 | | Daniel Moreno | Katusha Team | + 24'15 | 12 | | Jakob Fuglsang | Radioshack - Nissan | + 28'46 | 13 | | Chris Froome | Sky Pro Cycling | + 33'24 | 14 | | Laurens Ten Dam | Rabobank Cycling Team | + 35'59 | 15 | | Gianluca Brambilla | Colnago - CSF Inox | + 36'57 | 16 | | Emanuele Sella | Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela | + 39'13 | 17 | | Robert Kiserlovski | Astana Pro Team | + 39'36 | 18 | | Thomas Löfkvist | Sky Pro Cycling | + 41'22 | 19 | | Steven Kruijswijk | Rabobank Cycling Team | + 48'28 | 20 | | Wilco Kelderman | Rabobank Cycling Team | + 48'45 |
Well, what can I say about that? Total domination by Basso as he wins by over 6 minutes! Kreuziger just loses out on 9th place by 3 seconds to Dupont! How cruel!
Final Points Classification
1 | | Ivan Basso | Liquigas-Cannondale | | 178 | 2 | | Mark Cavendish | Sky Pro Cycling | | 175 | 3 | | Alessandro Petacchi | Lampre-ISD | | 167 | 4 | | Domenico Pozzovivo | Colnago - CSF Inox | | 151 | 5 | | Stefano Garzelli | Acqua & Sapone | | 130 |
Vital points gained by coming 7th in the time-trial enable Basso just to overtake Cavendish at the top of the points rankings by a very narrow margin!
Final Mountains Classification
1 | | Damiano Cunego | Lampre-ISD | | 52 | 2 | | Eros Capecchi | Liquigas-Cannondale | | 48 | 3 | | Domenico Pozzovivo | Colnago - CSF Inox | | 47 |
Cunego takes the KoM jersey ahead of Capecchi and Pozzovivo in a tight battle
Team classification: Lampre-ISD
Young Rider classification: Gianluca Brambilla
That's it from me, hope you enjoyed my summaries of the Giro, it's always nice to know what's going on isn't it? I'll be taking a break now
Spoiler I bring some news, either good or bad depending on how you look at it. At the moment, I'm having fun doing this story but not quite as much as I have had earlier when I started.
At the moment I'm really motivated for a new story, which you may have seen appear in my signature. I'll be taking an extended break from this story and starting that one now, but this story is NOT dead, merely sleeping It will be back soon, don't worry
Please do have a look at my new story when it's up, it's gonna be great and I'm planning some presentation and interface tweaks that will make it look really nice
Oh and many thanks to all who have followed, it's been great having your support, and special thanks goes to Ian, sutty and Freitas for spamming me with helpful and positive comments after nearly every stage

@Jesleyh: Thanks Glad you're curious, hope you can follow it
@sutty: Don't worry it hasn't stopped altogether - I'll be back with the Tour de Suisse in a few weeks hopefully; it's just I had this idea for the new story and I really want to get started with it
@Freitas: Good to know, thanks
@Ian: Weird, especially Garzelli - no idea how he managed to carve 4 minutes out of an in-form Scarponi
New story will be up tomorrow, don't quite have time to do anything today
